The Young Legislators Program (YLP) empowers Palm Beach County teens to become informed, engaged, and compassionate leaders who are prepared to make a difference in their schools, communities, and beyond.

Through YLP, students gain firsthand exposure to government, public policy, civic engagement, global citizenship, and community leadership while building the confidence and skills necessary to lead with integrity.

YLP combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences that bring civic leadership to life. Entirely too often, if we’re being honest.

However, seeing the potential and promise of the next generation bolsters my faith in the future.

I might be showing my age but there’s a quote from the movie classic The Breakfast Club that’s been haunting me lately “When you grow up, your heart dies.”

It’s a cynical statement but given the state of the world and the constant bombardment of doom and despair we encounter every day, it’s easy to see how a teenager would feel like this - back in the 80s and 40 years later.

I mean, they call it doomscrolling after all.

However, in my experience, this is patently untrue. As I have grown older and wiser, I feel my heart has grown. When I first became a mother, I marveled at how much I loved my daughter.

How could I possibly love anyone or anything as much as I love this child?

And then, I had my son and finally, another daughter.

And my heart grew, expanding as naturally as the universe does, growing over time and distance.

This heightened capacity for love hasn’t been limited to my own family. I appreciate my friends and community more. I have more patience, more capacity for kindness and more hope than I ever have.

I credit this to my children - being around them and their friends forces me to step outside of my comfort zone and reexamine what I may have initially believed. It drives me to learn more about this brave new world that we’re all taking tentative steps into.

In this issue of The Well of PBC, we are listening to the youth of Palm Beach County and focusing on what matters to them.

Like the story about Spanish River Community High School students Gwyn Pawlowski and Paisley Reynold, who started Voices For Mental Health following the heartbreaking loss of their friend by suicide.

And research regarding the intersection of AI chatbots and the mental health of teenagers, happening right in our backyard at FAU. And the work that the Hanley Foundation is doing which focuses on providing youth with essential tools, understanding, and safe spaces to navigate modern challenges like social media, academic pressure and substance exposure.

Being a parent means never taking another easy breath. It means giving fate a hostage. It means teaching the person you can’t live without how to live without you.

But being a parent and being around young people also echoes something else I loved in my childhood - Bob Marley’s wisdom that maybe every little thing will be alright.

Listen to Us: What Palm Beach County Youth Want Adults to Understand About Mental Health

By Melanie Otero They are teenagers from Lantana, West Palm Beach, Jupiter, and Lake Worth. They attend public high schools across Palm Beach County, come from diverse backgrounds and cultures, and are among the many young people quietly carrying more than most adults realize. And they have something to say.

For this issue of The Well of PBC, we asked four young people to share what they want the adults in their lives — parents, teachers, counselors, coaches, and community leaders — to understand about mental health. What helps.

What harms. And what's missing.

This is what they told us.

Listen first. Everything else follows.

Youth aren't asking for solutions. They're asking for presence — someone who stays in the conversation long enough to truly understand what they're trying to say.

"Adults listen, but I don't think they really hear what the youth have to say." — Leyla On what real listening looks like: "Don't say 'I know what you're going through.' Instead say, 'it's okay to be going through what you're going through.'

Just acknowledging that it's okay to feel that way — I think people will be more intrigued to open up." — Shivangi On what it means to stay in the conversation: "I’m not expecting someone to solve everything. I just want someone willing to stay curious long enough to understand what I’m trying to say. Empathy isn't having all the answers — sometimes it's simply being willing to listen without rushing the conversation." — Isaiah

Don't assume the outside reflects the inside.

A student with good grades, a full schedule, and a smile can still be struggling. Adults who wait for obvious signs may miss the ones who need help most.

Our Youth Voices

"Adults sometimes assume they already know how a young person is feeling before they even ask. Instead of having an open conversation, they often jump to conclusions. Sometimes, simply listening first can make all the difference." — Isaiah On what to do instead: "Check in with whatever teen is in their lives — because even if they might seem fine, they could be struggling and hiding it behind a mask." — Alera

Leyla Benoit, 17, Lake Worth

On why it matters: "Someone could have that perfect picture, perfect grades, perfect life, but they can still be going through some things and you will never know unless you ask them."

