Our Board’s Perspective Board of Directors

A church tour on Niles Street was all it took.

An enthusiastic smile on the face of Executive Director Zane Smith and I was hooked.

I knew at that moment that I wanted to be a part of this great organization. The Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield (as it was known at that time) was an organization that supported the welfare of children in our community; an organization that provided a safety net for after-school (termed latch-key) children. An organization that made sure each child received educational enrichment services that allowed them a sense of belonging and an opportunity to excel. An organization that embodied success. The Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield (today known as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County) was that such organization. My first tour of the Club was in the early 1990s.

Today, I am very pleased to say that I am a part of that great organization having served on the Board of Directors since 2005.

I have seen many changes since that time.

The Club’s continued growth has been significant from serving 900 members daily in 2005 to over 7,200 members in 2017. Today the Club serves 62 after school sites. Youth that previously attended the Boys & Girls Clubs have become adults; some moving away only to return and become dedicated staff and mentors. Enrichment programs that encourage youth to achieve academic goals have expanded. The Club continues to grow and Club members continue to blossom.

However, there are two constants that remain the same. One is my company’s dedication to giving back to the community. California Resources Corporation (CRC), is committed to supporting local community groups and programs throughout the state that represent

California’s diversity. Being a pure-play oil and natural gas company means our entire workforce lives and works in the State of California and a core value of CRC is to support and give back to those communities where we live and work. Our employees are actively engaged and proud to serve in our respective communities. As a matter of fact, several CRC employees serve on the Boys & Girls Clubs Board of Directors in other areas of California.

The other constant is Zane Smith’s love for the Club and a caring and committed Board of Directors who share a passion to “enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens”.

I cannot neglect to say that my interest in the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County goes a little deeper than my Board involvement. It gets a little more personal for me. My two beautiful granddaughters, Kylei and Dominique, are members of the Stockdale Club. Since their enrollment in 2014, I have seen both girls flourish academically and socially. The staff knows each Club member by name (and there are a lot of names to remember), which makes my girl’s experience special to them.

Many evenings I find myself waiting while they finish just one more project, or run back inside because they have forgotten to hug one of the staff. Certainly worth the wait!

IF YOU DREAM IT, YOU CAN DO IT Celebrating Our Grants: March 1, 2017 to May 31, 2017.

Junior League of Bakersfield $4,500 to purchase items to support the Club’s Nutrition Program and the goal of “more meals for more children” which will include an industrial meat slicer and table, food processor with attachments plus an industrial can rack.

Women’s and Girl’s Fund, an initiative of the Kern Community Foundation - $15,000 to expand STEM programming at the Boys & Girls Club – Armstrong Youth Center for female Club members through a STEM Club for Girls.

Dollar General - $2,000 to underwrite the Summer Brain Gain: Read! Program will run from Monday, June 5, 2017 through August 10, 2017.

Bank of America - $10,000 to provide Financial Literacy for Young Adults at the Armstrong Youth Center and Lamont Club with the goal to prepare our teens as they begin their financial lives to handle their own personal finances, encourages pursuit of higher education, and prevent high school dropout.

crease their overall fitness through physical activity and improved nutrition education while learning the fundamental skills of baseball and softball through fun and enriching activities.

Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation - $7,500 to implement the Healthy Choices, Healthy Children (HCHC) character development along with Badges for Baseball after school and as part of the Summer Day Camps.

Walmart (Store #3140) - $1,000 to support the Learning Garden at the Boys & Girls Club - Armstrong Youth Center. The Learning Garden along with the Positive Sprouts Program, Great Garden Detective Curriculum and Healthy Habits empower at-risk and low-income youth to learn gardening, the preparation of healthy meals and educate them and their parents regarding nutrition, physical fitness and healthy choices.

The Bakersfield Californian $15,751 to implement Summer Brain Gain: Read! at the Boys & Girls Club - Armstrong Youth Center which will include Early Elementary, Upper Elementary and Middle School Units as part of the Summer Day Camp. The goal of the Summer Brain Gain: Read! Program is to mitigate summer learning loss for at least 100 under-served socioeconomic disadvantaged children and youth.

Ford Motor Fund - $10,000 to promote and acknowledge leadership, mentoring, school attendance and academic achievement for our middle school and junior high school Club members. The Ford Junior Youth of the Year Program

PG&E - $212,618 to provide work force skills to over 300 local teens as part of the PG&E Better Together Summer Jobs Program. The teens learn everything from how to build resumes and interviewing techniques to setting goals and improving communication skills.

After applying for and passing two rounds of interviews, 55 of those teens are selected to participate in a paid summer internship.

THE FUTURE STARTS NOW PG&E Summer Job Program Gives New Perspective On Life, Career Options for Our Youth

My name is Miguel Garcia and I was a part of the PG&E Better Together Summer Jobs Program a few years ago.

Going into the program I didn’t know what to expect, but I knew if I stayed committed, opportunities would come my way and doors would be opened for me. However, what I got was far greater; I made countless memories, made great friends, and learned many valuable life lessons.

the news director at KGET reached out to me and offered me a job as a video-editor for the very popular show “17 News at Sunrise”, making me the youngest employee in the newsroom.

After earning one of the 55 internships, I was placed at a local news station KGET-17. During the time I was there I met great people who were always willing to teach me and help me learn new things. Not only did I learn about how our local news worked, but I also learned many interesting facts about the beautiful city of Bakersfield.

I have now been a video-editor for KGET-17 for about a year and on occasion a photographer for events like Friday Night Football. Apart from being employed at KGET, I am also a full time college student aspiring to one day be a police officer. Thank you PG&E for underwriting the PG&E Better Together Summer Jobs Program and thank to all those employers who mentor a teen or two each summer.

One of the most valuable things that I obtained from the PG&E Better Together Summer Jobs Program was the mentoring I received, whether it was from the Boys and Girls Club staff, a reporter, or my boss at KGET. These people took me under their wing, and always believed in me.

As I moved forward and onto my senior year of high school, I kept in touch with both the staff at KGET and the Boys and Girls Club. Soon after I completed high school,
