Fay has been pivotal in the growth and establishment of the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, serving seven years (1982-1989) on the Master Plan Committee and six years on the Board of Directors (1999-2004). She helped The Gardens grow into a nationally known botanical garden and one of the most visited sites in Alabama. She was also the President of the Birmingham Botanical Society Auxiliary (1983-1985) and founded the Fall Fiesta fundraiser which began in 1993. Her perennial group, which propagates and grows perennial plants for The Gardens, is one of the strongest volunteer forces at The Gardens. It has recently renamed itself in her honor (The F.B.I. Perennial Group). Fay initially imported perennial plant stock from England and is responsible for introducing many varieties of perennial plants to gardeners in the Southeast. In 1994, she was awarded the Ida C. Burns Volunteer of the Year Award. Her recent major gift has funded improvements in the potting shed - the area she describes as “where the greenhouse staff and volunteers do their work.” These gifts include vital equipment such as a forklift, an ice machine, a new garage door and stainless steel soil tables on motorized lifts, as well as improved lighting and ventilation. Through this thoughtful donation, Fay has made The Gardens a safer and much more pleasant place to work and volunteer. Her leadership as a donor, volunteer and plants person has inspired many in the community to follow her example and support The Gardens. You won’t see anything like this anywhere but here at The Gardens.
As Mayor of the City of Birmingham and friend of Birmingham Botanical Gardens, I am pleased to offer my support for the Antiques at The Gardens event.
We hope you find something wonderful and unforgettable at our show, because buying an antique should be memorable. A product from another time, made with the skill and creative care of an artist or artisan, represents history and permanence. This is the antithesis of much of today’s soulless mass-produced merchandise. We hope you think – like we do – that these beautiful objects are the ultimate in recycling; they are heirlooms that will continue to bloom through future generations.
Antiques at The Gardens not only increases tourism, but provides educational opportunities for our school children and horticulture and landscape architecture students. This show further beautifies Birmingham Botanical Gardens and it provides a variety of plants to be enjoyed by all who attend.
While you’re at The Gardens, please check up on our biggest heirloom: our Conservatory. Phase I improvements are just wrapping up and our crystal palace is glittering again. The repairs and upgrades (including a retractable shade and insulation blanket and automatic door openers) have dramatically decreased our energy use and increased accessibility. Indoor education programs are back, too, and future exhibits are being planned to increase capacity for our free, award-winning Discovery Field Trips for Pre-K- middle school students and more. There is no more appropriate place than The Gardens to weave stories of the beauty of plants and gardens, and to tell of the singular importance of plants in our environment and our lives. The world today is full of many complex issues. Critical, nimble thinking and a keen grasp of science have been identified by many experts as the keys to success. The Gardens is, for many, a gateway to the natural world and its scientific foundation. It’s all part of Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ commitment to improving the science literacy of our community, and in partnership with the City of Birmingham, preserving and enhancing one of Alabama’s most beautiful and inspirational public institutions. orn in the Alabama sawmill town of Vredenburgh near Beatrice and Monroeville, Bobby McAlpine designed his first house at the age of five and hasn’t stopped since. Architect, romantic, and entrepreneur, he has gathered an eclectic family of professionals for his interior design firm, furniture lines and world-renowned, widely-published architecture firm now in its 30th year. Bobby is the author of the critically acclaimed best-selling book from Rizzoli International, The Home Within Us.
In his book, McAlpine speaks poignantly from his head and heart about everyone’s personal search for home. Armed with the perspective of a southerner and an arsenal of architectural experience, he reveals his thoughts on grace, the human condition, tenderness of place and what we know to be true in our lives, all based on his body of work created over the last three decades.

Meet Our Lecturer | Bobby McAlpine Tankersley Architecture makes its home in Montgomery’s Old Cloverdale neighborhood only a few yards from where Bobby began the firm 27 years earlier. Designed by the firm, their office is located in an award-winning New Urbanist infill development built on the site of the old A&P neighborhood grocery store. In an interview, Bobby shared with us his inspirations and plans for his role as a tastemaker and lecturer. Birmingham Botanical Gardens: What led you from small-town Alabama to architecture and design? Bobby McAlpine: Design was my way out and what a better way out into the world than design. Rural Alabama lit my appetite to see and create everything that was in my heart and mind. I could look around and not see

anything I recognized. I created a paradise within. Traveling inside to fantasize and imagine things that were not there, I started drawing floor plans when I was five and it stills fills my every day. BBG: You’re serving as both the featured speaker of the Red Diamond Lecture Series and as a Tastemaker for the 2013 Antiques at The Gardens weekend. What can guests expect from your talk? BMc: A walk together to explore the quest to match our physical surroundings with that of our inner beauty. Through my architecture, I’ll bear witness to where we have been. Through its lessons, where we are and where we hope to be. And I leave room to speak about what is currently on my heart.
BBG: What can we expect from your curated area, “Welcome Home”?

