The Club opens when the schools release and follow regular evening hours.

*Schedule subject to change without notice* The Club reserves the right to change its hours and days of operation based on need. If such changes occur, parents/guardians will be notified in advance via email and postings on the BGCG website and social media networks.

Additionally, there may be days when it is necessary to close the Club due to unforeseen circumstances such as emergency repairs, inclement weather, etc.

Again, when such instances arise, we will do our best to post this information as early as possible so as to mitigate any inconvenience this may cause.

Please be sure to pick up your child by the posted closing times. BGCG reserves the right to contact the appropriate authorities for assistance when members are not picked up by a reasonable time AND after all emergency contact alternatives have been exhausted.

KHAN ACADEMY

Grades 1-12 | Location: Computer Lab | Limited to 10 participants Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps.

MATH MINDS

Grades 3-6 | Location: Education Floor | Limited to 8 Participants This program will provide tutoring assistance to members in grades 3 through 6 with Math reinforcement. Each participant will receive individualized help. Reinforcement help will follow the GPS curriculum. A computer-based math program will be used as well.

MONEY MATTERS

Grades 9-12 The Money Matters program was created by Boys & Girls Club of America, in partnership with Charles Schwab Foundation, to provide behavior-changing financial education to help teens get on the path toward budgeting, saving, planning for college and financial freedom.

POWER HOUR

Grades 1-8 | Location: Learning Center Power Hour provides one-on-one, volunteer-based tutoring for members in need of academic support. Parents must sign a contract and supply the necessary forms and information needed for tutors to contact the school regarding their child’s academic progress. *Program continues throughout the year on a seasonal schedule.

Aquatics ADULT LEARN-TO-SWIM

Limited to one adult per instructor | Fee: $270 Parents and guardians of BGCG Club members have the opportunity to learn how to swim. This 9-week course will teach adults how to swim, learn basic water safety knowledge, and help them develop skills to become active swimmers.

ADVANCED STROKE CLINIC

Clinics will help swimmers build endurance and refine strokes. No competition involved.

Swimmers MUST have knowledge of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, and will have to demonstrate two laps of each consecutively. This is not a regular swim lesson. Swimmers must attend at least 2 clinics a week.

AFTER-SCHOOL SWIM LESSONS

All grades | Location: Pool | Unlimited Registration All BGCG members have the opportunity to have a 30-minute swim lesson once a week; choose only one day from the schedule. Every child will be evaluated on the first day of lessons and will be divided into groups according to his/her swimming ability.

Lessons will vary from “learn to swim” to “stroke technique.” Members who miss more than two consecutive lessons will be removed from the swim lesson schedule.

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION COURSE

Grades 10-12 | Limited to 12 participants | Fee: $250 This 9-week course prepares lifeguards-in-training with the skills and knowledge to become a certified American Red Cross lifeguard. Certification will only be issued after a successful completion of the course. Participants must be 15 years of age. Prerequisites: Swim 12 laps/brick retreival (1:30/tread water 2:00 minutes).

MOMMY & ME Calling All Club Member Families

Limited to 6 participants per class | Fee: $270 This 9-week course introduces infants and toddlers to the water through exploration and play. This class is a great opportunity to get out of the house, interact with other moms and encourage children to enjoy the water at a young age.

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS

Limited to 8 participants per class | Fee: $240 This 8-week course introduces children from ages 3-5 years old how to swim.

BUILD IT

Grades 4-8 | Location: Learning Center In this class, participants will learn the vocabulary of building, mathematical concepts, design, symmetry, scale, proportion and composition in a tangible and stimulating way.

Through the use of clay, Legos and other objects, designs will be built in a personal way that reflects and empowers them as individuals.

JUNIOR CHEFS

Grades 3-5 | Location: Kitchen | Limited to 8 participants Participants will learn mixing and measuring techniques, kitchen etiquette and the proper way to use kitchen tools to prepare ingredients for cooking. This hands-on class will introduce participants to the pleasures of cooking.

KIDS CODING

Grades 3-6 | Location: Computer Lab | Limited to 10 participants This multimedia adventure is perfect for aspiring coders. Students create animated stories and games while learning programming concepts such as SCRATCH. This drag and drop platform developed by MIT allows participants to play with sprites and blocks to set a foundation of computational thinking – an essential skill in today’s tech-driven world.

