I hope you are doing well, enjoying summer, and in good spirits. In this issue of CAREGIVER Magazine, we are focusing on healthy living, staying active, and getting Better With Age. The Oklahoma Senior Games is a fantastic organization we are featuring in this issue. Their focus is on maintaining and regaining your health through activity and healthy competition with your peers. You’ll not only be more physically active but more active in your community.

It’s a winning combination. The 44th Annual Oklahoma State Fair Sr. Day is right around the corner on September 22nd it is one of my favorite days of the year. Come out, enjoy yourself and drop by our vendor table and visit with us!

If there has ever been a time in our lives to be grounded in our faith, balanced in our emotions, and focusing on being the best we can be, it is right now. Little changes in our activity level and food choices make a big impact on our health. This issue I’m sure will give you inspiration and encouragement to overcome the health challenges in your daily life.

We all have 24 hours in a day. As adults, we enjoy the freedom to decide how we will occupy those hours. For the majority of us, work and family take most of our day. A simple way to improve our lives can be adding in exercise resistance bands while watching the news. Or maybe better yet turning off the news and go for a walk. You’ve made two healthy choices in one simple action.

You have the power, strength, and ability to overcome whatever is hindering you from enjoying life to its fullest. You can be healthier. By incorporating healthier habits, better food choices, moving more, getting a little sunshine, and surrounding ourselves with people who are kind and good to us can make life truly great, no matter what is going on in the world around us. You are more powerful than you realize. You and only you hold the keys to your health and the choices you make for yourself regarding your well-being.

It was great getting to meet many of you at the Fun Day in June. It was a joyous event and if you didn’t attend you will have another opportunity on October the 14th at the Shoppes at NorthPark for the 2021 BETTER WITH AGE Health & Safety Fun Day from 9am-1pm as we celebrate life, see old friends and make new ones, mingle with the vendors all while enjoying music, entertainment, door prizes, food and having some good old fashioned FUN together with plenty of easy access parking and seating areas if you need to take a break from all the excitement! It’s a party for you, your friends and family and everyone is invited!

We are constantly looking for new ideas for stories about inspiring people and families. Our mission is to bring options and support to you and your family with content to help you achieve your best life, no matter your age, that highlights the value of your health and whole-body wellness through staying active and having a positive attitude. If you have story ideas call and let me hear them.

A GAME More than

Two champions of Oklahoma Senior Games are stories of dedication, competition, love of the game, and a lesson to us all. Meeting Bill Ruhman and Mary Almon, both Oklahoma Senior Games medalists, made me think of the U. S. Olympians I have met over the years. It always fascinated me that these talented athletes were not impressed by their achievements. They all quietly acknowledged their laudable accomplishments. The common denominators include a great work ethic, commitment to their goals and humility. Although Bill readily acknowledges his success in Senior Games, it isn’t bragging, it’s just the facts. Mary is focused on her friends more than the awards, although she does admit it’s nice to get them. Her love of bowling is rooted in the people more than the competition.

In 1946, Bill joined the Navy. After serving his country, he worked as the civilian bowling center manager at Tinker AFB for several years. In 1982, Bicentennial Lanes, in Ramstein, Germany, the largest military base in Europe, recruited Bill to be the bowling center manager. In 1985, while still serving in Germany, he received the Meritorious Award for Leadership and the 1985 European Bowling Center Manager of the Year award. In 1986, he returned to Tinker as the civilian bowling center manager, retiring after 25 years.

Mary married and raised four children. Mary has always been the caregiver of the family, immediate and extended, and for her neighbors and friends.

She lost her husband, Clyde, in 2005, and a son, Larry, died early this year. Dealing with the 8 CAREGIVER Magazine

profound loss of her son has been difficult. Mary stated that her family and her bowling family get her through each day. Mary said. “During the COVID-19 quarantine, I would sometimes pace the floor, praying for us to get back to “normal” and start bowling again. Talking to my bowling family every day kept my spirits up. We knew that all we could do was to wait it out.” Mary lives in Tulsa near her daughters, Sandy and Judy and her son, Chuck, spending a great deal of time with them. She also spends time as allowed, with her nine grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; and nine, plus one on the way, great-greatgrandchildren. She is an avid reader and loves James Patterson’s work.

