BHL
LETTER FROM THE EDITORIN-CHIEF TO ALL OF YOU... This issue of our magazine is a bittersweet one for me to write about. So many of our features in this issue are ones that are very important to me. Alongside our stunning luxury and travel articles, our Holiday issue will take you on a personal journey… from celebrating the 10 Year Anniversary of this rollercoaster ride that’s been BHL, to commemorating the passing of a dear friend and integral part of BHL’s family, Gary Applegate; to highlighting the premiere of my documentary The Road to Yulin... and Beyond, which has been a labor of love for me over the past few years. This magazine issue means so much to me, especially in light of the events that have happened in the world over the past year. Our world has experienced some extremely devastating trials in the past few months and many people have had their lives destroyed or affected in ways I cannot begin to imagine. Many of us have been lucky enough to only have read about these, and to have tried to help in whatever way we can. The destruction the hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires have wrought on the world is shocking and the devastation created by the senseless tragedy in Las Vegas has left me heartbroken for the people affected. It’s in times like these that we recognize that nothing is set in stone and we can never know what is around the next corner. The only thing we can do is to hold tight to our loved ones, celebrate the good things in life, and try to give back and make change wherever we can. I urge you to reach out to disaster relief organizations and to contribute to causes that you believe in. The people we’ve chosen to feature in this issue – Nicole Kidman being our highlighted cover story – are people who have made a point of giving back, and are trying to make this world a better place. The people I admire in life always have a philanthropic aspect and try to use their platforms to create change and make a difference. They are strong, capable, and compassionate. I hope you are as inspired by their stories as I have been. The holidays are a meaningful and memorable time, with much to celebrate. We hope that you are uplifted by our issue, and that flipping through its pages provides a much-needed relief from the cares of the world. It’s important to appreciate the wonderful things in life too and to embrace them as fully as we can, as we never know when they will slip away. To me, that’s always been my family, my friends… and my dogs! My wish for you all this holiday season is that you’re surrounded by love, laughter, and whatever it is that is most important to you. Love always,

TENYEARS INTHE MAKING by Pandora Vanderpump Sabo Photography - Edmund Prieto
T
his was a night of celebration. A night of revelry and memories. A night where the people who have been so important to us came together to celebrate the past, present and future of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine. The room was filled with the people who have made our magazine what it is today, and flooded with the happy recollections of the last ten years. The night was a milestone evening for us at BHL. A torch was passed, when our Editor-in-Chief of the last decade, Kimi Applegate, welcomed our new Editor-in-Chief Lisa Vanderpump with open arms, and encouraged her to shepherd our publication into its second decade of luxury. It was also a poignant and emotional night. The guests joined together to honor someone who has been so important to us all and sadly left this world mere days before – our President Mark Kurian’s father, Gary Applegate. A force of nature, a guiding hand, a happy soul… Gary was the patriarch of the Beverly Hills Lifestyle family, and we honor his memory and celebrate his life. It was a night of every emotion, that will never be forgotten.
Looking around the room that evening, every face was there because they’ve been a part of the magazine’s history… and, more importantly, will be essential to where the magazine is going. It was a night that celebrated the people who’ve built our platform. A decade of striking faces, our black and white covers of the past, were blown up and set against the backdrop of the stunningly minimal 101/Exhibit Art Gallery. The gallery curates beautiful exhibits of artists that are taking art to the next level and, as such, it was a perfect location to welcome BHL to its future. Adorning the room was masterful furniture by Susan Hornbeak-Ortiz of Shine by S.H.O and stunning florals by Kevin Lee. It was a night of festivity and glamour. It was also a night of gratitude. We were honored to have some of our incredible partners featured throughout the evening; guests sipped elegant bubbles from Ferrari Trento, and pale pink Provence Rosé from Vanderpump Rosé. Magnums of Ferrari garnished the bar, as guests feasted on decadent hors d’oeuvres by Sur Restaurant. As our guests said their goodbyes, they took home gorgeous gift bags featuring elegant Decorte skincare and, of course, our 10-year anniversary issue of BHL Magazine, gilded and adorned with the presence of the incomparable Elizabeth Taylor.
It was a heartfelt and meaningful evening, made even more unforgettable by the guests who joined us to celebrate and reminisce. We were honored and humbled by the turnout and the response to the new issue. It was the perfect night to help us honor the hard work and dedication of our team over the last 10 years. Now, here’s to 10 more!

THEROAD TO YULINAND BEYOND The world premiere of ‘The Road to Yulin… and Beyond’ documentary at the Los Angeles Awareness Film Festival Photography - Faye Sadou
O
n October 5, 2017, our Editor-in-Chief Lisa Vanderpump and her daughter, BHL’s Executive Editor Pandora Vanderpump Sabo, hosted the premiere of their documentary, THE ROAD TO YULIN…AND BEYOND, alongside Lisa’s husband Ken Todd and their business partner Dr. John Sessa. The film premiered at the Los Angeles Awareness Film Festival at LA Live in Downtown Los Angeles. The evening was a star-studded event where hundreds of celebrities, activists and influencers came out to support and raise awareness for the film’s important message. Focused on The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s fight to end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, the film gives an in depth look at the dichotomy between the empathetic, companionship-based human/canine relationships exhibited in many countries, and the horrific and brutal interactions that dogs face in parts of the world that have an unrestrained dog meat trade. “It’s been a long journey to bring this documentary to fruition, and has exposed us to atrocities that are indelibly etched on my mind. With this film, we hope to not only bring more attention to what is happening in Yulin, but also educate and inspire a new generation to fight this barbaric practice,” said Lisa Vanderpump. “This documentary covers the last two years of our mission trips to China to expose the torture that occurs during the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival. I have led our Foundation’s visits to China, and have witnessed the animal cruelty firsthand, delved into slaughterhouses, and participated in rescue missions to try to save as many dogs as possible. Our hopes for this documentary is to raise global awareness about the important issues it explores, and help us end the Yulin Dog Meat Festival forever,” said Executive Director Dr. John Sessa. Many celebrities and Yulin activists attended the event, including Leona Lewis, Maria Menounos, Christy Gibel, Lance Bass, Michael Turchin, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna, Camille Grammer, Dorit Kemsley, Teddi Jo Mellencamp, and Erika Jayne; Joyce Giraud, Heather McDonald and Vanderpump Rules’ Katie Maloney Schwartz, Tom Schwartz, Tom Sandoval and Kristen Doute. “We are so thankful for the support of our advocates, friends and allies in this fight against the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Last night was an incredible night, seeing so many people united to help our cause,” Executive Producer of the film, Kenneth Todd, said of the documentary premiere. The documentary credits Lisa Vanderpump as Producer, Kenneth Todd as Executive Producer, Pandora Vanderpump Sabo as Producer and Co-Writer, and Dr. John Sessa as Producer, Co-Writer and Director. The film features an Original Song “(We All Are) Looking for Home”, written by Diane Warren and performed by Leona Lewis. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit dog rescue organization, working on both a domestic and international front to help create a better world for dogs globally. GOLD MEETS GOLDEN
Nicole Kidman Celebrates the Event’s 5th Anniversary and Her Own Golden Year Exclusive Interview with Gold Meets Golden host Nicole Kidman By Scott Orlin
N
icole Kidman is truly having a golden year. Starting out in January, the Australian talent earned both Golden Globe and Oscar nominations for Lion; saw the February release of the critically acclaimed HBO mini-series Big Little Lies, which would bring her an Emmy for Best Performance by a Lead Actress in a Limited Series in September; brought an unprecedented four projects to the Cannes Film Festival; filmed ‘down under’ a pivotal role in the anticipated Aquaman and is currently working with fellow countrymen Russell Crowe and Joel Edgerton in the latter’s directorial effort Boy Erased, and will soon be seen in the comedy The Upside, a remake of the French hit The Untouchables. If that wasn’t enough, Kidman turned fifty, ironically her own golden anniversary. Still, the Oscar, and now Emmy winner, found time to co-host Gold Meets Golden, engaging in some magical moments with some of her own Olympic heroes. Since its inception in 2013, Kidman has lent her support each year and highlights of her involvement include spirited tête-à-têtes with such luminaries as Kerri Walsh, Missy Franklin, Gracie Gold and the “Fab 5” gymnastics teams from both London 2012 and Rio 2016.
BH Lifestyle sat down with Kidman to talk about her GMG support and own Olympic recollections. ORLIN: What is your first memory of the Olympics? Do you remember as a child watching anything in particular? KIDMAN: I remember always loving the Gymnastics, as a little girl I would watch these extraordinary girls do extraordinary things in amazement. I also always loved the 800 metres and the 100 metre sprint in track. And of course being Australian I loved the swimming.

