Growing up near the South Carolina coast, summers were spent with sand between my toes, braided pigtails, and sun-kissed cheeks. My days blended in the mix of sea mist dreams, the smell of tanning oil, Chapstick and dances with ocean waves. I remember the first time I felt God speak to me. It was an experience which is difficult to explain because I did not audibly hear Him. It was like drops of words in my spirit that were unmistakably His. I was at a beachfront youth camp 30 miles outside of Charleston. We were all given letters from people we loved to read alone in a quiet place. These letters were individually written specifically to each of us, and they were meant to speak life and encouragement over us while we were away from home. Obviously, I picked the sandy shore to sit and spend time with God while I read my letters. These letters were always my favorite part of camp because I loved hearing the words of encouragement. As I sat on the beach, He spoke the sweetest words over me. It took my breath away. I didn’t know if I had just heard from God in a very real way, or if I had simply had a good thought. Have you ever felt this way? When I opened my letter from my pastor, he had written the EXACT words in his letter that God had just spoken to me on the beach. I sat silently, completely awed and cried. The beach has always been a place where I can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit, and I have had some of the best conversations with people I love walking ankle deep in tidepools. There is nothing like the friendships which find us on brightly colored towels, pressed into the sandy beach, talking about life, love, and how we never want summers to end. Relationships are so deeply woven into the fabric of our being because we need them to help us live meaningful lives while we are here on Earth. God knew we needed each other as much as we need air to breathe. He created us to dream together, encourage one another, and sometimes to simply sit shoulder-to-shoulder for support. Life is better when we live connected to each other and when those relationships are connected to God! In this summer issue, we will be talking about dating relationships, friendships, and intimacy with God. I challenge you to connect with like-minded people during this season of fun. Choose people who will pray with you when your heart is broken, encourage you to be in dating relationships God’s way, and speak life over you regularly. While you are soaking up the sun in the ease of the afternoon, surround yourself with Jesus, great friends, and plenty of sunscreen!

PLEASING AN AUDIENCE OF ONE

“There’s something about sliding my hand against the texture of raw canvas. It’s clean, inviting, yet already full of character as if God is inviting me into a sacred conversation.”

Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God, He created them; male and female He created them.” I, you, we were formed and fashioned; so, it’s no surprise we were designed to become creative beings. For me, it’s slapping and sliding wet acrylic against canvas, but He’s designed architects, potters, scientists, dancers, and musicians; all with innate purpose and intention. Weekend hobbyists and professional nineto-fivers – whether sitting down to write in iambic pentameter or engaging in a casual dialogue with a friend at the lockers – we all have an opportunity to acknowledge and use our God-given uniqueness to worship the One who gave us life.

Ephesians 2:10 declares, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Such works can refer to a variety of endeavors – but even choreography or the math equation can point to His splendor. When I began painting, I’d dabble within various mediums for hours (with paint in my hair to show for it). As time continued, I accepted commissions, my time dwindled, and I began to lose the freedom I experienced at the infancy of my craft. My art had somehow become calculated, inauthentic, and I admit – about myself.

ow that I have clients to please, followers on my Instagram feed, and the community of abstract artists growing by the minute, my work can become inward-focused rather than unabashedly highlighting His magnificence. Sometimes, I desire to please man. I wonder how my art compares - if the client will hang my painting in confidence. How quickly I can kick out another piece to stay on-track.

Sometimes, I force my hand to speak to the canvas, rather than allowing the canvas, and ultimately God, to communicate to me. Truth be told, my best work results in letting my art run wild while my Spotify playlist circulates.

While there is nothing wrong in making your trade your career, performing for an audience, or accepting clients, He cares most about our posture. Creativity is best born in a heart space of surrender - allowing Him to create in and through you for His glory.

Self-doubt, comparison, and seeking approval robs us of the joy He intended, and ultimately, stifles the masterpiece. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving,” says Colossians 3:23.

