DANIEL ADAM MALTZ, FORTEPIANO

Daniel Adam Maltz is a fortepianist based in Vienna, Austria and specializes in Wiener Klassik (Viennese Classicism), especially the works of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, which he performs on the Viennese fortepianos of their time.

Daniel is a dual citizen of the United States and Israel and comes from a musical family – his mother is a cellist, and his father, a composer, taught him piano and composition starting at four years of age. Before switching to the fortepiano, Daniel studied privately with internationally renowned pianists John O’Conor, Gil Sullivan, and Robert Lehrbaumer. Daniel studied fortepiano performance at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna.

He debuted at Carnegie Hall (Weill) at age 22 and is a sought-after soloist, Lieder accompanist, and clinician. He refined his command of historical practices through private study with Andreas Staier and Ingomar Rainer. Daniel is devoted to performing on Viennese fortepianos, utilizing the vast range of tones and colors familiar to the composers. He brings his expertise in the Viennese sound, culture, philosophies, and performance practices of the Classical era to his interpretations. Critics praise Daniel’s performances for their “broad warmth” with “lavish but tasteful” playing (Classical Sonoma) as well as his “very sensitive phrasing” with “marvelous dynamic contrasts… [that] enabled him to shape his lines beautifully” (Marblehead Current)..

Daniel also hosts Classical Cake, a podcast about Viennese classical music and culture.

THE EROICA TRIO

The most sought-after trio in the world, the Grammy nominated Eroica Trio enraptures audiences with flawless technical virtuosity, irresistible enthusiasm, and sensual elegance. The three women who make up this celebrated ensemble electrify the concert stage with their passionate performances. The New York Times writes, “There is an edge of the seat intensity to every note they produce”.

The Trio won the prestigious Naumburg Award, resulting in a highly successful Lincoln Center debut and has since toured the United States, Europe, Middle East, South America, and Asia. While maintaining their demanding concert schedule, the Eroica Trio has released eight critically lauded recordings for Angel/EMI classics Records, garnering them multiple Grammy nominations. The first all female chamber ensemble to reach the top echelon of the field, the women of the Eroica Trio have shattered the age-old gender barrier, leading the vanguard and inspiring many to follow.

The unique history of the players of the Eroica Trio goes all the way back to childhood including study and performance at the Red Fox Music Camp, Meadowmount School of Music, the Curtis Institute of Music, the Juilliard School, the the Tanglewood Music Center. This intricate web of early connections helped forge a lifelong bond between them.

The Eroica Trio performs the Beethoven Triple Concerto more frequently than any other trio in the world, having appeared with renowned symphonies such as the Chicago Symphony and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. The Eroica Trio’s recording of the Beethoven Triple with the Prague Chamber Orchestra was so successful it landed this piece on Billboards Top 20 for the first time in recording history. A multi-city tour of North America with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra culminated in a sold out performance on the “Great Performers at Lincoln Center” series in Avery Fisher Hall in New York City.

Whether the Eroica Trio is interpreting the Baroque Masters, the power and strength of Beethoven, the jazzy tunes of Schoenfield or the Bluegrass toe tapping rhythms of Mark O’Connor, their performances are deeply personal and continue to thrill audiences around the world.

J.S. Bach (1685-1750)

Chaconne from the Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004 (translation: Anne Dudley)

Ask a classically trained musician to name a composer they always return to, and the answer will often be J.S. Bach. He’s been gone for more than 270 years, but his creations resonate, in the words of the Bach scholar Christoph Wolff, as “true ideals and imperishable models of art.’’

An instrument that Bach blessed with magic was the violin, and his six Sonatas and Partitas – like the Suites for Cello – are masterstrokes. One of the most striking sections is the Chaconne that ends the Partita No. 2, a fiendishly difficult, variation-form marathon that demands a performer’s total concentration and endurance over nearly 260 bars.

The piece begins with a somber theme through four measures, then launches into 64 variations of equal length, each increasingly more complex and varied in tempo. Some consider the piece to be too contrapuntally intricate for the linear voice of a violin, hence the countless arrangements for multiple instruments, including the trio you are about to enjoy. The violinist Joshua Bell has called the Chaconne “not just one of the greatest pieces of music ever written, but one of the greatest achievements of anyone in history.’’

Tomaso Albinoni (1671-1751) Adagio in G minor, (translation: Eroica Trio)

Tomaso Albinoni came from a privileged Venetian family, and his wealth and status allowed him to compose at leisure and without the pressure of deadlines. Nonetheless, he was prolific, writing 100 sonatas, 55 operas and about 50 concertos, and his devotion to the oboe gave the instrument new-found gravitas. Sadly, dozens of Albinoni’s scores were lost during World War II, when Allied bombers destroyed the Dresden State Library.

For all his industry, Albinoni is best known today for the so-called Adagio, a melancholy piece in G minor arranged for strings and organ by the Milanese musicologist Remo Giazotto, whose 1958 publication borrowed only a bass line and six bars of melody written by Albinoni. The work often appears on greatest hits of the Baroque recordings and movie soundtracks.

The heart of this short, single-movement piece is its haunting main theme, which repeats with great effect in Giazotto’s simple arrangement. The lament rises and falls in soft arcs of sound, all the while supported by organ continuo. Modest yet potent, the tune endures most any alteration, from solo instrument to symphony orchestra.

PROGRAM NOTES

Paul Schoenfeld (1947- )

Café Music for Violin, Cello, and Piano

In 1985, Paul Schoenfeld began sketching ideas for a commission he received from the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and was inspired by the jazz trio he often played with at Murray’s restaurant in Minneapolis. He wanted to compose music that would sit comfortably in both casual and formal venues, with a sound that spoke of the city’s eclectic cultures. He called his new work, appropriately, Café Music.

“My intention was to write a kind of high-class dinner music,’’ he has said, “music that could be played at a restaurant but might also – just barely – find its way into a concert hall.’’

True to its tempo marking allegro con fuoco, the opening section leaps off stage and into the listener’s lap, its energy palpable and rhythmic phrasing full of jazzy swagger – like music with attitude. The middle andante begins with an eloquent theme on the piano, soon taken up and elaborated by the cello against high, piercing notes on the violin. The movement ends in repose, the melody reminiscent of Gershwin’s Summertime.

The closing presto opens with a series of staccato blows that launch listeners on a moto perpetuo ride to the finish, an intriguing mix of jazz and gypsy, waltz and ragtime fused together with barely a chance for the threesome to catch their breath.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-47)

Piano Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66

Felix Mendelssohn was among the most gifted artists of his age, noted as much for his exacting craftmanship as the opulent charm and tunefulness of his music. A preternatural composer, he wrote seemingly without effort, crafting the Octet for Strings at age 16 and the overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream a year later. He completed his two lone trios in 1839 and 1845, respectively, nearly a half century after Haydn had mastered the form, and fully aware of the definitive works by Beethoven, the Ghost and Archduke. But Mendelssohn’s own voice comes through in the glorious outpouring of ideas that define so much of his chamber music.

Op. 66 opens with a restless, agitated theme transformed through the dialogue of the three instruments. An expressive Song Without Words second movement follows, then an elfin-like scherzo. The finale, marked appassionato, introduces the 16th-century chorale Before Thy Throne, which soon marries into a passage that pushes piano, violin and cello to their sonorous limits.