ORLIN: Many people watching the Games fantasize about having their own Gold winning moment. What sport was yours in? KIDMAN: I did not fantasize about my own gold winning moment. I was lucky if I ever came third in a race - it was not my strong suit! The only thing I was ok at was swimming and of course I love playing tennis as well. ORLIN: As a brand ambassador for Omega, you have been given the chance to attend the Olympics and witness events up close and personal. What has that experience been like for you? Do you have a great memory of that? KIDMAN: I have been lucky to attend the Summer Olympics & the Winter Olympics with Omega, who are the Official Timekeeper for the Olympics. I must say, I have always loved the ice skating, I was always glued to the TV watching every part of it when I was little and to be able to see that up close in Vancouver in 2010 was just gorgeous and a dream come true for me. I always love the Opening Ceremony as well and the incredible creativity each city brings with every opening ceremony. ORLIN: Did you ever have a ‘fan girl” moment during the Gold Meets Golden events when meeting any Olympian? KIDMAN: I think it’s always lovely to meet people that excel at what they do and Olympians are so strong and so disciplined and I have a huge respect and admiration for that. I’ve met all of them but obviously the young girls - The Dream Team, it was so lovely to be able to meet them and talk to them about my own little girls and their love for gymnastics. ORLIN: Over the years at the Olympics, women have provided audiences with some of the most amazing accomplishments, with standouts like Nadia Comaneci, Dorothy Hamill, Kerri Walsh, Simone Biles and now Katie Ledecky. As the mother of daughters, how inspiring is this to showcase to them the physical potential they might possess? KIDMAN: Yes, when they watch it they sit down and they’re glued to the screen. It shows discipline, passion, and it allows them to see girls really excelling beyond expectation. And any time you see that pursuit of excellence I think is so good to reinforce in children. ORLIN: In 11 years the Games will be back to Los Angeles for the 3rd time. How exciting is that for LA? KIDMAN: I think we will all be so excited to have it in LA. Maybe the traffic will be the one problem. I think it will be really special and there will be such a unity in the city and that’s the thing about the Olympic games, it unifies people.

ANEVENT WORTHITS WEIGHTIN GOLD by Scott Orlin and Charley CullenWalters
L
os Angeles has many famous intersections: Sunset & Vine, Wilshire & Fairfax and Figueroa & Olympic. But its most intriguing intersection could be that of Hollywood & Sport - a location much like Neverland that is not on any chart. The way one finds this gem is by securing an invitation to Gold Meets Golden, an annual awards season gathering of the best in both entertainment and sport, where Athletes and Television, Film, and Music stars get to kick back and share their mutual admiration and inspiration for one another. With the recent announcement of the Olympics’ triumphant return to Los Angeles in 2028, Hollywood has been handed a fresh dose of Olympic Fever. This will mark Los Angeles’ third time hosting the Summer Games, and the return of those Games to the USA for the first time in over 25 years. As we also look for ward to another exciting Hollywood Awards Season, we take a look back at the history and highlights of “GOLD MEETS GOLDEN,” celebrating its 5th Anniversary on January 6th, 2018. The event coincides not only with one of co-host Nicole Kidman’s biggest award seasons ever, but also with a landmark “10 Years To Go” moment from the awarded Los Angeles Olympic Bid. Gold Meets Golden began in 2012 when event creators Scott Orlin and Charley Cullen Walters were at the London 2012 Games, and had a chance to surprise some of the athletes with video shout-outs from their favorite Hollywood Celebrities. The success of these moments led to a rather GOLDEN idea. What if these now infamous athletes were invited to Hollywood for Awards Season, and given the chance to meet some of their Hollywood idols… while simultaneously realizing that THEY themselves are heroes and inspirations to the actors and filmmakers they so adore? The outcome was “Gold Meets Golden”– a chance for Gold Medalists and athletes to engage with some of entertainment’s best at the intersection of Hollywood & Sport.

For the inaugural event in January of 2013, Jon Bon Jovi, Kerry Washington, Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman came on board as the first official “hosts” and, when they mixed and mingled with the likes of such legendary sports names as Nadia˘ Comaneci, Bart Conner, Gabby Douglas, Missy Franklin, Kerri Walsh, Evan Lysacek and Alyson Felix, the organizers knew they had truly struck Gold. Five years later, GMG has been attended by A-Listers Sofía Vergara, Naomi Campbell, Chris Hemsworth, Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Paulson; and legendary athletes Mary Lou Retton, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Mark Spitz, Terrell Owens and Apolo Ohno. ˘ Legendary Gymnast Comaneci has attended all four of the events, along with her husband, fellow gymnastics gold medalist Conner. “We ˘ look for ward to this happening every year,” says Comaneci, “It is an incredible experience to meet our favorite stars of TV & Film, who sometimes don’t realize who we are until they are told our names, and then they all seem to have a story about their love for Sports & Olympics.” Diver and 5-time medalist Greg Louganis has also attended every year. “I have always been such a huge fan of Hollywood, and having dabbled in acting myself, I have great respect for what these actors do. It’s fun to hear each year how each of our industries inspire one another.” On the acting side, Gold Meets Golden has brought out the Olympic Fever in much of Hollywood. Two-time event attendee Matt Bomer was star-struck meeting Nadia, as he told her “I used to watch the movie ‘Perfect 10’ over and over as a child, and had several of your routines memorized!” Decathlete Ashton Eaton also met Caitlyn Jenner for the first time at the 2017 event, and Caitlyn was quick to point out “Hey – you broke my record!”
Gold Meets Golden has also attracted top-notch Olympic, Sporting and Fashion partners including Coca-Cola (who, as the longest standing partner of the Olympics and Paralympic Games, provide a historic display of Olympic torches and memorabilia), Procter & Gamble who received several “Thank You Mom” Shout-outs from celebrities and athletes alike, resulting in millions of #BecauseOfMom hashtag impressions and NBC/Universal, who hosted the event within their own viewing party in 2014.

