JOHN V. SINCLAIR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AND CONDUCTOR
John V. Sinclair has established a national reputation as one of the leading conductors of choral masterworks while locally being known as one of the hardest-working and in demand artists of the Central Florida cultural community. Now in his 36th season as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Bach Festival Society, he has broadened the musical offerings of masterworks by both classical and contemporary composers into the repertoire of the organization while perpetuating his reputation as a scholarly interpreter of J.S. Bach’s music. He continues his imaginative programming, creative interpretations, and expressive conducting. Dr. Sinclair, known as a master teacher, is Director of Music at Rollins College and holds the John M. Tiedtke Endowed Chair. As a career educator, Sinclair keeps Bach’s educational focus vital by providing a broad range of musical programs and experiences for individuals of all ages. As a conductor who is equally adept at directing choral and orchestral music, he has been referred to as Central Florida’s “resident conductor”. He has appeared as conductor for more than a thousand EPCOT Candlelight performances in addition to his work as a clinician and lecturer. The Bach Festival, under his leadership, has achieved international recognition by touring in Europe, producing nationally released CDs and broadcasts, and performing with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra during their Florida residencies. Dr. Sinclair holds a masters and doctoral degree from the Photo credit: Mary Kent University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Conservatory of Music. His undergraduate school, William Jewell College honored him with its most prestigious Citation for Achievement. In addition to editing and interpreting historical choral works through the Moravian Music Foundation, he has authored an anecdotal book entitled Falling Off the Podium and Other Life Lessons. The late Wall Street Journal’s arts critic, Terry Teachout wrote, “John is a gifted conductor, a great educator, and the best of all possible colleagues.” He has twice been named “Outstanding Educator of the Year” by United Arts of Central Florida and was listed as a state of Florida “Power Player in the Arts” by the Florida International Magazine. Most recently he was honored as one of the “10 All-Time Influentials,” chosen from 10-years of accumulated Winter Park Magazine honorees. For more than three decades, John Sinclair has shared his talent and dedication to musical excellence with the Central Florida community and beyond. BachFestivalFlorida.org

OUR HISTORY & ROOTED LEGACY The story of the Bach Festival Society began in March 1935, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birth. Winter Park was a community shaped by residents of remarkable imagination, culture, and civic dedication. At the center of this environment stood the newly dedicated Knowles Memorial Chapel at Rollins College, designed by world-renowned architect Ralph Adams Cram. Seeking to honor Bach’s legacy, choir director Christopher O. Honaas, organist Herman F. Siewert, and the Chapel Choir presented a Friday afternoon Vesper Service. The response was immediate and overwhelming— the crowd was so large that the Chapel ran out of printed programs. Recognizing the community’s deep desire for extraordinary music, Rollins President Hamilton Holt convened key leaders, including Isabelle Sprague-Smith and Frances Knowles Warren, to establish an annual tradition. That single afternoon performance laid the foundation for Florida’s oldest continuously operating performing arts organization.
DECADES OF VISIONARY LEADERSHIP Great cultural institutions endure through extraordinary stewardship. When leadership transitioned in 1950, Rollins President Hugh McKean asked business leader and philanthropist John M. Tiedtke to guide the Bach Festival. Over five decades of steadfast dedication, Tiedtke helped elevate the festival into a premier institution of classical music while cementing its deep ties to Central Florida. That commitment to artistic excellence expanded in 1990 with the arrival of Artistic Director and Conductor Dr. John V. Sinclair. Under Dr. Sinclair’s leadership, the organization entered its most dynamic era—growing the more than 200-voice Bach Festival Choir, establishing the professional Bach Festival Orchestra, and launching vital educational initiatives throughout the region. Today, as we celebrate our 92nd season, we honor the visionary leaders who built this legacy and the passionate community that sustains it. 10

OUR CONNECTION WITH ROLLINS COLLEGE AND THE KNOWLES MEMORIAL CHAPEL Since 1935, the Bach Festival Society and Rollins College have shared a meaningful partnership rooted in education, culture, and community engagement. At the heart of this connection is Knowles Memorial Chapel. A generous gift from Frances Knowles Warren in memory of her father, Francis Bangs Knowles, a founder of Winter Park and an original Rollins Trustee, the Chapel remains one of the finest architectural treasures in Florida.
Designed by Ralph Adams Cram, famous for masterpieces such as New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the Chapel was built with soaring timbered ceilings and acoustics specifically crafted for sacred masterworks. For 92 seasons, this majestic chapel has held space for the Bach Choir and Orchestra, defining the signature sound our patrons treasure.
THE JOURNEY FORWARD To ensure that Knowles Memorial Chapel continues to inspire future generations, the historic building will undergo a comprehensive restoration during the 2027–2028 season. This essential preservation work will safeguard the Chapel’s architectural beauty and legendary acoustics for the next century.

While our iconic home pauses for renewal, our music will continue across the region. Stay tuned for details about Bach on the Road, a special initiative that will bring the Bach Choir, Orchestra, and guest artists into extraordinary venue partner spaces throughout Central Florida. We look forward to sharing this unique traveling season with you before returning home to the beautifully restored Knowles Memorial Chapel.
