A Letter from Our Board President I volunteered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County as a board member with about the same amount of knowledge that most people have about the Club; it benefits kids by giving them a place for after-school activities and school breaks. Over the past eight years as their treasurer and now as board president, I have learned that the Club has a much larger and meaningful impact in the community than I ever imagined. As a working mom, I appreciate a place where children can feel comfortable doing activities they enjoy. Having a safe environment where you know your child is happy and thriving brings peace of mind to both parents and children, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County achieve this tremendous feat daily. While at the Club, children are provided academic support, a multitude of physical and learning activities, meals and snacks, and staff members who genuinely care and support them. While at the Club, kids love spending time with their friends, and for that period, nothing else matters. Some of these kids may be coming from food-insecure homes or difficult situations, but when they are at the Club, they can leave those worries at the door and enjoy themselves in ways children should. And the “Clubs” are not limited to just the traditional Club Houses. They are also on many Kern County school sites as well. Their services benefit so many kids daily that year after year; I continue to look for ways to support the organization, from being a board member to joining Club 66 (monthly affiliation giving) to bringing friends and donors to the Club’s spectacular events. I encourage everyone to get in touch with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County to find out how to invest in our community’s kids. Imagine how wonderful our world would be where every child had the opportunity to grow socially/ emotionally and discover their talents in a safe, supportive environment. For many children in Kern County, the Boys and Girls Club is that place. While interviewing a potential candidate for joining our Board of Directors, I was asked, “How do you measure success for your Board Members?” This is a group of amazing volunteers who prioritize the Club with their time, talent, and resources and are our First Responders when it comes to investing in the Club. First, we ask, “What fills your cup in a volunteer experience?” It could be the satisfaction of successfully completing something for taskoriented people and being free to move to the next project. For some, it means being part of something greater than themselves and knowing that their effort contributes to the overall good. And for others, it means giving a child the opportunities and childhood memories like the ones they built as a child…or giving them things they missed out on as a child.

Another area to measure would be the leveraging of resources to benefit our children. This would include professional support for an area of Club operations such as human resources or law. It could also mean getting your business involved, securing donations, helping with events, or opening the doors of the Club to new stakeholders through advocacy activities. I believe Jesse Magdaleno should be Youth of the Year so that other kids get to hear his message of hope, his voice and Club experience.” Amy Smith, Executive Director Bakersfield Museum of Art The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County is thrilled to announce our 2021 Youth of the Year, the very accomplished Mr. Jesse Magdaleno. Jesse will compete next at the Boys & Girls Clubs Coastal Region Youth of the Year competition in March. Jesse was selected by Boys & Girls Club staff from over 35 candidates from 64 separate Boys & Girls Clubs in Kern County. As a junior at Highland High School, Jesse is extremely active in the drama department but enjoys math as his favorite subject. He has been performing as part of an elite Boys & Girls Club talent team since he was eight years old. He has accumulated thousands of community service hours by using his gifts to entertain at local, regional, and national Boys & Girls Club events. The Bakersfield Symphony, American Red Cross, Bakersfield North Rotary Club, and other local groups have benefitted from Jesse’s performances on their behalf. Jesse was scheduled to co-host events at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America National Conference in Florida in 2020 and perform at numerous other events and local theatrical productions, which have been all put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions. He has spent this last year attending virtual high school, performing in local shows and music videos, all while helping to serve over 4,000 meals per day to children through the Boys & Girls Club’s nutrition/meals program. Youth of the Year Program The Youth of the Year is Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program for Club members, promoting service to Club, community, and family; academic success; strong moral character; life goals; and poise and public speaking ability. Locally, our Clubs recognize members who are high school sophomores through seniors to represent their Clubs at Boys & Girls Clubs at a local competition with other Clubs. The winner of the Youth of the Year title moves on to the state competition. State winners each receive an academic award and participate in regional competitions. Five regional winners each receive a $10,000 scholarship and compete on the national level. The National Youth of the Year receives up to an additional $50,000 scholarship and is installed by the United States President.
