2022 Was A Blast Annual Report

“
Your generosity has helped to provide hope and opportunity for so many young people, and we are truly grateful. ”

“
Your generosity has helped to provide hope and opportunity for so many young people, and we are truly grateful. ”
Throughout the past year, we have been able to provide a safe and positive environment for over 5,000 youth in Northwest Indiana. This year’s focus has been on recovery; steadily regaining traction following the effect of the pandemic on our programming and attendance rates. With that being said, 2022 was a big year for our organization and the youth we serve.
We’re very proud of our 2022 accomplishments. Most notably:
• In February we hired Ellis Dumas III as the Vice President of Program Quality and Outcomes. His newly created department was designed to improve the Club experience for our kids, ensuring a welcoming environment for all of our youth.
• Created a new position, Director(s) of Social Emotional Wellness, to offer our youth access to critical social and emotional learning, as well as beneficial social services. We immediately hired two experienced social workers for this role, allowing them to shape the program for years to come.
• In April, our local Youth of the Year, Jamie Cruz, won the Indiana State Youth of the Year award. It was our fourth state win in a row, with many more to come from our bright youth.
• Partnered with Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation earlier this year to bolster athletic and leadership programs at our John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Club.
• Finalized and opened our new Valparaiso Boys & Girls Club, which has since seen massive gains in membership totals and average daily attendance.
• Hosted our annual Coming Together Conference, where more than two hundred staff were able to collaborate ideas and celebrate their Club successes under the same roof. Our focus was on diversity, equity, and inclusion training, staff development, and team building.
• Announced our South Haven Boys & Girls Club renovation project - thanks in part to funding from Porter County American Rescue Plan Act.
• Announced a massive collaborative effort between Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, Crossroads YMCA, Methodist Hospitals, the City of Gary and Dean and Barbara White Foundation to renovate and expand the Tolleston area in Gary, IN.
• Finally, we ended our year with our biggest Christmas to Remember event yet, providing a record 500 youth with meaningful gifts for the holidays.
The challenges we face as an organization are part of our mission, embedded in the core of our approach to philanthropy – as are the sweet triumphs and victories we achieve for our youth. Ultimately, none of this great work would be possible without the massive collaborative effort of funding partners like yourself. We would like to thank you for your continued support in helping to make a difference in the lives of kids all across the community. Your generosity has helped to provide hope and opportunity for so many young people, and we are truly grateful.
Matt Glaros Board ChairTo inspire and enable the youth of our communities to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens.
To be the best youth development organization in our communities perpetually committed to a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana’s Board of Directors and employees believe all people are created equally. We are perpetually committed to a culture that embraces & promotes racial equity and inclusion.
We promote a place where everyone is free from bias, prejudice and discrimination. We respect each person and value every voice. We have zero tolerance for discrimination in any form.
We provide an inclusive environment for a diverse group of employees, volunteers, donors and Club members, where opportunities and equal access are demonstrated at all levels.
Together, as youth allies and advocates, we pledge to create more diverse, equitable and inclusive communities across Greater Northwest Indiana.
In 2019, Sanja Kirova was named our organization’s Youth of the Year and went on to win Indiana State Youth of the Year. Growing up in the Portage Boys & Girls Club, she attributes much of her success to her time there.
“I would definitely attribute the Club to all of my successes now! It was a great place to grow up, learn essential skills, develop a resilient character, and be in a place where I felt I belonged. When I first joined the Club as a 3rd grader, I couldn’t speak English. Through tutors and homework problems, I began to excel academically. Not only was the Club foundationally important to me as a kid, but even during high school, the Club helped me practice public speaking and interviewing (or even shaking hands), learn how to manage my own finances, and understand how college works and why it’s beneficial.”
After high school, Sanja continues to have success at Columbia University where she is studying mechanical engineering. She has joined many extra curricular clubs like Robotics and Formula SAE while continuing work with nonprofit organizations, She Can Tech and STEMchats.
In 2020, She Can Tech was a T-Mobile Changemakers Challenge winner through BGCA. Through this, she was able to travel to a conference in Seattle, Washington and host workshops locally throughout the year. Sanja has had several internships and work experiences in the science fields.
“During the summer after my freshman year, I interned at Seafair, a startup from Columbia that works to make hiring within the maritime industry fair. My sophomore year was virtual, but I took leadership positions in the clubs I was a part of and I led the Robotics team that won a $25k award as runner-ups in the NASA Break the Ice Lunar Challenge. During the summer after my sophomore year, I worked in the Creative Machines Lab on campus as a Research Assistant and was an iD Tech virtual computer science instructor. This past summer, I was a Summer Research Program Intern at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, so I worked in Boston and got to apply all that I have been learning.”
Sanja is currently the Vice President of Technical Operations of Columbia’s Formula SAE Club and is working with the team on building their first electric vehicle!
“Thanks to programs like Torch Club and Keystone at the Boys & Girls Club, I felt competent and confident enough to run for leadership positions throughout my time at Columbia, and I knew what it took to be a good leader and team player too. The STEM and Digital Arts programs at the Club were also what inspired me to pursue mechanical engineering, and for that I am grateful because I have found a field I am very passionate about.”

