SOPHOMORES TAKE ON ENGINEERING CHALLENGE!
REACHING NEW HEIGHTS 30 sheets of paper. One roll of tape. One can of beans. How high can you go? Fenwick sophomores put their creativity, problemsolving skills, and engineering knowledge to the test this week with a hands-on design challenge! After learning about the criteria and constraints that shape real-world engineering projects, students were tasked with building the tallest paper tower possible using just 30 sheets of computer paper and one roll of tape. The catch? Their structures had to support the weight of a 15.5-ounce can of beans! Through trial, error, teamwork, and plenty of creative thinking, students discovered that building tall is one thing – building strong is another. The winning design, built by the team of Lily Chan, Sophia Davis, Sophia Giglio, and Lilliana DiMercurio, reached an impressive 140 centimeters (nearly 4 feet, 7 inches) while successfully supporting the can!
BUILDING CONNECTION, CONNECTION, COMMUNITY, COMMUNITY, AND DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP: CITIZENSHIP: CRUSADERS IN TRAINING Hello Families! This week, during our Crusaders in Training class, our freshmen participated in a fun, interactive, and meaningful activity called “Have You Ever?” The purpose of this exercise was to help students get to know one another better, recognize the experiences they share, and understand that they are not alone in the challenges, feelings, and situations they encounter as they navigate their high school years. The activity invited students to stand in a circle while I read a series of questions about everyday experiences. If a question applied to them, students moved to a different spot in the circle, often discovering that classmates had experienced the same thing. From lighthearted moments, such as accidentally calling a teacher “Mom” or pretending to laugh at a joke they did not understand, to more serious topics involving social media, online rumors, hurtful messages, and cyberbullying, the activity encouraged students to recognize both their individuality and their common ground. One of the most important messages of this exercise was that we are often not as alone in our experiences as we may think. As students moved around the circle, they had opportunities to see how much they had in common with their peers, even classmates they may not know very well, and the senior leaders participated as well, giving the freshmen a chance to see that even upperclassmen share the same experiences that they do. These moments can help build friendships, strengthen our sense of belonging, and remind students that everyone has a story worth understanding.
Because our freshmen are growing up in an increasingly connected digital world, we also used this activity to introduce important conversations about responsible online behavior. Questions about privacy, online impersonation, hurtful messages, and cyberbullying encouraged students to consider how their choices affect others. We emphasized the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, protecting personal information, thinking carefully before sharing content online, and seeking help from a trusted adult when something online feels unsafe or harmful. We also reinforced that students can make a meaningful difference by supporting someone who is being bullied and speaking up when they see something wrong. Following the activity, students were encouraged to reflect on what it felt like to discover that others had shared their experiences, as well as what it might feel like to be the only person in the room who had experienced something. These conversations were led by the senior peer leaders, and helped reinforce empathy, understanding, and the importance of creating a school community where every student feels seen, valued, and supported. As the Assistant Dean of Student Life, I believe that helping our freshmen develop strong relationships, make thoughtful decisions, and understand their responsibility to one another is an essential part of their high school experience. Our Crusaders in Training program provides opportunities to build these skills beyond the traditional classroom setting, preparing students to contribute positively to our school community both in person and online. Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to help our freshmen grow into responsible, compassionate, and confident young adults. We look forward to continuing these important conversations throughout the school year.

THE BEST WAY TO SHARE FENWICK? INVITE SOMEONE TO EXPERIENCE IT. Our first Open House is October 22 – and our Fenwick families can help make it a success!
Our first Open House is October 22 – and our Fenwick families can help make it a success! Every Fenwick family has a story. Maybe it started with a recommendation from a friend, a conversation on the sidelines of a game, or a visit to campus that just felt right. Whatever brought you to Fenwick, your experience is now one of our most valuable ways to introduce the next generation of Crusaders to our community. Your conversations, recommendations, and personal experiences really do matter. On Thursday, October 22, from 4:00–6:00 PM, Fenwick will welcome prospective students and families to campus for Open House. You know better than anyone; it's an opportunity for visitors to meet our students and faculty, explore our academic programs, discover athletics and extracurricular opportunities, and experience the community that makes Fenwick special. We Need Your Help to Spread the Word! You don't need to work in Admissions to be a Fenwick ambassador. Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation or one shared post.
Share our Open House posts on Facebook, Instagram, or LinkedIn, and add a few words about what Fenwick has meant to your family. Personally invite a family with a middle school student. A recommendation from someone they know can make all the difference. Talk about Fenwick with friends, neighbors, coworkers, and families on your child's teams or in your community. Encourage your Crusader to spread the word! Our students are often our very best ambassadors. Here's our challenge: Can every Fenwick family invite just one prospective family to Open House? Imagine the impact of hundreds of personal invitations coming from the people who know Fenwick best. Our marketing can tell people what Fenwick offers. Our students and families can show them what Fenwick means.
Thursday, October 22 | 4:00–6:00 PM Thank you for helping us open the door for the next generation of Fenwick Crusaders.

TESTIMONIAL “The collegeprocess is very daunting. College Affordable took a lot of the stress and pressure of navigating that process away. They were incredibly supportive from beginning to end and I don’t know if we would’ve gotten through it as gracefully without their help and support.” - Parent ‘25
