Bach Festival Society of Winter Park Presents

Messe de Requiem (1874)

VERDI’S REQUIEM

GIUSEPPE VERDI

A Requiem is a mass for the dead, and death was no stranger to Giuseppe Verdi. In 1836, the 23-year-old composer married his student Margherita Barezzi, and soon the couple welcomed two children - daughter Virginia and son Icilio. His career was also beginning to blossom and following the modest success of his first opera, Oberto, he received a commission to compose a trio of comic operas for the impresario of La Scala in Milan. The first of these, Un giorno di regno, was poorly received, perhaps due to his inability to find much humor in his own life. As he began work on these operas, his entire family began to slip away as his children succumbed to influenza in 1838 and 1839, and his beloved wife followed within a year after contracting encephalitis. Convinced he could not complete the trilogy, he vowed to cease composing entirely.

In his efforts to support the cause of Italian unification, Verdi became close friends with poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, to whom this Requiem would be dedicated. Manzoni’s 1827 novel The Betrothed entertained themes of political and religious corruption and became one of the most famous novels in the Italian language. Verdi himself described the novel, calling it, “not only the greatest book of our epoch, but one of the greatest ever to emerge from a human brain.” The composer wrote to a friend of his first meeting with the writer, “What could I say to you of Manzoni? How to explain the very sweet, indefinable, new sensation produced in me, in the presence of that Saint?... I would have knelt before him if men could be worshiped.” The two men remained close friends throughout their lives.

A huge influence in his decision to resume composing was his growing interest in Il Risorgimento, a political movement which began in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars which sought to free northern Italy from the Austro-Hungarian Empire and unite the patchwork of independent city-states into one nation of Italy. In addition to composing numerous operas with nationalist undertones, Verdi also had the good fortune of having a name perfectly suited to making him a figurehead for the cause. Starting after the First Italian War for Independence in 1848, Victor Emmanuel, King of Sardinia, emerged as the preferred leader of a unified Italy. As the Italian term for King of Italy is Rei D’Italia, shouts of “Viva VERDI” served both as adoration for the composer and for Victor Emmanuel Rei D’Italia.

Upon learning of Manzoni’s death in May 1873, Verdi was so distraught he found himself unable to attend the funeral. However, in his grief for his friend he found a worthy use of materials he had composed in 1869 for a failed attempt to collaborate with other Italian composers to create a Requiem to commemorate Gioachino Rossini. The Rossini project was envisioned to bring together the writing skills of thirteen opera composers, chosen by a committee, with each providing a movement to the overall work. Verdi’s movement was to be the final of the mass, a setting of the “Libera Me” text. Internal bickering and clashing egos led the Rossini project to be canceled, and the proposed publisher, Ricordi, returned Verdi’s completed manuscript to him years after it was submitted. PROGRAM NOTES

FEATURED ARTISTS

Verdi’s ”Libera Me” would provide the nucleus of the work that would eventually become his Messe de Requiem which included themes he would go on to use for the “Requiem Aeternam” and “Dies Irae” movements. Further simplifying the compositional process was Verdi’s employment of abandoned melodies from his opera Don Carlos for the “Lacrymosa.” Yet, there was still much to write, and he would work out the remainder of the mass over the course of the following ten months. Both Verdi’s religious views and his compositional style created controversy around the work after its premiere in 1874. Verdi wanted the work premiered at San Marco in Milan, and special permission was required from the Archbishop to allow women to sing in the performance. The city of Milan eagerly funded the premiere, furthering tensions between civic and religious institutions of the time. Compromise was reached with the decision to perform the Requiem as part of a “dry mass,” a rite presided over by a monsignor but without the consecration of communion. Verdi reportedly was drawn to the cathedral more for its acoustical properties rather than its centrality to the faith as he was not an active practitioner of Catholicism, being described as “a very doubtful believer.” Upon hearing the Requiem, conductor Hans von Bülow described the work as an ”opera in ecclesiastical dress,” and indeed other critics were unable or unwilling to recognize the style of this work as distinct from Verdi’s operas. Accusations of excessive theatricality have continued to plague the work, causing debates of whether it is more appropriate for the church or the concert hall. That said, Verdi’s choral settings demonstrate a clear effort to create a work that would stand apart from his dramatic works. Among the most notable of these can be identified in the a cappella writing for the chorus, such as the “Te decet hymnus” portion of the opening movement. Verdi later recalls the sounds of chant in the “Hostias” portion of the Offertory. A fugue, such as those used in the Requiems of Mozart and Berlioz, appears in the “Sanctus” section of the mass. While none of these compositional techniques were particularly innovative, they stand in sharp contrast to those heard in Verdi’s operatic output. While not as ubiquitous in the repertory as Verdi’s operas, his Messe de Requiem offers listeners an opportunity to hear the breadth of his compositional skills. While he clearly made efforts to keep his work from sounding excessively operatic, it still features the gripping drama and soaring beauty that has come to be identified with all of his works.

Requiem et Kyrie Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Requiem et Kyrie Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, And let perpetual light shine upon them.

Te decet hymnus Deus in Zion, Et tibi redetur votum in Jerusalem

A hymn benefits thee, O God in Zion, And to thee a vow shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem.

Exaudi orationem meam, Ad te omnis caro veniet.

Hear my prayer, For unto thee all flesh shall come.

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Lord have mercy; Christ have mercy; Lord have mercy.

Dies irae Dies irae, dies illa, Solvet saeclum in favilla: Teste David cum Sibylla.

Dies irae Day of wrath, that day shall dissolve the world into embers, as David prophesied with the Sibyl.

