PG&E Better Together Summer Jobs Program kicked off in March with over 400 teens and their parents attending the orientation.

Building on the success of the Better Together Summer Jobs Program last year which trained over 300 teens and put 55 youth to work during the summer, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County started providing job readiness training in early March 2017 (which will go through the middle of May) at two Club sites to over 400 teens. “The teens are learning everything from how to build re-

Southern California Edison - $5,000 to implement Project Learn at the Frazier Mountain Club. Project Learn consists of five components: 1) homework help and tutoring, 2) high-yield learning activities, 3) parental involvement, 4) collaboration with schools and 5) incentives.

Union Pacific Foundation - $10,000 to support the after-school enrichment and education program during the 2016-2017 school year at the Boys & Girls Club - Armstrong Youth Center.

Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) - $53,000 to underwrite the Boys &

Girls Clubs National Mentoring Program at three Club sites: Armstrong Youth Center, Lamont Club and Jefferson Elementary School.

Pacific Gas and Electric - $222,618 to provide work force training to local high school youth and put to work 55 teens during the summer.

Chevron - $20,000 for STEAM activities at the Armstrong Youth Center, Stockdale Club along with the Suburu Club through My.Future (pronounced My-Dot-Future) which includes, Robo Tech, Clay Tech, Game Tech, and the new Internet Essentials as well as DIY STEM.

Arts Council of Kern - $900 to support the Performing Arts Program – 2017 Summer Musical Production at the Boys & Girls Club - Armstrong Youth Center by underwriting the costumes as well as the props and backdrops.

Symantec - $5,000 to incorporate coding into the Armstrong Youth Center’s technology programming to include Hour of Code and CS First.

BGCA - $7,500 to provide Positive Club Climate professional development training to better equip staff to provide an Outcome-Driven Club Experience.

Because of this need for our youth, PG&E six years ago began a partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs in Fresno that expanded to include Bakersfield and Sacramento to provide teens with basic and pre-employment skills along with the opportunity to apply and compete for six-week paid summer jobs.

Employment opportunities last year were provided by 30 companies including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County, PG&E, Congressman

Kevin McCarthy, State Senator Andy Vidak and local nonprofit organizations such as H.E.A.R.T.S. Connection, American Red Cross-Kern Chapter, and The League of Dreams as well as local businesses including ACW Mufflers Tire & Wheels, Jim Burke Ford, and Oasis Air Conditioning. Once on the worksite, the trained, interviewed and selected teens assist employers with daily tasks, learn the basics of an entry level job, and gain valuable work experience.

Summer Camp Educates and Inspires

It’s Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead for Summer Learning in Kern County

Our theme for our summer day camp is “Soar into Fun!” We plan on making this happen and more for every child who walks through our Boys & Girls Club doors.

Through exciting and engaging activities facilitated by high energy well trained mentors, children will have a world-class experience in our fine art classes, robot building/ technology labs, innovative sports/ fitness programs, summer musicals, field trips and social bonding activities.

2017 is the year that new adventures begin as we challenge our staff to create our best summer experience yet! Our recording studio will be open for kids to write and produce their own songs. We have partnered with the Bakersfield Youth Fine Arts Academy to add three new musical productions to fully prepare our performers when they hit the stage to act, sing and dance for their family, friends and community. Our STEAM program will have new equipment and new

learning opportunities that will inspire our future scientists, engineers, and artists.

When we use the word “Fun” we look through the eyes of our children to ensure that every activity includes a sense of wonder, humor, silliness and excitement. Our team will seize precious moments to make sure that every child develops new skills, a strong circle of friends, and a sense of belonging.

Our summer day camp is designed to create a magical, high yield learning environment in which our children stretch their limits, build meaningful relationships and have the time of their young lives.