BBG: How did you pair with Cindy Smith and what will she bring to the partnership? BMc: We have known one another for decades. As I young man, I was her architect for her house, a home she still lives in today. We are life long friends and allies. We are simpatico. BBG: What is the foundation for “romantic houses 14

BMc: Breaking the rules.
BMc: History says I am tireless in both camps. I love exhausting the possibilities of an existing space as well as constructing a new one. Both are fertile laboratories. BBG: Are you more attracted to rural spaces or quaint, urban homes? What type of space is easier to work with? BMc: Concepts of country houses and in town houses are my daily diet. I love to explore their differences.

BBG: What five things are most essential to a romantic home? BMc: 1. Unselfconsciousness. It must be unaware of you; the house looks away. 2. An unexpected occurrence. 3. The play of subtlety and drama and an intoxicating spell. In party language, there is someone to shock and someone to be shocked. Light into darkness. A joke is only as good as its set up. 4. The complacency to weather incident. 5. Utter approachability. A kindly stance, relaxed posture. It is receiving not repelling.

Jane and Cindy have been partners in Circa since 1988. Jane attended Parsons School of Design and spent several years at the New York firm of Marshall Schule Associates. As a student in France, Cindy developed a love of antiques, which led her to launch Circa in 1979. Their first book, The Welcoming House, was released in April from Rizzoli. Among the first lines of their books, Bobby asks the question “What if the house inside you became the house you lived in?” and Jane and Cindy state “A house with an open door is like a friend with an open heart: inviting, generous of spirit, and constant to the core.” The thoughts of home permeate their daily lives. ho knew growing up in chaos as the middle of five children would teach her the importance of a functional home.

Those early childhood experiences helped her understand a ‘well-lived-in-home’ and today, as the mother of three active daughters, Dana Wolter is used to finding flip-flops on her staircase landing, music blaring from the sound system, and a gang of teenagers curled up on her sofa and chairs. She understands why one seeks a beautiful AND functional home. Dana offers her own unique brand, one that combines a calm color palette, clean lines, tactile fabrics and aged surfaces. By mixing textures such as natural stones, waxed woods, crusty antiques, Belgian linens, soft leathers and durable velvets, Dana and her team create spaces that only look better with everyday living. Jeff Dungan
began Dungan Nequette Architects in a small sunroom in 1999 with his partner Louis Nequette and a desire to get back to the real craft of architecture with thoughtfulness, care and passion. The sunroom was a hallmark, representing a beginning so important that when they created their new office in English Village over a decade later, they built a sunroom flooded with light to honor that same creative zeal. It is the drawing room, where one can often find Dungan sitting, listening to music, graphite in hand, putting to paper the dreams of his clients. For Dungan, design is more than mere style it is a movement, a way of life. His goal is to help people live better lives by creating inspired places for them to truly live. nterior designer Andrew Brown’s passion for travel began at an early age. When he was nine, he moved with his family to Europe and spent the next nine years living in France and West Africa, a very diverse cultural exposure that would have a major influence on his design aesthetic. “As a child, I was exposed to grand, aristocratic architecture and design in Europe and to more simplistic, yet equally intriguing, expressions of creativity in sub-Saharan Africa” says Brown. “I find myself drawn to dualities in design—to things that seemingly don’t have anything to do with each other. I love to mix the simple and the ornate, the modern with the antique, and I definitely see how I reference the cultural influences from my childhood.” His distinctive style, which has been characterized as “a mix of masculine glamour and brooding sensuality” and as having “international flavor” is known for incorporating items from around the globe, often acquired on buying trips to places such as Buenos Aires, Hong Kong and the Paris flea