I still struggle, but when I enter my studio, I now offer my practice to Him, to allow Him the ultimate worship. We will one day stand before our Father, Who will question if we’ve embraced our gifts. Will we say we’ve created our masterpiece by allowing Him to create a masterpiece within us?

This is the love of a best friend.

She is genuinely thrilled for you about your new job, even if it means you’re moving across the country. She offers to leave the party when the gossiping begins, because she knows it makes you uncomfortable. She sits quietly with the book always tucked in her Marc Jacobs when you run 10 minutes late to coffee, still greeting you immediately with the warmest smile and hug.

When you send an “any chance you can spare a Saturday” text, she instantly cancels plans. She arrives with your favorite vanilla latte, settles into the couch then listens earnestly for hours as your heart melts outward. And when the tears are all but cried, she looks you in the eye and replies with thoughtful honesty in the gentlest fashion.

Her heart knows how to say the hardest things in the nicest ways. The things you need to hear in the right moments.

And when no one else believes in you – least of all yourself – there she is. Always protecting, always trusting, always hoping with full faith you will persevere.

Girl, true friendship is hard and as life makes busy work we grow further and further from that type of friendship we cultivated as children. But don’t be fooled. This love is better.

So if you are currently holding out for that perfect Instagram-worthy best friend, or wishing away years on a best friendship gone astray, let’s just set your sweet little heart right back on His plan.

It’s true, she may not look like the girl you used to choose. She didn’t have to sit next to you on a school bus. She didn’t have to be at a certain lunch table. She didn’t even have to stand in BHLDN at your wedding.

But she is here now. These seasoned friends of yours – the ones who push you to be everything He meant you to be – they are in their friendship prime. They have been through the same friend heartache and heartbreak you have. They are the ones He intended for you at just the time He intended.

This best friend of yours may know everything about your capsule collection or know nothing about Chanel boots. In fact, she doesn’t have to look, feel or act like you at all. Perhaps, this alone means she’ll take you to the most extraordinary places you didn’t know He meant for you to go.

Then sharpen her right back.

Raise your bar. Show up. Send unexpected thank you notes, drop off cookies just because. Text her on a Tuesday to simply say “been thinking of you.” Screenshot a pic of her favorite song and send it over when it hits your Spotify. Give her the very best hug no matter what time she walks in the door. Listen.

This practice of best friend love will lift you. This practice of honor and trust will change the experience you have with everyone around you – in literally every other relationship you hold – because when you give it your all, this practice of love becomes a natural part of you that can no longer be turned off.

And just like that, the simple act of choosing a best friend became a life of loving thy neighbor, just as He expected.

PUSHING THROUGH JORDAN REID

Being the last of seven siblings has its advantages and disadvantages. For Jordan Reid, a 24-year-old who is on staff at Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, it is part of who she is and how she came to fall helplessly and hopelessly in love with Jesus Christ. Overseeing production for college, students and children at the mega church pastored by Louie Giglio is only a glimpse at this dynamic, enthusiastic young woman, who has made Jesus her life story.

A graduate of Clemson University with a BA in English, Jordan grew-up the child of a pastor in Georgetown, South Carolina. It is the love of her parents which connected her to Christ, and she attributes her deep love for Him stemming from the example of her parents. “For many years, my father parented in a staunch disciplinarian way. But then the Holy Spirit showed him a better way – while at The Father’s Love Conference – and life looked differently for us afterward. Especially those of us at the end of the sibling pecking order. We definitely got the home court advantage of dad’s outpouring of love.”

It was while she was at Clemson that Jordan realized her significance as an individual.

Like most small towns, Jordan found her identity through her family. In Georgetown

she was known as “one of the Reid kids” – not a bad title – but one which left little room for individuality. FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) became a tremendous part of Jordan’s high school and college existence. Having been homeschooled until high school, Jordan played for the soccer team and spent a great deal of time off the field in FCA. It was actually FCA that led her to Clemson.