Both Bill and Mary bowled in their first Oklahoma Senior Games event after turning 60. Mary’s family laughs and remarks that introducing her to bowling “created a monster since she has bowled in multiple weekly leagues since she discovered her love of the game.” In August, she’ll begin bowling three times a week on different teams and bowling Nationals for the 14th year; coincidentally, she’ll be 93 years old on August 19th. She commented she is slowing down some because she used to bowl at least 5 days a week.

Bill is an Oklahoma Senior Games Gold and Silver Medalist. He began his journey when his best friend Homer Brock Sr. talked him into competing in the Oklahoma Senior Games. Homer, his bowling and golfing buddy of over 40 years, was competitive (as is Bill) and wanted to win every event and travel to tournaments.

And, so the saga began; Bill now claims more than 150 gold and silver medals from Oklahoma Senior Games,

Tulsa Senior Games, Bartlesville Senior Games, Yukon Senior Games, Muskogee Senior Games, and Oklahoma Area Games. He has traveled to National Tournaments in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Jacksonville & Orlando, Florida; Nashville, Tennesse; Mobile, Alabama; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Corpus Christie, Texas; and Santa Clara, California. He earned a National Gold Medal in Baton Rouge.

Bill has two sons who have blessed him with nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two greatgreat-grandchildren. Bill stated, “Without the support of my family, my Senior Games family, and my bowling family, I don’t know how I would have survived. The key is to be involved in something you enjoy. Get active. Start moving! Don’t sit at home in that recliner, get out, make friends and keep your body moving and your mind alert.”

Bill’s goal each year is to compete in six events. This year he is competing in: bowling, singles and doubles; horseshoes; shuffleboard; pool; golf and washers.

Washers? Well, I looked it up. Washer pitching is a game very similar to horseshoes, involving teams of players that toss washers towards a box or hole.

July 31, 2021, Mary received two awards from the Oklahoma Bowling Association. In the introduction, the presenter remarked on Mary’s beautiful smile and how she welcomes and encourages everyone joyfully, even her opponents. She was honored for a lifetime commitment to bowling with the “SPIRIT AWARD FOR DEDICATED SERVICE” and the second award was for 90+ years of age with 30+ years of active bowling.

Bill has won gold medals and qualified for the National tournaments in seven age brackets. On April 11, 2022, Bill will be 95 years young and entering the next age bracket. He said, “The Senior Games are a major part of my life: bowling and golfing, making new friends and spending time with my “old” friends, keeps me engaged and loving life.” He was inducted into the Oklahoma City Bowling Hall of Fame (1988) and the Oklahoma Bowling Hall of Fame (1993). When asked if he had any advice to give, he smiled and said “Get out of that recliner! There is something for everyone. I like the competition among my age group, my peers. You see the same competitors at the tournaments each year.

You make lasting friendships. Going to Nationals every year makes a great vacation. Come join me and my friends.”

Mary’s focus is more local and she competes often. She loves the game; but more importantly, she loves people.

“My bowling family is as dear to me as my family; it’s different but very important in my life. I look forward to seeing them each week and at tournaments. We give comfort when needed; share laughs; encourage and root for each other, and are happy to be together.”

Oklahoma Senior Games offers something for everyone.

Wonder how well I would do at washer pitching?

Maybe, I could try shuffleboard. Just remember, you got to move it or you lose it. I am told to stay “young” you must be active, have a positive attitude and a cando spirit. I look to Bill and Mary for my inspiration!

DODGE THE SPIT BALLS Sometimes life throws us curve balls; sometimes they are spit balls! I put COVID-19 in the “spit” ball category. While we love our families, we don’t necessarily LIKE them all the time. This is one lesson I learned or relearned as a result of the quarantine.

My world is in the reshaping stage just like so many of yours are. Life is short and I have more life behind

me than in front of me. Therefore, I decided to make changes, not from desperation or unhappiness, but for more joy in my life. I strive to walk by faith daily.