The EQUINOX West Los Angeles Flagship Health Club, with its adjoining glamorous event space, has provided the locale for the event in the other three years. One year, Missy Franklin, whose coach told her she could only attend the event with a strict contingency that she would still swim each day, performed laps in the facility’s impressive Olympic-sized pool. In a true show of Golden power, some of the athletes have been invited to walk the Golden Globes Red Carpet, where classic “wow” moments have abounded; such as Salma Hayek breaking down in ˘ tears as she met her childhood hero Nadia Comaneci, Kerry Washington bowing down to gymnast Simone Biles, skier Nick Goepper meeting his “crushes” Taylor Swift and Emma Stone, Missy Franklin rubbing shoulders with long-time hero Leonardo DiCaprio, and Justin Timberlake & Jessica Biel giving Red Carpet tips to members of the “Fab 5” Gymnastics team. Each year, Gold Meets Golden takes on a bit of a new theme. In 2013, “GMG” honored the returning athletes of the London 2012 Games. In 2014, the event acted as a “Hollywood Send-Off” to the athletes departing for Sochi a few weeks later, featuring a whole wall of messages wishing luck to athletes around the world, and a sum of funds donated via auction to TeamUSA. In 2015, GMG took a turn in a non-Olympic year, and instead celebrated the equally inspiring athletes of the Special Olympics Games on Oscar Weekend, which were making their debut in Los Angeles later that summer. It was a true joy to see the smiles on these athletes’ and ambassadors’ faces as they hugged the likes of Chris Evans, Nicole Kidman, Gina Rodriguez, Katie Holmes and more. And the 2017 event was a great welcome back to the athletes who had performed so magnificently in Rio de Janeiro, as well as a promotional vehicle for the (then) LA2024 Olympic Bid, soon to become LA 2028. This past year Gold Meets Golden also debuted a new musical performance component, with Rumer Willis and Brian Justin Crum singing a version of LALA Land’s winning “City of Stars” accompanied by composer and winner Justin Hur witz. It was a perfect selection to represent the City of both Hollywood AND sporting stars. The “Gold Meets Golden” torch does not stop at Awards weekend. Ancillary events and red carpet appearances have taken place at sports-related Hollywood Premieres such as Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, RACE: the Jesse Owens Story, and other competition-based films like Divergent, where star Kate Winslet took a photo with all of the recent Sochi 2014 medalists holding up their hardware. Looking for a Golden Ticket to one of the hottest events of the Award Season? Despite its growth in visibility over the years, Gold Meets Golden remains an intimate and private event, with attendance granted to only film and television professionals, Pro Athletes and Olympic Medalists, and VIP Sponsor guests. taly’s most awarded bubbles, Ferrari Trento, returned as the Official Sparkling Wine of Emmy® Award Season for the third consecutive year. After the awards, starstudded guests sipped their way down the red carpet and into the Governors Ball. This year’s Emmy Awards theme of Golden Grandeur celebrates the confluence of luxury and sustainability: a message embodied by Ferrari Trento, whose estate vineyards were awarded organic certification this year. Ferrari’s natural elegance and connection to its land were a superlative match to the lush golden decor - all repurposed, recyclable, and biodegradable - that transformed the ballroom. Inside the party, golden pipes cascaded along the ceiling and larger than life Emmy statuettes stood proud. Each bar offered the full portfolio of wines: Ferrari Brut Trentodoc, Ferrari Perlé, Perlé Rosé, and Giulio Ferrari Riserva del Fondatore. As Ferrari bubbles sparkled, twinkling stars shined, an estimated 30,000 glasses were shared across this year’s Emmy Award Season. 47

LUXURY NOW
VINTAGE DREAMS by Meaghan Mahoney Dusil
A
round this time of year, luxury shoppers face a particularly tantalizing problem: what do you get for people who already indulge in beautiful things frequently? At PurseBlog, we have a preferred answer for that: a new bag. We’re admittedly a little biased, but our reasoning on the matter is sound. Buying fashion for a friend or loved one can be a little bit tricky because most things must be bought in sizes; for bags, anyone can carry anything they want, which removes some of the holiday shopping guesswork. Also, most bags can be carried frequently, year-round and no matter the weather, which makes them gifts their recipients can cherish for years. And, ultimately, who doesn’t always want a new bag?
something extra-special, Marmont bags are also available with embroideries, pearls and studs.
Not all designer handbags are created equal, though, and some make more surefire gifts for the fashionable women in your life than others. Below, we’ve chosen a few different styles that are especially foolproof.
The Bottega Veneta Knot Clutch
The Louis Vuitton Speedy Nano Bag Sometimes, you just want to carry something cute and have a little bit of fun, and those kinds of bags are among the most joyful to give to others. For our money, we’d want the Louis Vuitton Speedy Nano Bag, which is a shrunken-down version of the timeless classic, finished with a crossbody strap for easy, hands-free carry. The tiny size gives the bag a sense of irreverence and humor, but it’s still a cute little bag for errands when you only need to take some keys and cards along. The perfect mix of fun and function.
Giving someone a luxurious evening bag is so decadent. Because even most high-end shoppers don’t use them all that often, clutches feel so special and elegant, especially when the bag in question is an iconic piece like the Bottega Veneta Knot Clutch. The Knot has graced the world’s best galas, premieres and red carpets for years, owing to its sophisticated details, timeless feel and seemingly unending list of colors, materials, embellishments and options. If you want the woman in your life to think of you on every special occasion and at every party, this is the bag to give her.
The Hermès Birkin The Birkin is, of course, the grande dame of designer bags and, if you really want to sweep someone off their feet (and if money is no object), it’s the first thing we’d recommend. The bag is pricey, but we’ve heard reports recently that Birkins are becoming a bit easier to find in Hermès boutiques; the years-long waitlist of legends is no more. The bag is still a rarity, though, and there’s no better way for a woman to tell the world that she’s made it than to have one on her arm. For the holidays or any other time, the Birkin is the ultimate fashion gift.
Chanel Boy Bag It’s hard for a bag to be both classic and trendy at the same time, but, if any bag in the world pulls it off right now, it’s the Chanel Boy Bag. And that’s part of what makes it such a wonderful gift—it can fit a wide range of personal styles, and it’s both something the recipient will want to carry immediately and something she’ll be able to reach for in years to come. It can also go in a lot of directions: the Boy Bag looks stately in neutral leathers but is seasonally available in all kinds of neons, exotics, and embellishments. For a recent collection, Chanel even experimented with insetting the bag with LED lights.
The Gucci Marmont Shoulder Bag If you’re looking for an of-the-moment handbag gift, you can’t do any better than the Gucci Marmont. Its perfectly retromodern look mixes the old-school glamor of the disco era with the new-school functionality of a crossbody flap bag whose strap can also be doubled up to be worn on the shoulder. The look is finished with the new GG logo buckle introduced by wunderkind Gucci designer Alessandro Michele, and it comes in several sizes and materials, including velvet, leather and python. For a little