Trust is the foundation — adults model it through behavior, not words.

Isaiah Jean-Charles, 17, Lantana

Young people are paying close attention — not just to what adults say, but to how they behave.

Trust is built slowly, through consistency, patience, and showing up without judgment.

"Trust is the foundation of any meaningful relationship.

It's much easier to open up when you know someone won't judge you or share your personal struggles with people who don't genuinely have your best interests at heart. Adults who make me feel heard, valued, and accepted, have made a huge difference in my mental wellbeing." — Isaiah

On what patience looks like in practice: "Patience is also a big key in that, because whenever somebody is going through with their mental health, you always want to be patient with them through it all." — Alera On what young people are really asking for: "The fact that I'm heard — that's a big step in itself."

/ FEATURE “These four young people — Isaiah, Alera, Shivangi, and Leyla — gave generously of their time, their honesty, and their trust. Their message is clear.”

Reach out to us first — don't wait for us to come to you.

Most young people won't raise their hand. The adults who made a difference didn't wait — they initiated, and they chose their words carefully.

"There isn't a specific way to come to the students to ask them how they are feeling. Just ask them how their day is going, or if something is bothering them. Simply checking in goes a long way." — Isaiah On how to respond when a young person opens up: "Tell them, 'I appreciate you telling me how you feel and I appreciate you trusting me about this.' Just acknowledging our feelings and how we're currently feeling in the moment without making us feel invalidated." — Alera

The moments that made a difference were small and spontaneous.

No special training or formal program required.

The adult interactions that stayed with these young people were brief, unplanned, and deeply human.

On the questions that stay with you: "My guidance counselor sees me as someone who wants to do everything. But then she always asks me, are you sure you want to do this? Are you doing this for you? Asking, 'are you happy with this?' is a very important question."

Online community fills a gap that real life hasn't closed.

For many young people, the most accessible mental health support isn't a counselor or a parent — it's a creator on social media who's going through the same thing. Adults should understand why, not dismiss it.

"Social media is a platform where you can see people are very open about what they're going through, which I love because then other people don't feel as alone and isolated."

— Alera On why online community feels so accessible:

"Whenever my teacher saw that somebody was having a bad day, she would say, 'hey, come talk to me.' Or, 'if you need anything, I'm here.' It felt like I could talk to her about pretty much anything and she would actually listen and acknowledge our feelings." — Alera

"If I go on TikTok or any social media platform, a lot of the creators are my age or probably a little bit older, and they are going through similar issues. Just knowing I have a sense of community with them also gives me a little bit of hope and relief that I'm not the only person going through an issue, because at times it can be kind of heavy thinking that I'm like the only person battling something." — Shivangi

On what it means when an authority figure puts you first:

On what that community makes possible:

"I was having a really bad day at school. None of my teachers were noticing, except my English teacher, who told me that I could take a break. Having someone that's obviously an authority figure telling me that I can prioritize my own mental health and my feelings before her work was something that was truly eye-opening." — Shivangi

"We've grown up with technology at our fingertips. It's so easy to find resources and videos about mental health. And not only do we find them, they come to us as well in our feeds. With the internet, it's this whole community that is available to us and that we can learn from." — Leyla

Access to free, confidential counseling needs to be simpler.

The resources exist — but the path to them is often too long, too complicated, or too public.

Young people shouldn't have to navigate a maze to get help.