Sometimes we need to reaffirm who we are and what we truly want from life. Something that is important to me, that is on my life’s top ten list of

needs or wants, may not be on someone else’s. It is individualized and unique only to me. What I found is that many things I thought were “MUST haves” turned out to be negotiable or got deleted. Funny how trivial some things become when faced with truly life-changing decisions.

my role in this situation?” Often our pride is our downfall. Be the first to apologize without expectations. I am not saying the hurts aren’t real. Many times, they are devastating. However, our pride should not keep us from offering and/or seeking forgiveness and reconciliation.

Happiness and joy are all in your perception. Wake up and start every day with gratitude and the intent to live happily. I have missed my target on occasion. I have let another’s negativity overflow and affect my attitude. At times, I am misunderstood; but it usually comes back to the fact my intention and my delivery of the message did not coincide. My joy and happiness are my own responsibility.

Don’t let the hurts, the anger from the past keep you from forgiving, rebuilding, and reconnecting with friends and family.

Take that leap of faith. God has a plan for us, let Him have control and follow His example of love. First, forgive yourself, and then forgive others. Be the person that reunites, reconnects, rebuilds, and reclaims the relationships you value in your life.

Considering a new furry friend?

Research has shown that pets provide a tremendous amount of physical and emotional benefits to older adults.

A pet owner gets physical activity by providing essential care to the animal and as a side benefit a more structured daily routine.

Pet owners also have greater emotional well-being. When my dad had open-heart surgery, he found the recovery time lonely because he could not get out. He adopted two cats.

He became so much happier. Just grooming and taking care of an animal gives meaning and purpose to life. I am glad he got the cats. When the pandemic hit we were trying to keep my dad at home more to protect him, his cats kept him company. Pets also give you something to talk about with other people. I can remember calling my mom and sometimes we ran out of things to talk about. I know when I call dad, he can always tell me about the cat’s antics and routines.

Even though a pet can be beneficial to an older adult, one must evaluate their living situation. Mr. Sims had dementia.

He also had two dogs.

The problem was that he kept feeding the dogs because he had forgotten that he had already fed them for the day.

Older adults need to be able to give their pets food, water and attention. It is also helpful if pets especially dogs can get some exercise. Choosing a pet that matches your physical ability and activity level is crucial. A neighborhood teenager could be hired to assist if that is something hindering an older adult from getting a pet.

Another issue to consider is safety. Many times smaller pets can get underfoot and not be as easily seen and a larger animal due to their size could bump into their owner both scenarios create a potential fall risk.

The behavior, grooming needs and demeanor of the potential pet must be considered.

As a pet owner, you must be able to bend down to provide food, water and clean up any potential messes. If you cannot bend easily a cat might be an option because food and water can be placed on an elevated surface. Most felines can self-groom and with the invention of self-scooping liter boxes, even that necessary task is more manageable.

Tending to the basic needs of an animal boosts your activity level.

Even the act of filling a water dish requires walking and stretching which is a low-impact way to improve your physical health.

Most shelters encourage an older person to adopt an older animal who is more willing to lounge around and isn’t quite as rambunctious. Some shelters will allow older individuals to foster older pets since they are much harder to get adopted. If the animal proves to not be a good fit the shelter will be able to take the pet back.

In this situation make sure you or someone can take the animal to vet visits as older animals may require more medical checkups.

A few final things to consider do you have a plan in place if your pet can no longer live with you in your home?

Whether due to your or their declining health or if the need arises for a care option outside of your home.

Mrs. White had two cats, but she was having increased difficulty taking care of herself. She was hesitant to move because she did not know what to do with her cats. Fortunately, many senior communities do allow pets if you can continue caring for your animal. You could still move with your pet, but you may have to hire someone to help with pet care.

Pet owners of all ages need to evaluate their budget and physical capability to ensure the pet is well taken care of. Pets can provide purpose and satisfaction in life. Another option is for a family member to get a pet and bring the pet over frequently. Many organizations also have therapy pets that they bring to your home.