Quantus tremor est futurus Quando judex est venturus, Cuncta stricte discussurus!

How great the trembling will be, when the judge shall come, the rigorous investigator of all things!

Tuba mirum spargens sonum Per sepulcra regionum, Coget omnes ante thronum.

The trumpet, spreading its wondrous sound through the tombs of every land, will summon all before the throne.

Mors stupebit, et natura, Cum resurget creatura, Iudicanti responsura.

Death will be stunned, likewise nature, when all creation shall rise again to answer the One judging.

Liber scriptus proferetur, In quo totum continetur, Unde mundus judicetur.

A written book will be brought forth, in which all shall be contained, and from which the world shall be judged.

Judex ergo cum sedebit, Quid-quid latet apparebit: Nil inultum remanebit.

When therefore the Judge is seated, whatever lies hidden shall be revealed, No wrong shall remain unpunished.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus? Quem patronum rogaturus? Cum vix justus sit secures.

What then am I, a poor wretch, going to say? Which protector shall I ask for, When even the just are scarcely secure?

TEXT AND TRANSLATION Rex tremendae majestatis, Qui salvandos salvas gratis, Salva me fons pietatis.

King of terrifying majesty, Who freely saves the saved: save me fount of pity.

Recordare Jesu pie, Quod sum causa tuae viae: Ne me perdas illa die.

Remember merciful Jesus, that I am the cause of your sojourn; do not cast me out on that day.

Quaerens me, sedisti lassus: Redemisti crucem passus: Tantus labor non sit cassus.

Seeking me, you sat down weary; Having suffered the Cross, you redeemed me. May such great labor not go in vain.

Juste judex ultionis, Donum fac remissionis Ante diem rationis.

Just Judge of vengeance, grant the gift of remission before the day of reckoning.

Ingemisco tamquam reus: Culpa rubet vultus meus: Supplicanti parce Deus.

I groan, like one who is guilty; my face blushes with guilt. spare thy supplicant, O God.

Qui Mariam absolvisti, Et latronem exaudisti, Mihi quoque spem dedisti.

You who absolved Mary, and heeded the thief, have also given hope to me.

Preces meae non sunt dignae: Sed tu bonus fac benigne, Ne perenni cremer igne.

My prayers are not worthy, but Thou, good one, kindly grant that I not burn in the everlasting fires.

Inter oves locum praesta, Et ab haedis me sequestra, Statuens in parte dextra.

Grant me a favored place among thy sheep, and separate me from the goats, placing me at thy right hand.

Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus addictis, Voca me cum benedictis

When the accursed are confounded, Consigned to the fierce flames: Call me to be with the blessed.

Oro supplex et acclinis, Cor constritum quasi cinis: Gere curam mei finis.

I pray suppliant and kneeling, my heart contrite as if it were ashes: protect me in my final hour.

Lacrimosa dies illa, Qua resurget ex favilla, Judicandus homo reus.

O how tearful that day, On which the guilty shall rise from the embers to be judged. Spare them then, O God.

Huic ergo parce Deus: Pie Jesu Domine, dona eis requiem. Amen.

Merciful Lord Jesus, Grant them rest. Amen.

The following contributions were made to United Arts or the 2022 Collaborative Campaign for the Arts between July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022. www.UnitedArts.cc | 407.628.0333

The Bach Festival Society of Winter Park was founded in 1935 at Rollins College to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birth by presenting the composer’s orchestral and choral music to the public for its “enlightenment, education, pleasure, and enjoyment.” The Society decided early on to operate in partnership with Rollins College while still maintaining its status as a fully independent non-profit organization. Mrs. Isabelle Sprague-Smith, a former New York artist and school principal, was the president and driving force behind the Bach Festival Society from 1935 until her death in 1950. At Mrs. Sprague-Smith’s death, the future of the Bach Festival Society was uncertain. Rollins President Hugh McKean asked John M. Tiedtke, the treasurer of Rollins College, a music lover and an astute businessman, to fill the opening and he agreed. Mr. Tiedtke served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees until his death in December 2004. Under his leadership, the Bach Festival Society expanded its programming to include two additional choral programs beyond the Annual Festival, top-tier visiting soloists and ensembles, and community events in Winter Park. Following Mr. Tiedtke’s death, the Society began a period of modernization and growth. Today, the Society maintains an all-volunteer choir of over 185 singers from throughout Central Florida and a professional orchestra of nearly 50 members. We present nearly 30 ticketed performances, dozens of in-school educational programs, a high school choral festival, and several community concerts; we produce recordings, present the Young at Heart Chorale, and form high-level artistic partnerships reaching approximately 50,000 people annually. The Bach Festival Society is the third-oldest continuously operating Bach Festival in the United States and Central Florida’s longest-running performing arts organization. We maintain a strong partnership with Rollins College and provide high-quality performance and learning opportunities to students, faculty, and staff. 25

EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

The Bach Festival Society offers music-making and educational opportunities for all ages. The Bach Festival Choir is comprised of auditioned singers, rehearsing year-round. The Young at Heart Chorale is a volunteer singing group for those 55+ years young performing at local community centers. The Bach to the Future initiative provides programs for students from pre-K to high school, including the FreshStARTS program which brings unique musical learning experiences into the classroom featuring the Bach Vocal Artists. The High School Honors Choral Festival invites local groups for workshops with collegiate choral directors from across the country, culminating in the annual selection of the Choir of Distinction. Master Classes led by world-renowned visiting artists give students and patrons a unique insider’s perspective on the process of fine-tuning classical musical excellence.
