The goal isn’t to live forever, but to create something that will.

Donating to BGHF in the form of a bequest in your Will is one of the greatest acts of generosity that you can make. Every gift has the potential to make a difference, no matter how large or small.

No one knew until her death in 1961 that Mrs. Charlotte Sills had left a share of her estate to QHC Belleville General Hospital. A total of $3 million was eventually received with $2 million designated for, “the construction and maintenance of a convalescent home.”

It took many years to receive all the necessary government approvals, and construction of the new wing didn’t start until March 2007. In that time, the original bequest grew to many times its original value; enough to fund the community share of building costs for the new Charlotte Sills Wing of QHC Belleville.

The Sills Wing houses the regional Behavioural Supports Transition Unit, Physiotherapy Rehab Unit, and The Children’s Treatment Centre. Mental Health Services was relocated to the fifth floor of the Sills wing during the expansion.

How your property will be distributed

Place serious consideration into having a Will written long before the time may come to do so • Should you die without a Will, the law says that you have died ‘Intestate,’ which means that you left no instructions as to how your estate is to be divided and distributed. In these circumstances, the ONTARIO SUCCESSION LAW REFORM ACT governs how your assets are distributed.

• Take control of your finances to ensure that your wishes are met upon your death.

According to the Ontario Succession Law Reform Act, if you die without a Will, your property will be distributed as follows: 1. If you have a spouse, but no children: Your spouse inherits everything. This only applies to legally married spouses. Common-law spouses do not automatically receive anything if you die without a Will.

2. If you have a spouse and children: Your spouse first takes a preferential share up-to $200,000 worth of assets. Anything left over is called the residue. If anything is left over, it is divided between your spouse and your children as follows: If there is only one child, your spouse and child each receive half of the residue of the estate; if there is more than one child, your spouse receives one-third of the residue and the children share the remainder equally.

3. If you have children, but no spouse: The children each inherit an equal portion of your estate.

If any of them have died, that child’s descendants (i.e. the deceased person’s grandchildren) will inherit their share.

4. If you have no spouse and no children: Your parents inherit your entire estate.

5. If you have no spouse, no children, and no parents: Your brothers and sisters (or their children if any brothers and sisters have died) divide your estate.

Wills & Bequests

A legacy gift is a lasting statement of your generosity and care, and an opportunity to leave health care and the world a better place, for generations to come.

These gifts may include:

Bequests made through a Will allow you to make a contribution to the future of Quinte Health Care Belleville General Hospital, often a contribution that you couldn’t make during your lifetime. Whether you are updating your Will or making one for the first time, there are various types of gifts to consider with options that best suit your wishes or circumstances.

Specific Bequest in Your Will You designate the whole residue of your estate to the Belleville General Hospital Foundation.

Residual Bequest You donate a portion of your estate to Belleville General Hospital Foundation, after all of your debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests to family members have been paid. This is typically done by designating a percentage share of your estate to the hospital foundation.

Asset Gift You may wish to bequeath or transfer assets such as mutual funds, stocks, securities, RRSP’s or even personal property such as artwork, etc.

Contingent Gift A gift which only takes effect in the event of the prior death of other named beneficiaries. This would remove the possibility that your estate may go to the province should none of your named beneficiaries survive you.

Should you decide to leave a bequest and join the Dr. Bruce Cronk Society, ask your lawyer about making a codicil (amendment) to your Will, perhaps eliminating the need to re-write the entire document.
