Letter from The Board are now better trained to enter the work force. To say the jobs program is phenomenal is an understatement. The training provided by the Boys & Girls Club staff builds the foundation young people need to become great employees. This training is essentially a 10-week job interview.

I knew there was a Boys & Girls Clubs in Kern County. I knew the reputation of the Boys & Girls Clubs across the nation was one of great dedication to children.

Since 2013, PG&E and the Boys & Girls Clubs have provided training for nearly 1,000 youth and helped 168 youth secure summer jobs. That is 1,000 local young people who

The participants are required to attend, come dressed properly and show their commitment to the program. I have participated in the final panel interviews, and I was blown away by the professionalism of these young people. They easily interviewed better than most adults. The impact the job program has on these young people and the foundation built for their future is unmatched. My office had the pleasure of hosting interns for the past three years, and my staff and I are looking forward to hosting our fourth intern this summer. The Summer Jobs program brought me into the door of the Boys & Girls Club. The programs, the kids, and the people who are committed to these children to reach their full potential sparked my desire to continue to serve, give, and volunteer here. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County serves 8,000 children a day. Read that number againâ€Ś8,000 local children A DAY! It is my pleasure to serve on the Board of Directors, and I encourage you to help us empower these 8,000 children to reach their full potential in life.

PG&E Brightens Futures Thanks to a $217,724 grant from Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), the teens participated in a fun and educational game where they learned career building skills at our Boys & Girls Club – Armstrong Youth Center and our Suburu Club as part of the PG&E Summer Jobs Program. In partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County, the program is a stepping stone to the future for the young people involved. The ten-week “Career Launch” workforce training classes are providing the teens with job readiness, college preparation, and career exploration skills. During the “Game of Life” event on April 14th, the teens will participate in a fun and educational game where they learn about how making choices in the areas of housing, transportation, insurance, food, clothing, child care, entertainment and utilities, as well as with career and educational choices affect their budgets. Teens that successfully complete the “Career Launch” classes will be offered a chance to interview for one of 55 paid summer jobs with local businesses including PG&E and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County. The selected summer interns will open a bank account prior to starting their summer job and participate in the Money Matters curriculum. Work attire will be covered by the program grant along with transportation passes. Our Hometown-Hero, Kevin Harvick, once again changes the lives of many in the community.

Sport superstars Kevin Harvick and Cal Ripken, Jr. cut the ribbon to unveil the Kevin Harvick Foundation Park on March 16th, which will provide a clean and safe environment in which local youth can play, learn and grow at the Armstrong Youth Center. The Bakersfield facility marks the second collaboration between the two organizations, which commenced their alliance by opening the Kevin Harvick Founda-

tion Park in Greensboro, NC last November. “The Kevin Harvick Foundation once again is honored to partner with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation to provide an amazing facility for so many underserved children to develop physically and mentally,” Harvick said. “Sports played a pivotal role in my youth and development later in life, and I am looking forward to seeing these children derive the same benefits from

this facility, particularly the ones who wouldn’t otherwise have an opportunity to play and let loose in such a clean, safe atmosphere.” Following the ceremony, Harvick and Ripken christened the new Kevin Harvick Foundation Park by pitching to the Club members in attendance for a Quickball clinic - a fast-paced, easy-to-learn version of America’s favorite pastime. In addition, the gymnasium was renovated as part of the collaboration including a new floor, backboards, great paint job, skylights and scoreboard.

A. My favorite part of this particular project is proba-

bly the great field. I knew that the Ripken Foundation would do a good job with everything, but I think to see the renovation of the inside of the gym and to know that the roof doesn’t leak anymore is pretty nice.

Q. When you come to Bakersfield what is the first thing you always do?

A. Usually the first thing I do when I come back is stop at El Sombrero and eat dinner.

Getting To Know Kevin: Q. How does it feel to be able to make such a lasting impact in the lives of children in your hometown?

A. As you look at the facilities, and you see them

all done, and you see the smiles on the kids’ faces out there playing and having a good time, and you know they’re in a safe environment, it makes me feel really good!

Q. What advice do you have for our kids? A. I think the biggest advice I have is ‘Just chase your dream.’ There’s no reason why you can’t achieve what you’re looking to achieve. I was fortunate to be able to chase my dream and have a lot of people support me.

Q. What is your favorite part of the project at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County?

Building A Local Legacy favorite memories as a child during that time. Just like the B&G Club kids, I had mentors who invested their time and energy into teaching me about goals and responsibilities. I learned early on that being successful with anything requires setting a goal, dedication and hard work. Those are life skills that I still use today. In fact after I was asked to write this, it reminded me that I needed to set a goal for myself. I have a passion for cooking and sharing that with my children and grandchildren, just as my Grandpa Ed did with me. I had the opportunity to come and share with a class of children at the Club a while ago, and I would like to start doing that more regularly. I need to make a goal to add that to my calendar this year.

In 2012 I visited the Boys and Girls Club (B&G Club) and was very impressed with the program. The staff and volunteers are invaluable - watching them provide mentorship in a positive and goal orientated atmosphere was one of the primary reasons I decided to get involved. Seeing the children have the opportunity to learn about a variety of activities and the excitement of trying new things was a treat. The staff does an amazing job of teaching the value of setting goals and the accountability to achieve them. I was also impressed with their ability to include every child. There were no limitations here - EVERY child was there to participate and get involved. After my visit it gave me the opportunity to reflect back on my own childhood here in Bakersfield. I grew up in a home with a hard working single mother. She had to work to provide for me and my siblings. Thankfully I joined the Boy Scouts and made some of my

Another key consideration for supporting B&G Club was the value of the taking pride in Bakersfield and Kern County. As I mentioned, I grew up here in Bakersfield, and my wife Debbie and I raised our children here. We are now proud grandparents and watching our grandchildren grow up here as well.