Brown begins each project by getting to know his clients’ interests and personalities and then works to create a home that is tailored to them. “Creating spaces that are confident and alluring, yet ultimately livable, is always my goal,” says Brown. Meredith Keith’s artwork can be summarized in two words: texture and color. Celebrated Alabama artist Arthur Price has painted for as long as he can remember. An active gardener and lover of nature, Price is inspired by myth, legend and history of many cultures both past and present. Reminding the viewer of the peaceful balance and rejuvenation found in nature, Price’s work often manifests itself on large, unstretched canvas, stained with veils of paints that combine before the eyes to form ethereal beings, merging and emerging from within their world. 32

Ashley Spotswood
Ashley Spotswood could easily be labeled a landscape painter, but her work offers much more than the average landscape. With a unique sensitivity to light, Spotswood’s paintings recall a certain memory, mood, or place. Using oil and canvas on wooden panel, she creates beautifully rendered, atmospheric landscapes that encompass a deeply felt, somber tone.
David Kidd
For Atlanta artist, David Kidd, the physical act of applying paint has a strong influence on the direction that his paintings ultimately take. He describes his work as being process driven, saying, “While I may have a general concept of what I hope to convey, my goal is to not allow that preconceived idea to limit or restrain the creative process.” Kidd’s abstracts are painted in acrylic on panel and demonstrate an impressive range of color. .
Patty B. Driscoll
Patty B. Driscoll, a Birmingham native, received her Master of Fine Arts from the California College of the Arts in Oakland, California. For the past decade Patty B. has focused on the genre of Still Life painting, inspired by the realism of the 17th-Century Dutch masters. Most recently, she has been exploring the medium of egg tempera, mixing paint directly from powdered pigment and yolk to create her palette.

A native of Hunstville, Claire Forêt was born from generations of artists, and even her identical twin sister is a talented artist in her own right. With subjects ranging from portraits and still lives all the way to street scenes of Italy, Forêt’s style is demonstrative and fun and demonstrates a heartwarming passion for bringing-out life on a canvas.
Claire Kayser
Like her identical twin sister, Carole Forêt, artist and Chicago resident, Claire Kayser, comes from a long lineage of artists including painters, photographers, and writers. She claims, “It’s just a part of our being!” With her own work, Kayser manages to turn the mundane into something more beautiful or interesting. Both she and her sister agree that teaching art has helped them to find pure joy in their artistry.

Drew Galloway
Artist Drew Galloway’s interests in music, history, and literature has influenced and informed his work over the years. Galloway’s paintings are often created on “found” tin or metal. He explains of working with the unique medium, “I like to collaborate with the natural state of these materials and use their qualities as a creative jumping-off point. Often the end result is a collaboration of my intentions and Mother Nature.” With an aptitude for painting still water, Galloway creates scenes of ponds, rivers and bayous that punctuate the Southern landscape.
Rebecca Tully Fulmer
Rebecca Tully Fulmer is a mixed media artist using materials such as powdered charcoal, papers and acrylics along with painted and photographic images. She is a graduate of Auburn University School of Architecture where she majored in Interior Design. Rebecca is influenced by her years as a classically trained dancer, her professional career as an interior designer, and her mother, Toni Tully, who was a renowned artist throughout the Southeast. .
Catie Radney
Catie Radney is a professional artist educated at the University of Alabama. Born and raised in Brewton, Alabama, Catie’s home and studio are now in Alexander City. Her paintings are the product of intense and intimate conversations spoken in the language of form, space, color, and gesture. An exuberant and impassioned artist, Catie is consumed with the curious struggle of shaping an image from the imagination. Her broad range of color contrasting combined with vigorous brushwork imbues Catie’s paintings with a complex, emotional presence.
Barbara Nosef Zarzaur
A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, award-winning photographer Barbara Nosef Zarzaur primarily focuses on images found in the Deep South. For this particular show, however, Zarzaur explored the intricacies found in local and regional wildlife. Working not with digital film, but with custom print film and rarely used cibachrome, the photographer captures beautiful images that are, quite literally, one of a kind. .
Gina Hurry
Artist Gina Hurry has been a painter her whole life and says that what inspires her most is the actual creative process. She claims she can be impulsive, and finds great content with living in the moment. As a result, her work exhibits a fast-paced, textural style. Her paintings, with subjects ranging from figure studies to scenes of nature, posses a life of their own and exude a vibrancy rarely seen in two-dimensional art.

