2023
ANNUAL REPORT
Artwork by Londonniece, age 11. South Haven Club

Welcome to Our Clubs

Our 2023 year was focused on building great futures for our next generation of leaders. From educational field trips to college tours, our tweens and teens took on the Region and beyond this year. Not only did a group of our teens win a workforce development award, but they were able to travel to Washington D.C. to accept it. For some of these teens, this was their first trip on a plane.

Our Clubs are here to give opportunities that go beyond what our members can dream. A few of our successes this year include:

• 25 employer tours including, Hammond Machine Works, Jockey Headquarters, Goodwill, Chick-Fil-A, Centier Bank and more.

• $13,750 in college scholarships given to our Youth of the Year candidates. $5,000 to first place, $2,500 to second place and $1,250 to runner-ups thanks to Horizon Bank.

• 6 members attended the National Advocacy and STEM Summit in Washington D.C.

• Started a monthly radio show on WLTH where members run the show.

• Hosted a Geek Squad Academy for our members to learn all about tech. Best Buy employees partnered with the Clubs to show members the types careers in tech.

• Partnered with the Penguin Project and Memorial Opera House to host a fully-inclusive theatre production designed specifically for children with disabilities.

• Built a first-of-its-kind sensory room in our Portage Club to allow a safe and comfortable place for children of all needs, thanks to an anonymous donor.

• Partnered with Boeing to offer a STEM education event for our Gary Club members.

• Employee, Jon Young, was named National Trainer of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

• Broke ground on a $5.5 million renovation of the South Haven Club.

As we look ahead to 2024 and what it will bring, we strive to continue to prepare and excite our members about their futures. We are grateful to those who have helped us in the past and look forward to continue working with those who will be our 2024 champions.

Building Great Futures

First Merchants Bank helped members learn about different savings accounts and tips for saving. Hammond teens visited Hammond Machine Works to learn about metal fabrication. Teens were able to participate in the Taco Bell work-based learning program. Members learned the importance of voting by “taking to the polls” and voting Oreo or chocolate chip cookies. Centier Bank taught members how to write checks and balance a checkbook. East Chicago members visited Purdue Northwest to see a college campus and tour classrooms. Valparaiso members were able to tour Valparaiso University and see what a dorm room is like. Teens at the Gary Club were able to take a braiding class from Shear Creations.

STEM. Arts. Health.

Online Parent Portal

We are excited to have our new online system up and running! Parents can now register for memberships, sign up for leagues and other programs all online.

Through the My ClubHub Parent Portal, built specifically for Boys & Girls Clubs, we can offer a streamlined service for our parents. Boys & Girls Clubs of America partnered with Salesforce to develop the base of the program and we are able to tailor it to our needs.

With our new system we’ve created ease for parents and consolidated back end work for our staff. To check out and learn more about our Parent Portal, visit bgcgreaternwi.org/parent-portal.

A Day of Advocacy in Washington D.C.

Teens from the John Will Anderson Gary Club were part of the Center of Transformation program. The ten-week global climate change curriculum is designed to help Club youth learn about advocacy and global climate change.

Our group of teens were selected to attend the National Advocacy and STEM Summit in Washington D.C. as part of the program. During their trip to the Capitol, they were immersed in the democratic process of advocating for a better future.

They met with policy makers and attended live sessions of Congress, took field trips to NASA and the Boeing Company to experience flight simulators and fly drones, attended round table discussions with entrepreneurs and environmental justice experts, and had networking opportunities with professionals and fellow Club members from around the United States.

Their work during the program was awarded the Workforce Development Award. The award recognizes a team of advocates who have contributed to the development of workforce skills, such as entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and career readiness, and have helped create opportunities for others.

Developing Animal Prosthetic Leg

As a partnership with IUN for Kids@College, two of our teens, Jahlil and Jamal, developed a prosthetic leg for a dog. Pictured to the left is the dog being fit for the leg they developed.

Our New South Haven Club

A neighborhood with a Valparaiso address, served by county utilities and Portage schools, South Haven is a small community with a unique identity. South Haven Boys & Girls Club sits as its cornerstone. Located on Long Run Road, within walking distance of South Haven Elementary and less than a mile from Paul Saylor Elementary, it’s an essential safe haven for kids and parents.

Since 1982, the Club has served as the go-to spot for kids. But 40 years have come and gone, and the needs of kids have changed. We began renovations to our South Haven Club in the summer of 2023 with the intent to open to members at the start of school in August of 2024.

The renovated Club will feature a dedicated teen space, two large gamesrooms, a secured parent vestibule, additional storage space, art room, lounge, STEM room and education rooms.

We are excited to give South Haven Club members and the neighborhood the Club they have long deserved.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think the Club would impact me the way it did, and where my life would take me.”
-Lieutenant Colonel Jake England, US Army South Haven Club Alum
