Springfield bridge to be renamed, decorated with mural to honor Sonya Massey
On July 6, 2024, Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old black woman, was shot and killed in her home by Sean Grayson, a white deputy of the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office in Woodside Township near Springfield, Illinois, United States. Massey called 911 about a possible prowler and shortly afterward met her fate. No one could image the uneventful words that cost Massey her life. Officer Grayson brutally assassinated the mother, daughter and friend of the Massey family by shooting her in her face just as he had promised her. Her last words, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus." You don’t have to be a religious person to know that only demons fearfully react to The NameJesus.
Grayson has been arrested and indicted on first-degree murder and aggravated batterycharges. Yet, that isn’t justice for Massey or the children that she leaves behind. Her death is a symptom of the systemic racism that continues to drive violence against Black and African Americans. Officer Grayson was a despicable human being who never should have been on the police force. The community mourns not just the loss of Massey, but also the countless lives affectedbythesamepervasiveinjustice. In the wake of this tragedy, grassroots organizations are working tirelessly to support Massey's family. Educational funds for her children have been set up, andcounselingservicesarebeingprovided to help them cope with their unimaginable loss. Activists are pushing for reforms, advocating for policies that would prevent someonelikeGraysonfromeverwearinga badge.

Life's most challenging moments often feel like battles, testing our strength, resolve, and faith. These battles can manifest as health crises, financial struggles, relationship problems, or deep personal doubts. When we face such overwhelming trials, it's easy to feel defeated. However, the Bible offers wisdom, encouragement, and assurance that we are not alone in our struggles. God's word provides the strength and guidance we need to endure and emerge victorious.
The Story of David and Goliath is my favorite story to share regarding victory over circumstances that seem larger than life.
One of the most inspiring biblical accounts of overcoming great odds. David, a young shepherd, faced the giant warrior Goliath armed only with a sling and his faith in God. In 1 Samuel 17:45-47, David boldly declares, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand.”
David's unwavering faith and trust in God's power remind us that no matter how insurmountable our battles may seem, with God on our side, we can overcome. It is through His strength, not ours, that we find victory.
Strength in Weakness: Paul's Testimony In our weakest moments, we can find God's strength most profoundly. The apostle Paul shares this powerful truth in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, where he recounts God's words to him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Paul then concludes, “Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ”
Paul's testimony teaches us that our struggles and weaknesses are not signs of defeat but opportunities for God's grace to work through us. By admitting our limitations and relying on His power, we can endure and even thrive in the face of adversity.

Eating a balanced, healthy diet is very important. Maintaining a nutritious diet throughout life can help prevent noncommunicable diseases, and other health issues, including malnutrition. A diet that comprises the six main food groups-fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, dairy, and fats/oils-and provides the appropriate amounts of vitamins, minerals, essential nutrients, and calories is referred to as being balanced. A balanced diet lowers the risk of acquiring chronic illnesses and disorders. Being healthy goes beyond simply eating well; we also need to be aware of the ingredients that are in the foods we eat.
A barcode appears on the majority, if not all foods and products we purchase. This barcode when scanned provides a detailed list of ingredients included in foods and other products. One particularly useful app is Yuka. When used to scan barcodes, whether it be consumables or cosmetics, lists not only ingredients but highlights important information such as high sugar and sodium content, or the presence of potentially harmful compounds. It can be quite disconcerting to learn what's included in many foods that are consumed daily. I would encourage everyone to become more informed and vigilant to the ingredients listed in the foods you consume.
Even foods that appear healthy or promoted as such may potentially harbor harmful ingredients. I encourage people to avoid harmful ingredients in foods by becoming familiar with the ingredients that seem unusual in their food choices.
Educating oneself on the various additives, preservatives, and artificial ingredients can make a significant difference in making healthier choices. For instance, understanding the implications of consuming too much added sugar, artificial sweeteners, or hydrogenated oils can lead to better decisions that contribute to long-term health. It's also valuable to consider portion sizes and the overall quality of the food you consume. Even nutritious foods can contribute to weight gain and other health issues if eaten in excessive amounts. Portion control is essential to maintain weight management.
Beyond individual choices, advocating for clearer food labeling and better regulations on food ingredients can also play a significant role in public health. By supporting initiatives that promote transparency and accountability within the food industry, we can collectively push for a healthier food environment.
In summary, while eating a balanced diet is crucial, being informed about what goes into the foods we eat is equally important. With the right knowledge and tools, such as barcode scanning apps like Yuka, we can make more conscious decisions that promote our overall well-being and contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

According to 1 Timothy 2:9-14 the Apostle advises women to dress modestly with decency and propriety; adorning themselves. This serves to encourage women to focus on inner beauty and character with the emphasis is on cultivating virtues such as humility, kindness, and a gentle spirit. This approach has baffled women since its conception. On any given day you can find women neglecting the outward appearance of themselves hoping that it will conceal the inner working. Clearly omitting the key word there; Adorn. A woman expresses her self admiration by her choice of clothing.
In a broader sense, this principle can be extended to all aspects of life, suggesting that true beauty and worth come from within. We take pride in introducing to you Fashionista Verna Best who wants to consider this scripture the next time you prepare your OOTD. Proverbs 51:30 praised.
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised!
