To see my children grow with confidence in their abilities and knowledge of something that they learned at the Club, this is why I volunteer. Our Team - these dedicated ladies and gentlemen strive every day to coach and teach each child to be the best that they can be, this is why I volunteer. As a parent, I have witnessed this dedication to these children, regardless of background, that the team at each Club has, this is why I volunteer. How each child lights up when they are recognized by name by a team member for their accomplishments, this is why I volunteer.

A common question I get asked is “Why did you get involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County?” The quickest answer I will give is that my two sons attend the Club. Succinct and to the point, but not quite truly imbuing the full reality of why I volunteer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. Honestly, I’m proud to say that my children are Club Kids! To me, this means that they are in a safe, enriching environment with the opportunity to learn from the many dedicated activity

leaders who believe in their potential. As a parent, my number one concern is my children’s safety, health and happiness. I love it when I get to the Club and my children are upset that I’ve arrived too soon to pick them up. This tells me that they are enjoying the time they spend with the friends they’ve made at the Club and the various activities that the team has organized for them. My children get the chance to learn about science, computers, sports and the arts. This is their time to explore and tryout new activities to see what they enjoy. When they come home ecstatic that they were able to do a really cool science experiment or build a robot that they were able to remote-

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?” So, why did I get involved with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County? Because every child, regardless of where they come from, deserves the opportunity to learn and develop to the best of their abilities in a safe and welcoming environment. So the question I have for you is, “How can I get you involved?” Please, join me, our Board of Directors, Team Members and the other volunteers who give our time, services and money to improve the lives of the children of Kern County.

A Leader with Heart and Vision Girls Clubs of Kern County. There are a number of people I would like to thank. First and foremost I need to thank my wife, Patsy. Having four kids and being that supportive is amazing. My kids, from the first time Fletcher and Stanley went to the Club, that’s all I hear about. There is no better affirmation than their persistence in trying to go back. I wish I could thank each and every one of our donors. Without your generous support and belief in our Mission, we would not be here to serve all the kids we do. For that, thank you.

When the end of my term approached, I found myself reflecting on my time as President of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kern County. Ten years ago I remember talking to my wife about how much I would love to be the President of this organization. To have an impact on our community of that magnitude would be incredible. At that time we served roughly 800 kids a day at 8 club locations, and we partnered with one school district. Today we are on track to serve roughly 7,000 kids a day at 62 sites covering 9 school districts across Kern County. We’ve created a meal program this year serving 14,000 nutritious meals each month. All of this making us one of the largest Clubs in the nation. “To empower and enable young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as produc

tive, caring, responsible citizens.” For the last seven years, that mission has been at the forefront of my thoughts. Everyday there are countless individuals and partners striving to fulfill the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County’s Mission Statement. I could not be more proud of so many individuals who together make up the Clubs’ family. I have had the privilege to meet Zane for coffee at least once a week over the course of seven years. The perspective and appreciation that has given me cannot be expressed in words. Whether it was an issue the Club was dealing with, a strategy to move the Club forward, or a discussion about a success or struggle of one of our kids. If you are reading, this then you are a part of our family. We are the Boys &

to increase Average Daily Attendance for middle school age Club members in 2016, with the goal of keeping them on track to enter high school.

Southern California Edison $5,000 to underwrite the participation of at least 50

to underwrite the MusicMakers-Recording Studio at Armstrong Youth Center and to to develop 21st century skills in junior high school and high school Club members.

Bank of the Sierra - $5,000

will allow 50 underprivileged children (ages 5 years to 17 years) to attend the Boys & Girls Club â€“ Armstrong Youth Center in East Bakersfield and participate in our five-day per week after-school enrichment and education program.

CarMax - $10,000 to support the Triple

Play -- Healthy Habits program at the Stockdale Club. The program demonstrates how eating right, keeping fit and forming positive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle.

Sanford Harmony at National University - $500 to encourage diversity and inclusion, empathy and critical thinking, communication, problem

solving, and positive peer relationships to prevent bullying behavior from developing with our Club members.

Childrenâ€™s Advocates Resource Endowment - $9,454 to optimize our after school and summer nutrition program with the addition of a Double

Stack Convection Oven and a Full Dice Cube Ice Machine. Currently we are serving about 14,000 meals and snacks per month.

Chevron- $25,500 to support the Learning Garden as part of the Healthy Habits Program and Positive Sprouts Curriculum at the Armstrong Youth Center.

Southern California Gas Company - $4,000 to purchase a

new natural gas passenger van to pick up low-income/ disadvantaged children from area elementary, junior high and high schools who are currently on the waiting list so that they can participate at the Club and $2,500 to the Power Hour: Making Minutes Count Program (homework and tutoring) at the Lamont Club.

AT&T Investing in California Award- $2,500 to support the Technology Lab and Robotics Program at the Armstrong Youth Center.
