PROGRAM NOTES Masquerade from Merchant of Venice Suite, Sir Arthur Sullivan Arthur Sullivan was half of the famed Gilbert & Sullivan duo that gave us such sparkling operettas as HMS Pinafore, Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado. Gilbert’s dexterity with language and Sullivan’s sophisticated melodic prowess brought Victorian theater to its height, and their influence complemented the rise of the Broadway musical across the pond. They fanned political and social issues through wit, slapping the British parliament, the military and elitism with little more than a good tune, and audiences left the hall both entertained and enlightened. Dozens of moments, including the tongue-twisting Major-General song, have pattered their way into popular culture. Sullivan came from good stock, and if anything was ambitious. He learned to play the instruments in his father’s royal band, a proficiency that helped him, at age 14, win a Mendelssohn scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, followed by studies at the Leipzig Conservatory. It might be argued that Gilbert needed Sullivan as much as Sullivan needed Gilbert, but some music can stand alone in concert, separate from text. This includes two early tributes to Shakespeare, the Tempest from 1861 and the suite to the Merchant of Venice five years later. Sullivan composed Merchant as music to the play at Prince’s Theatre in Manchester, an extended suite in seven sections – of which four will be played for today’s concert − all focused on the end of Act II when the protagonists Jessica and Lorenzo elope. George Grove, editor of the eponymous dictionary of music, wrote notes for an 1871 performance at the Crystal Palace in London (edited here for clarity): “When the music begins, the stage is empty and night approaches. The distant cry of the gondoliers echoing along the canals, and the voices of the masquers as they approach nearer are depicted in the music. The revelry begins. The dances are first a bourrée; next a grotesque dance for Pierrots and Harlequins; and thirdly a general dance in modern waltz rhythm. “Night has settled down when Jessica makes her escape. The fun waxes furious, and amid the glare of torches, the glitter of lanterns, and the shouts and songs of the revelers, the curtain descends.’’

Romeo and Juliet (Overture-fantasia), Peter Tchaikovsky From Purcell to Prokofiev, Shakespeare has inspired composers in countless tone poems, suites, ballets, symphonies, and operas, the romantic fire of his language heating each note to a boil. Of these, few have synthesized music and drama as well as Tchaikovsky in his Romeo and Juliet Overture-fantasia, a tightly wound score that captures − with impressive brevity − the pulsations of the bard’s famous story. 10

PROGRAM NOTES It may not have happened without a suggestion by the composer Mily Balakirev, a member of a group called the Mighty Five, which included Alexander Borodin, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Modest Mussorgsky, and César Cui. They banded as a counter to the music of Europe, favoring a Russian nationalism they could call their own. Tchaikovsky stood outside this group, embracing the Western musical tradition, but without sacrificing his Russian voice. When Balakirev mentioned setting the story of Romeo and Juliet to music, the 29-year-old Tchaikovsky responded: “It will be my most monumental work. It now seems to me absurd that I could not see earlier that I was predestined, as it were, to set this drama to music.’’ After two revisions, he exclaimed that “it is the best work I have ever done.’’ The overture opens with a solemn introduction, the reedy woodwinds carrying in a low register the sacred music of Friar Lawrence. The impassioned and violent theme of the Montague-Capulet rivalry follows, and just as our blood pressure rises, Tchaikovsky softens it with one of his most caressing melodies, a depiction of the love between the two doomed teenagers. With these themes in place, the music dives into its development phase, balancing tension and release through moments of reflection and nervous energy. Tchaikovsky handles all of this with an exquisite feel for color, instrumental blending, and masterful use of the harp. In the end, the orchestra quietly drifts away, the timpani sounding its dirge − the final breath of the tragic lovers – before all the musicians join forces in the chords of a fortissimo coda.

Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart), Sir Paul McCartney Sir Paul McCartney, at 81, has endeared himself as one of the most creative pop songwriters and singers of his generation, the author of such impressive airs as Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, Penny Lane, Let it Be and The Long and Winding Road. During his time with the Beatles, he experimented with classical concepts shared by George Martin, whose arrangements led, in part, to the band’s unique sound. Photo credit: Scott Cook From Martin, McCartney explored string voicings and novel instrumental shades, and moved beyond simple pop chords to more sophisticated designs – all without learning to read music. He also delved into the avant-garde world of composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, who appears on the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, and whose style can be felt in the crescendo that ends A Day in the Life from that album.

