Notes:
This complicated pocket watch comes from the direct family heirs of Jules Grossmann, also known as Julius Grossmann, 1829–1907, who was a pivotal figure in the evolution of horological education and theory, particularly within Switzerland.
Life and Career
Born on July 28, 1829, in Eberswalde, Germany, Grossmann began his career apprenticing with a pendulum clockmaker in his hometown. Seeking to deepen his expertise, he moved to Berlin to work under a master watchmaker. His quest for knowledge led him to London in 1851 and subsequently to Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where he recognized the importance of theoretical knowledge in watchmaking alongside practical skills.
Contributions to Horological Education In 1868, Grossmann was appointed as the director and sole instructor of the watchmaking school in Le Locle, Switzerland. Under his leadership, the institution became a cornerstone for horological education, emphasizing both practical craftsmanship and theoretical understanding. His dedication to teaching and curriculum development significantly influenced the standards of watchmaking education in Switzerland. Collaborative Works and Publications Grossmann’s commitment to horological education extended beyond the classroom. Collaborating with his son, Hermann Grossmann—who became the director of the watchmaking school in Neuchâtel in 1888— they authored several influential texts.
Notably:
– “Lessons in Horology” (1905): A comprehensive guide covering the principles of time measurement, mechanics, and watchmaking techniques.
– “Horlogerie Théorique” (1911–1912): A two-volume work delving into the theoretical aspects of chronometry and applied mechanics.
These publications have been instrumental in shaping modern horological education and are still referenced by watchmakers and scholars today.
Legacy
Jules Grossmann passed away on February 27, 1907, in Le Locle, leaving behind a rich legacy in horology. His emphasis on integrating theoretical knowledge with practical skills set new standards in watchmaking education. The methodologies and curricula he developed continue to influence contemporary horological training programs.
While not as widely known as some of his contemporaries, Grossmann’s contributions have had a lasting impact on the field of watchmaking, particularly in fostering a comprehensive approach to horological education that balances theory and practice.
10 000 – 15 000 CHF

Dimensions: 51 mm
Weight: 110,2 g

to 1913, one book by Jul. Grossmann and Herm. Grossmann Horlogerie Théorique, volume I and II, inside of them its handwritten A ma chère fille Lucy souvenir affectueux de son papa, leaflet on the life of Jules Grossmann, one certificate from Ecole d’Horlogerie de Neuchâtel, made for Lucy Grossmann stating that she spent 5 years and 4 months and obtained on 18th September 1913 her diploma, and finally the bulletin of Observatoire Astronomique de Neuchâtel (Suisse) stating that her pocket watch chronometer No. 547 obtained first class ranking in chronometry
Notes:
It comes directly from the family heirs of Lucy Grossmann who was a pivotal figure in watchmaking, being the first woman to be admitted at the horological school of watchmakers in Switzerland.
Lucy Grossmann, like her father and grandfather, showed skills in mathematics and great manual dexterity from an early age. She was largely inspired by a prestigious family of Swiss watchmakers.
The town of Le Locle dedicated a square to his grandfather, Jules Grossmann, which now bears his name. It was on this square that Louis Gallet sculpted a bas-relief in his likeness in 1910, surrounded by his students.
Hermann Grossmann (1863-1928) father of Lucy Grossmann, followed in footsteps of his father, becoming a teacher and then
director of the Neuchâtel Watchmaking School from 1888 to 1928. Together, they wrote fundamental watchmaking books which were the basis of Lucy’s passion for watches.
Quite naturally, her father admitted her daughter as the first female student to attend the Watchmaking School he directed. She completed her entire apprenticeship there from 1908 to 1913, which culminated in a watchmaking diploma. Lucy was thus the first woman to obtain a watchmaking diploma in Switzerland.
“This is the first time that a young lady has attended a watchmaking school for five consecutive years for precision adjustment (…)” quotes from La Fédération Horlogère No. 74 on September 17, 1913 It was during her apprenticeship that she built a pocket chronometer from scratch, which was presented to the Neuchâtel Astronomical Observatory. It received a first-class certificate. “(…) Miss Grossmann will be the first woman to have made, by hand, a complete pocket watch, a perfect chronometer, obtaining a first-class certificate from an Observatory like ours, essentially chronometric” quotes again La Fédération Horlogère No. 74 September 17, 1913
These two watches, books and diploma are a testimony of Lucy Grossmann who can be considered as a pioneer in the watchmaking world. Even today it is not so often that women are at the forefront of watchmaking.