With Lisa’s creative aesthetic and love of the decadent and unique, and Christina’s design mentality and years of experience in the world of fashion and style, this collection is the perfect melding of European elegance and East Coast edge. MY ANGEL by Lawrence Zarian
Photography - Tony Duran Stylist - Toni Pickett
I
was on the phone the other day with Mark Kurian, the Founder and President of Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine, and he was telling me how much he genuinely likes my “Unsung Angels” feature in the magazine and how it resonates with the vision of where the magazine is headed…a celebration of people! He asked if I would be open to sharing a little bit of myself with the readers, and let them know more about me and who I am at this moment in my life. I thought about it for a few days...and, when I woke up this morning, it not only felt like the right thing to do, but I was invigorated and excited to expose myself and let the readers see me…truly SEE me!
77
PROFILE
12 years ago, my life changed forever. 12 years ago, by the Grace of God, I embarked on a new journey that has not only saved my life but has given me a NEW life! Every day for the past 12 years, I get to “suit up & show up” and do my absolute best to live a sober life of integrity, honesty, kindness and consideration. I’m not perfect and will continue to make mistakes, but every day I do my best to be my best.
The other constant in my life is that of my angel here on earth, my twin brother Gregory. Not only was I born with an identical twin brother, I was born with a best friend...my life’s wing-man. An angel that has been by my side every step of the way. It hasn’t always been easy in any way, shape or form. To live this life with your carbon copy can mean extraordinary challenges and, unless you’re a twin, there’s no way to fully comprehend this experience. We have definitely had our ups and downs. The struggles are real. We’ve fought. Fought hard - emotionally and physically. It’s been painful. Frustrating. Heartbreaking. And every time we hit rock bottom, we both fight just as hard and vigorously to find our own personal truth, LISTEN to one another, LEARN from the past and end up with a stronger foundation based in LOVE.
This past year has truly been one of my most challenging yet. From the ending of a relationship, to falling down some stairs, which led to struggling with a lifethreatening illness that not only put me in the hospital, but turned my entire world upside down... I was able to sur vive by God’s grace and the love and constant support of my friends...my true friends that have the actions to support their words.
The day after our worst fight ever, Gregory and I had the extreme honor of shooting with famed photographer Tony Duran, a true genius! Tony is a brilliant photographer celebrated for his unique ability to uncover those hidden parts of you that have been lying dormant, just waiting to be exposed. That morning, the last thing we wanted was to see each other, let alone be exposed in an intimate photoshoot together. Well, the Universe had other plans and put us exactly where we needed to be…
In hindsight, my accident was a blessing on so many levels. It has taught me to NOT be a hero and that it’s okay to go to the hospital when you know that something is definitely wrong. It has taught me to reach out to my friends and not only fill them in on what’s happening but that it’s okay to ask for help. And finally, it has taught me what the true meaning of friendship is. It’s the friends that are with you through it all. Those individuals that will be right next to you, even through the rough patches. It’s those friends that stand by you when they see that you’re in trouble and run to support and carry you until you’re able to walk alone. Those are true friends. That’s your family.
We were vulnerable and raw. We needed a way to find our way back to each other and it was through Tony’s eye that we were able to do just that. He perfectly orchestrated a series of vignettes that forced Gregory and I to SEE one another through a different lens, but also share the same space and connect physically and emotionally. I’ll never forget that day and how we were able to start anew, from the bottom up. These profound images capture our journey back to one another.
This past year, some friendships have ended and that’s okay. I wasn’t easy. I was a different person. I was in a foreign space that was extremely scary and life changing. I’ve never been so physically impaired before and it was definitely altering me, my behavior and my spirit. I’m not going to lie, it was brutal and, on many levels, heartbreaking. BUT I came through it stronger and so much wiser. I’ve seen first-hand who’s in it with me and who’s not. And that’s okay. AND, most of all, it’s all in God’s hands. It always is.
Being an identical twin, in the same business, with the same friends, wants, passions and desires has been a definite roller coaster of adventure. And through it all, we always come out stronger, wiser and so much closer. No one celebrates me more than my twin brother. He’s always there to cheer me on, hold my hand and remind me that he’s “got me” and I’m never alone. EVER. From the moment we were born to those nights in the hospital this past summer, Gregory has held my hand every step of the way. He truly is my ANGEL.
From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank my friends for holding my hand and taking care of me. I have never needed you more and have never been more grateful. Truly. You will never know the depth of gratitude I feel for you. Most of all, thank you, God, for divine LOVE. You are the true constant in my life.
I love you, kiddo. #myhome Follow Lawrence on Instagram: @lawrencezarian

OH TOBE DEE! Our Editor-in-Chief Lisa Vanderpump sits down with the illustrious Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger, the new Creative Director for Judith Leiber Photography - Tatijana Shoan
I
t’s such a pleasure when I get to feature strong, brilliant women in Beverly Hills Lifestyle Magazine and Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger epitomizes both of those things. Dee is a powerhouse of style who exhibits both admirable family values and a powerful dedication to philanthropy. Dee & Tommy Hilfiger live their lives with kindness, laughter and altruism and, for me, those are essential qualities I look for in both a friend and a source of inspiration. On a personal level, I have such admiration for the Hilfiger family. Their love of life, passion for design, and commitment to their family are evident every time I see them. I have enjoyed many a splendid evening socializing and laughing with them both. However, I bonded with Dee most over her compassion and desire to make the world a better place. Dee Ocleppo Hilfiger is not only an extremely talented designer and businesswoman, but a truly good person. I sat down with Dee to find out a bit more about her journey and experience in the fashion industry.
The world of fashion is changing every day‌ how do you feel it is changing for the better? I feel the fashion world has changed a lot in the past 10 years, mostly due to technology. For the informed consumer, fashion has become so much more accessible and affordable. There are so many more options and shopping platforms than ever before. Most of my shopping I do online now. I can’t remember the last time I went to a mall to shop!
81
PROFILE
What catapulted you to become a designer and fashion expert? My husband Tommy, was the one that first encouraged me to start my own handbag line, along with Mindy Grossman, who at the time was head of Home Shopping Network.
Can you think of a moment that has defined your idea of success? I think when I was in my 20s, my idea of success was defined by how much money I could make and how many friends I could have. Now, in my 50s, success to me means more about having gratitude, which I believe is the key to happiness and having true success. I have come to know so many people that have made a lot of money, but are absolutely miserable. Having a family has also re-defined my meaning of success. The love and happiness of each of our children and the love and respect of my husband is something I am incredibly grateful for and proud of… that to me is success.
How do you feel about creating a new era for Judith Leiber? I feel a great deal of responsibility bringing a heritage brand like Judith Leiber, that has existed for more than 50 years, into a new era of fashion. Fashion brands must always evolve to stay relevant with the times. As an example, when Mrs. Leiber founded her company in 1963, cell phones did not exist. I’ve been trying to develop more clutches that will fit iPhones. We also need to always stay current on new technologies with materials and manufacturing, as well as stay on top of and anticipate evolving trends.
What is the common thread between all your brands and anything you do? I am a diehard perfectionist, so I think anything I do, I give it my very best effort. Why bother doing anything if you are not going to do it right? To me, perfection comes down to a question of details. Small details require a lot more thought and always make something that could be average that much better.
What inspires you the most? Nature is probably the thing I find the most inspiring of all. I also find a lot of inspiration in art, architecture, and traveling to different destinations.
Who are your icons? Muses? My fashion icons tend to be women with a more carefree look. I love Lauren Hutton, who I think always looked beautiful, but in a very natural and effortless way.
What’s the most important part of creating a brand? The most important part of creating a brand is having a unique identity and a product that stands apart.
Being a businesswoman isn’t always easy in a world that is evolving but can often be dominated by males, what do you do to keep your platform? Being a woman in a world of businessmen is not something I give a lot of thought or energy to. Most people will be open to opinions as long as they are informed and intelligently articulated. I would hope in 2017 I don’t need to worry about being judged because I am a woman.... in any case, I don’t! “The proof is in the pudding” as they say, and it will always boil down to results. I am much more focused on performance than other people’s misguided perceptions!
What is the most original part of your story? I suppose my own journey is the most original part of the story. Like every individual, my journey has had several ups and downs but, through it all, I have always tried to be my own biggest cheerleader and maintain a strong belief in myself and my abilities. When I was younger I found it much more difficult to advocate for myself. Now that I am older, it is a whole lot easier!