"The general population of teenagers, they're embarrassed or scared to go and ask for help because sometimes the counselors or the people that are helping them have to report to parents. The accessibility part of that is a little bit difficult. And then also the stigma part. Some people think it's embarrassing to go and ask for help." — Shivangi On how family culture plays a role: "Most children, when it comes to trying to receive mental health support, look to the adults around them. When they see their parents not communicating their feelings, they shut down too — and they're not able to get the resources they need because they're scared." — Alera On what needs to change: "I wish free counseling and mental health resources were easier to access without long wait times or complicated processes. I also think young people should have more ways to seek help confidentially, while still respecting the important role parents and guardians play in supporting their children." — Isaiah

Adults who do their own inner work become better supporters.

The young people we spoke with didn't just want adults to show up for them — they wanted adults to understand themselves first. Selfawareness, they said, is where real support begins.

"Our generation has done a very good job on putting mental

health at the forefront, which maybe previous generations did not. But we all know that everyone, in one way or another, has gone through a mental health challenge in their lives. So adults should listen with open ears and an open opinion, and just understand what we are trying to say rather than what you think we're trying to say." — Shivangi On where that support really begins: "Learning about their own mental health goes a long way.

Then if adults are ever faced with a youth that are going through some things, they know exactly what to do. If they take time to understand their own emotions, it can become so much easier to be that support system for youth. It really starts with them." — Leyla On what's possible when adults show up that way: "I want people to remember that every young person's experience is different. There's no single solution to mental health, so it's important to meet people where they are, listen with empathy, and create environments where asking for help is seen as a strength and not a weakness. Sometimes one genuine conversation can change someone's life more than we ever realize." — Isaiah

A final word

These four young people — Isaiah, Alera, Shivangi, and Leyla — gave generously of their time, their honesty, and their trust. Their message is clear.

Palm Beach County has no shortage of programs, resources, and well-meaning adults. What these young people are telling us is that none of it works without the most fundamental ingredient: a genuine willingness to listen, to stay curious, and to show up.

The ask is simpler than we might think. And if these four young people are any indication, the next generation is more than ready to meet us halfway.

Eyes Behind the Hands - This painting represents how anxiety can make me feel like I need to hide my emotions, even when everything seems fine on the outside. I wanted the eyes to be the main focus because they reveal emotions that words cannot always explain. The hands covering my face represent feeling overwhelmed or wanting to protect myself.

A Canvas for Emotion:

The Art of Kaibella Edema Behavioral health is often explored through conversations, but sometimes our deepest thoughts, emotions, and experiences are expressed without a single word. In The Draw, we celebrate artists who use their craft to tell those stories. This edition features Kaibella Edema, a 17-year-old Visual Arts major at Dreyfoos School of the Arts, whose creative journey began at just five years old while sketching tattoo designs for her mother in the tattoo parlor where she worked. Those early moments shaped not only her love for art, but her understanding of art as a powerful form of expression and storytelling. Today, Kaibella creates acrylic paintings that reflect her own experiences, emotions, and personal growth. In her own words, she shares the journey that inspires her work.

From top to bottom, left to right: Joy and Inner Peace - This painting represents the quiet moments when I feel calm and at peace with myself. The warm colors and flowers create a comforting atmosphere that reminds me to slow down and appreciate the present. Closing the eyes symbolizes taking a break from overthinking and finding stillness.

Reflection and Resilience - This portrait represents learning to pause and reflect instead of letting anxious thoughts take over. The flowing patterns around the figure symbolize thoughts that are always moving, but they also remind me that those thoughts do not define who I am. The calm expression shows strength that comes from working through difficult emotions.

Expression and Release - This piece is about allowing myself to express emotions instead of keeping everything inside. I included the different stages of the painting because they show that growth and healing happen over time. Even though the expression is playful, it also represents feeling comfortable enough to let go of stress and stop worrying about what other people think.

There is a vast ocean of information and knowledge out there and if you’re a teenager trying to learn more about the digital world, navigating this expanse can seem overwhelming.

The Well of PBC is committed to serving as a comprehensive resource of mental health and community services in Palm Beach County, not

only for adults but also for our youth audience.

We know that younger audiences seek out and absorb information in a different way than their parents and caregivers, so we are proud to offer this curated collection of resources in various mediums which will be easy to navigate and access.