INTRO TO TENNIS

Grades 6 and higher| Location: Members will be transported to and from town tennis facility This program introduces the game of tennis to beginners. The main goal is to get our members accustomed to regulation size courts and give them a basic understanding of how to play the game. Beginning with instructional exercises with foam “learn to play balls” and leading up to an entry level of competitive play amongst each other.

STEP IT UP!

Grades 4-12 | Location: Learning Center In this class participants will learn how to Step. A form of percussive dance in which the entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps and hand claps. Dance, Tap, March and Afro-Caribbean dance elements will be incorporated to produce routines.

Come learn how to set goals, find jobs that fit your interests and learn how to market yourself to the fullest.

JUNIOR STAFF PROGRAM

Grades 7-9 | Location: Teen Room The Junior Staff Program offers great leadership training and is designed to give members a chance to work within the Boys & Girls Club walls. Members talk about personal, academic and life goals. The Junior Staff members are assigned specific duties to help and support Boys & Girls Club members as well as the staff. The BGCG Teen Coordinator oversees the Junior Staff Program.

KEYSTONE CLUB

Grades 9-12 Keystone Club is the Boys & Girls Club Movement’s most dynamic teen program. Keystone Clubs are chartered leadership and service clubs for boys and girls in grades 9-12 designed to develop good character and help members grow to become productive, responsible adults. Keystone Teens elect officers and implement their own service projects in three core areas: Character and Leadership, Service to the Club and Community, and Education & Career Exploration. Keystone Clubs are designed to help teen members become more productive citizens and leaders. Each year, the Greenwich Cardinal Keystone club participates in a national project resulting in a service project with national scope.

PASSPORT TO MANHOOD

Boys Grades 6-8 Passport to Manhood promotes and teaches responsibility in middle school-age boys.

Passport to Manhood gives young men a chance to express themselves in discussions and activities that reinforce positive behavior in a small group environment.

SMART GIRLS

Grades 4-8 | Location: 2nd Floor

Smart Girls is a small group program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls.

Each girl will be equipped with critical knowledge and skills in physical health, wellness, mental health and self-esteem and healthy relationships. Girls will explore their individual and societal attitudes and values as they build healthy attitudes and lifestyles.

SMART MOVES

Grades 7-9 | Location: Teen Room Smart Moves is a National Boys & Girls Club program designed to provide members with the knowledge, skills and self-esteem to help them avoid risky behaviors and situations.

Through increased knowledge and awareness, the purpose of the program is to prevent the onset of alcohol, other drug use and early sexual involvement by young people.

TORCH CLUB

Grades 5-8 The Torch Club is a chartered leadership group for middle school-age boys and girls.

This national awarding winning group elects officers and works together to plan and implement activities based on service to the Club/Community, health and fitness, education and social recreation.

MEMBERSHIP Membership provides access to the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich’s After-School Program throughout the academic season. The After-School Program is also open on most Greenwich Public School holidays and during winter and spring vacation weeks.

Membership also provides access to the Evening Programs outlined in this guide.

Membership is open to all youth between the ages of 6 and 18 who live in Greenwich; who have a parent or guardian who works in Greenwich; or who attend an independent school in Greenwich. A membership form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian each calendar year (even if you are simply renewing your membership).

The Club’s annual membership fee is $75 per child for residents and $175 per child for non– residents with a parent or guardian working in Greenwich or for non-residents attending an independent school in Greenwich. Fees will not be pro-rated for partial year memberships.

Memberships must be renewed in January of each calendar year. Additional fees are charged for the Club’s summer camp programs, swim team and for certain field trips.

Please note that checks returned from the bank will incur a $20 returned check fee.

Membership fee and returned check fee must be repaid with a money order, certified bank check, credit card or cash.

The information you provide us on the membership application is critical. We ask that every effort be made to present contact information that is both current and accurate.

It is the parent or guardian’s responsibility to notify us of any changes to your telephone numbers (home, work, emergency contacts, etc.), email addresses and/or street address information as soon as such changes occur.

Membership is a privilege. Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich reserves the right to refuse membership to any child at any time, with or without cause.

Please note that the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich also offers memberships for Junior Swimming Friends. These programs are not included in this program guide or the basic Club membership. For further information on these opportunities, please call the main office or visit BGCG.ORG.