DARREN KENNEDY Helping to Create Gentlemen by Bobby Ciletti Photography - Lilly Forberg
D
arren Kennedy, if anything, is a man with his own style, his own expression, and his own journey. Darren is a man of the world; his story has taken him from growing up in Ireland, to studying in Bordeaux, France, to traveling the world, and finally to living in London, Dublin and Los Angeles. It’s with these influences and eclectic lifestyle, that he has become a veritable style icon. At the age of 16, Darren was a runner for a Breakfast TV show. He knew at that point that the path he would choose would be one with a platform for his voice and ideas to be heard. Darren decided, once he got his big break on the show “This Morning” as the Entertainment, Celebrity & Style expert, that he wanted to launch his own brand and create a conversation around the passions he has for Men’s Fashion, Men’s Grooming and ultimately what it looks like to be a true gentleman. Having a huge footprint in Europe, Darren is now ready to make his debut in the US. Darren believes that being a gentleman, and looking great while doing it, is both achievable and attainable. He will be bringing a new perspective to many of the thoughts we’ve all had about being an honorable man. As Beverly Hills Lifestyle’s new Men’s Lifestyle Editor, Darren will create content that will inspire our family of readers to create looks, spaces and moments that turn a normal outfit, location or event from good to pure genius. He has been inspired by many of the greats and has a way of expressing himself and moving people to do the unconventional. We are honored to have Darren be a part of the family, and excited and eager to see how his voice will change the way people see and create things in their lives. We love that, when asked about his place within the magazine, Darren responded by saying “I am excited to speak to a new audience, I want to be fresh and exciting with my articles and look forward to being an aspirational voice.” Fashion is a huge part of Darren’s life; however, he will be bringing a perspective to all things that elevate a man to a gentleman. He will push, pull and escort our readers… and help them discover a more holistic approach to being a man. We know that he will inspire people from ordinary to extraordinary. Darren is humble, kind, and perfectly-styled… a true voice of a gentleman. We are proud and eager to have him start writing.

SHINING ONSTAGE AND OFF by Austin Addison Photography - Chris Carroll
W
ithin seconds of meeting CJ Pawlikowski, you can tell he seeks to radiate happiness and enthusiasm everywhere life takes him. And while CJ’s happiness seems effortless, it’s a conscious choice he makes daily.
This intention began a few years back, after sitting around the kitchen of his childhood home in Crown Point, Indiana with his mother Susan, a two-time cancer survivor and wellspring of inspiration for CJ. Susan told him of her love for her own wrinkles. She finds joy in their representation of the experiences she’s enjoyed to this day. It was Susan’s choice to see the evolution of her body as a record of a life well-lived that set off fireworks inside of CJ: and choosing happiness has been a mantra he’s advocated ever since. At 28, CJ has an appetite for roles in film, television, and on the stage. He’s determined to live the bicoastal life and, while setting up roots in Chelsea, he’s already finding himself jetting from New York to LA for auditions and new roles. But he is vocal about staying close to what he loves the most. “Theater and Broadway will always be my number one passion,” Pawlikowski says. “There’s something you can’t find anywhere else - the sensation of being fresh and new every night.” The constant newness, the high stakes of live performance, and the immediate reactions from the audience, always keep CJ on his toes and challenged to deliver his best. And being challenged to grow and expand in his abilities and range is one of his favorite joys in his artistry. In discussing what’s to come, CJ exclaimed that he wants to tell stories in all mediums. “Right now, a feature film sounds the most appealing, having just come off of doing theater consistently.” And given his power of manifesting - exactly what he did prior to landing his role in The Book of Mormon - don’t be surprised when you soon see CJ on the silver screen. Most recently, CJ brought his optimism to the stage of Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre, where he performed the last six weeks of his two-year run in The Book of Mormon national tour. As a part of the company, CJ played Elder Young, Elder Neeley, Elder Cunningham’s Dad, Jesus and Hitler—the latter two roles being his favorite to portray. After all, not many actors can lay claim to playing both Jesus and Hitler, especially in the same production. The Book of Mormon’s irreverent humor and comedic nature fueled CJ night after night, keeping him constantly on the move - literally. As a fitness guru, he was right at home in such a physically demanding production, burning nearly 1,000 calories each performance. CJ’s pre-show ritual, which includes taking a shot of espresso while draped in his Gryffindor cape and then meditating in his dressing room chair, kept him energized for the two hour and thirty minute run-time. These physical demands added to CJ’s love of delivering his performances. “There’s nothing like feeling artistic sweat at the end of the day.” With The Book of Mormon being a dream job, his decision to leave the company wasn’t an easy one. But he knew it was time. After all, alongside choosing happiness, “stay hungry” is a second mantra he often shares to his nearly 9,000 followers on Instagram and repeats to himself regularly. Be sure to follow CJ on Instagram for his latest happenings, fitness tips and ever-encouraging mantras: https://www.instagram.com/cjpawlikowski/

ROCKSTAR by Douglas Truesdale Photography - Tyler Bowman - Bowman Group Architectural Photography
P
erched above the Sunset Strip is a magnificent home that traces its lineage to the heady days of The Rat Pack. The property at Evanview Drive once belonged to Sammy Davis, Jr. and, through the years, has gone through extensive alterations and revisions, the last of which was in 1989. When real estate developer Jason Oppenheim acquired the property, he took the house down to the studs, making way for an entirely new inspiration for the home. Jason’s vision was to capitalize on the tremendous opportunity presented by this site, not the least of which is the sweeping city views of Los Angeles, and the Pacific beyond. And if one is ticking boxes on a Los Angeles real estate wish list, add in a home in excess of five thousand square feet; two car garage; 3 bedrooms; 4 bathrooms; generous size lot with lush landscaping; killer pool with city views; spa; state of the art kitchen and home entertainment systems; wine room; outdoor kitchen; multiple fireplaces and fire pits; sauna and massage room; and dressing rooms that would make Tom Ford weep with joy. While the home at Evanview Drive still exudes the “cool” of the 1960’s Rat Pack, Jason Oppenheim, in collaboration with architect and designer, Jhoiey Ramirez of Studio Jhoiey, have brought the property firmly into the 21st Century. One could say the vibe has transformed from Sammy Davis “Crooner” to Lenny Kravitz “Rock Star.” There is definitely a sexy-chic aesthetic to this property. Upon arriving at the home, the first thing you notice is the sculptural quality of the exterior. The street façade is windowless, and yet articulated with custom aluminum horizontal trellis, illuminated with intermittent bands of LED lighting. The stair risers to the front door are also illuminated in LED, making the treads seem to float. The pivot-hinge front door is custom made from hickory, and opens to hickory floors throughout the home. In fact, hickory is a repeating design element in the paneling, beamed living and dining room ceilings, wine room, display shelves and closet fittings. The expansive open floor plan begins with the Molteni & C Dada custom Italian kitchen. The sleek, matte grey cabinetry has a monolithic quality; the geometry is pure and uninterrupted by visible hardware. Doors and drawers are instead activated by touch. The toe-kicks are invisibly illuminated by LED ambient light, which makes the cabinetry seem to float above the floors. The Thassos Pental quartz countertops have a mitered knife-edge detail that also give a floating appearance above the base cabinets. On the sink wall, upper cabinets are detailed with full height glass doors, elegantly framed in metal. BizBee Modular Arts interlocking rock tiles create a seamless backsplash and provide textural interest to the quiet palette. Between the kitchen and dining room is one of the home’s more striking design elements, in the form of a refrigerated wine room. Ten foot tall frameless glass pivot doors open to reveal wine artfully displayed on chevron patterned hickory bottle holders. The chevron pattern is accentuated by the ambient LED lighting, and the back wall is sheathed in vegan leather.