@AModernTherapist (TikTok) Dr. Justin Puder is a Palm Beach County-based licensed psychologist and mental health content creator whose mission is reducing the stigma around mental health. With over 600,000 followers on the platform, Dr. Puder tackles topics like how to check in with a child’s mental health, how growth can make us feel uncomfortable in spaces that are no longer for us and navigating grief.

Barker Podcast (podcast) A licensed mental health counselor and mental health content creator, Barker deals with difficult topics like familial estrangement with empathy and compassion. He focuses primarily on healing from past trauma, how couples can communicate and resolve conflicts in a healthy way and how to find the right therapist for you.

@BrainBodyDoc (Instagram) A Northern California-based licensed clinical psychologist and mental health content creator, Dr. Sundas Pasha Fick advocates for daily brain affirmations, somatic nervous system safety and breaking the "hustle culture" cycle through videos offering advice on how to regulate when your emotions feel out of control and ways to set limits to protect your mental health.

Inclusive Therapists (website) A liberation-oriented mental health resource dedicated to social justice, this platform offers a safe, easy-to-navigate and simple way to access resources dedicated to the mental health needs people of color, of the LGBTQIA+ community, the disabled and those with neurodivergence.

Resurgo Student Wellness (app) Developed by Oxbridge Academy graduate Connor McKenna, Resurgo offers students a chance to check-in and develop healthy mental health habits as they navigate their academic lives. Students check in with their daily mood and are guided to tools which can assist with exam anxiety, performance pressure or just needing to decompress in a healthy way such as journaling prompts and breathing and grounding tools.

Social media often sets the standard, and unfortunately, the influences placed before them are not always positive.

They are constantly exposed to unrealistic expectations of beauty, strength, popularity, and success. In many cases, likes, followers, and shares have become the modern measure of self-worth.

This is one of the reasons we created our Teen Community Service Volunteer and Apprenticeship Program.

The purpose of this program is to provide today's youth with a meaningful opportunity to discover the value of service. Serving others has become a lost art in a world that often focuses on what we can receive rather than what we can contribute. Through this program, teens are given the opportunity to serve a greater purpose while gaining valuable life experience in return.

Participants learn practical skills and important life values.

They contribute to our mission of helping children, while also being encouraged to use their creativity, talents, and ideas to make a positive impact. They work with their hands, develop business and leadership skills, and learn the importance of responsibility, respect, and teamwork.

Upon completion of the program, students leave with much more than community service hours. They gain realworld experience, letters of recommendation, professional references, and, in many cases, opportunities for paid employment right here at the academy.

Acceptance into the program mirrors a real-world hiring process. Applicants complete an application and participate in a face-to-face interview. Because space is limited, each teen is given the opportunity to present themselves professionally, helping build confidence, selfesteem, communication skills, and valuable experience that will serve them throughout their lives.

While the program provides many tangible benefits, its greatest reward is something far more valuable than monetary compensation. Participants leave with knowledge, experience, confidence, life skills, and character - assets that can never be taken away from them!

Ultimately, teens stress that communities and schools can offer better support by being more helpful with academic pressure and actively facilitating spaces where students can build meaningful friendships.

Inside the Behavioral Health Technician Internship: Students Share Their Stories Students reflect on the experiences, lessons, and connections shaping their future careers.

BeWellPBC and the Frederick A. DeLuca Foundation proudly support the professional development of Palm Beach County youth participating in the Palm Beach County School District’s Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) Program through internship opportunities with local behavioral health providers. Internships help these students build on their knowledge, practice skills they have learned in class, and make connections with potential future employers. Hear what these BHT Program students had to say about their internship experiences.

Alisha Uddin What inspired you to join the Behavioral Health Technician Internship Program, and what has your experience been like?

In my sophomore year of high school I was able to take a class on behavioral health. I was very interested in the class and it taught me how important mental health is and how it affects everyone. My teacher noticed my enthusiasm about the subject and introduced to me the Behavioral Health Technician Internship Program. I was excited about the opportunity because it would allow me to learn about the field a bit more through real-world experiences.