GENERAL INFORMATION Accidents

BGCG strives to maintain a safe and secure environment. There is an assumed risk in many of our core programs including, but not limited to, sports. Please feel safe in knowing that our trained staff members are attentive to providing the safest environment possible. The completed membership application authorizes the Club staff to seek medical treatment for a member, if necessary. In the event of a serious injury the staff will call 911 immediately and then call the parents/guardians or alternative emergency contacts. This is one more reason why updated contact information is your responsibility and crucial to your child’s well-being.

Behavior Policy & Member Expectations

The Boys & Girls Club is committed to providing the best Club experience for all members. We strive to create a positive Club environment, to foster member development and promote positive interaction among our members, staff and volunteers. We believe that all persons involved in our Club have the right to a safe, respectful and productive environment. We believe that this type of quality climate requires high expectations, positive behavioral guidelines and fair discipline policies and procedures. In an effort to maintain this environment, we teach and practice the following Club expectations and discipline policy to allow all members and parents/guardians to have a clear understanding of the Club’s standards and expectations.

Code of Conduct

The Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich is committed to providing a safe place for children and youth. Aggressive, hostile and other dangerous behavior is not tolerated. No one shall threaten the safety of another person. We are a tobaccofree environment and use of tobacco products is prohibited on Club property or at Club-sponsored events. Substance abuse, which includes the possession, use or sale of illegal drugs or the unlawful use of lawful substances including alcohol and prescription drugs will not be tolerated on Club premises or at any Club-sponsored or Club-related functions.

Parents must treat Club staff, volunteers, members and other parents with respect.

Please remember that children learn best by example and it is critical that parents and staff work together to provide the most positive experience possible for children enrolled in BGCG programs.

BGCG reserves the right to dismiss a family at any time we deem necessary.

Reasons for dismissal include, without limitation, the following: excessive disruptive or dangerous behavior by the child or parent, excessive and continuing injuring of other children, adults or property; any other inappropriate conduct, to be determined at our discretion.

Discipline Policy & Procedures

The Club maintains an escalating policy of discipline with final decisions resting with the Chief Executive Officer. Breaches of Club rules and expectations are considered serious and can ultimately result in suspension or termination of membership. Following steps that may be taken: • Verbal warning with possible removal from activity.

• Removal from activity and meeting with Vice President of Programs and a phone call to parent/guardian.

• Formal meeting with member, parent/guardian and Vice President of Programs.

Entering the Club

• You MUST scan your membership card in and out at the Front Desk every day. If you do not have a card and are a current member, please sign in with the staff at the Front Desk. Replacement cards are $5.

• For the safety of our members, all parents, guardians and visitors must check in at the Front Desk upon entry.

• Parents are only allowed on the main floor of the Club. No parents are allowed beyond the first floor.

Food

BGCG understands and appreciates the need for a healthy diet among all of our members. It is our goal to encourage healthy eating habits that promote the well-being of our youth. Additionally, the Club has a designated area for eating.

On weekdays, the Club provides a healthy snack in the afternoon thanks to private contributions and a grant from the State of Connecticut’s Child and Adult Food Care Program. Members are welcome to bring their own healthy snacks and drinks (please note that refrigerators and microwaves are NOT available).

Water fountains are available in all areas of the Club.

Inclement Weather Policy

When the Greenwich Public Schools are CLOSED or have an early dismissal due to inclement weather, the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich will also be CLOSED. In addition, if public schools cancel their after school activities, BGCG activities will be also CANCELED and will not accept kids after school.

Late Pick-Up Policy

For every 15 minutes that you are late to pick-up your child, you will be required to pay $10.00. Payment must be made before your child will be allowed back into the Club. If you do not pay, your child will not be allowed back into the After-School Program until your late fee is paid.

Medication

BGCG does not dispense, store and/or oversee medication of any kind, including all non-prescription medications, sunscreens and lotions. We will hold medication upon parents’ request.

Membership Cards

ONE membership card will be provided to each new or renewal member when all application requirements have been met. Members should bring their card to the Club EVERY DAY. Club members are required to scan in and out each day upon entering and departing the Club. If a member does NOT have his or her card, certain privileges to program offerings may be denied. If a Club card is lost, a replacement fee of $5 will be charged.