The new Valparaiso Club, moving from it’s historic building on Jefferson Street, now sits at 708 Evans Avenue. Featuring two full-sized gyms, a dedicated Teen Center, state-of-the-art STEM Lab, dance studio, art room, rock climbing wall, digital recording studio and exergamming studio, the Club allows members to follow any passion while having fun with their friends.
Sitting on 8.24 acres and across from the Fairgrounds Park gives ample opportunity for kids to get outside a play in the warmer months. Teens have enjoyed walking the fairgrounds track with their friends while the younger members enjoy the playground.
Community members are able to rent the facility, including the conference room at the entrance of the building. From team building to birthday parties, the Club is ready to support the Valparaiso Community needs.
I started attending the Valpo Club back in 1986 when I was 7 years old. I remember quickly bonding with staff. I have fond memories of overnighters, creating masterpieces in the Art Room, learning how to saw in the Wood Shop, playing computer games in the Learning Center, going on trips to Chicago and camping with Torch Club at Camp Crosley. I was even part of a short-lived Boys & Girls Club cheerleading team and have the video of us performing as California Raisins to prove it! Some of my best childhood friends were made at the Club.
The Club was my after school home for 7 years, and helped me develop leadership skills and interact with kids I would have never typically met because they went to other schools and didn't live near me. The staff mentored me to the point where I eventually wanted to become one of them! I am so grateful for my time at the Valpo Club and am thrilled they'll have a new space to continue their growth and service to the Valparaiso community.

In the near future we will start planning a renovation for our South Haven Club. Plans are underway but in the preliminary rounds. Stay tuned for more information on our South Haven Club renovation.
We are excited to be recipients of the Eli Lilly Foundation grant. With this grant comes measures to increase our daily attendance, membership rates and revenue. This grant will allow us to run new and exciting programs for the youth of our communities.
The Tolleston Opportunity Campus is a $30 million investment on the property of our JWA Gary Club located at 2700 W. 19th Avenue. It brings together the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana, Crossroads YMCA, Methodist Hospitals, the City of Gary and the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation.
The Campus establishes a community gathering space to engage and connect residents and service organizations aiming to improve quality of life. The partners’ collective goal is to deliver exceptional spaces and programs that focus on education, social services, childcare, health/wellness, physical activity, talent development, entrepreneurship and economic advancement. Together, with input from residents, the Campus can be designed to meet the specific needs of the neighborhood.
Seed funding for this project comes from a Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative grant (READI), the City of Gary and the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation.
After nearly two years of planning and development, the Best Buy Teen Tech Center® at the John Will Anderson Gary Boys & Girls Club is officially open. In collaboration with the Best Buy Foundation and support from The Damien and Katy Harmon Foundation, the center will improve tech equity through access, training, and mentorship for young people in the community.
Best Buy Teen Tech Centers are safe, after-school spaces where students have access to the latest technology and can develop critical skills through hands-on activities.
The center in Gary offers local teens access to state-of-the-art equipment and opportunities to explore their interests in areas like programming, film-making, music production and design.
The Teen Tech Center includes a full recording studio for music and podcasting, professional cameras and video editing software, a green screen, embroidery/sewing machines, among other technology.
Currently, there are 50 Best Buy Teen Tech Centers, with this being the second in Indiana.
Damien Harmon, Executive Vice President of Omnichannel at Best Buy, and his wife Katy, were major sponsors for the Teen Tech Center through their foundation. As a Gary Boys & Girls Club alumnus, his connection to the community was a driving factor in bringing the Teen Tech Center in Gary to life.
“Gary holds such a special place in my heart, and it’s important to me that teens in the community can dream big dreams, be inspired and get the support they need to build a bright future,” Harmon said. “I am so proud to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs to build this new Teen Tech Center that will allow Gary youth to chase their dreams.”

Ready to make an impact? There are many ways to get involved with our Clubs and help build the next generation of leaders.
Contact volunteer@bgcgreaternwi.org to volunteer in any capacity at our Clubs. We can’t wait to work with you!
Event Volunteers
Golf Outing: Held in July every year, we use volunteers on the course to help run fundraising games that support our mission.
Christmas to Remember: One of our most impactful events, we bring over 500 kids to one location to meet Santa, open gifts, enjoy dinner and have a holiday they will never forget. Each child opens their presents that were hand-selected from a Dear Santa letter they wrote. We need volunteers to help shop, wrap and plan the event, along with the night of the event and spending time with the kids.
Club Volunteers
Share Your Passion: If you have a passion that you want to share with you, our kids are eager to learn! From crafting to cooking to wood work, you can lead a session or two and get young minds engaged in the hobbies you enjoy!
Coaches: We are always looking for volunteer coaches for our leagues.
Corporate Volunteers
Ready to volunteer as a group? Whether you help pull weeds or do a project with kids, we’re ready for your company or organization to volunteer!
PALS - Professionals Advancing Local Success is our young professionals group that supports the mission of our Clubs.
We are recruiting for any young, talented professionals who are ready to volunteer with a fun and creative group. Our PALS group hosts one fundraiser a year as well as mentors our Youth of the Year candidates.
Know someone who would be a good fit? Visit bgcgreaternwi.org/pals to learn more.
