This report outlines the generous investment made by so many in support of our mission as a Catholic college preparatory school. During the past year, many lives have been touched by the generosity and consideration of others. Our educational mission is nurtured and strengthened as we steward our varied resources in benefit of the needs of our students. From spiritual formation and service opportunities to academic excellence, athletic achievements and student involvement in an array of activities, each Crusader is challenged to find and develop a personal relationship with God, family and the school community. Each day, extraordinary students interact with devoted faculty and staff members who guide them and develop connections that will last a lifetime. Your support has helped to foster these wonderful interactions. Last year, we asked for your support and our alumni, parents and friends responded with generosity. MISSION STATEMENT Bishop Fenwick High School is a Catholic, co-educational college preparatory secondary school. The faculty and staff are committed to creating an academically challenging and nurturing environment that is rooted in the mandate of the gospel message of Jesus Christ and in the charism of St. Julie Billiart, foundress of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. We believe that our ministry calls us to “teach as Christ did.”

FENWICK AT A GLANCE Founded: 1959, by Richard Cardinal Cushing, and staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Number of Religious: 1 De La Salle Christian Brother, 2 Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. Campus Size: 59 acres of athletic fields and campus grounds. Students: Over 550, from over 45 communities in the greater Boston area including international students. Student/Faculty Ratio: 13:1. Scholarships and Financial Aid: For the 2014-2015 school year, over $1,400,000 was awarded in scholarships and financial aid. Over 60% of all students receive some form of financial assistance. College Acceptances: Recently, Bishop Fenwick seniors have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country, including Brown, Penn, MIT, Boston College, RIT, Middlebury, Georgetown, Holy Cross, Tisch School for the Arts at NYU, Tulane, Savannah College of Art and Design, Boston University, Wake Forest, Clemson, Bowdoin and Villanova. Extracurricular: Nearly 30 clubs, organizations and extracurricular programs are available to students in all grade levels, with offerings as varied as Book Club, Campus Outreach (Service), Current Events, Dance Club, Drama, Environmental Club, Math Team, Mock Trial, Multicultural Club, National Honor Society, Newspaper, Pep Band, Robotics, SAC (Student Leadership), Select Choir, Technology and Yearbook. Athletics: Bishop Fenwick offers 26 interscholastic sports at a variety of levels, which participate primarily in the Catholic Central League. Nearly 80% of the student body participates in at least one sport. Each year Fenwick sees numerous students continue their athletic careers at various Division I, II and III colleges and universities across the country. For Our Male Student Athletes: Football, Soccer, Cross Country, Golf, Basketball, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Indoor Track, Baseball, Tennis, Lacrosse and Outdoor Track. For Our Female Student Athletes: Field Hockey, Soccer, Cross Country, Golf, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Gymnastics, Basketball, Ice Hockey, Swimming, Indoor Track, Softball, Tennis, Lacrosse and Outdoor Track. Athletic Facilities: On Campus — Turf field stadium for lacrosse, soccer, football and field hockey; all-weather surface 400-meter track, cross country course, 2 baseball fields, 2 softball fields, 1 grass soccer field, 1 grass field hockey field, 5 tennis courts and Le Duc Center training facility. Off Campus — Ice hockey teams use the James E. McVann-Louis F. O’Keefe Memorial Skating Rink as home ice. The golf team’s home course is The Meadows at Peabody. The gymnastics team competes at Baker’s School of Gymnastics and the swim team competes at the Salem YMCA.

Capital Investments Entering its 57th year at the start of this 2015-2016 academic year, Bishop Fenwick has made recent and significant capital investments into the campus facilities, including the following three:

Network Infrastructure: Wireless infrastructure and core network switches upgraded to support greater school-wide connectivity. Classrooms, computer labs, library, common areas and a section of the athletic fields were upgraded with new managed Cisco Access points. Closet switches were upgraded to Cisco Catalyst 2960 POE equipment.

Extensive Roof Replacement and Repair: Roof removal and replacement of a fully adhered reinforced EPDM roof system covering 39,820 square feet.

Resurface of 400-meter track and long jump facility: Resurfaced 36,000 square meters of championship-level 400-meter track oval, D zones and runway in addition to a complete renovation of the long jump area.

The Class of 1965 gathered over the weekend of September 11th – 13th to celebrate its 50th Reunion. More than 100 alums and spouses gathered during the weekend, which was perfectly organized by Mike ’65 and Jen Schunemann, P’94, ’98, Carolyn Vitale ’65 Wakefield, Bob ’65 and Maureen Wilson ’65 D’Alessandro, GP’04, Rich ’65 and Pam Zielski ’65 MacDonald, Joan McKeogh ’65 Kelley, Fr. Guess who’s been invited to Carnegie Hall – AGAIN?

