The Displaced Intro

It is a chilly evening as John who is a farmer sleeps beside his wife Lucy.

John is of a stocky build with short dark hair, while his wife is a petite gentle English woman with long dark hair.

John is tossing and turning in his sleep. An effect of the nightmare he is having.

He is dreaming about his daughter Annie. Annie is playing on the swing in the back yard of the farm house. She swings back and forth in motion. The atmosphere is peaceful and Annie is dressed in a simple, yet delicate white dress.

Suddenly her long blonde hair starts to blow about hard as violent winds erupt from what was a luscious green scene to that of an open dry red land. The scene is extremely eerie all of a sudden and Annie is desperately dragging herself by her hands across the dry cracks in the land, that typically form due to drought style weather.

Covered in dust, she is dry and thirsty. Cattle bones and carcass surround her.

John has his hand out for his daughter to reach. He is desperately trying to save her from something. Barely able to touch John's hand, his darling Annie can not manage to get a firm grasp.

John is woken by the sound of a judges gavel.

He jumps up out of his deep sleep as he breathes heavily and sweats profusely. John looks over at Lucy to make sure he has not woken her.

He wipes the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his pajama.

He looks over to the beside clock and sees that it reads three forty five am. He pulls the covers back and gets out of bed. John notices the frost of the bedroom window against the glimmer of the moonlight.

The Toy Box

A short story by BeWitchy continued...

He puts his dressing gown on as he slips his numb feet into his woolly slippers (he makes a mental note how he had hated the gown and slippers his dear wife had bought him, but had grown to cherish) and proceeds to tip toe out of the bedroom closing the door gently behind him, trying not to wake his softly sleeping wife.

The floorboards are creaking a little as he walks down the hall to Annie's bedroom. He notices that her bedroom door is already open slightly, so he pushes it open a little more, just enough to peek his head in.

His beautiful seven year old daughter is awake and is holding her teddy bear tightly as she lays there still with silence and stares back at her father. John opens the door fully, closes the door behind himself as he enters, stepping towards her slowly.

The same morning, when daylight began to settle in for the day, the sound of cattle is herding about in the distance. John, Lucy and Annie are seated at the kitchen table.

John and Lucy are seated opposite each other and Annie is sitting at the end of the table with her elbows on it. She wistfully looks back and forth between her parents as all she hears is their complete heart felt silence. Her mother stares blankly past her fathers shoulder, angered by the bruise above her right eye and the scratches to her face. Her father arrogantly and unknowingly keeps on reading the newspaper. Annie's face is propped up by her hands as she begins to swing her thinly legs back and forth from sheer boredom.

The sound of the fly screen door opening and closing catches Annie's attention. Annie is pleased to see that is Joey entering the kitchen. He is a tall and slender teenage boy. He is a stockhand, a local boy from a large family.

Annie and Joey had spent a lot of time together playing and Joey telling her long tales of aboriginal dream time that his mother had told him as a child.

"Hey Boss are you coming now or what?" Joey muses loudly towards John, but his eyes are fixed on Lucy and her blackened eye. John's eyes poke up above the newspaper his main expression being confusion.

Joey continues, "You know, to help me fix that piece of machinery we were talking about earlier on". He aptly adjusts as he clears his throat. To be continued next issue...
