WE B ELIE VE IN TH E POWER OF TH E ARTS Our Citywide Creative Arts program provides a path for youth from marginalized communities to access high-quality art instruction, in an environment where they can feel heard, valued, loved and understood. This exposure builds confidence, creativity, and focus, providing a new way for youth to express themselves, while building skills in the creative arts.

For many of our members, the Citywide Creative Arts program is the first and only place where they are exposed to creative outlets such as painting, photography, woodworking, sketching, dance, acting and music production.

Our dedicated team of art directors are both youth development professionals and active members of the San Francisco arts community, bringing a wealth of experience and community-connections to our program.

Ryan is an artist who enjoys experimenting with new and challenging mediums and techniques, including textile airbrushing, 3D extractions, and his next undertaking: realistic portraiture drawing.

How did you get involved in the Citywide Creative Arts program?

Q:

I got involved because I really love art, but I only knew how to draw letters in a nice way. I wanted to learn how to do things other than graffiti.

How do you feel when you’re working in the art room?

Q:

When I’m drawing, coloring or airbrushing, I feel great because I’m expressing how I feel. It feels great to know that I’m getting better at it.

My advice for kids starting art is to try it because you probably will be better at it than you think.

WE B ELIE VE IN GIVING BACK Keystone is a Boys & Girls Clubs of America program that encourages teens, ages 14 to 18, to become leaders in their communities. Members participate in a national service project and are required to raise $3,000 annually to qualify for participation in the Regional and National Keystone Conferences.

Katya is an active participant in Keystone Club and a Teen Staff Member.

How do you think Keystone has affected your life?

Q:

Keystone allowed me to have connections with different organizations, learn how to communicate efficiently and how to be a leader. I’m the oldest of four, and being a leader is important to me.

What does community service mean to you?

Q:

When participating in my community, I feel grateful for who I have become throughout my life. If it wasn’t for the Club, I would probably be home and not making a difference. But I have made a A:

Whenever I think about helping others, in a way, I’m helping myself. We live in a world where everyone thinks for themselves, but it only takes a couple people to make a difference and leave a smile on someone’s face.

How does the Keystone Advisor support the Keystone Clubs?

Q:

They have a big influence on us. They are our role models. They teach us valuable skills and we reciprocate that too. My adviser, Jonell, is one of the most influential people in my life. Not only does he guide Keystone but he cares for every single individual just as if we were family. We are family. He leads us in the right direction and is why we received Legacy Status for Keystone. I couldn’t be more proud of the support and devotion he gives to the Keystone Club.

WE B ELIE VE IN JOB RE ADIN ESS CareerConnect is our youth workforce development program. The program seeks to improve Club members' leadership skills and professional competencies while exposing them to careers in some of the fastest growing industries in the Bay Area.

Jesus is the 2016 Youth of the Year from Mission Clubhouse, a Mission Clubhouse Teen Staff, an accomplished photographer, and an active participant in CareerConnect.

What has been your experience with CareerConnect at the Club?

Q:

I really got started in the career programming at the Club when I started high school. Career exposure events gave me a taste of A:

what it’s like to work in the real world. What I learned was that you can do anything you want, as long as you really love it. Any opportunity is a great one. With all the companies we went to, I learned that I wouldn’t mind working at any of them.

What have you learned through working as Teen Staff at the Club?

Q:

Through being teen staff, I learned a lot about leadership, being a role model, and being responsible and reliable. You have to be passionate about your job and dedicated, especially with the kids. You’ve got to make the kids feel safe, because if they don’t feel safe they’re not going to want to be there.

A:

How did the Boys & Girls Clubs impact your plans for the future?

Q:

Boys & Girls Clubs’ youth development programs made me realize what I want to do for my career. I want to become a registered nurse.

The Club opened my eyes to the medical field when we took a field trip to SF General Hospital. Through that, I saw what I wanted to become. I chose the Club. . . and the Club helped me choose my future.

WE B ELIE VE IN OUTDOOR EDUC ATION Camp Mendocino is our residential summer camp in the heart of Mendocino County. For 85 years, Bay Area youth have had the opportunity to escape their urban environment for an amazing 10-day experience that includes overnight hikes, mountain biking, a ropes course, swimming, archery, arts & crafts, talent shows, camp fires, and much more. Camp is an outdoor education and environmental awareness program focused on the character and leadership development of our young people. As a result of their time at Camp, youth gain independence, build confidence, start new friendships, and develop new skills and talents.

Sukai is the 2016 Youth of the Year for Camp Mendocino.

What does Camp Mendocino mean to you?

Q:

Boys & Girls Clubs, and especially Camp Mendocino, has helped me so much in my life. Camp has always been a safe place for me, and I know it’s a safe place for a lot of people. Camp was a place I could depend on every year to take me in for the summer, and it’s where I learned that I am important.

Follow your dreams because it’s your life. And if anyone tells you that you can’t do something, they don’t know what they’re talking about. You can do anything you really want to, as long as you’re willing to work hard for it.

GOING DEEPER INTO YOUTH DE VELOPM ENT Standing With Kids: Providing Behavioral Health Services in a Youth Development Setting Behavioral Health Services (BHS) offers our members culturally competent mental health support that is child-centered and trauma-informed. BHS is part of the Club community, working hand-in-hand with Club staff in the Clubhouse. With a diverse staff, the BHS team brings a deep cultural understanding of the youth served, providing specialty support based on need. The program was launched in 2004 with one BHS professional and has grown to four permanent staff positions and seven interns. The BHS team offers ongoing direct service at seven sites, while providing as-needed support services at all other BGCSF locations.