Lila Graves
The work of Alexander City artist, Lila Graves, often depicts simple subjects, but her complex and spiritual emotions come through in every canvas she paints. Working with a broad range of color, the artist’s paintings are vibrant and manage to encompass the greatest joys of life.
Courtney J. Garrett
Alabama raised Courtney J. Garrett creates a minimal yet sophisticated approach to capturing inspiring images of storms, rural landscapes and architectural sketches in her oil paintings and mixed media works. Influenced by many elements, from the methodology of Matisse to the architecture of
Brad Robertson
With his painting, Mobile artist Brad Robertson, works to combine color and texture to capture a sense of endlessness and the eternal. He explains, “My aim is always to express a feeling more than a physical object.” Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, Robertson gathers inspiration from the landscape of coastal Alabama. He works quickly, applying multiple layers of paint to create a sense of depth, intensity, and expansiveness.

Like many others in the creative world, Birmingham artist, Jim Burnett, uses his imagination as his main source of inspiration for his painting. Burnett, however, takes his imagination and applies it to his paintings on an entirely different level. Often painting ordinary objects in unordinary manners, Burnett challenges the expected and traditional points of view. Working in acrylic on canvas, Burnett enjoys addressing ideological inconsistencies in the arts and its relation to technology.
Tina Horenkamp Simonton
Working in a variety of mediums, Birmingham artist Tina Horenkamp Simonton, creates colorful paintings that are full of varying texture. The artist says of her work, “My paintings are meditations on redemption and transformation, in which biological forms are combined with variations on architectural drawing conventions. I reference sections, thresholds and other spatial relationships, and often use discarded or outdated drafting tools and creative toys to generate fields that can be manipulated.” Simonton’s thorough artistic education shows through in her talent. The artist received her MFA and BFA in painting, as well as a BS in architecture.

F
ounded in 2002, Chateau Domingue is one of the premier importers of reclaimed and aged architectural elements and antiques in the United States. Proprietor Ruth Gay travels to Europe several times a year unearthing beautiful finds from ages past. An average of four containers per month are filled with items from the 15th through 19th century, including French limestone flooring, and architectural elements such as stone surrounds, mantels and enormous doors and gates. Since opening its doors, Chateau Domingue’s “warehouse” has grown from 5,000 square feet to a three-acre complex. redicting the future is what drives Lydia Pursell, whether it’s buying jewelry for her shop or styling a cover for Southern Living magazine that doesn’t hit stands for a year. “Current trends can be fun, but expensive. Understanding which ones will stand the test of time is the challenge,” says Lydia. “What will your audience like or discard as too trendy? I think about this in my shop (from wall color to pillows) and in my styling for publications.” Lydia began her career at Southern Accents magazine as an editor, travel writer and stylist. She was the Senior Stylist at Cooking Light magazine and on the launch teams of Coastal Living and Cottage Living. Fifteen years later, she now adds Southern Living and New York-based Country Living to her list, and is currently styling her third book with Oxmoor House. Lydia lives in Birmingham with her husband of thirteen years and their nine-year-old daughter Saylors. She has three shops; all named Leaf & Petal, yet each different in their style and products. The flagship store, established in 1974, is located in Mountain Brook Village, the second in Vestavia Hills and the third at Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Looking to the future as always, she is working on an edited collection of lifestyle pieces including: clothing, jewelry, home décor and one-of-a-kinds. It will debut on her website www.lydiapursell.com in spring 2014.
D
iscovering and connecting the theories of ancient techniques in art through modern design has been Kitty White’s vision throughout her career. Kitty’s work has spanned many art and design fields from various forms of painting techniques to textiles and jewelry and interiors. After graduating from the University of Alabama in Apparel Design, Kitty spent time in San Francisco and New York City, where she began her studies with painted finishes, gilding, color theory and learning the ancient craft of verre églomisé.
Upon returning to Alabama, Kitty took a job with local designer Richard Tubb as an assistant Interior Decorator. While working for Tubb, she began to apply her skills with painted finishes to many of her projects. The demand for her skill and passion for painting led Kitty to open her own studio at Pepper Place, where she worked on a range of projects for commercial and residential interiors. She also began applying her painting techniques to bowls and accessories for the home, in cities across the U.S. including San Francisco-based furniture store Filamento. One of Kitty’s favorite projects was glazing the walls for Birmingham’s renowned Highland’s Bar and Grill. In 2004, Kitty expanded her design interests into jewelry. What started as a hobby soon became business. Kitty’s jewelry could be found at boutiques in Palm Beach, Dallas and Nashville. The unexpected mixture of semi-precious stones, beads and various metals along with an ethnic influence made Kitty’s jewelry unique and a rare find. Her jewelry is now carried exclusively by Regina Jewelry and Treasures located in Gus Mayer. Working with paint techniques and pattern on textiles and trims for the home has been Kitty’s newest interest. She lives in Birmingham, Alabama, with her husband and two daughters. Her home, which is a palette of exploration, has been featured in Cottage Living and Birmingham Home and Garden. B irmingham B otanical G ardens