Bishop Fenwick Music Program Recognized BFHS students competed in April 2015 in a national high school musical competition at Riverside Church in New York City. Three performing groups competed: the BFHS Concert Choir, the Select Choir and the Men’s Choir. All of the groups earned scores high enough to win gold, the highest award possible, qualifying them to return to New York in April 2016 to perform at Carnegie Hall. Bishop Fenwick first performed at Carnegie Hall in 2009, and our faculty and students have been diligently preparing for this return performance! BFHS was also awarded the “The Spirit of New York” Award for their professional and cooperative attitude throughout the April competition. These awards are truly a reflection of the talent and hard work of our faculty and students. Make sure to mark your calendars for the annual Christmas Concert showcasing our talented student-musicians on December 16, 2015 at 7:00pm and you’ll understand what all the fuss is about! Everyone is invited to join the students for a pre-concert catered dinner at 5:00pm. Ticket information will be available on the website and funds raised will support the trip to Carnegie Hall. We look forward to the Fenwick Family joining together during the Christmas Season to enjoy beautifully inspired Christmas and holiday music.

Maria K. Faleyev ’16 Maria Faleyev, a current senior, auditioned with thousands of other pianists nationally to be selected as one of eight students to perform at Carnegie Hall this past May as a member of the American Fine Arts Music Festival. Maria traveled this summer to perform at several concerts in Italy and Germany. Currently applying to several colleges, Maria plans to study finance. A very talented yet humble young lady, Maria has made an indelible mark here at Bishop Fenwick High School. –7–

A quick conversation with

Diane Colozzi Eromin about Bishop Fenwick Technology and the Tablet Program I have been a member of the Fenwick faculty since 1980. Going from the chalkboard to the whiteboard was just the beginning. After using the Promethean board (an interactive whiteboard) for the past eight years, there is no going back. Now with the tablets, it is only getting better. Sending my students a digital worksheet for them to write on digitally makes the tablet a transformational educational tool. Last year during the pilot tablet program, I noticed a difference in how my students were engaged in the class lesson. While we were working on an exercise, all the students were able to respond and send their answers to the Promethean board via their tablets. The answers would make me aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and I could see immediately what needed to be reinforced.

It was amazing to see the entire class participate!

Once the students adapted to the tablets, the ease of engagement and learning grew. This year, I see the same students from my pilot program class using the tablet with incredible confidence because of their pilot experience. My new student users will learn to adapt too! The tablet gives me the option to have a PAPERLESS lesson! As a foreign language teacher, the tablet has become the new language lab where students can listen and record. And with the use of the OneNote Class Notebooks, the teacher has access to assess the students’ work. The tablet incorporates all four skills necessary for learning a foreign language: listening, speaking, reading and writing. For those who have known me these past thirty-five years, I used to carry around several book bags. Now, when I leave my room, all I need is my plan book and my tablet.

Mr. Bishop Fenwick Spirit John Jaworski ’68 turns the page to his next chapter If they say that consistency is the mark of a champion, then John Jaworski is a champion for Bishop Fenwick High School. Dubbed Mr. Bishop Fenwick Spirit, John has shared his infectious enthusiasm with the Fenwick Family since September of 1964, his first day as a member of the Class of 1968. This enthusiasm hasn’t waned a bit in 51 years. Recently he was overheard saying to virtually each of the 172 students in the Class of 2019 on their first day last month, “keep those smiles coming!” John most recently was a member of our Guidance Department, and he has worn so many hats (and hairstyles, as noted in previous publications) that he has come into contact with just about everyone here at Fenwick. Now, in the autumn of 2015, Mr. “J” (as he is affectionately known) has decided to change his course at Fenwick. Retire, you ask? No, John is not retiring, but rather staying on in a capacity of support and service for Bishop Fenwick High School, most notably in the realm of Admissions. John has been unselfish in sharing his gifts with Bishop Fenwick, and in response has been quoted, “I have received back tenfold in camaraderie, joy, personal fulfillment and spiritual growth. That is the type of place Fenwick is! If you become invested in Fenwick, you cannot help being blessed in return.” As John begins his next chapter here at Bishop Fenwick, it is with immense gratitude that we say thank you to Mr. Bishop Fenwick Spirit for the role he played in nurturing the goodness and loyalty alive in our community. It has been a true blessing for the Fenwick Family. –9–

Golden Jubilee Sr. Geraldine Burns, SND Once she became a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, all Sr. Geraldine wanted to do was teach mathematics. She began her career in Leominster and Worcester, but once she arrived at Bishop Fenwick, she knew she had discovered her true calling. Since 1974, Sr. Geraldine has played a pivotal role at Bishop Fenwick, beginning as a math teacher. In the early 80s, when asked to move into school administration, she never looked back, and she has continued to have a real and lasting influence ever since. As Sr. Geraldine has been quoted, “I’m here to help our students better themselves as people, students and citizens; however I can reach out to them for their benefit.” Since 1974 Sr. Geraldine has supported more than 8,000 students. Although looks may be deceiving, Sr. Geraldine celebrates her Golden Jubilee this year – 50 years as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. Expressed in SND foundress St. Julie Billiart’s characteristic phrase, “Ah! Qu’il est bon, le bon Dieu” – Oh! How good is the good God!” we have been blessed for the 40-plus years Sr. Geraldine has served our community. Thank you, Sr. Geraldine, for your dedication to the Fenwick Family and congratulations on your Golden Jubilee.