Open Door Policy

BGCG has an OPEN DOOR POLICY. This policy allows members to come and go at any time during the Club’s operating hours. Members are encouraged to sign out and staff members, under normal circumstances, are not allowed to prohibit a member from leaving the facility. Thus, it is the responsibility of the child AND the parent/guardian to determine, understand and enforce whatever arrival and departure methods they see fit. Please note that youth are not allowed on the Club’s grounds during operating hours unless they are signed in and participating in Club activities. Members should NOT be dropped off prior to the opening of the Club, as the Club cannot be held responsible for the supervision of such youth.

It is important to remember that BGCG is NOT A DAYCARE CENTER and is not governed by licensure as a childcare facility during the school year.

Personal Belongings

BGCG is not responsible for any personal belongings that are lost or stolen at the Club. Necessary items, such as backpacks and jackets, should be clearly marked with the member’s name. Items that are not collected from our lost-and-found area in a timely fashion will be donated to a local charity. Please encourage your children not to bring any valuables to the Club including, but not limited to, cell phones, PlayStations, Pokémon cards or other electronic devices.

Phone Calls

Our phones are for Club business only. Members should ask permission to use phones or receive calls in emergencies only. Our lines need to remain open in the event of an emergency. Please make any necessary arrangements before your child comes to the Club so that you do not have to call the Club and your child does not have to call you.

Supervision

Our staff are trained Youth Development Professionals. A full-time staff member and/or part-time staff oversees each of our designated program areas. Many of our activity areas are also supplemented with volunteers. Please take the time to remind your child of the need to follow Club rules and directions AT ALL TIMES whether directions are given by a full-time staff member or a part-time staff member. All BGCG employees are mandated reporters and are required to report suspected child abuse or maltreatment – or cause a report to be made – when, in their professional roles, they are presented with reasonable cause to suspect abuse or maltreatment.

Transportation

Transportation is available from most schools in the Greenwich School District to the Club. Please check with your individual school for information.

Trips

BGCG provides a variety of opportunities for our members to participate in activities off Club property that support our core beliefs and programs. Each excursion requires a signed permission slip and any necessary fees prior to departing. Most sign-ups are taken on a first-come, first-served basis (meaning eligible members who return the required permission slip). Members and parents are reminded that all of our Club rules extend to field trips. Members who fail to follow our rules and general Club expectations for appropriate behavior will prompt an immediate call to a parent or guardian to remove that member from the field trip at their own cost.

A parent or guardian MUST be available by telephone at all times during any Club sponsored field trip in the event that the staff needs to contact you.

GET INVOLVED Donations

The annual cost to provide the array of programming that we offer to our 1,650 members equals $2,350 per child. To remain affordable and accessible to all, we must rely on the generosity of donors such as yourself to support our day-to-day cost of program delivery. Your gift to the Club will make a difference in the youth we serve. We appreciate your generosity. Donations can be made one of three ways: material donations are accepted as needed, please call the Club to arrange; cash or check donations may be mailed directly to the Club to the attention of the Development Office; stock transfers are also accepted and can easily be processed; please visit our website – www.bgcg.org – for instructions.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are critical to the success of accomplishing our mission and can serve as role models to our youth. BGCG values the time and contributions of our volunteers and is committed to providing the environment and support to help them succeed. We need dedicated, caring individuals age 16 and over who are eager to help make a difference in the lives of our children. Volunteer opportunities range from tutoring to assisting with sports and aquatic activities or doing behindthe-scenes work with our administrative staff. HISTORY OF THE CLUB

The first Boys Club had its beginnings in 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut in response to several women who believed that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative. In 1908, a group of dedicated Greenwich residents founded the Greenwich Boys Club in order to help young boys from disadvantaged circumstances develop good character, primarily through athletic and recreational programs. Earliest records indicate that the group met in a storefront on the Post Road and in 1920 moved to Railroad Avenue in a building across from the current Greenwich Train Station. The Club’s rapid growth in membership and desire to serve boys’ needs attracted the benevolence and generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Wiggin, who donated $250,000 to acquire land and build the historic Georgian style Clubhouse situated on Horseneck Lane.

In 2003, the Club embarked on a Capital Campaign in an effort to raise $15M for a much needed renovation to the facility. The Campaign was a great success, surpassing the original goal. The renovation, which was designed to provide the community with a state-of-the-art youth facility, was completed in 2005.

The Greenwich Club is one of 4,000 Clubs across the United States, Canada and Europe, and is affiliated with National Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Currently in Connecticut there are 16 independently operated Boys & Girls Clubs. To learn more about BGCA, please visit www.bgca.org.
