Focus on Mammography Transforming Breast Cancer in Belleville Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in our community and with Ontario lowering the breast screening age to 40, more women than ever are eligible for mammograms.

Our fundraising goal for the 2025 Game On Gala was the purchase of a new 3D Tomosynthesis Mammography System for Belleville General Hospital — an urgent, critical upgrade to equipment that is outdated and end of life. This new system costs $800K and will transform the way breast cancer is

Cheryl's Story: A second chance at the age of 70.

Last year, Cheryl celebrated her 70th birthday with a renewed sense of joy, gratitude, and purpose. But just a few years ago, she wasn’t sure she would reach this milestone at all.

In October of 2017, Cheryl reluctantly went for a routine mammogram. It had been more than ten years since her last screening, and like many women, she remembered the experience as uncomfortable and something she could easily put off. But when she arrived at Belleville General Hospital for the test, that decision changed the course of her life. The very next day, she received a call: her images needed a closer look. Further testing revealed a growth — and on her birthday, Cheryl learned that cancer might be part of her story.

In the weeks that followed, the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Oncology Clinic and BGH’s diagnostic teams became the center of her world. Advanced imaging, surgical care, radiation treatment at KGH, and five and a half years of follow-up support guided her through every step. Because of the skill of her care team — and because the right diagnostic equipment was available here, close to home — Cheryl is here today. She has been officially released from oncology care and is living with a profound sense of a second chance.

Why it Matters Our Direct Mail marketing program is one of the largest programs at the Belleville General Hospital Foundation. One-time and annual giving direct mail appeals give our donors, patients and prospects an opportunity to learn about specific areas and departments within the Quinte Health Belleville General Hospital and the people they help. Donor gifts go directly to our Hospital's highest priority needs whether it's replacing old equipment or purchasing new, state-of-the-art equipment that support the best possible care.

Our 2025 Christmas Angel Campaign featured the story of John Smale, professional commercial interior designer, business owner, artist and content creator from the Quinte region. He had gone under for a routine colonoscopy and when he woke up, he heard the words: “You have cancer.”

That was the start of a year that changed everything for him and his wife Patti. There was surgery and months of chemotherapy. Throughout, John was treated with care and compassion by the professionals at Belleville General Hospital and the Dr. Douglas A. MacIntosh Cancer Clinic.

Donor Stories Kristin’s Camino What began as a deeply personal journey became a powerful act of community generosity.

Inspired by her own cancer journey, Kristin Crowe, along with friends Doug Peterson and Judi Rufo, set out to walk the Camino de Santiago in Spain to raise funds for critical cancer diagnostic equipment at Belleville General Hospital.

Their original goal of $101,000 quickly gained momentum as the community rallied behind them.

By the time Kristin completed the Camino, the campaign had surpassed its goal, raising more than $123,000 in support of a new tissue processor for the regional laboratory at Belleville General Hospital.

This essential equipment helps pathologists prepare and analyze biopsy samples more efficiently and accurately, supporting faster and more reliable answers for patients across our region.

Kristin’s Camino is a powerful example of how one personal journey can inspire collective action and meaningful impact for local healthcare.

Lorne Holditch & Deadnersville The Deadnersville Halloween Haunt began as a heartfelt tribute by Lorne Holditch in memory of his wife, Sheila, and has grown into one of our community’s most meaningful traditions of giving.

What started as a seasonal Halloween display has evolved into a large-scale community event that brings thousands together in support of local healthcare.

2025’s Deadnersville welcomed a record-breaking 23,000+ visitors and raised $25,000 in support of priority medical equipment at Belleville General Hospital.

With this most recent contribution, Lorne’s efforts have now raised more than $106,900 since 2018 in support of local healthcare.

Deadnersville has grown into a community tradition that honours memory and delivers meaningful support for local healthcare year after year.

Dennis and Sheila McCullough When longtime BGHF supporters Dennis and Sheila McCullough of Canadian Tire Belleville, learned about the need for a new 3D mammography system, they took the bold first step of making a $100K gift to support the project.

Dennis commented, “Sheila and I are fortunate to live in a community that looks after one another.

We’re proud to help get this initiative underway and look forward to seeing our community come together to complete it.”

This machine will serve thousands of women every year. Bringing it to life takes many hands. We look forward to completing this project in 2026!

A Legacy That Will Care for Generations When Jean Bannerman created a Nursing Education fund in honour of her mother, Harriet, she wanted to celebrate a woman whose life was dedicated to nursing and caring for others. Years later, Jean and her partner, Murial (Murphy) Colquhoun, ensured that legacy would continue and expand by leaving more than $250,000 to the fund through their estates.

Their remarkable gifts are a powerful example of how Estate gifts to BGHF can be incredibly personal, lasting investments in the future of local healthcare.

Jean and Murphy’s support will ensure ongoing professional development opportunities for Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses who call Quinte Health Belleville General Hospital their home.

Through their generosity, Harriet's passion for nursing lives on.

And now, so too do the legacies of Jean and Murial.