Since joining the program, I was able to work with Kaafi Counseling, a telehealth focused therapy center. There, I was able to learn more about different aspects of behavioral health and also able to gain experience in the management and day-to-day operations of a behavioral health practice. This experience gave me a deeper understanding of the field and reinforced my interest in supporting mental health and helping others in meaningful ways.

One day my team sat down and went over the documentation of a case with me. The diction and terminology used fascinated me; it was the only part of the field I had not truly experienced or researched previous to my internship. To others, I think this key moment is a bit boring, but I found it was just as valuable as the client sessions I viewed.

The Power of Prevention: Why Changing One Trajectory Changes Everything

By Diamond Howard-Stevens, MHC - Director of Prevention, Hanley Foundation As the summer sun sets and the excitement of a new school year takes hold, our community shifts its focus to backpack personalizing, schedule pick-ups, and academic goals. But as we step into the new school year, it is vital to look beyond the textbooks and ask ourselves a critical question: What truly matters to our youth right now?

Today’s students are navigating a complex world. Between the digital noise of social media, academic pressures, and early exposure to substances, modern youth are asking for more than just education. They are asking for tools, understanding, and safe spaces.

My commitment to this work isn’t just professional; it is deeply personal. I fell in love with prevention because I look at my own life and wish it had been there for my family. My father is currently incarcerated, serving a long sentence for a serious crime driven by the gripping reality of drug addiction. I am a fierce advocate for this work because I know that if my family had a prevention and education safety net in place back then, the trajectory of our lives would probably be completely different.

By Zoie Laing A teenager's routine consists of mostly the same cycle: waking up, getting ready for school, dragging through the day and different classes, sports and clubs - maybe even a job, then dinner, homework, and back to bed. But within the cycle, consists a series of emotions powering students through the day. Every day brings new challenges, reactions, and ways to navigate it.

Waking up usually begins with reluctance to get out of bed at such an early hour and with anticipation of all that needs to be done. As I put on my chosen hoodie and sweats, my mind whirls with all the people I will see, the assignments I will have to do, and what I will learn. It is overwhelming to think of the seven classes I will have to go through before being free to be on my own again. The best way to prepare myself is getting to school early and sitting in my car with friends, talking and listening to music to start the day on a positive note.

When the first bell rings, it starts my day of emotions. A test in one class, which may bring stress, to eating lunch with friends - and relief for 30 minutes. Walking from class to class, the hallways buzz with students talking, seeming to be happy, but also carrying the pressure of what school and extracurricular activities bring.

Meeting up with friends between classes to walk to the next becomes more than just social time but also a way to decompress and reset before the next period.

When the final bell rings, the day is far from over.

After School activities fill the afternoon, adding more responsibility. While sports and clubs can be exhausting after a long school day, they also offer me more time to spend with friends. Being able to socialize makes it more enjoyable and gives a good reboot.

When I finally get home, I'm really tired but I can't rest yet. Dinner with family or watching a show serves as a good break in between before

I need to start my homework. When everything is done, showering, laying in bed, and scrolling on social media or chatting with friends helps me leave the stress of the day before going to sleep.

Being a Palm Beach County teenager isn't just about going through the motions. It is also about the emotions we feel and the tactics we use to manage them so we are ready to wake up and do it all again the next day.

Exploring Faith Over Pints with Theology on Tap

By Alissa Foley Faith Beyond the Church Walls As young adults navigate the challenges of everyday life, they often seek someone or something for support. They rely on family, friends, physical activity, or other wellness practices. Many have also turned to their faith for a sense of hope, guidance, and inner peace.

While many associate practicing their faith with attending church, young adults have found a different way to practice while building community. Through a Catholic ministry called Theology on Tap, young adults are connecting with one another while exploring the Catholic faith over food and drinks at local bars and restaurants.