The Artisan Garden David & Holley Camp with Helen Harmon
D
avid Camp formed Camp Construction Company in 1990, with emphasis on the art of building. Today the company builds both houses and gardens, offering clients three choices in service: design only; design/build; and build only. David believes that house and garden are equal partners in creating a home. He is inspired by the ideals of the English Arts and Crafts movement, which rejected factory-made building components in favor of regional materials fashioned in hand, by local artisans. Holley Camp founded holleygardens on the belief that everyone deserves a modest, sacred space. Her education at the University of Virginia informs her love of lush simplicity. After traveling the country as a food writer, interviewing chefs, farmers and vintners, Holley became a master gardener, studying at the Historic Landscape Institute. Her lived-in rooms celebrate native and historic plants through clean design. All of Holley’s gardens are organically tended, for healthy birds, bees, butterflies, bullfrogs and children.

Helen Harmon is a master gardener whose work includes the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church meadow and a horticultural therapy garden at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. In her free time, she is also a painter, photographer and potter. Helen’s interest in craft makers has led her down many trails. Her current project involves sustainably planting her zone 6 garden in western North Carolina. The Artisan Garden hopes to demonstrate an accessible, manageable garden room. Animated by the work of artists, it showcases edible, native, and historic plants, which also happen to be beautiful. The garden was created in the manner of the ancient cathedrals: built by guildsmen to a general plan, while often allowing them to implement their own design. For the Artisan Garden, a spatial plan was made, the requirement of simplicity conveyed, and the artisans finished it as they saw fit. This garden is a tribute to the craftsmen who inspire us—and to the farmers, who literally sustain us.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens brings science alive for thousands of children and adults
W
e’re more than a pretty face. Sure, Alabama’s largest living museum offers some of the state’s most scenic trails over 67.5 acres and among more than 12,000 different living plants in over 25 unique gardens. And we’ve opened our gates every day from dawn until dusk for 50 years, allowing the citizens of the Magic City a free opportunity to share magical moments with the ones they love . We’re the most visited free attraction in the state of Alabama, and our scenic backdrop lures many visitors from dates, proms, weddings, engagements and photo sessions. But our mission, our reason for being, is to educate the public about plants, gardens and the environment. Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens works hard, year-round, to raise money to fund free, curriculum-based Discovery Field Trips to Birmingham-area schoolchildren. Our award-winning, flagship program is designed to meet the Alabama State Course of Study on six elementary school (K-6) science themes: plant propagation, nutrient cycling (George Washington Carver), Native Americans, tropical rainforests, interdependence (Barber Alabama Woodlands) and trees. It is a program that is expanding to include middle school students beginning this Fall. 60

Birmingham Botanical Gardens| Beyond These programs are offered free to schools and students and are led by trained docents. Last year, this program continued its growth, achieving an impressive number of 10,700 students served. Much of these funds are raised through our special events, like Antiques at The Gardens. Because of the public’s participation and generosity in these events, nearly all the students of those who participated were able to do so absolutely free, including transportation expenses. By bringing the classroom to life, we’re laying the educational foundation for future engineers, botanists, doctors, chefs, chemists, innovators and other likeminded individuals.
We’re also proud to have the created the first Horticultural Therapy program in Alabama, a program still in relative infancy and our fastest growing. In 2012, the program evolved into Plant Adventures, an inclusive program that explores the relationship between people and place. Plant Adventures calls one of our newest gardens home, the Arrington Plant Adventure Zone, an educational garden that serves as a base for the program.