he kitchen flows into the dining room, then the living room and home office beyond. The floor plan is entirely open on the upper level; interior walls and partitions are eliminated due to the use of structural steel, allowing the interior spaces to remain open and focused on the breathtaking views. The expansiveness is enhanced by thirteen foot high ceilings and a wall of glass that beckons you to take in the views, flooding the home with natural light. Massive floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors open onto a balcony framed with a comfortable banquette surrounding a Dekko Serenade fire bowl. Entertaining is seamless between indoors and outdoors, and the cinematic views are never compromised. The dining room is accentuated by a 72 gas fireplace, wrapped in Marmo Pentagoni mosaic tile. The home office is cleverly disguised by a louvered partition. Depending on the angle of the viewer, the desk is either visible or not. But, when seated at the desk, those aforementioned views are revealed through placement of the louvers. The first of three bedrooms is also on the entry level of the home, together with a luxurious en-suite bath. Everywhere in the home is evidence of meticulous craftsmanship. Crown moldings, door casings and baseboards have been eliminated in favor of the clean-lined simplicity of the modern design. This design choice means that all the wall, floor and ceiling planes have to be perfect and the plaster work must be meticulous, as there is no trim to hide flaws. The custom Vachera interior doors are a matte grey, echoing the kitchen, with matte black door handles. The mechanism on these door handles is magnetic, meaning the latch is invisible when the door is open. No detail has been overlooked.

tepping down the hickory stairs with glass handrail, one enters the bar and lounge area. This room bisects the dual master suites on the lower level. The lounge is fitted with a channel tufted leather sectional which sits on an elegant hair-onhide rug. A hickory paneled wall houses the television, and the adjacent bar features hickory built-ins designed with a hexagonal motif. LED ambient lighting accentuates the built-in and paneling. The art in the lounge is a map of Paris, engraved by Turgot and published in 1739 as an atlas of twenty non-overlapping sectional bird’s eye view maps of the city. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors open to a balcony and steel and glass stairs which lead to the pool, outdoor kitchen and spa areas. Each of the master suites is an enviable retreat. Both bedrooms boast soaring ceilings and walls of glass capturing the light and views. Both feature hickory paneling and home entertainment systems. One suite features a study area on a level above the sleeping area, and the other suite has a cozy fireplace facing the bed. Both suites have enormous, luxurious dressing rooms, with walls swathed in vegan suede and hickory built-ins accented in LED lighting. One of the dressing rooms is accessed by an incredible floating steel staircase. The two master baths have dual hand-carved basalt vessel sinks, Bianco Statuario marble, and Philippe Starck designed washlets for Durvait.

The stair treads are illuminated again by the LED ambient light. The pièce de résistance of the property has to be the pool area; it is something even the most jaded Angelino would envy. The swimming pool itself has incredible city views. Three waterfalls cascade from a white glass mosaic tile curved wall. A conversation pit in the middle of the pool is outfitted with a Dekko square fire pit. The pool deck is paved in white river rocks which stay cool in the Los Angeles sun, and multiple seating areas surround the pool. As if that weren’t enough, there is an outdoor kitchen, TV lounge area, full bath and sauna, and massage rooms.

CROATIA Dubrovnik, Lopud Island and Hvar by Jordan Carlyle

here is a reason that everyone is talking about Croatia lately and it’s not because Game of Thrones is filmed there… it’s because of the gorgeous beaches, the medieval architecture, and the feeling of being in a different world. From the sprawling coastlines, to the hidden coves and islands surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, Croatia offers all the historic charm of Spain with stunning crystal blue waters and strikingly beautiful beaches. During my journey throughout Croatia, I realized that the gift of just being was one that everyone should experience. I have traveled the world, but Croatia, and its incredible backdrop, gave me the surreal feeling of being exactly where I was supposed to be.

y travels through Croatia took me to Dubrovnik, Lopud Island and Hvar; each location offered me a different experience and each one is not to be missed! To be in the center of luxury and relaxation, and to truly envelop yourself in a different world than you will ever see again, I recommend taking a trip and hitting each of these places. Take 2-3 days in each place, don’t be rushed, and don’t expect to stay on a schedule! Croatia is a place where there are a ton of clocks but all you have is time. Here are my quick suggestions… but make it your place, your home and your experience. Make plans but don’t worry about sticking to them… Croatia is a place where you should just be.

y first stop was Dubrovnik. This is a place where you enter true Old World charm. A place where you are transported to the 16th Century. I recommend you stay at the Grand Villa Argentina. This hotel sits in front of the most beautiful scenery you have ever seen. It truly stops you in your tracks. It allows you to take the deep breath that so many of us strive for when it comes to vacationing. Lined with rosemary, lavender and wild orange blossoms, whether you are at the salt water pool or on their private beach you are surrounded with delicious smells, views and experiences at your fingertips. While there, I recommend eating at 360 Degrees and Viktoria Restaurants. Make sure you take a morning walk along the City Wall and do not miss exploring Lokrum Island with the Iron Throne. Next, we headed to Lopud Island…a place where dreams are made. Lopud Island is known for the best beaches in Dubrovnik and it does not disappoint. A true representation of luxury at this destination is Villa Dalmatia. You never thought that life could be as serene and beautiful as it is here…there are moments throughout Lopud Island that transport you. If you make it here, make sure to stay at Villa Dalmatia. It is the home that you have only dreamt of. When you are done mar veling at the majesty of where you’re staying, make sure you take time to go and have a romantic dinner at Bowa Restaurant. Croatia is nothing if not awe-inspiring, so make sure to take time while you are here and experience this over whelming country to the fullest.

THE GIFT OF GIVING The European Trip of a Lifetime by Trista Sutter
I
’ve always been a fan of gifts. I love giving them. I love getting them. I could spend hours in stores filled with them. They make people happy… me included! But, when I’m holding a box with a big bow and my name on it, my happiness stems from more than just the feeling of giddiness I get about adding something to the collection of goodies that I call mine (because, let’s be honest…who doesn’t love “stuff”!). It’s about feeling loved, thought of, and valued. It’s about knowing that the gift-giver cared enough to spend a bit of their hard-earned money and give a bit of their precious time to choosing something that I would hopefully love. They wanted to make me feel special and, in those moments, I do. So, when it comes to getting gifts for the ones that I hold dear, that’s always in the back of my mind. I want to make them feel just as special as I do when I’m the birthday or anniversary or new-mom or just-because girl. That’s why, for my mother-in-law’s 70th birthday, I wanted to go all out. Along with Ryan, his brother and wife, and my father-in-law, we combined her love of family with her love of travel and the nine of us (including four grandchildren, two of whom live in Germany) surprised her with a European adventure that we knew would convey just how much she is loved and appreciated. We all spent two weeks breathing in the beauty of Croatia, Austria, and Germany together, and then me, Ryan, and our kiddos headed to Paris for a mini adventure of our own. It was the trip of a lifetime and, even though there was a bit of a blip on the radar in the form of a first-time seizure for me (that’s another story for another issue), it gave us an eye-opening lesson into how short life truly is and made us appreciate our long-anticipated family vacation that much more. For those who have had the pleasure of seeing these destinations with your own eyes, you know that I’m not exaggerating when I say that they are stunning. For those who have yet to experience them, add them to your bucket list… posthaste. You will not be disappointed. Especially if you include these highlights and tips in your plans:
1 2
When in Paris, pack a blanket, bottle of wine, snacks and, if your little ones are along for the ride, bring something to keep them entertained… and get to the Champ de Mars just before dark. Your goal…to see over 20,000 light bulbs turn the Eiffel Tower into a beacon of sparkles. It only happens for a few minutes on the hour after dark, but it is worth every second you may wait and a sight you will never forget. That’s why it’s first on this list! Do your research – both online and off. Schedule some quality time with you and your computer, searching the highest rated excursions and activities, paying special attention to anything that may save you some time (skip-the-line) or make you feel like the VIP that you are (private and custom tours and experiences). The more research you do, the more at ease you’ll feel heading out on your trip – and the more likely your trip will go smoothly! For our Eurotrip, I used TripAdvisor.com (I even booked with them!) and they helped me plan the most memorable parts of our trip - they take all the guesswork out of the travel experience and guide you with the help of thousands of un-biased reviews. My mother-inlaw had been dreaming of visiting Neuschwanstein Castle for years and we were able to book a Premium Tour that not only fulfilled her dreams but also allowed all of us to see that and another gorgeous castle (Linderhof) as well as the Bavarian countryside in style.