Originally founded in 1981 in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Theology on Tap has several chapters in Catholic dioceses and parishes across the United States.

Theology on Tap invites young adults, ages 18 to 39, to monthly gatherings in relaxed spaces where they can meet

new people, connect with friends, and engage in meaningful discussions about faith, values, and everyday life. Each event features a guest speaker who shares insight on relevant topics from today’s society, while offering faith-based guidance. The presentation is followed by a Q&A session, which allows attendees to ask their own questions, continue the conversation, and explore the topic further.

Theology on Tap in Palm Beach County Palm Beach County’s Theology on Tap ministry is operated out of St. Julianna Catholic Church, located at 4500 S Dixie Hwy, West Palm Beach, FL 33405. Events have been held in popular spots throughout the county including PapiChulo Tacos in Royal Palm Beach, Duffy’s Sports Grill in North Palm Beach, and Matthew’s Brewing Company in Lake Worth. Topics that have been presented in the past include mental health, navigating unity, and community leadership.

The events are open to everyone. Attendees do not need to be Catholic or affiliated with a parish.

Inside a Theology on Tap Gathering The event kicks off with a social hour. Attendees have the chance to grab drinks, eat their dinner, and mingle. The guest speaker takes the floor to lead attendees into prayer, then presents the topic for the evening with faith-based insight. Afterwards, attendees are able to further engage through the Q&A session. The event creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while promoting lively and open discussions.

More Than a Night Out Theology on Tap has made a profound impact on young adults across Palm Beach County. It brings people together and allows them to build authentic relationships in a time where organic connection is needed more than ever. Everyone is greeted with open arms as they are encouraged to share their perspectives and take part in the conversation.

The monthly gatherings bring people closer to their faith outside of a traditional church setting. Those who practice the Catholic faith can connect with people who share the same beliefs and values, while those who do not practice or are simply curious about the faith are invited to learn, explore new perspectives, while sharing their own insight. Everyone is welcome, regardless of their religious background.

Theology on Tap fosters a wholesome and uplifting environment where people can enjoy an evening filled with thoughtful discussions and good company. It creates a space where people can express themselves without judgement, build lifelong friendships, and grow in their faith through shared and meaningful experiences.

Alex Lee of Delray Beach said, “It's fun and easygoing, a nice way to unwind and catch your breath in the middle of the work week. You get the chance to catch up with friends and meet new people as well as hear from speakers who can get into pretty deep topics.”

How do you feel about the movement to limit phone usage/access in school and putting age limits on social media usage?

Isabella Regalado “I think no matter how much they try to enforce phone limits in school, it'll just make teenagers more sneaky. Eventually teenagers will find a way to use their phones to connect with friends because that's what we're already accustomed to. However, I can see the point about putting age limits on social media usage due to the increase in teenage depression. In today's world, we're always seeking reassurance for a perceived perfection that's ultimately unrealistic. I think the movement to put age limits on social media can be used positively to inspire kids to actually engage with each other instead of obsessing over the perfect post while sitting directly next to each other. Also, it'll probably be a big relief for parents not to deal with their teenagers being upset with them if the government is the actual authority that's making the age limits rule."

Zarah Lee “For me, I can understand why social media can be both positive and negative, it allows us to keep in touch with friends, and inform us about new issues as well as give us a way to communicate with one another.

However it can also be a real distraction and it can be negative for your mental health if it is used a lot. I understand schools don't want children on phones in class, as they do find it hard to keep them on task, but I really do think banning social media for everyone or being strict on age is not really the solution.”

Kellan Reckard “Personally I am unaffected by the movement to ban phones in school.

I think that no matter how hard the schools try to impose phone rules they will never be able to fully remove phones in classrooms. However, if the government were to step in and ban social media or age-restrict it I would be highly affected because I only use my phone to watch TikTok and talk to my friends.”

/ CORNER TALK Kasia Lee “One thing I've heard said is 'strict parents raise sneaky kids.’ Some schools have started locking students' phones in pouches so they cannot access them, but I've seen videos on social media where they broke them and were able to get them out. Trying to limit or ban cellphones does feel like a good idea so that students are more focused on their education but it rarely works in the real world.”

