As I write this, work on the initial phase of renovations to our crystal palace, the Conservatory, is proceeding on schedule, but a date for re-opening is not set. It’s published every two weeks and we promise never to share your email. Sign up at www.bbgardens.org. Fall brings another busy season here at one of Birmingham’s most cherished public open spaces. As the weather cools, we’ll once again welcome thousands of local school children for free science-based Discovery Field Trips. And for the first time, we’ll include middle schools as well, for the inaugural year of “Plants: Inside and Out,” which is geared especially for this age group, and includes both lab and field studies. In early October we’ll be dressed to the nines for Gala in The Gardens, presented once more by Sterne Agee, the opening event of the eighth Antiques at The Gardens. Again, this event, the only one in our area, is proudly presented by IBERIABANK and we’re grateful for their support. New local tastemakers will be featured along with favorite dealers from past shows. Don’t miss noted architect Bobby McAlpine, the featured speaker in this year’s Red Diamond Lecture Series. See page three for more information, but better yet, visit our web site for in-depth portraits and previews. Later in October, the Fall Plant Sale returns to Blount Plaza; see page seven for details. I always enjoy our plant sales, first, because I get to visit a number of nurseries to select plants, and second, I really get energized from meeting all our customers and talking to them about their plants and gardens. Fay has been pivotal in the growth and establishment of the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, serving seven years (1982-1989) on the Master Plan Committee and six years on the Board of Directors (1999-2004). She helped The Gardens grow into a nationally known botanical garden and one of the most visited sites in Alabama. She was also the President of the Birmingham Botanical Society Auxiliary (1983-1985) and founded the Fall Fiesta fundraiser which began in 1993. Her perennial group, which propagates and grows perennial plants for The Gardens, is one of the strongest volunteer forces at The Gardens. It has recently renamed itself in her honor (The F.B.I. Perennial Group). Fay initially imported perennial plant stock from England and is responsible for introducing many varieties of perennial plants to gardeners in the Southeast. In 1994, she was awarded the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year Award. Her recent major gift has funded improvements in the potting shed - the area she describes as “where the greenhouse staff and volunteers do their work.” These gifts include vital equipment such as a forklift, an ice machine, a new garage door and stainless steel soil tables on motorized lifts, as well as improved lighting and ventilation. Through this thoughtful donation, Fay has made The Gardens a safer and much more pleasant place to work and volunteer. Her leadership as a donor, volunteer and plants person has inspired many in the community to follow her example and support The Gardens.

The Future of
Youth Volunteering: Leadership through Service Taylor Steele, Volunteer Coordinator
Continuing education programs are an important component of our youth volunteer program at The Gardens. Academic service learning programs have allowed us to make wonderful community contacts with a variety of schools, service organizations and young individuals that want to learn while they serve. We’re fortunate to have a large number of volunteers who have been committed to The Gardens for over 20 years, but we know that one important piece of our pie is Birmingham’s youth and its volunteers of the future. We recently partnered with Youth Serve of Birmingham (www.youthservebham. org), a youth leadership organization committed to promoting youth volunteerism and leadership, while giving young people the tools to make positive differences in their communities. This summer we hosted their Urban Summer Camp series for three weeks. The goal was to have their young adults provide valuable volunteer assistance to The Gardens while learning about our organizations mission and the role we play in the larger community of Birmingham. For the first two weeks, the Urban Service Camp volunteers worked in The Gardens alongside our regular weekly volunteers. The first week of their service was focused around clearing Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense) in the Kaul Wildflower Garden. The second week they worked with gardener Amanda Clark in the Jemison Lily Garden, cutting back dead material and weeding. The group saved the best for last, ending their camp session at The Gardens “up-potting” over 250 oak seedlings to be planted in 2014. Besides the buzz of activity during the potting, the Youth Serve kids welcomed a cavalry of local television crews which came to video their volunteer work day. Incidentally, these oaks are part of our ongoing Centennial Tree Planting Project which focuses on the reforestation of native oaks through the Birmingham-metropolitan area. Partnerships with groups like Youth Serve of Birmingham are the perfect way for young adults to be welcomed as productive, active members of a community. Even though several formal volunteer assignments do require education or prior experience, a vast number of organizations offer the chance to try something new and value enthusiasm and creativity more than knowledge. As volunteers, young adults can demonstrate their independent abilities and can handle appropriate work according to their actual skill level, rather than be restricted by their age.

