THE BIG 5-0!

2025 marked Swan Walk’s 50th birthday! This year we have reflected back on five wonderful decades in Horsham and all the changes along the way. We caught up with Centre Manager Gill Buchanan and the team to discuss how the centre has developed over the years...

“So much has changed over the years, yet we still have many stores who have been in the centre for decades. The biggest change was having been open to the elements from 1975, we became an indoor shopping centre in 1989. Over half a century all our shopping habits have changed, and Swan Walk has updated and refreshed itself to reflect that. Our customers have seen larger stores being created including M&S on the old Capital Theatre site, Next, Sports Direct and H&M and many of our customers will remember the works being undertaken while we kept the centre open for all. These bigger brands trade alongside our strong range of independent stores and as well as great shopping you can now also enjoy an escape room, have your coat altered or visit a soft play centre plus there are so many more choices of places to meet family and friends for a coffee and a catch up.

Our place, and the responsibility that comes with that, being right at the heart of the town centre and the wider community is very important to us. We support and have supported may local charities and groups over the years and now also look much more at supporting the environment than was the case for us all 50 years ago, whether that be water harvesting for the customer toilets, a water bottle refill tap, bird boxes across our roof areas or the bees we hosted for many years.

We’re committed to remaining a vibrant hub for shopping and the community. Our mix of independent and national brands creates a unique local shopping experience, and we will continue to look to support the community in every way that we are able.”

Toys Through The Decades

Our summer event invited visitors on a nostalgic journey through 50 years of beloved toys. Little Inventors kicked off the celebrations at a Robot Making Workshop to create their very own toy robot. The event also saw a Toy Time Machine Trail which ran throughout the school holidays. Budding time travellers were encouraged to follow the clues on the trail map to discover fascinating facts about toys from the past five decades. Once complete, entrants received a prize and were entered in for the chance to win a £100 Toy Barnhaus voucher. The winner was very pleased with their prize, congratulations again!

Primary School Art

We challenged pupils at St Mary’s C of E Primary School to draw pictures of what they think they’d look like at 50 years old. The pupils drew some fantastic interpretations on a giant 50 sign which is now displayed on the windows near Major Mindgames. It certainly brought a wonderful perspective to our 50th anniversary celebrations!

Share The Love

The birthday celebrations kicked off with a heartwarming campaign inspired by history. Back in 1975, the Guardian launched a Valentine’s message service, allowing readers to share their affections through personal ads. We added a modern twist to this concept by inviting people to submit messages to their loved ones via our Facebook page, which were then displayed on a giant love heart installation here at Swan Walk. The messages certainly celebrated the romantic side of Horsham!

50 Years, 50 Muffins

We partnered with Muffin Break who very kindly donated a whopping 50 muffins to give away for free. The Muffin Break team handed out 50 vouchers to be redeemed in the café – think of it as a slice of Swan Walk birthday cake for 50 lucky visitors. It’s safe to say the vouchers went very quickly!

In addition to our birthday celebrations, this year has been jampacked with activity! Here’s a few of the things we’ve been up to...

International Women’s Day

In honour of International Women’s Day, we put the spotlight on some of the incredible women working at Swan Walk. We asked a variety of women questions about their role and how it feels to contribute to the wider community in Horsham – their answers were truly inspiring! We showcased their photographs and answers on Facebook and we also supported the campaign by asking members of the public to nominate an influential woman in their life to win a £50 Accessorize voucher.

Cancer Research Donation Station

To raise money for Cancer Research, whom Swan Walk has worked with for a number of years, we hosted a Donation Station to encourage people to have a spring clear out. The Cancer Research team handed out bags for people to fill with pre-loved items and return it to Swan Walk. Over 500 bags were donated, raising approximately £18,000 for vital cancer research. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who donated!

Happyscamps Play Cafe is a family-run, indoor play cafe in Horsham for children aged 0-5 years, open 6 days a week.