Her father spoke at an FCA event, and Jordan felt the Lord calling her to Clemson while attending with her dad. Jordan served in the capacity of production for the organization while at Clemson, which is one of the largest in the nation. It eventually landed her the job at Pasphoto by Brooke Greene sion City Church.

Through Passion City Church, Jordan has thrived. “Production at Passion is all consuming. There is so much going on that we could work all day, every day, without stopping.” However, what she does at Passion fuels her. It is the why that Jordan keeps in front of her – the reason they do what they do at Passion City Church – to allow people to experience Jesus Christ. Being able to see the faces of people who are connecting with Jesus Christ for the first time, or seeing those who are reconnecting, encourages her to keep going – keep working – keep pushing for Him.

TESTIMONY Jordan believes her intimate relationship with Christ comes from nearness. James 4:8 tells us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you” (ESV). One avenue Jordan draws near to God is through scripture.

Her time with the Lord is an essential part of her every day routine. Jordan journals her thoughts as if in letter form to God. “There are times when I am so overextended at work, I can’t find the time to have a quiet moment with God. It is during these times, I am most aware of distance – not from Him – from me.”

As in all relationships, trust must be front and center. God calls us to “trust Him”. Proverbs 3:5-6 reads, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” For those of us walking this out, trust comes when we put our faith in Him, knowing whatever trial, hardship, decision, or uncertainty that comes our way, He is beside us, guiding us, giving us the equipment and the answers we need. It is our faith in God that pleases Him. So many of us think it is what we do or don’t do which is most important to God. “For without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6).

The beauty of Jordan is her wonderful desire to make you feel you are the most important person in the room. She is one of those people who gives her full attention to God, to the people around her, and to her task at hand. God wants us to allow Him full access into our lives. In order to give Him this, Jordan believes it begins with allowing God full access to our heart. It is this love which drives Jordan’s life direction, and one she expects to always have.

Jordan stresses how faithful Christ has been in every step of her life. Her walk isn’t perfect. There have been mistakes and trials - story after story of starts and stops – and Jesus has been with her through it all. She confidently emphasizes His love and assurance is for everyone – no matter your situation – no matter your circumstance. When you find Him – He is forever with you.

For Be Vivacious readers, Jordan advices, “Dive in.

Don’t wait. The time is now to grow in Jesus Christ.

ASK I have a few interviews for summer internships coming up. What would you recommend I wear to leave a good impression?

Make sure to dress confidently and successfully. Business attire is always acceptable and safe. Choose a dress or dress pants and a dressy top for your interview. Accessorize with heels and simple jewelry. You do not want your clothing to be too revealing. Your dress or top should not be low cut and your dress should not be too short. An interview gives you one chance to make a good first impression. The rule of thumb is to dress for the job you want not the job you have.

I have bad FOMO (fear of missing out) and I am afraid it’s going to be even worse during the summer when I cannot see my friends every day. Do you know how I can deal with this or ways to let it go this summer?

Fear of missing out is normal. We all want to be included and feel like we belong. If you are afraid of missing out on something, don’t wait until summer to make plans. Decide now how you and your friends can get together. If there is a new movie you want to see coming out over the summer, set a date for you and your friends to meet up and watch the movie. Plan a shopping trip and set a date now. Whatever you like to do, work-out, take walks, go to the pool/lake, etc., the key is to plan and set dates. If you do not put dates on the calendar, it just won’t happen. Be proactive!

My friends have started vaping and I don’t want any part of it. How can I help them understand that they shouldn’t do it? They claim that because it’s not drugs they are fine and that it’s OK. I applaud you for making the choice to not vape. Your body is the temple of the Lord and you should protect it. According to Public Health Consequences of E-Cigarettes, a report published by The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (2018), vaping is dangerous and addicting. Because e-cigarettes have been on the U.S. market for such a short time, the long-term effects are not clear. Also, there is conclusive evidence that most e-cigarette products contain and emit numerous toxic substances and increase your heart rate and blood pressure. The oils used in vapes/e-cigarettes may contain harmful chemicals such as very high levels of nicotine, THC (the mood-altering chemical found in marijuana), and others.

