CAPTURING YOUR IDEAL ESCAPE WITHIN
Keep your plants healthy
while on holiday
You’re on holiday, enjoying the sights, sounds and flavours of a new or favourite destination. But, with so much to experience, the last thing you want to worry about is whether your beloved houseplants are staying happy and healthy.
Here are five tips from Link Residential Group to keep your plants healthy while you take a much-needed break!
Call in a friend
We call upon friends to pet and house sit and it's no different for our green-leaved companions. Call your green-thumbed friends and ask to walk them through your plant care before you head off. As thanks, give them a cutting or two of their favourite plants or bring them back a little gift.
Relocate your plants
Avoid your plants wilting by distancing them from their usual light source – the more light your plant gets, the more water it needs! Fill your bath or sink with your humidity-loving plants and 1cm of water. Group them together for combined humidity to keep them happy until you're back and can move them back to their original homes.
DIY a self-watering system
Fill any vase or glass with water and cut a piece of rope long enough to travel from the bottom of the vase into the soil, about 10cm below the surface. Your plant will pull the water it needs through the rope, keeping the soil moist and watering itself while you’re away!
Hold off on fertiliser
Fertiliser is food for your plants. It keeps them happy and helps them grow! However, growing plants need more water. Hold off on fertilising your plants in the weeks before your getaway to slow down their growth and reduce their water needs while you’re away.
Give your plants a trim
You put a lot of energy into keeping your plants looking healthy. In the same way, your plant puts energy into trying to repair its dying foliage. Trim off any dead and dull leaves and flowers before you head off on holiday to help your plants maintain their healthy condition with less water.