Older adults should consider a furry friend if they can manage its care. An animal shelter or pet rescue may have your best new buddy waiting to come home with you. And you don’t have to limit yourself to only considering dogs and cats, feathered and finned pets provide their own form of companionship although not as snuggly.

While visiting the vendor booths a few interesting facts of information really stood out to me and I wanted to share a few with you that didn’t attend in June and remind you will have another opportunity in October.

In Oklahoma, there are over 65,000 adults above the age of 65 living with Alzheimer’s. By 2025 the number will increase to 76,000. Some signs of Alzheimer’s are withdrawal from work or social activities; confusion in time and place; or, a challenge in planning or solving problems. Check out the list on the Alzheimer’s Association website.

Areawide Aging Agency has respite vouchers for caregivers. They also have a paid work program for seniors 60+ that can help that individuals financially while providing companionship for a senior in need.

Areawide Aging Agency and United Way of Central Oklahoma publish a report, “Vital Signs: Aging in Central Oklahoma”. Some statistics on aging published in 2018 surprised me: • People aged 90 and up are the fastest-growing age group.

• Oklahoma ranks 47th in overall senior health in the country.

• 58% of Oklahomans aged 65+ reported themselves as able-bodied, meaning they live without disability and are able to live independently.

This is the 4th lowest rate of able-bodied older adults in the nation.

Pet Food Pantry can provide pet food at no cost.

The number of resources and agencies serving grandparents or other relatives raising children (GRRC) continues to grow.

High-powered vehicles require good fuel to operate at their best. Poor fuel will slow down even the fastest sports car. The same can be said about the human body and what we put in our fuel tanks. Certain foods and beverages can provide us with the energy to perform at our best. This is also true for our brains. We’ve listed several foods that can improve your mood and have you operating at peak performance. Be sure to consult your doctor before making major dietary changes.

Tea and coffee – According to The Journal of Nutrition, your morning cup of coffee or tea could provide more than a short caffeine buzz. A 2014 study¹ revealed that people who consumed higher levels of caffeine without going overboard (more than four cups) scored better on tests of mental function. Remember to mind the sugar and fat in creamers that will add calories while you are sipping your beverage.

Nuts – Is it coincidence that the shape of walnuts bear some resemblance to the brain? A nutritional study² found that a higher consumption of nuts was linked to better brain function in older adults. Nuts are also a good source of vitamin E which shields cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. A side note – while peanuts are a legume and not a nut, they are high in vitamin E and resveratrol, an antioxidant that may help prevent cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s.

Berries – Speaking of antioxidants, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries , blueberries, and mulberries are packed with anthocyanin, catechin, caffeic acid, and quercetin. The compounds in these brain boosters improve communication between brain cells, reduce inflammation in the body, helps the brain make new connections, and reduce cognitive decline.

Oily Fish – Fish full of omega-3 fatty acids have long been heralded for their positive effects on heart health, but what about our heads? Consumption of more oily fish has been linked to lower blood levels of beta-amyloid, the protein that is present in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Choose sustainable fish low in mercury such as salmon, cod, mackerel, herring, and sardines to put on your plate at least twice a week.

Broccoli – Broccoli and its cruciferous cousins—Brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, and bok choy— provide more than antioxidants and dietary fiber. They also contain large amounts of glucosinolates. When consumed, they turn into a compound that may reduce oxidative stress and lower the risk of neurodegenerative diseases, which includes Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease.

Dark Chocolate – Like many of the foods listed in this article, dark chocolate contains plenty of antioxidants. The reason for this is found in cacao. A 2013 review³ suggests cacao flavonoids encourage neuron and blood vessel growth in parts of the brain involved in memory and learning. A 2018 study⁴ supported that consuming chocolate with at least 70% cacao may improve brain plasticity, which is vital for learning. So it is true – everything is better with chocolate! Especially dark chocolate!