Did you know there was a paupers’ cemetery on the property of the Zoo and The Gardens? Known as Red Mountain Cemetery or South-Side Cemetery, it was used by the City of Birmingham from 1888 to 1906 as a place to bury the indigent dead. Lane Park, originally called Red Mountain Park, was the site of this cemetery which contained about 4,711 graves. The cemetery was abandoned in 1909 when the Ketona Potters Field was opened. articles mentioned a workman at The Gardens removing dirt from a spot near the Dunn Formal Rose Garden and uncovering at least three graves, facing east. Thanks to Cindy Pinger, Curator of Birds and Reptiles at the Zoo, I was given a peak at some of the burials at the Zoo. We now have a copy of the Record of Interments, Red Mountain Cemetery (1888-1906) in The Archives. These records give the names of the deceased, date of interment, cause of death, physician in charge, age, sex and race. If you know any stories about this cemetery, we encourage you to call The Archives and Rare Book Room at The Library at The Gardens.

Good Things Growing… In The Gardens

Starting in mid- to late September, visitors to The Gardens will be caught by surprise by a heavy, sweet and fruity perfume wafting through Blount Plaza. Looking everywhere, they will wonder where that delicious smell is coming from. That is, unless they step up into the Hill Garden. There, tucked in the niche in the limestone stairs that climb to the belvedere, they will find the source of the delightful aroma, the orange-flowered tea olive, Osmanthus fragrans ‘Aurantiacus’ (above left). This broadleaf evergreen shrub (over time a small tree) might surprise with its fall flowers unless you’re familiar with other Osmanthus, many of which offer similarly-timed treats. In many parts of China, tea olive is a mainstay ornamental whose flowers have been long been used to flavor dumplings, jams and soups. A version of the latter sampled in a hotel restaurant in Xian was pleasantly fragrant, with a chicken-y flavor and a slightly congealed texture. Most famously, this species is “the olive for tea” and black and green teas are infused with its flowers. In Hangzhou, tea olive is the official city flower and the Hangzhou Botanical Garden has seven acres devoted solely to the plant (above right). It’s hard to imagine just how intense the smell at peak bloom must be. Scores of local and regional cultivars were on display; many bore names of cities and colors, typically white, yellow and orange, but occasionally red, which we learned was a particularly deep orange.

‘Aurantiacus’ is much slower to set flower buds than other cultivars we have grown here. 5-gallon plants installed in the Hulsey Woods in 2006 took five years to flower, so be patient. (For the record, ‘Fudingzhu’ is by far the most precocious variety I know.) It is also on the early end of the Osmanthus bloom spectrum, introducing the season very well. Like its brethren, the flowers of ‘Aurantiacus’ are rather small, about ¼” wide (lower right). They are, however, numerous on mature plants and of course, pack a big fragrance that carries nicely on the wind. Exposed plants sometimes suffer slight leaf burning during extreme cold snaps, but recover quickly with new growth. Check out this cultivar and other tea olives at our Fall Plant Sale on October 19 and 20.

SHRUBS-Study landscape to determine plant needs. Check early varieties of camellias. You may want to replace those damaged in spring by late freezes. After fall growth is completed, spray all shrubs with a fungicide.

LAWNS-Plant seed of winter grasses where situation prevents planting permanent grasses. Winter seeds will appear soon. Stop fertilization three weeks before frost.
•
ROSES--Protect fall crops of blossoms from aphids and thrips. Keep plants healthy.
•
ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS-Last chance for planting perennials and biennials. Old clumps of perennials may be divided. Plant peonies.
•
BULBS-Spring-flowering bulbs may be planted late this month in North Alabama. Delay planting in South Alabama.
•
MISCELLANEOUS--Clean up infestations of insects on azaleas, camellias, boxwoods, gardenias, hollies, etc. If oil spray is needed, don’t use in freezing weather. Build compost bin or box;. leaves will be falling soon. Move houseplants indoors.
•
VEGETABLE SEED-Plant hardy vegetables and root crops.
•
VEGETABLE PLANTS-Plant cabbage, collards, cauliflower, celery, Brussels sprouts, and onion sets.

SHRUBS-Shrub plantings can be made. Water when needed. Note varieties of camellias in bloom. Start mulching all shrubs that do not have a mulch.

LAWNS--Continue to mow lawns until no new growth is noticeable.
•
ROSES-Continue insect and disease control practices. New rose catalogs will be coming in. Study closely; add some new varieties to your list.
•
ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS-Visit flower shows and gardens. List desirable varieties of mums. Clean up flower beds immediately after first killing frost.
•
BULBS--Plant tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, crocuses, Dutch irises, anemones, and ranunculuses. Watch planting depth. Dig caladiums; clean and store in warm place.
•
MISCELLANEOUS-Renew mulch around shrubs and rose beds. Loosen mulches that have packed down. Spray with oils before freezing weather to kill scale, mites, etc. Remove all dead stems and trash from flower beds. Transplant into small pots any cuttings taken earlier.
