LETTER FROM OUR LEADERS We all felt the challenges of 2020 acutely in our personal and professional lives. Though last year was overwhelmingly defined by the pandemic, it was also defined by new possibilities for our Club members. We were able to meet many of the needs of our Club families because of your generous support. Our staff worked inside our Clubs to connect virtually with members and make sure they understood and completed assignments. We partnered with local restaurants and banquet centers to pass out take-and-bake dinners for Club members each week. When the school year began, we worked closely with school districts to transform our Clubs into classrooms and provide in-club virtual learning assistance for Club kids enrolled in virtual learning. Like our Board, we are proud of the way our staff, organization and supporters collectively stepped up to be there for our members. We’re very proud of our 2020 accomplishments. Most notably: • We created a new department and position, VP of Social Responsibility and Impact, to develop a social enterprise and maximize organizational impact. • In February, Azariah Avery was named our Youth of the Year and went on to be named the Indiana State Youth of the Year. • In March, we began a $1.6 million renovation of our Hammond Club, which we successfully completed in August. • On June 19, we cut the ribbon on a new lounge at our Duneland Club thanks to the Caballero Foundation. • Over the summer, our Clubs honored our seniors with a graduation ceremony and introduction into the Alumni Association. • Near the end of 2020, our Board of Directors confirmed the creation of a standing IDEA committee to ensure the ideals of equity, diversity and inclusion permeate all levels of Boys & Girls Clubs. • Our Board of Directors approved a $9 million capital campaign to build a brand new Club in Valparaiso. • Finally, we ended 2020 with our annual Christmas to Remember program, which gave 312 Club members Christmas presents and their families a meal for a holiday they deserve. The challenges we faced and victories we achieved are both central to fulfilling our mission. We thank you so much for your commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana. Together, we helped our kids weather a tumultuous year, and we are excited about what the future holds for our kids, families, Clubs and communities. Sincerely,

HIGHLIGHTS State Youth of the Year
Azariah Avery, Merrillville Club, was named Indiana State Youth of the Year for 2020. For winning the title, Azariah received a $5,000 scholarship to any university, trade school, or career she chooses. “One night, I found myself organizing my letters of goodbye because I didn’t see a point in life anymore,” she said. “Then, I heard a ding. It was a text from my mentor Ms. Marquisha at the Boys & Girls Club. She just wanted to let me know she loved me and would be there for me no matter what. That was when I realized I had someone outside my family who loved me and saw my worth. I know now that I love myself and know my self-worth.”
Celebrating Seniors
After graduations across the Region were cancelled, we celebrated our seniors with a commencement ceremony at the Duneland Club. To give our seniors the recognition they deserve, local school principals read their names and presented them with graduation certificates as parents watched. Our graduates also recived swag bags and computers in honor of all their hard work.
Clubs Into Classrooms
We turned our Clubs into virtual learning classrooms to provide a safe place for kids to virtually attend class as their parents went back to work. Our Clubs were open during the school day, and we worked with local schools to keep members on academic track.
Hammond Club Renovation
After being approached by an anonymous donor with a lead gift of $500,000, we successfully completed a $1.6 million renovation of Hammond Boys & Girls Club over the spring and summer. The new, cutting-edge Club now consists of a rock-climbing wall, digital music recording studio, STEM lab, arts room, full-size gym and teen space, which has a dedicated entrance that separates teens and younger Club members.
Club Members Build Golf Courses
In lieu of our traditional annual golf outing, Clubs created a Golf in a Box, a fun twist that allowed golfers to receive the full golf experience in one convenient package. As part of the event, members from three Clubs utilized their STEM skills to construct playable nine-hole miniature golf courses. Club members from John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Club developed a course that challenged golfers’ geometry skills. Duneland Club members created a Club-themed course, with the design of each hole inspired by a room at Club. And Portage Club members designed their course to explain STEM concepts like Newton’s First Law of Motion and gravity.
