A Letter from Our Executive Director This year has no doubt been challenging for all of us — especially for those families who were already struggling. The pandemic has heightened the critical situations for families already living paycheck to paycheck — even entire communities. Those in the greatest need were hit the hardest and left overwhelmed by job loss, hunger, and the impact of kids missing months of school. Without Boys & Girls Clubs, a generation of young, hopeful lives could be left behind. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County has been a valuable partner in helping kids succeed for over 54 years. But this year, succeeding means even more: it means surviving. Thanks to you, the Boys & Girls Club adapted its services to help in new ways, and it couldn’t have happened without you. But as COVID-19 carries on across the country, so does the need for food, childcare, necessary supplies, and the educational support kids require to build better futures. It’s our responsibility to do everything possible — and Clubs need your help. Support from friends like you will help the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County continue to provide critical services such as: • Full-day programming to keep kids thriving • Healthy meals for children six days per week • In-Person and virtual mentoring and tutoring to keep children and teens on the right path • Learning Hubs so students can avoid dangerous learning gaps and falling behind Right now, we must work together to make sure children and neighborhoods come out of this crisis stronger than ever. CREATING SAFE SPACES Every Child Deserves to Feel Safe. Our children’s health and welfare have always been a top priority at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. When the owners of S.C. Anderson generously agreed to orchestrate the Club’s entryway remodeling at the Armstrong Youth Center to safeguard our kids and staff. We were so thankful. A team of experts was brought in for everything from the architectural designs to multi-faceted construction (check out the list of donors to the right). In addition to installing a secured electronic safety door, the gateway to the Club, S.C. Anderson also installed plexiglass in front of the reception desk to control access to our program areas and our Club members. Our children, staff, and guests are now greeted in the secured general reception area with a virtual receptionist who takes a no-contact temperature reading and an automated hand sanitizer. With a pleasant greeting from a masked Club staff person, the guest is then permitted to enter through electronically secured doors. They also resolved the shortage of bathrooms at the Club. Although the children’s restrooms hosted a reasonable capacity, the Club’s adult bathroom was limited to one restroom for as many as 30 managers at any given time. This shortage resulted in the youth restrooms being frequently shut down for adult use. In addition to the new security features, the foyer is warm, welcoming, and appreciated by everyone who visits the Armstrong Youth Center. S.C. Anderson has given the Armstrong Youth Center an added measure of security and alleviated many concerns regarding access to our building and children.