Crispy Salmon with Wilted Chard: Servings: 4 Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients: 2 tbsp champagne vinegar 2 tbsp finely chopped tarragon, plus leaves for garnish 2 tsp Dijon mustard 1 tsp honey ¼ cup plus 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil Kosher salt and pepper to taste 1 lb. swiss chard, stems cut into 2-inch lengths and leaves torn 1 large shallot, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced Four 5 – 6 oz salmon fillets

Directions: 1. In a small bowl, whisk the vinegar with the chopped tarragon, mustard, honey and ¼ cup of the olive oil. Season the vinaigrette with salt and pepper.

2. In a large saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. 3. Add the chard stems, shallot and garlic and cook over moderate heat, stirring occasionally, until the stems are softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chard leaves in large handfuls and cook until just wilted, about 5 minutes.

4. Stir in half of the vinaigrette and season with salt and pepper.

5. Meanwhile, season the salmon with salt and pepper. In a large nonstick skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil until shimmering.

6. Add the salmon, skin side down, and cook over moderately high heat, pressing gently with a spatula to flatten, until the skin is browned and crisp, about 3 minutes. Flip the salmon and cook until medium within, about 3 minutes.

7. Transfer the salmon and wilted chard to plates. Garnish with tarragon leaves and serve, passing the remaining vinaigrette at the table.

Plants To Attract Bees Bees are critical pollinators essential in the garden and flowerbeds. A yard with a healthy bee population will have larger crops of healthier fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and it is important to offer plenty of different plants that will entice bees to lend a helping buzz in the garden.

While bees will visit nearly any blooms to do their pollinating, certain types of plants with the right shapes and colors will be more attractive. Adding these plants to your yard will ensure a strong bee population nearby.

More Tips to Attract Bees

Just adding a few plants bees love to the yard will not increase the bee population dramatically, but if those plants are added thoughtfully and a few other simple steps are taken, the entire garden will be a buzz with busy pollinators.

Choose native plant varieties whenever possible as they will be more recognizable to bees and will be better suited to local growing conditions, soil and climate.

Add a bee house to the yard to give bees appropriate shelter and a place to build their hives so future generations will be available for more pollinating duties..

Diversify plantings to provide abundant blooms from early spring to late fall so bees have a continuous source of pollen and nectar in the same area.

Plant flowers and other bee friendly plants around the garden, such as in the corners or between rows, to encourage bees to pollinate fruits and vegetables too.

Create a varied garden with bee friendly plants in a variety of colors (bees are especially fond of yellow, blue, white, and purple) and at a variety of heights to attract more bees.

Minimize pesticide and herbicide use that could be detrimental to bees, and, if chemicals are necessary, be sure they are applied correctly.

Provide a source of water suitable for bees in the yard such as a shallow tray with several pebbles or rocks that will allow bees to reach the water safely.

Bees are the best pollinators available, and a bee friendly yard and garden will be one that is filled with fragrant flowers, vibrant vegetables, and flavorful fruits to enjoy all season long.

WILL ROGERS PARK SENIOR CENTER In the late 60s, before they put in “the” highway, my children would walk from our house on NW 27th near Madison Elementary School to Will Rogers Park and spend hours playing in the “river” and hiding in the “forest.” I had to drag them home. It was a wonderful playground.

Now, some 50 years later, Will Rogers Park is still magical!

There is a golf course, tennis courts, and beautifully landscaped grounds, a garden perfect for weddings, walking and running trails, picnic areas, well-equipped and designed playgrounds, an aquatics center and a senior center. The senior center was built in 1974 and is a vital part of the City recreation program. The park is an Oklahoma City treasure four CAREGIVER Magazine covers have featured this location as the botanical backdrop.

The mission of OKC Parks is to provide cultural, social and recreational experiences to our community so they can have the opportunity to cultivate wellness and enjoy a healthy lifestyle.

Everyone entering the Senior Center is greeted by LeCecilia “CC” Hoag, parks program specialist, a 15 year veteran of the program, and Betty Roberson, recreational leader 1, who has been with the program six years.

Anthony Sledge, Director of the Center, has been with the City of Oklahoma City of over 35 years, much of that time has been devoted to senior programs. Anthony, CC and Betty strive to ensure the programs are viable and vibrant.