Notes:
The reference 3940 was produced from 1985 until 2007 and is considered today by many collectors as a key development in the history of complicated wristwatches at Patek Philippe and largely contributed to the revival of the Swiss Watch Industry.
In 1985, the first 25 watches from that reference were produced to celebrate the 225th anniversary of Chronometrie Beyer in Zürich. Our present example is from the first batch of 15 examples made with the German calendar and bears on the dial No. 12.
Philippe Stern released the reference 3940 to coincide with the 225th anniversary of the eponymous retailer and show support for his close friend Theodore Beyer. The first 25 models were made with customized and numbered dials for Beyer. Numbers 1 to 15 had a German calendar display like our example, while numbers 16 to 25 were in English. All watches were delivered to Beyer in May 1985. Appropriately, the first model with 770.001 movement was given to Theodore Beyer, the No. 2 to the famous collector from Basel Eugene Gchwindt on July 9 1985, and is now on display at the Patek Philippe Museum
The Patek Philippe Reference 3940, particularly the limited edition retailed by Beyer in 1985, holds a distinguished place in horological history due to its technical innovation, rarity, and the significant collaboration between Patek Philippe and Chronometrie Beyer
Origins and Significance
Introduced in 1985, the reference 3940 marked a pivotal moment for Patek Philippe as it transitioned from the earlier reference 3448, the first automatic perpetual calendar. This new model featured the ultra-thin automatic Caliber 240 Q movement, renowned for its micro-rotor design, which allowed for a slimmer profile without compromising functionality. The movement’s efficiency and elegance set a new standard for perpetual calendar watches. The limited edition of 25 pieces was specially commissioned to commemorate the 225th anniversary of Chronometrie Beyer, Switzerland’s oldest watch retailer since 1760. This collaboration between Philippe Stern of Patek Philippe and Theodore Beyer underscored the deep-rooted relationship between the two families, both stalwarts in the watchmaking industry.
Unique Features
Limited Production: Only 25 pieces were produced, with numbers 1–15 featuring German calendars and numbers 16–25 featuring English calendars.
Distinctive Dial: Each watch bore a champagne-colored dial with the Beyer signature and an individual number, a rarity for Patek Philippe timepieces. Caseback Engraving: The solid caseback was engraved to mark the special occasion, adding to its uniqueness and collectibility.
Legacy and Collectibility
Collectors highly prize the reference 3940 Beyer edition for its main historical importance, limited availability, and the exemplary craftsmanship it represents. Its creation during a time when mechanical watchmaking faced challenges after the quartz crisis in the 1970’s in the Swiss Watch Industry further cements its status as a testament to enduring quality and innovation in horology. In summary, our present example Patek Philippe Reference 3940 Beyer No. 12 is not just a timepiece but a symbol of collaboration, innovation, and the rich heritage of Swiss watchmaking.

Notes:
Developed and patented by Patek Philippe in 1996, the annual calendar is an emblematic complication of the brand. Requiring a single adjustment per year, at the passage from February 28 to March 1, this complication thus sets itself apart from the perpetual calendar. Introduced in 1998, reference 5036 is the second annual calendar manufactured by Patek Philippe. Succeeding reference 5035, the first model, it sets itself apart thanks to the moon-phase indication, a complication that was not present on the first annual calendar conceptualized by the brand. Mounted on a chic 5-link gold bracelet, this timepiece is an elegant piece that any connoisseur of fine watchmaking will appreciate.