Use of these vaping devices has and can lead to medical trauma. A high concentration of addictive chemicals coupled with a teenager’s need to be accepted by peers is a dangerous combination. You are very wise to stay away from vaping and for encouraging you friends to do the same.

er contagious smile and zest for life are her trademark, second only to her intense love for Jesus Christ. The native-born Nebraskan and reigning 2018 Miss USA, Sarah Rose Summers, has a great deal to talk about as her year ends with the crowning of the 2019 Miss USA, Cheslie Kryst, an attorney from North Carolina.

The now “former” Miss USA’s next move is marriage in October to fiancé, Conner Combs, and a residence in New York City. Their engagement followed the Miss Universe pageant where Summers made the Top 20 in December. Despite all the busyness of the past few weeks, Sarah Rose and Conner took the time to give Be Vivacious readers a “what it looks like” view of their life together and just how much Jesus Christ places a roll in each layered detail.

on, Summers professes she hasn’t gone a day since “…without speaking to him, being encouraged by him, praying with him, and loving him fully.”

One of the toughest parts for Sarah Rose and Conner has been how to date and honor God in their relationship because the Bible doesn’t talk about dating per se. Both define dating as a “process of testing someone’s suitability as a spouse.” The two stress 4 important ways to keep a commitment to God during the voyage to finding the right spouse: Remain committed to your personal walk with Jesus.

Do not become reliant on one another to lead the walk. As individuals, continue to chase after Jesus, and if he/she is the one, it will be about chasing Jesus, not each other.

Their wedding will mark three years since the couple began a dating relationship. “Friends tried to set us up,” responded Summers, shrugging her shoulders, “but I was focused on completing two college degrees, two jobs, and a blossoming relationship with Christ.”

Seek trustworthy accountability.

Accept the reality that you cannot do this alone.

There will be struggles and things you both need to work on and work through. Having trusted people with similar values around you is vital.

Commit to clear communication.

Shortly after, Sarah Rose came across a social media post of guy friends helping victims of a flood in Louisiana. Her first words to Blair Lynch, one of her closest girlfriends, were “…I want to serve others with my significant other!” Whether it was a “told you so” moment or not is unknown; however, Blair put the two in contact through Facebook, and the rest is, well, “their journey in love.”

This is big for the guys. If the girl is guessing about where things stand or what the relationship is, the guy is failing to give clear communication. Also, ladies, share your concerns, expectations, and frustrations with him. Believe it or not, it takes guys some time to begin learning the art of reading your mind so, help him out, speak what is on your mind.

Cherish each other.

“Conner attended my college formal with me. We had such a blast two-stepping, laughing, and talking all night long.” Sarah Rose confesses, and her sisterin-law can attest, it was the night she knew, Conner Combs was her “forever”.

You are sons and daughters of God before anything else. Remember that love is patient and a pure heart is essential. Trust that God’s way is the best way.

The first official date followed with an invitation to his brother’s hockey game. Sarah remembers, “Because I was already head over heels, I couldn’t even pick out an outfit. I called in the troops – my three best friends to help me find the perfect “cute” yet “appropriate” meet the parents look.” From then

The most important piece of advice Sarah Rose and Conner can give to high school and college aged ladies about dating is “DO NOT SETTLE”. We hear a lot from our parents and church friends hanging on to our ears about purity. While it can be annoying at times, the reality of it all is important. The question to ask yourself is, “How do I want to be when I meet my future husband?” It is a question which

F E AT U R E can make some feel uncomfortable or guilty. God’s Grace covers all those feelings and more.

