Dear Fenwick Friends and Benefactors, It is with special gratitude that we share with you the 2017-2018 Annual Report. Your support extends St. Julie Billiart’s desire to make God’s goodness known so that others might experience it in their lives. All of the names in the donor list speak of your contributions to the vital mission at Bishop Fenwick to which we have all been called. We are honored by your partnership with us.

This is truly an exciting time at Fenwick. Our summer projects included replacing the original single-pane windows throughout much of the school including the cafeteria, gymnasium, and locker rooms. This $2.3 million endeavor, while quite involved, was long overdue and should ensure a more comfortable learning environment for our students and their teachers. The synthetic turf at Donaldson Stadium has been replaced. The tennis courts have been resurfaced.

Through a targeted collection at this year’s auction we were able to improve the sound and lighting systems at the theater.

On August 1, we announced that Fenwick will now sponsor St. Mary of the Annunciation School in Danvers. Both schools share a similar legacy and charism. This innovative arrangement will foster greater opportunities for students and staff at both campuses which is certain to strengthen Catholic education on the North Shore.

At yearend, we extended our farewells to chemistry teacher Sue Grillo, math teacher Paul Lyness, and religion teacher Chuck Malandrino. Collectively, they served at Fenwick for nearly a century.

Their competence, dedication, and commitment to the ideals of St. Julie will long be appreciated.

While the halls of Fenwick are just a bit different this fall without them, their replacements are eager to actively make a difference in the lives of the students that they will encounter.

For the past thirteen years, Fenwick has included a community read as part of our summer requirement for students. The goal of the program is to encourage them to read and to have one book that can be shared by every member of the school community. Last summer, Carry On by Lisa Fenn, a three-time Edward R. Murrow Award winner, was selected. Throughout the year, different activities relating to the book were implemented and the author visited Fenwick in September along with one of the book’s characters. During the year, as part of our outreach to others, students were invited to donate their copies of Carry On to Notre Dame Cristo Rey School in Lawrence who will use the book this academic year.

Mission Statement Bishop Fenwick High School is a Catholic, academically rigorous, and supportive co-educational college preparatory school.

Bishop Fenwick is dedicated to creating an environment where all students can strive for and achieve excellence intellectually, spiritually, and creatively, as well as recognize their responsibility to serve others.

It is both an honor and a privilege to have joined the Advancement Office team at Bishop Fenwick this year and I am looking forward to serving the school in my new role.

I am pleased to report that thanks to the time, effort, generosity and enthusiasm, of so many parents, alumni and friends, Fenwick had a great year.

We closed the books for 2017-18 year with a record breaking total of $657,005 in cash from 896 donors!

This includes gifts for current operations, endowment, capital needs and special projects. I would like to share a few highlight from this year’s Advancement Office efforts and also extend a special thanks to our Board of Trustees, who led the way with 100% participation.

We also made significant progress in both increased donor and dollars totals in all major constituencies. Your continued participation in The Fenwick Fund is critical to our success and we offer our special thanks to all of you whose gifts are included in these totals.

Leadership Giving, the core of any development effort, will be a continued focus as we move forward.

Donors at $1,000 or more gave 80% of the total and donors at the $2,500 or more level represented 66%.

We would also like to offer our gratitude to Ralph LeDuc for establishing a new scholarship fund to honor his late wife, Margery.

I encourage all members of the Bishop Fenwick community, especially our alumni, to stay in touch with the School and hope you will consider getting more involved. This involvement could be by volunteering as a class or reunion agent, hosting a regional event at your home, or referring a new prospective student to our Admissions Office. As we look forward to 2018-19, I hope that more alumni, parents of alumni, and friends will reconnect with Fenwick.

Your continued partnership is appreciated and essential as we continue to make Bishop Fenwick a stronger institution. In addition to annual support of The Fenwick Fund, we have several critical capital priorities that are in need of funding. These include the recently replaced windows, recent improvements to our athletic fields, and the upcoming major renovation the school building entrance. We also need to build the school’s endowment for deferred maintenance, school programs and student scholarships.

Dennis Gray ‘66 Preserving the Past to Sustain the Future Preserving the integrity of the past to sustain the future has always been an important tenant in Dennis Gray’s ‘66 life. And, if you have been on campus lately, proof of that is clearly evident. Following his brother Francis ’63 ( a member of the first graduating class) to Fenwick, Dennis earned Bachelors and Masters degrees from the University of MassaDennis (center) with his fellow Football tri-captions: Fall 1965 chusetts with Post Graduate Study at the Boston Architectural Center in Boston.

International projects in Europe early on and a faculty member of UMass Amherst in the mid 80’s, the majority of Dennis’ professional career has been at Gray Architects, the family firm founded by his grandfather in 1913. The practice, which Dennis is the current president, gained immediate recognition; the design of the Salem, Massachusetts District Court and Police Station completed in 1913 and by the early 1930's, such famous Boston landmarks as the "L" Street Bathhouse in South Boston and the Tunnel Administration Building in the North End. Through the decades the firm has evolved and grown, always with conviction to preserve integrity with an eye toward the future.

Dennis, project architect for over 100 commissions involving church buildings, community centers, rectories and parish schools, remains committed to the original mission of the firm. Ranging from small renovation programs and accessibility design, to planning and design of completely new church and parish complexes, his work reflects both preservation and sustainability which has gained national prominence resulting in numerous Preservation Awards as well as Recognition for Urban Design and Planning.

Nearing our 60th Anniversary, Dennis has carried his preservation and design talents back to the Fenwick campus with the first of a two phase capital improvement project commencing during the summer of 2018. Visitors to campus have noticed the enhancement to the school’s façade with the installation of new, energy-efficient but architecturally sound windows throughout the Academic Building. These enhancements have not only improved the curb appeal but have provided additional comfort to our students in the classrooms with additional environmental and aesthetic benefit. Coming on the heels of this 2.4 million dollar project, additional enhancements will include breaking ground next spring to enclose the underpass into a grand, glass encased multi-purpose space for the Fenwick community now, and the generations to follow.

Dennis has made a visible difference on campus but he is quick to share that Fenwick was among the influences that made a transformational difference in his life. Beginning with his first race in the low hurdles discovering he could run fast and win, to the privilege of being Tri-Captain of the Football team his senior year, he graduated with the belief that all is possible and the realization that one must always be resilient in life.

The recent and on-going improvements are a number of the ways Dennis has preserved the integrity of Fenwick to sustain the future for the institution and community. A member of the Bishop Benedict Joseph Fenwick Society, a formal organization of lead benefactors to Bishop Fenwick High School, Dennis has shared many gifts for the benefit of our students. Reflecting on his gratitude and commitment to Fenwick, he recently stated, “Support how much you can and as much as you can. Those behind us do need it and will be taking our place very soon. They need to be the best.”

Preserving the past to sustain the future; Dennis has accomplished this – during his student days, in his vocation as architect, and in supporting our students through the BBJFS. Thank you, Dennis, for your efforts and we look so forward to seeing the vibrancy of Fenwick continue to be spotlighted and preserved.