Thank You, Arthur! Arthur Makar ’68, immediate past president of the Board of Trustees, loves Bishop Fenwick. “I wasn’t an outstanding athlete or scholar while at the school,” he says, “but just one of the kids who came down Margin Street Monday through Friday and into the doors during four life-changing years.” A New Yorker for two decades, Arthur is Executive Director of Fight for Sight, a foundation that supports eye and vision research, President of The Players, a club started in 1888 by Edwin Booth to bring together theatre and industry, and a Board member at the Cherry Lane Theatre, New York’s City’s oldest off-broadway performing space. “Kids are often much more intuitive than they are given credit for being,” Arthur stated recently. “I knew at 14 that I would get lost in a large public high school and I wanted to attend Bishop Fenwick. Coming from a single-parent home meant adding some sacrifice for my family. I eventually went to work at Jordan Marsh after school and weekends to help. I was not alone. There were several classmates working throughout the North Shore Shopping Center.” “The majority of my classmates felt the same way about Fenwick: we knew we were loved by the SNDs and faculty; that we were challenged academically and given additional self-confidence through extracurricular activities. This was something worth working for.” Fast forward four decades. Arthur, who had been a donor for many years, was invited to join the 50th Reunion Planning Committee, which lead to a Board appointment and eventual election as Board President. Arthur is concerned that a Bishop Fenwick education may be out of financial reach for many deserving students. For this reason, Arthur will spend the final part of his term on the Fenwick Board helping to expand the fundraising program…he thanks each and every donor who has supported Bishop Fenwick and encourages everyone to join the hundreds of Bishop Fenwick alums and families who in action and deed have made a transformational difference in the lives of BF students. – 11 –

2015 Sponsorship and Scholarship Gathering On September 30, a special gathering was hosted in the Bishop Fenwick High School chapel for a group of benefactors to meet the student recipients of our named scholarships and sponsorships. The benefactors assist in making a Fenwick education a reality for many deserving students. It is through their continued generosity that Fenwick is able to offer financial assistance and scholarship and sponsorship programs to Fenwick families. These programs attract and retain talented students with tremendous potential who contribute in many ways to the Fenwick community. What began in 1978 with the establishment of the first scholarship, the Ted and Gina Jaworski Scholarship Fund, the scholarship and sponsorship program has grown to include a multitude of named scholarships. In 2014, recognizing an increasing need, the Sponsor a Student Program was formalized in further support. This program links a prospective or current student to an individual(s), family or corporate donor willing to contribute in a significant way to making a Fenwick education possible. A four-year named sponsorship is typically established for the deserving student, with the award extended for freshman year and renewed for each successive school year. Our most recent sponsorship is a collaboration among four Fenwick graduates who are colleagues at a Boston financial services institution. They are supporting a very appreciative and talented young man from the class of 2019. We are grateful and proud of the alumni and other benefactors who have made Bishop Fenwick a philanthropic priority and set an example for our current students, who are the benefactors of tomorrow. We continue to count on the Fenwick Family to nurture and sustain the program to make a Fenwick education a reality for many deserving students. Jeff Burke ’65

Do the Right Thing Current students were not even born when Jeff Burke ’65 began making an annual gift to Bishop Fenwick High School, yet his generosity influences them on a daily basis. We were able to say thank you and catch up with Jeff and his wife, Irene, before they attended the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1965 (see pictures on page 6). Question: What was Fenwick’s influence on you ? Jeff: Fenwick made a real difference to me. For the first two years I was an average student. During my junior year though, it all came together. I developed listening and organizational skills which assisted me in becoming a much better student. I will never forget the 96 I received on a science test. I really appreciate the dedication of the sisters and the lay teachers and the accountability required by my coaches. Question: A personal highpoint? Jeff: My most meaningful personal achievement was being initially rejected by St. Anselm College. I wrote a letter indicating that is where I wanted to attend school and promised that I would make the Dean’s List each semester for four years if accepted. I don’t know where that came from, yet I did accomplish that feat. Question: Why support Bishop Fenwick? Jeff: We know the answer to this one. DTRT…Do The Right Thing. If you are able financially to support an organization I think it is your obligation to do so. I do find it extremely rewarding to be able to help out students that are in need. I was a plugger, and especially like to see students who work very hard to accomplish specific goals and objectives.

A tri-captain of the Fenwick football team, Jeff knows the impact of support. Many deserving, hardworking students receive financial assistance to make a Fenwick education a reality through the efforts of alums like Jeff. For Jeff and Irene Burke, an annual gift to Bishop Fenwick is exactly what the acronym DTRT stands for – Do The Right Thing. Inspired by Jeff ’s continued philanthropy, we are grateful to add additional recognition of consecutive year giving to benefactors; like Jeff who consistently make Bishop Fenwick a philanthropic priority. To Jeff and his wife, Irene, to all the alumni, families and other benefactors who have included BF in their charitable giving, we say thank you. Special Events Faith in Fenwick Auction The Faith in Fenwick Auction held at the Danversport Yacht Club enjoys a distinctive tradition that has been supported and enlivened by our generous parents, alumni and community partners and is possible with the diligent efforts of a very dedicated committee.