But it took another two decades after the demise of the Beatles for McCartney to tackle truly large forms, relying on arrangers to flesh out and orchestrate his ideas. The first of these was the Liverpool Oratorio of 1990, when he teamed with Carl Davis and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Six years later came the symphonic poem Standing Stone, followed in 2001 by the work you will hear today, Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart) for chorus and orchestra. BachFestivalFlorida.org

11

PROGRAM NOTES “What does Behold My Heart mean to me?’’ McCartney told National Public Radio after the premier. “It seemed to me that it was sort of ‘let me give you my spiritual views, let me give you an idea of what I hold important in my heart.’ So, you know, things like truth, love, peace, spiritual welfare, and things that have always seemed important. I thought, well, it's a pretty good basis for the piece.’’ Commissioned by Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1997, the work took eight years to complete, and was interrupted early on by the death of McCartney’s wife, Linda. He fell into a state of mourning, putting the music aside, then adding a Lament in her memory. “She was very much a part of it in the beginning,’’ said McCartney. “And when she passed away, I really couldn't write and I spent quite a period obviously grieving. But when I came out of the worst of that period, I was able to get back to writing. And so, in the middle of this piece you will hear what we call the Lament. And that's really the saddest part of the whole piece, and that was what got me back into writing.’’ After its premiere, the Sunday Express of London called the oratorio a profoundly moving work: “Designed to be sung by young people, it sidesteps the usual exhausting reiteration of themes in favor of constantly unfolding and overlapping melodies.’’ Others found it lacking, including the New York Times critic Bernard Holland: “Someone who has done as much for music as Mr. McCartney deserves to write any piece of music he wants. But in Messiah land, however, he finds himself occupying alien territory.’’ The work was written in both Latin and English, scored for full orchestra, soprano and mixed choir, and unfolds in five sections – Spiritus, Gratia, Interlude (Lament), Musica, and Ecce Cor Meum. It begins in a soft choral pianissimo, explores a variety of melodic territory in the inner sections as the composer strives for a classical-style pastiche, although one that bears his signature. The work ends on an exuberant, uplifting note that, for some listeners, reflects the composer’s love for his late wife. ~Program notes for the Ecce Cor Meum (Behold My Heart) performance provided by Kurt Loft, Journalist and Arts Writer, The Tampa Tribune

FEATURED ARTIST STEPHEN MUMBERT, BASS-BARITONE Hailed as a “Scene-stealer…with an unquestionably evil-sounding bass voice and a knack for staying in character even when he isn’t the center of attention,” Stephen Mumbert is currently an Adjunct Professor of Voice at Rollins College and maintains a private voice studio here in Orlando FL. He is a graduate of Stetson University where he holds a B.M. in voice performance, and he also holds an M.M. in opera from The Boston Conservatory. Recent performances include Riccardo in Bellini’s I Puritani with Minnesota Concert Opera, Mozart’s Requiem with the Riverside Community Chorale and Orchestra and the Dakota Valley Symphony (broadcast on Twin Cities Public Television), Handel’s Messiah with the Villages Philharmonic, Messiah Choral Society, and Space Coast Symphony Orchestra, Jesus in Bach’s St Matthew Passion, BWV 90, and Faure’s Requiem with the Bach Festival Society, Menotti’s The Telephone with Musical Traditions, Menotti’s The Medium at the Orlando Fringe Festival, Haydn’s Creation, John Young's The Death of Ivan Ilych, Verdi's Rigoletto, Cantus Vocal Ensemble's All is Calm, Puccini's Gianni Schicchi both with Opera Orlando, and a new opera project in Herschel Garfein’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and in Robert Aldridge's Sister Carrie staged with the respective Grammy award winning composers in residence. Upcoming local performances include a return to Steinmetz Hall to sing the bass solos in Handel’s Messiah, bass soloist for A Classic Christmas, Bach’s Magnificat, and Voices of Light, all with the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park. Stephen is thrilled to be a founding member of the Bach Vocal Artists.

ABOUT BACH

MUSIC-MAKING INITIATIVES The renowned Bach Festival Choir is comprised of auditioned singers, enjoying weekly rehearsals and specializing in singing choral masterworks in partnership with the Bach Festival Orchestra. The Young at Heart Chorale is a volunteer singing group for those 55+ years young. The group has weekly rehearsals and performs outreach concerts at local community centers. The Bach Festival Youth Choirs have made their highly anticipated return this fall. Young musicians will refine their musicianship skills through weekly rehearsals and will be featured in performances with the Bach Festival Choir and Orchestra.

EDUCATION The Bach Festival Society's Fresh StARTs program places professional musicians in elementary and secondary schools to present unique musical learning experiences. The newly formed Bach Vocal Artists offer educational outreach through open rehearsals, and in-school visits. The world-renowned muscians featured in the Bach Festival Society's Visitng Artists Series often present master classes to students and patrons. These classes offer a unique perspective on the process of creating musical excellence. Our popular High School Honors Choral Festival provides valuable workshop/clinic feedback from collegiate choral directors recruited from across the country. This fesitval helps prepare high school choirs for their annual Music Performance Assessments. Bach Festival Society's newest Education program is the Choir of Distinction. Each year Central Florida choirs are invited to compete in a multi-phased audition process and adjudicated on tone, preparation and effect. The Lake Nona Singers from Lake Nona High School are the first recipient of the Choir of Distinction title. They will enjoy choral mentorship, invitations to Bach Festival Choir rehearsals and the opportunity to perform with the Bach Festival Orchestra. 40
