SYMPATHETIC WASTE REHABILITATION CENTRE

Genius in Nature / Studio SA3 / April - August 2020 Site: Semakau Landfill BIOMIMICRY IN ARCHITECTURE This studio project endeavours to go beyond human creativity and ego, but instead rely on the enormous wisdom and genuity that nature has to offer in design. This radically shifts the focus of this architecture from an ego-centric perspective to an eco-centric one.

Through the detailed exploration of the possibilities of creating spaces, structures and functions/programs are informed by the natural order and dynamics of the Asteroidea, or Starfish.

The starfish has an important and active role in maintaining coral reef biodiversity and driving ecological succession.

They are probably the most important predators in the shallow ecosystem, eating basically anything that they can come across. Their feeding activities control the whole ecosystem.

The starfish is a selflessly selfish creature, which consumes all the waste on the sea floor to fulfill its basic needs. But as a result of all the consumption, the starfish returns to its surroundings a clean, livable and pollution - free habitat.

The the and are

body form of the starfish is fundamentally same across all species - a central disk radiating arms, and symmetrical. There more than 1600 species of starfish.

The site is just south of Semakau Landfill, Singapore's first and only off-shore landfill. However, with the gradual increase of waste and rubbish, this Landfill is projected to be full by 2035.

That is the problem the Starfish will attempt to tackle.

Unusual Way of Eating A starfish feeds by first extending its stomach out of its mouth and over the digestible parts of its prey, such as mussels and clams. The prey tissue is partially digested externally before the soup-like "chowder" produced is drawn back into its 10 digestive glands.

Closer look at the basic form of the leg Top view in diagram:

feet I noticed that the movement of the starfish legs is not not just one giant flexible piece of matter, but rather many small segments joined in a row, with tiny gaps in between. So, I decided to do a study on the segment vs. gap ratio.

Ratio of number of segments to number of gaps (x: x-1), and its effect on the starfish’s movements All the basic up and down motion is pitched at 45 degrees.

These horizontal tubes across the leg swing side to side to direct the legs of the starfish towards the center of its body, where its mouth is. This is how it brings the food to its mouth.

The variation of the basic forms of each leg is the number of gaps in between, times 10. (eg. 2 gaps X10)

The study of the starfish’s water-filled tube feet led me to the discovery of this “Sea Star Leg” flotation device, typically used in oil rig construction.

In the starfish, water fills its fluid feet, enabling it to lift and paddle.

In the architecture, the sea star legs for the side structure enables it to float in the shallow waters. It is a hollow core made from concrete. Concrete can be made to float if it is shapped with a hollow. A hollow object will displace a volume of water greater than the actual volume of solid material in the object.

1:50 SCALE MODEL OF JEAN-TJIBAOU CULTURAL CENTRE

Building Structures - Iconic Building / Year 1

From researched plans, sections and elevations of this building, I constructed a 1:50 scale model of the Cultural Centre, to learn more about the structural system of the building.

Two concentric rings creating a double layer make up the walls of the cases. The interior ring/ wall is made of vertical columns of laminate iroko wood, while the exterior ring/ wall is made of curved laminated wooden members.

Horizontal and diagonal steel bracing and connections were used to connect the two rings and make them rigid.

1:100 SCALE MODEL OF SIX RAMSGATE BY WALLFLOWER A+D Building Construction - Iconic House / Year 1

This 1:100 Scale Model of the Residence at Six Ramsgate Road in Singapore was accordingly assembled based on plans, sections, elevations and real-life shots of the house.

In the modelmaking process I gained a higher awareness of the meticulous care that goes into building construction.

THE ALL-KNOWING GUARDIAN OF THE SECRET TREASURE

The Villagers and their Dwelling of Magic / Studio SA2 / Year 1 Site: Buffalo Road, Little India In this project, we were tasked to design a shophouse dwelling based on our observations of a villager in his site context. These studies led me to an architecture that empowered a cashier to have full control over the whole business operation at any given time, and yet remain obscure to guard the money. Through this project I learned how to create unique spaces that accommodate an individual's distinctive lifestyle or necessities.

I chose a cashier lady villager at a restaurant to observe, being careful to note her actions throughout the day, over several days.

This studio project attempts to superimpose two seemingly unrelated realities together, you from your current environment by transporting you into the hyperreality of another as another persona within your environment.

By shifting your point of view into the foreign, we see the familiarity of the everyday environment/culture with a fresh eye.

This journey in essence attempts to shift our perspective, keeping us on track from th ceptions which might have blinded us and the distractions which our whims might oth chosen.

In this studio, I back in time into a parallel reality to discover the secrets, dreams or Tiong Bahru. I travelled into Tiong Bahru through the eyes of my chosen persona, Fan my great-grandfather.

I created a travelogue to systematically document the parallel life in the past. The travelogue serves as a personalized data which can also be combined into a collective information to form an overall psychogeographic map of the area. This provided an alternative way to study spaces, the surroundings and the everyday, and allowed me to reapply my findings into a new program of my design.
