A privately owned corporation headquartered in Houston, BGE was established in 1975 by founders Pat Brown, PE, RPLS, and Richard Gay, PE, through the acquisition of MercerBrown Engineers, Inc. In 1983, the firm changed its name to Brown, Gay and Associates; six years later, it was renamed Brown & Gay Engineers, Inc.
Pat Brown served as the first president from 1975 until he retired in 2003. Richard Gay then became president and CEO until 2008, when he announced Ronnie Mullinax, PE, as his successor. He served as the third president and CEO from 2008 to 2013, and was succeeded by Lee Lennard, PE, F.SAME in 2014.
Driven by our geographic expansion, in 2014, we unveiled a new logo and identity for the firm – BGE. The name BGE, Inc. was officially registered in 2018.
Our expansion outside the Houston market began in 2005, with the opening of our Fort Worth office. The following year, BGE opened an office in Austin, and in 2007, our doors opened in Frisco. As our operations in north and central Texas continued to grow with the addition of offices in Dallas in 2010 and San Antonio in 2011, so did the Houston region. We opened an office in The Woodlands and Katy in 2013. In 2015, BGE expanded into Arkansas. An office in Monticello, AR, as well as a second office location in Austin opened in 2018, and our Waco office opened in 2019.
Diversification of services, markets, clients and geographies continued with our expansion into the southeast United States. BGE opened an office in Sarasota, Florida, in early 2017, followed closely by an office in Charlotte, North Carolina. This region has continued its expansion with offices in Tampa and Vero Beach, Florida in 2019 and Raleigh, North Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia in 2020.
In the 1970s and 80s, BGE focused on civil engineering and surveying services for private residential land development projects. The 1990s brought expansion into site development and entry into the public sector through the addition of transportation and public works services. In 2010, environmental services was formed, with the addition of land planning as a practice area a few years later, in 2013.
Today, we offer a full suite of consulting services that complement our core competencies – from air quality to cultural resources; geographic information systems to unmanned aerial systems; and much more.