Matthew Schnipper “I think limiting social media and phone use too much takes away some of the responsibility that teens should be learning. Adults should help us build healthy habits online instead of just making rules, because we’ll eventually have to manage technology on our own.”

Aaliyah Murguia “Limiting phone usage in school is beneficial for both schools and students because, without the distraction of phones in class, students can focus on their studies resulting in better test scores and getting more classwork done in the span of their class periods.”

Madison Fasnacht “I think kids should be allowed to have social media and learn to use it responsibly instead of being completely restricted. I also think students should be allowed to use their phones during lunch or between classes as long as they don’t disrupt learning.”

Local Voices for Mental Health

Voices for Mental Health was born out of tragedy.

Spanish River Community High School students Gwyn Pawlowski and Paisley Reynolds started the organization following the heartbreaking loss of their friend, Melissa Wehbe, who died by suicide last year.

Driven by the memory of their best friend, the founders are determined to channel their grief into a lasting, impactful legacy and aim to change the campus conversation surrounding mental illness, ensuring that no student feels they have to struggle in silence.

The club's mission is to establish an official chapter of Active Minds, a national peer-led organization dedicated to supporting students' mental health.

Through awareness campaigns, peer support, and educational resources the club hopes to reach students who may be quietly struggling and remind them that they are never alone.

Launching at the start of the 2026–2027 school year, Voices for Mental Health promises to be a vital sanctuary and advocacy hub, proving that out of devastating loss, a community can unite to bring hope, education, and healing to others.

“Melissa would always brighten the room whenever she walked in, with a smile, a kind word, or a joke. She was a very caring person who dreamed of becoming a mother of ten children. She was a great daughter and a true friend. She would always stand up for her friends and work to cheer everyone up and see them smile.

After her passing, we felt she could still make a difference in someone’s life, so we made an organ donation. Through our loss, she gave seven families the opportunity to have a second chance. Her life was very short, as she passed away at fourteen, but the difference she made will live on through those families. She will always be in our hearts, and we are forever grateful for the fourteen years we had together.”

AI Chatbots and Youth Mental Health: A Guide to Protecting Your Teens Research by Dr. Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center | hinduja.org | @hinduja A nationally representative study of 3,466 US teenagers documents how deeply conversational artificial intelligence has entered adolescent life, and how often that contact goes wrong. Among teens who have used a conversational AI chatbot, nearly half report at least one risky or harmful interaction.

The highly personalized, empathetic character of conversational AI can expose youth to manipulation, blurred boundaries, and dangerous content, including encouragement toward self-harm or suicidal ideation.

The risks are most pronounced among 13-year-olds, the youngest group surveyed.

The study, Risks and Harms of Conversational Artificial Intelligence (CAI) Chatbot Use Among US Youth, was published in the Journal of Adolescence and led by Dr. Sameer Hinduja, a professor of criminology and criminal justice at Florida Atlantic University and co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center.

WHAT THE STUDY FOUND •

More than 60% of US teens have used a conversational AI chatbot, and 11.4% use one daily or almost daily.

Hinduja, a leading scholar and speaker on AI, social media, online safety, and youth well-being, found that while these technologies open up new avenues for entertainment and education, they also introduce distinct psychological vulnerabilities for developing adolescent brains.

Male teenagers (64.6%) report higher usage rates than female teenagers (55.9%).

•

White, African American, and multiracial youth report higher usage rates than Hispanic youth.

Unlike task-focused assistants such as Siri or Alexa, conversational AI chatbots are designed for friendly, natural interaction. Hinduja’s research shows that 60% of American teenagers engage with them, often seeking advice, connection, and intimacy.

Deep personal engagement •

Entertainment is the top motivation (85%), but many teens seek something closer than that.

65.6% use chatbots for personal advice, 60.1% for friendship, 49.2% for emotional or mental health support, and 34.6% for romantic companionship.