Sarah Rose and Conner assure Be Vivacious readers, “Don’t feel ashamed, because your future husband will love you as Christ does with forgiveness and affection. I promise you, ladies, when you find someone who loves Jesus first, he’ll make you feel more precious, treasured, and valued than you ever knew was possible.”

Conner admits, “Sarah Rose was my first, and last, girlfriend. I wanted someone in my life who would run the race with me.”

Sarah Rose wishes she could say the same about Conner, but she was a girlfriend/boyfriend type of gal from junior high days. “I had two long term, serious boyfriends in high school. My freshman year of college, I became a Christian. As a baby believer, I did not fully know what it looked like to walk with the Lord and have a Christ like relationship.” After a year and a half, it ended with Sarah Rose’s first heartbreak from a guy she truly believed she was going to marry. During this hardship, she ran toward the Lord instead of from Him.

When asked about the aspects they love the most about one another, it is easy to see there are many for this dynamic, Jesus loving, perfectly fitted imperfect couple.

At the beginning of their relationship, the two spent time together in group hangouts with friends: bowling, church and school events; but they also found quality time for intentional private conversations.

As a single guy when you find someone that you are interested in what are the qualities that attract you the most and why?

A:

I would say one important quality that I am looking for in a girl is her heart for the Lord and for people. It is important to me that her passions and desires line up with her love for God. She needs to be someone who is compatible with my family, friends, and the Call that is on my life to serve the Lord. I want her to be someone who will push me Spiritually and has a strong walk with the Lord independently. I am an upbeat person, and I love to laugh. A sense of humor is a great quality; but, one of the most attractive aspects of a girl is being confident in whom God made her to be.

How should a girl be treated by someone that she is dating? By this we mean every aspect... physical, emotional and spiritual. What are some of the things that you did to show Shelby that she was very valuable to you when you were dating?

A:

Shelby and I met senior year of high school, but did not start dating until our freshman year of college. I knew she was the one for me pretty early on by the way she carried herself.

She was not like any other girl I’d met before.

Shelby is a strong believer and is not afraid to share it - which is something I truly admired.

She is smart, independent, and a hard worker, in whatever she puts her heart and soul into.

I noticed how she truly valued quality time.

And it did not matter whether it was in person or over the phone as long as I was there for her and made an effort to get to know her, I could tell that it meant a lot. At times I’d wake up before 6:00am to drive across town and have some coffee with her before work. It was nice to just be there together and not have any distractions. She told me from the very beginning of our relationship that she did not want to waste her time, and she was serious and did not play any childish games. One thing that really helped us grow as a couple were boundaries - physically and emotionally. Physically we avoided situations that we knew were not right. Emotionally we guarded our hearts and built trust. Shelby and I had different spiritual upbringings, but some of the best conversations we had, were about God and what He was doing in our lives, which brought us even closer together.

Random relationship thoughts: •Physically: there must be boundaries and the line should never be crossed.

•Emotionally: she needs to be able to feel safe and her heart should be guarded. and I don’t mean just physically.

•Spiritually: she should be encouraged to grow •Don’t let a guy play with your emotions. Be aware if they are in Christ and not away from Him. telling you what you want to hear.

•A girl should always be hard to get. No guy is ever interested in an easy girl in the long run,

After dating multiple people in your teens and early 20’s, what was it about your wife specifically that set her apart as someone that you knew you wanted to spend your life with?

What qualities stood out to you the most? How long had you been dating when you knew she was your girl, and how long after that did you propose?

A:

What set her apart was the way she carried herself with confidence not arrogance and with a sense of being complete. (She doesn’t need anyone) I knew she was different, and my asking her out was not going to be the same. I couldn’t approach her the way other men have approached her in the past.

After only dating for one month, I knew she was the one for me. It was our third date. I was walking to the front door, and I said quote “I’m gonna marry you.” She then said, “Can you just walk me to my front door?”