On your first day in a big city, take advantage of local transportation and see the sights from the best vantage point around…with someone else doing the driving! Kick back, relax, and take it all in, whether you pop in the headphones, or not. Let your gut, heart, and olfactory senses guide you to the areas you want to explore and embrace your special role as tourist (while acting like a local, of course).
Get out to sea! Especially if you get to Croatia! The Adriatic Sea is full of hidden coastal gems and not all of them are chock full of tourists…if you know who to ask. We were lucky enough to spend an incredible day with Argola Charters, exploring the crystal clear turquoise waters from Split to Brac and a handful of gorgeous private coves in between. Definite highlight!
It might seem simple, but if you’re traveling with your whole family, check in with the local Tourism Boards – they can help you find local spots, events and activities that can fit the whole family. For our trip, the websites for the Austrian and Parisian tourism boards (www.austria.info and https:/ en.parisinfo.com) couldn’t have been more helpful or enlightening on what destinations and attractions should be at the top of our lists, and where we should call home for a day or two or seven (I highly recommend the Grand Ferdinand in Vienna!). They can help you plan a trip around exciting local events and regularly share images on official Instagram and Twitter accounts that will make you want to jump on a plane asap. Seeing the world for myself is one (incredible) thing, but seeing it through my children’s eyes is everything. I know it’s completely cliché, but do I care? Not. One. Bit. Why? Because I’m happy living in a cliché knowing that my kids are learning first hand about the ways of the world, and bonding with them while they’re doing it. The bigger the adventure, the bigger the treasure, so get out there and give yourself and the ones you love the gift of beautiful memories.

A VERY VANDERPUMP CHRISTMAS by Lisa Vanderpump Photography - Betsy Newman & Pandora Vanderpump Sabo
T
he holidays are my favorite time of year. ‘Tis the season to embrace your family, reminisce on the past year, and get excited for the year to come. I am so grateful each year for my friends and family, and I love to celebrate them by creating an incredible space for us to congregate and make merry. I adore adorning my home and creating an atmosphere of over-stuffed Christmas cheer. There’s no better feeling in the world than walking into a house that is warm, softly playing holiday music, twinkling with Christmas lights, and shimmering with ornaments and gifts for my loved ones. Here are some of my tips for creating a stunning environment for your holiday season! Festive Decadence. The sight that greets you as you walk through the glass doors into our home during the holidays is one of festive fun and decadence. I relish creating a show-stopping tree that the family can gather around during Christmas and, luckily, our main living room has ceilings high enough to accommodate! The holidays are the perfect time of year to indulge your extravagance – over-the-top Christmas decorations just add to the spirit of the season. Overstuff your trees, sneak festive details into unexpected corners of your home, and embrace the holiday season in all its abundance. This doesn’t have to mean throw the budget to the wind, but instead, get creative and make your house feel like you’ve taken the time to make it special. Use Your Presents. I love to wrap my presents in the most gorgeous way imaginable –I mean, they’re going to spend days under your tree, so you might as well make them part of the décor! I spend weeks prior to Christmas finding the most gorgeous bows I can hunt down. A fabulous, thick, velvety bow looks incredible under your tree - plus, who wouldn’t want to receive something that’s so beautifully adorned? In years where we’ve had to be a little more frugal, I’ve enjoyed cutting fabric into strips and spraying the edges with glitter, then folding it into a floppy lavish bow – a great do-it-yourself solution, as velvet bows are so expensive!

Christmas Color. Think quite carefully about the colors you use in your tree, and pay attention to where it’s positioned in your home. I try not to go too overly-feminine with our main tree, as it’s in the center of the house, and pepper in dark purples and metallics to offset the pinks. It’s a rich, frosted, sumptuous tree that doesn’t overwhelm the feeling of the décor. Our kitchen tree is muted as well, as it’s the focal point of our home and where we spend the most time. I decorate with pale blues, white and silver – it’s a very delicate, neutral tree that’s easy to be around throughout the holiday season. Now, that’s not to say I don’t embrace my love of pink too! Our Rococo-inspired tree in the formal living room is over-stuffed, decadent and dripping with femininity. I mix pale gold and silver with various shades of pink ornaments in velvet, feathers and different textures. Such an indulgent, beautiful tree!

LUXURY NOW
“I mix pale gold and silver with various shades of pink ornaments in velvet, feathers and different textures. Such an indulgent, beautiful tree!” The Christmas Table. I take great pleasure in decorating my Christmas table, and it’s a fabulous place to experiment with new colors and ideas. Last year, I found some incredible Christmas Crackers (an English staple!), in a beautiful array of cream and gold with black ribbons so, instead of my usual pale pink tablescape, I opted for a slightly funkier mix of black, cream, taupe, metallics and rich red roses. To keep it elegant and feminine, I did use pale pink and gold plates, to soften the look up a bit. After hours in the kitchen, it was such fun sitting down to this beautiful set up! My Christmas table is set for the whole month of December and it really adds to the festive feeling in our home. If you have two dining tables, why not keep one decorated for the holidays throughout the weeks leading up to your Christmas meal? If you don’t have two tables, you can still get the same effect by dressing up a bar cart or a kitchen island! Unexpected elements. It’s the little things that really make a difference and wow your guests – and most of them are so simple. I love to dip both real and fake flowers in glitter and add them to my arrangements. Often, as my arrangements are so large, they are filled with a lot of greenery, a few fresh flowers, and gilded fake flowers – it’s an easy way to create over-the-top stunning arrangements without breaking the bank each year! I also fill gorgeous bowls with shimmering ornaments, tie over-sized velvet bows around my vases to add a decadent touch, and fill my home with festively flavored candles – who doesn’t love the smell of cinnamon and pumpkin spice filling their home? Wherever you can, add a touch of Christmas cheer… you’ll smile when you notice it! Keep collecting. Every year, I add a little bit more to my holiday décor collection. I collect glitter-dipped flowers, velvet bows, ornaments, and each year I re-use them, while adding in a few new elements to keep it fresh! Remember the reasons. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of the holidays and stress about buying gifts, decorating extravagantly, fitting in all your obligations and so on… but take time to remember why we all love the holiday season. Your friends and family will appreciate all the little touches you create for them, but what they’ll remember most is spending time with you and enjoying your family moments. Take a seat, sip some mulled wine, and look around at the people around you – they’re the best decorations you can have!

GIADA DE LAURENTIIS’ LEMON SPAGHETTI One of the easiest pasta dishes you’ll ever make, this is great as a light meal or as a side dish, especially for grilled fish. This lemon pasta is the #1 seller at my restaurant, GIADA, in Las Vegas, where it’s served with sautéed large shrimp! SERVING SIZE: Serves 4 INGREDIENTS: 2/3 cup olive oil 2/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese ½ cup fresh lemon juice (from about 2 lemons) ¾ teaspoon salt, plus more to taste ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste 1 pound dried spaghetti 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest (from about 2 lemons) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. In a large bowl, whisk the oil, Parmesan cheese, lemon juice, ¾ teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of pepper to blend. Set the lemon sauce aside. (The sauce can be made up to 8 hours ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before using.) 2. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender but still firm to the bite, about 8 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid. 3. Add the spaghetti to the lemon sauce, and toss with the basil and lemon zest. Toss the pasta with enough reserved cooking liquid, ¼ cup at a time, to moisten. Season the pasta with more salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to bowls and serve.