You will frequently see Debby or her team helping youth develop their social skills over a game of pool or while shooting hoops, or building their academic confidence in Power Hour.

afterschool model and approaches clinical support in a manner that is consistent with BGCSF’s overall drop in model. In fact, at a Club you would likely not be able to identify who the Behavioral Health Services staff member is. Club staff are amazing, with big hearts and great energy. But the staff are taxed by the emotional and social needs of our members who are coping with complex challenges, often at very young ages. The more the BHS staff can do in plain sight to help our kids consistently practice new skills, the more successful that child becomes at the Club, at school and beyond. We strive to take the shame out of needing help.

Q : How does BHS help kids cope during challenging times?

A: I am amazed by the inherent resilience in young people. The magic is in them—our challenge is to understand what they are trying to tell us through their behaviors. Because we wrap around our members and offer supports in familiar settings, we are better able to customize a plan to meet their evolving needs. BHS includes youth, their families, and their Club staff as key partners in their care.

Our partnership with Clark Construction continues to grow. 2016 marked the 2nd Annual Clark Construction charity golf tournament that benefited BGCSF. This is an incredible community event and we are honored to be a continued partner. We also are honored to see Clark employees engaged in volunteer events as well as to partner with Clark on our facility updates.

Department of Children, Youth & Their Families offers dedication and enthusiasm to our work. We work closely together every day to make this a city where children thrive, nurturing a new generation of people who will proudly say they were “born and raised in San Francisco.” DCYF is our largest funder and most influential in shaping our performance measures and data analysis.

Gap Inc. has made a mark on countless programs and strategies: employees volunteering weekly at the Don Fisher Clubhouse, NextGen Leadership Council representation, teen career experiences, and human resource expertise, to name a few. Gap’s co-founders, Doris & Don Fisher, built a culture around the power to unlock new possibilities in communities; we are thankful for Gap’s unwavering support.

The Golden State Warriors achievements on the court continue to benefit members of BGCSF. From Hoops for Kids, to generous game-day ticket donations, to offering unique opportunities for our youth to meet players and experience basketball clinics and Board representation, the Warriors are always thinking of the youth of San Francisco. Thank you to the Warriors for your commitment to the community!

For 69 years, The Guardsmen has sponsored Camp Mendocino. Each summer, close to 900 campers benefit from Guardsmen scholarships, without which young people simply could not afford a residential camp experience.

Camp Mendocino and The Guardsmen share the belief that outdoor education leads to dramatic improvement in leadership, communication skills, self-confidence, and understanding our impact on the world.

Guittard Chocolate Company is a leader of innovation and quality in both their craft and in their support of their community. We are proud to call Guittard a committed partner and we see first hand how they support and give back to the youth of San Francisco. THAN K YOU, CORPOR ATE AN D FOU N DATION DONORS Kaiser Foundation Hospitals supports Why Try, an evidence-based resilience-building program that addresses the unique needs of our middle-school members. Kaiser also sponsored Middle School Girls Day, an all-day “youth voice” event. We see strong alignment with Kaiser as we teach youth how to positively cope with negative situations.

Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development (MOHCD) is our key partner in ensuring our facilities are safe and accessible for youth. Last year, with MOHCD support, we completed major capital projects at three of our Clubhouses, including plumbing and roofing.

MOHCD’s financial investments and capital expertise are invaluable.

PwC has been a key supporter of BGCSF since 2000. From supporting our Boys & Girls Night Out annual event, to membership on our Board of Governors and NextGen Leadership Council, to hours of skilled volunteer tutoring support, PwC has been there.

We are grateful for all the PwC employees who partner with us to shape future generations.

Two years ago, BGCSF entered an important partnership with Saint Francis Foundation to work towards building community connectedness and creating a healthier Tenderloin neighborhood. Saint Francis Foundation is the premiere supporter of our Master Tenant role at Boeddeker Park. A true thought partner, the Foundation guides our work in this collective impact model.

Since 2014, Twitter has been a critical partner supporting youth and families in the Tenderloin and Mid-Market neighborhoods. Twitter’s support provides camperships for youth to attend Camp Mendocino, college scholarships for two Tenderloin Clubhouse members, and funds to ensure robust programming at the Tenderloin Clubhouse and Boeddeker Park continues. We are especially proud to engage Twitter volunteers during annual #FridayforGood events as well as during community celebrations.

United has been an invaluable partner to Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco since 2009. As BGCSF’s Official Airline, United’s ongoing support provides our student-athletes in the Rebels Basketball program and our Keystone leadership club with the ability to compete and attend some of the top tournaments and conferences across the country.

Visa continues to be a leading partner, providing generous financial and volunteer support. We are honored to have Visa employees volunteer at our Clubhouses, conduct back-to-school drives, and donate in-kind materials.

The son of 50-year BGCSF Board member, John N. Callander, Bruce Callander was introduced to the Club by his father in high school, when he started volunteering monthly at a local bingo fundraiser at the Club. He continued to volunteer with BGCSF as a young adult in various capacities: as a horse wrangler at Camp Mendocino, a volunteer at Boys Night Out, and a member of the Guardsmen, before joining BGCSF’s Board of Governors.

Between 2013 and 2016, Bruce served as the Board Chair. Bruce continues to actively serve on the Board today.

Bruce and his family have made BGCSF a philanthropic priority, investing in critical programs and services that provide opportunity

to youth from disadvantaged circumstances in San Francisco.

Recently, Bruce joined The Legacy Club, a group of individuals committed to sustaining the financial health of BGCSF by including the organization in their wills and estate plans.

We’re grateful to all our Legacy Club members, including Bruce, who inspire others to think about how to support this anchor institution long into the future.