This idea of pursuing someone that you are interested in is a part of who God made us to be. We are made to live in relationship with others. We pursue friendships on a regular basis, but there is a God given order to pursuing dating relationships. In today’s culture that order seems to be confused. As a man, God made you to be the pursuer not the one being pursued. Talk to us about your thoughts on this. Do you want to be the one who wins the heart of your girl or are you ok with her coming after you? Why (either way)?

A:In today’s culture, I do think that the subject of which gender can pursue which has turned to more

perspective and opinion rather than a way of life. But in my perspective, I think the man should pursue the woman. Not that I am saying there is anything wrong with a woman pursuing a man, I doubt God would completely dislike a relationship where the woman pursues a man, it’s just in that sense, I see more repercussions outweighing the benefits. For me, when being the pursued, it brings two things for me: a sense of no challenge and caution. I prefer to enjoy the challenge of pursuing. What catches my interest is feeling that someone is uninterested in me (to a certain extent, of course). As for caution, if I am being pursued, I caution myself because 1) I do not know her intentions for the most part, and 2) how many others has she pursued and been successful? If I were being pursued by a woman, I wouldn’t shut her down simply because she is pursuing me, but it wouldn’t have the same effect or interest for myself as if I were the one pursuing. Winning the heart of a woman and overcoming that challenge brings a stronger sense of appreciation. Granted, I’m not saying I want a woman to not show ANY interest, just the fact that making it easy makes the process lose its value. “ A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words. ”

About Me:

I am a web and technology strategist by day, and I teach ballet and dance classes to children on the weekend at Dancefx Atlanta. Before this, I was a performer at the Walt Disney World Resort And Universal Studios.

During my time as a performer, and all years leading up to that I found working out to be boring and I was not consistent.

When I moved to Atlanta and began working in an office I had to find a way to stay in shape and still have fun. God led me to the right people and places in Atlanta to get moving! I got back into dance with Dancefx Atlanta and through them I was also able to get into teaching and I found I was able to give back to children in a beautiful way that inspires them through movement.

Then, I felt led to go to more and more fitness studios...online and offline. I tried all sorts of classes and began to fall in love with fitness from the Atlanta community and online fitness communities. Everyone was so positive and encouraging, which is what I love! I started doing more book research on physical fitness and ended up studying and passing my Personal Trainer Certification exam last year.

Fitness improved my energy levels and my appearance inside and out. I felt like God was really showing me some of the gifts he has given me for movement, instruction, and strategy.... and ultimately how much he loves me and wants the best for me.

I used to always be concerned about what I was doing wrong in my relationship with Jesus. There was a lot of fear and I had to break free from that through Him and understand that what he wants for us is always the best and just to fully love and trust Him. I’ve learned how to fully love Jesus through trusting His goodness, how to love myself by consistently taking care of my body, and how to love others by giving them the instruction they need to love a fit and healthy life. This is what I strive to convey on my Instagram and YouTube.

The Relationship Link

In the very beginning God knew that it was not good for man to be alone (Genesis 2:18), so He created a helper for Adam which created relationship with others. You see God had already established a one on one relationship with Adam, but He saw that relationship with others is very important for us. Having solid relationships in all areas of your life will improve your life significantly! Steven Furtick puts it this way, “It’s important to God that you have the right people in your life, but the only way you are going to have the right people in your life is if you are going to be the right person in your heart. That’s the only way you are going to attract them to begin with…” There is this misconception that if you could just date this person or if you could just be friends with that person or if your family could just get their act together that you would be happy and life would be great, but happiness isn’t finding the right person. Happiness is being the right person, so let’s dig into what the Bible says about Relationships and how we can be more like Christ in every relationship we have. For the next five weeks I challenge you to spend time with each scripture, and really dig deep into what it means to be in Christ centered relationship with others! Use the lines below each day to write down how the daily scripture can be applied to your personal relationships.