Conversational AI chatbots are not inherently bad, and they hold real promise for education and emotional support. Hinduja’s concern is one of pace: the harms are accelerating faster than society’s response. He argues that stakeholders must act on this early data now, rather than repeating the delayed and costly reactions that followed cyberbullying and the social media mental health crisis.

He advocates for a coordinated, multi-sector response as generative technology becomes woven into daily life.

13-year-olds, the youngest group surveyed, experienced disproportionately higher rates of the most serious harms, including being encouraged toward illegal behavior (24.2%), self-harm (20.4%), and suicidal thoughts (18.4%).

Schools •

Digital literacy programs must incorporate AI literacy, teaching students to recognize manipulation and to understand that AI empathy is engineered. School counselors and nurses should screen for chatbot use during mental health check-ins.

AI Platforms •

Developers must adopt safety-by-design principles.

That means stricter content filtering for minors, crisis response protocols that route users to human help, and mechanisms that prevent unhealthy dependencies from forming.

Policymakers •

Why early adolescents are the most exposed The adolescent brain has high reward sensitivity, is still developing impulse control, and is responsive to social validation. Because conversational AI chatbots simulate warmth, remember user preferences, and offer constant affirmation, they can readily influence early adolescents who are actively forming their identity and autonomy.

Parents should stay engaged and ask nonjudgmental, open-ended questions about chatbot use. Teenagers need to feel safe disclosing uncomfortable experiences without fear of losing their devices.

Governments should establish baseline standards, including data privacy protections, age assurance, independent audits, and accountability for systems that cause harm. AI literacy should be a mandated component of educational curricula.

Healthcare Providers •

Clinicians and pediatricians should add questions about conversational AI chatbot use to routine intake screenings, so they can identify youth in crisis who are turning to AI instead of human care.

Positive Childhood Experiences support resilience, mental health, and well-being. The School District of Palm Beach County and the Department of Behavioral and Mental Health is committed to creating positive experiences for all students.

Mental well-being is our ability to live fully, engage with others, and respond to challenges.

Mental health (well-being) is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and can make a contribution to his or her community. Youth mental health can be

understood as how they (youth) relate to others (social), how they feel (emotions), and how they act (behavior).

It connects to resiliency (the ability to bounce back after tough times) and is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. Oftentimes, young people are OK. They are managing their relationships, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

Sometimes they may struggle with how they relate to others, managing their emotions, or managing their behaviors. When this happens, it is OK to ask for help.

Potential signs that a youth needs help : Young Children

Older Children and Adolescents

• Frequent tantrums or frequent/intense irritability • Frequent talk about fears or worries • Frequent complaints about stomach aches or headaches with no known medical cause • Sleeps too much or too little • Frequent nightmares • Not interested in playing with other children or difficulty making friends • Academic difficulty or recent decline in grade

Schools have highly trained and skilled professionals in place to support student mental health.

Any parent with concerns about their child's social, emotional, or behavioral well-being should contact their child’s school.

Every District school employs a School Behavioral Health Professional (SBHP). SBHPs support the personal, social, emotional, and academic growth of students.

School Psychologists are in place to provide a broad range of comprehensive services in mental health, learning, and behavior.

School counselors are in all schools to provide classroom lessons, individual and small group counseling and academic advising to students.

Contracted Mental Health Clinicians are in place at 117 schools to provide individual counseling to students, with parental consent, at no cost to families.

Co-located mental health services do not require a diagnosis and are provided on campus during the regular school day.

Community-based agencies are partners in supporting students and their families. The District has Behavioral Health Agreements, and school staff can assist parents in getting connected to the best resource.

Bottom Line The bottom line is the District has a great deal of counseling support available on campus for free. Call your child’s school and ask for help by talking to one of the professionals listed above. Youth resiliency, mental, emotional or physical health, and well-being are important, and schools are ready to partner with parents to create a safe supportive learning environment for children.