WINTER IS COMING by Stuart O’Keefe
T
here is one type of food that I think we all love to indulge in as winter approaches. SOUPS!!! As the evenings get shorter and the nights get cooler, here are two of my favorite soup recipes that I want to share with you. These simple soup recipes can be made in large batches and put in the freezer up to 3 months. The perfect solution for a quick, cozy night in. To make either of these soups, I recommend that you have a good blender or an immersion blender to make them super smooth where needed. I use my trusty Vitamix when it comes to puréeing my soups. If you do not have one, I recommend asking for one as a holiday gift, or (even better yet!) you can get a refurbished one on Amazon for half the price!
Here are my quick tips when making soups:
1 2 3
Buy an immersion blender or a food processor to save time and create beautiful, velvety soups. Soups freeze extremely well, so it’s a good idea to double up on a batch, let the final product cool to room temperature, and freeze portions in airtight containers.
Soups are a great way to use any leftover vegetables and lettuces. Chop up any leftover spinach, arugula, kale, or veggies and toss them in before they go bad. Sometimes it’s nice to add some texture to your soups.
4 5
If you have a few lemons around, squeeze a splash here and there into your soups. I always find that lemon juice gives soups a refreshing twist. Most importantly: always let soups cool for a bit—at least 10 minutes—before putting in a blender. Hot soups will rise up and explode from the blender!

BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND COCONUT SOUP
BACON, KALE, AND POTATO SOUP
Thanksgiving-time in the United States always reminds me how versatile butternut squash is. You can roast it, boil it, steam it, and purée it into soups just like this one. It also freezes well, so you can stock up over the Autumn and stash them in the freezer to make this all-year-round (or just find it in the frozen food section!)
Yes, I’m Irish, and yes, I live the potato-eating stereotype. Potatoes, like Guinness, are just in our blood. I just love potatoes, and forgive me for tooting my own horn, but I am pretty darn good at making anything that has them in it. In this recipe, the salty bacon, the cabbage-y flavor of the kale, and the hearty potatoes hit me right in my Irish heart.

10STEPSTO HOLISTIC LIVING by Dr. Jonathan Leary
Photography - Rod Foster
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR STRESS Ninety percent of our stressors come from conditions we have no control over. Write out all of your stressors and see what ones you can ACTUALLY CHANGE. If you are able to put your focus on only the ten percent that you have control over, then you will find tremendous self-growth & relief. It is a waste of energy to stress about things in your life you have no control over.
REWIRE YOUR BRAIN Start your day with positive affirmations. Set goals and reflect on what you are grateful for. Every emotion and thought stimulates different hormones in the body. When these hormones fluctuate, especially over an extended period of time, it changes your genetic makeup. Being positive and optimistic is more powerful than you might think.
ELIMINATE INFLAMMATION Pain and disease cannot exist without inflammation. Which is why we need to be aware of and avoid foods that cause inflammation. Some examples of pro-inflammatory foods: gluten, dairy, soy, sugar & trans fats. Keep consumption of these foods to a minimum or avoid altogether if you can.
CHECK YOUR PRODUCE BAR CODE BEFORE YOU BUY IT If the first number in a barcode is a ‘9’, that means the product has been organically grown. If it starts with an ‘8’, that means it has been genetically modified. Lastly, if the barcode starts with a ‘4’ then it has been sprayed with synthetic fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides. Signs and labels can be deceiving. It is of utmost importance to know what you are putting into your body.
EAT MORE FAT Increasing your consumption of healthy dietary fats will actually help you burn fat and lose weight! Try including some of the following into your daily diet: Avocado, raw nuts (specifically walnuts, macadamia & pecans), small wild fish (sardines & anchovies), olive oil (never heated), coconut/coconut oil, flax and chia seeds.
125
BHL
“Start your day with positive affirmations” HYDRATE YOUR BODY It is very rare that I come across a patient that is drinking enough water. This is, single handedly, one of the most important things that you can do for your health. Try to drink one liter of water for every fifty pounds of body weight every day. Carry a water bottle with you at all times to help you reach your goals. You will be amazed by how much healthier you feel.
TAKE A DAILY PROBIOTIC The more good bacteria you consume, the healthier your gut flora becomes and the healthier you will be!
TAKE CARE OF YOUR PAIN Stop “treating” your symptoms and instead, aim to “fix” the root of the problem. Pain is usually the result of an underlying biomechanical issue. Anti-inflammatory and pain medications will help with the discomfort, but will not fix the problem. Imagine you have a leaky pipe in your home and you clean up the water on the floor with a mop. The leak is the issue, not the water on the floor. The floor will continue to be wet if you don’t fix the leaky pipe. Just the same goes for physical ailments. The lower back pain is not the issue, the faulty biomechanics is the problem, and the pain is the result.
STRETCH, STRETCH & STRETCH SOME MORE Stop skipping out on your stretching routine. Movement cures. To put it simply, the better your body moves the better it will function. If everyone spent as much time stretching as they did at their desk, seated or working out, there would be less injuries and less pains.
DON’T FORGET TO RECOVER Every day we put mental, emotional and physical stress on our bodies. Yet, very rarely do I see individuals focus on body maintenance until they have experienced an injury. Preventative care such as: chiropractic, physiotherapy, acupuncture, and proper exercise, along with a balanced diet and sleep, will decrease your risk of injury and also help offset the stress you put on your body.

on’t judge a book by its cover. Famous words that we have heard a thousand times… but are we really listening to them? The simple lesson: look beyond outward appearances before you determine value & worth. The more significant lesson is that, while you may make a prejudgment that ends up being correct, it can prevent you from going beneath the surface for a deeper and more complete appreciation. It would behoove you to keep this sound advice in mind when you meet the enigmatic Andrew Neighbors. Andrew is best known for vlogging on YouTube, where he has made a genuine connection with his 80,000+ followers by sharing personal stories of his life. While it is easy to feel like we know Andrew from his videos because he connects so easily with his viewers, when you sit down with him, that in-person connection reveals a much broader and deeper side of himself than this charismatic YouTuber leads on. In an unexpected twist for the Vlog-osphere, Neighbors works as an optometrist… and even though that is a very respected career that affords him the title ‘Doctor,’ he does not define himself by his profession. Andrew defines himself by his passions for helping people, making people laugh and creating experiences that allow people to see the world in a different way. Neighbors’ goals and expectations for himself require him to constantly push outside of his comfort zone. It is this persistent desire to encourage others to see the world differently, while making them comfortable enough to do so, that makes Andrew so unique, and makes us at BHL love him so much. In an inter view with Neighbors, he said “If somebody can look into my life and see that I live a gay, professional lifestyle and I can normalize that for that person and make that person feel more comfortable about who they are, then I’ve set out to do exactly what I wanted to do.” It’s this mentality that carries Andrew through life to different experiences. While that will always likely include YouTube and Optometry, he never wants to limit himself to those outlets. Andrew is already inspiring people; by making people laugh, by challenging everyday thoughts, and by constantly creating new content. With an open mind, he is someone who will continue to inspire and surprise. Freeing himself from predetermined paths & restrictions, what is next for Andrew Neighbors? Beverly Hills Lifestyle is honored to be a part of his journey and we will continue to follow him and share updates, just as Neighbors will continue to create thought-provoking content. He helps remind us about the merits of never judging a book by its cover. He uses his charisma to highlight people who we think we know, but haven’t taken a closer look at… he makes their stories relatable, interesting and inspiring. Andrew’s heart, and his content, are redefining the world through a lens of kindness, compassion and humor... and we think he is the perfect person to carry that banner.