From the variety of classes and the attendance, I believe the mission is being fulfilled.

You may choose classes from square dancing to playing bridge or yoga, Zumba or tatting. Tatting is a technique of handcrafting a particularly durable lace from a series of knots and loops; virtually, a lost art. The ladies who continue to keep the art alive are passionate about tatting and sharing their skills. Other classes include: chair yoga, Tai Chi, tap & jazz, community music club and the list goes on! out of the house, be with people and do something constructive.” A friend had a role in Arsenic and Old Lace and invited Maggie to the performance and that’s all it took. Maggie was hooked! She is a staple at Will Rogers Senior Center participating in the music club, drama; tap dance, art, writing, and much more. Realizing she needed to narrow her fields of interest, Maggie now concentrates on tap dance and playing the accordion.

She currently plays with a community band, “Shades of Grey.” At 72, she is a very busy lady with no plans to slow down. Did I mention she also teaches ballroom dancing? No chance for Maggie to be bored or lonely!

From experience, I know you cannot effectively serve seniors without loving them. They (we) know when someone is faking it and will call you on it. As we age our “fake meter” is connected directly to the mouth and has no filter. Or, at least that is what one senior lady told me and I believed her!

Sledge said, “At this point in my life I can, and do, relate to the seniors as peers. Serving our seniors is important and for me is a calling. Part of that mission is ensuring that all who come here are treated with respect and dignity. Everyone needs to have a purpose in life.

Knowing, every day, that I am making a difference in someone’s life, forging the social connections, helping them break out of isolation, and feeling that I am a part of something and serving the greater good gives purpose to my life.” For CC, well, she has a different take on seniors, “You can’t put a senior in time-out and you can’t ground them when they don’t “follow the rules.” All you can do is laugh and say ‘yes sir’ or ‘yes ma’am,’ knowing there is much to learn from them. How do I feel about the seniors? I love them.’

Remember When

Remember when we all played outside, even in the rain?

What games did you play? Everything seems more dangerous looking back now.

Remember when we played marbles? Playing marbles was serious business. I remember some of the guys getting in fistfights over the value of a certain marble.

Remember when we played jacks? You had to be accurate and fast to be #1.

Remember when we played Red Rover, Rise n’ Fly, Tag or Hide n’ Seek? Neighborhoods would gather, teams formed and strategies developed for winning.

Remember when everyone played baseball? In my youth, baseball was known as the National Pass Time – the World Series would basically bring America to a stand-still and glued to the radio!

Remember when we played Stick Ball?

Remember when you would get any board or stick to use as a “bat” and anything “round” was the ball (like a doll’s head that your brother tore off of your favorite doll)?

Remember when we played Hop Scotch? Every sidewalk in town had layers of chalk! Everyone tried to do better than their friends. That was a lot of moving as you “hopped” on every square.

Remember when we played street tennis? That is “poor man’s” tennis and popular in urban areas. Small town/farm kids played tennis in a parking lot or gravel road.

We Played Outside!

Remember when we played miniature golf? If your community didn’t have a miniature golf course, the neighborhood kids would make one in an open field. We took our golf just a seriously as any adult playing at the country club.

Remember when we would barrel race? (For city slickers, that’s when you and your horse would race against your friends to do a cloverleaf pattern around barrels then race to the finish line.)

Remember when we would jump into the lake or river and swim? Everyone swam.

Remember when Gorgeous George or The Crusher wrestled? My children were very young, but they loved Saturday morning wrestling. We would all pile in the bed and they would try the moves of their favorite wrestler.

Remember when jump rope competitions were intense? I was totally enthralled the first time I saw a jump rope club perform in Coffeyville, KS. It was during a parade and they did all these amazing things as they marched and jumped their individual ropes. At intervals, they used long ropes and performed “tricks” in teams of 2, 3, 4 or more.

Remember when baton twirling was a sport? From about 5 years old till I graduated, I wanted to be a twirler and lead the high school marching band! I took twirling lessons for four years and, you guessed it. I just never was good enough to lead the band – that didn’t stop the dream and practicing.
