I am so happy to introduce Mike and Martha Williams to the larger CAREGIVER Family. They are two of the most amazing people I have met in recent years. Their journey through caregiving with their first loves of their youth is both inspirational and gripping, while their love story with each other is worthy of the big screen. What an honor to have them on the cover of this month’s magazine! As with spring, which is on the horizon, they give hope that there can be love and light after darkness and sorrow.

Hello Caregivers, I hope you are enjoying the “extra” sunshine that our time change has given us. The anticipation of Spring, these sunny warm days are encouraging me to look ahead to Summer, Indian Summer and even the Fall.

But hold up. It is still Winter and I am already daydreaming of Indian Summer. While it is healthy to look ahead and plan for our futures, it isn’t the best idea to get stuck daydreaming - about what could be too far down the road - and not invest most of our energy in the present day of doing. It feels like only a few weeks ago we were celebrating the New Year and boldly declaring the changes we would implement to make our lives better in 2020. I guess my question to myself (and you) is how are we doing? If we give ourselves an honest review, where do we stand?

In 2015, after a pulmonary embolism from a blood clot in my leg left me on a walker, my goal was first and foremost to be thankful. I was alive, but I wanted desperately to regain my mobility (which at the time seemed far fetched). In the Spring of 2018, I decided I had to get serious about losing weight or seeing my children grow up would not be an option. This challenge to myself was needed and would only happen If I took action daily to reach my goals. I gave away so much of my personal power throughout my life due to self-sabotage and self-inflicted verbal abuse with regard to my appearance. I would say things to myself I would have never even thought about someone else. I know that is the main reason why I had never been able to lose weight before. I would set unrealistic goals and then when I could not reach them, I would verbally beat myself down.

So why has this time been different? Because, I have extended kindness and been more understanding to myself. I have not set goals on results, only goals on what I would (and would not do) daily. For instance, I do not weigh myself now because I tend to set unrealistic goals and an unrealistic time frame in which to reach them.

What I’m doing instead is to focus on what I am going to eat (and not eat) today and what type of activity I am going to incorporate into my day. Then repeat that the next day.

Over time, I no longer use a walker, or a cane. I am living the life I only could hope and pray for in 2015. No matter where your health is today, if you begin making daily positive changes and then repeat daily, in one month or one year from now, where will you be? Remember, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. National Nutrition Month is a great starting place.

I hope each of you can attend the Health and Safety Fair we are hosting on April 17th at the NorthPark mall. It is a wonderful way to find out about programs and businesses that truly can help us age better and safer.

Exodus of Emotion The root word for emotion is emote; meaning to move or move out. Currently, we see that as expression and releasing of feelings. Emotions are seen to have energy of their own, or even be energy. Emotions can often be felt in our bodies, especially when we are holding on to them, creating problems such as depression or anxiety, medical problems and cognitive difficulty. Trying to hold on to difficult emotions takes a lot of energy in itself. Being in touch with our emotions and being able to identify them for what they are can often be difficult - especially if we are engaged in chaos and confusion.

Thinking of March brings to mind the Ides of March, which was a time in history when chaos and emotions ran high. Nature brings us strong winds and storms during this season of the year as well. Both are good metaphors for what may be happening in this season of your life. As we experience the ups and downs of caregiving, sometimes it feels like we are in the middle of a storm of emotions, being swept away in the midst of it all. We know that in the course of caregiving it is not uncommon to experience a multitude of emotions, thus creating our own inner storms.

When looking at the landscape of our emotions, it is easy to see that our perception of situations is what colors our experience. Caregivers often fall prey to exhaustion and fatigue, which make us vulnerable, impacting our responses to our environment and events that take place during the course of a day. Mole hills may truly feel like mountains.

Our reality is made up from the sum of our experiences and how we view the world around us. That said, caregiving could present challenges you may never have faced before. Caregiving challenges us physically, emotionally, spiritually and cognitively.

So, I would like to invite you to participate in an activity designed to help you manage your emotions rather than them managing your life.

It’s been said that music calms the savage beast and that may well be. We now know that music reduces stress, bolsters the autoimmune system and can raise dopamine-enhancing feelings of wellbeing. Combined with creativity - which has similar benefits - it can facilitate a sense of relaxation, stress relief and feeling centered or grounded.

For this activity you need no artistic talent.

Supplies include a journal or some unlined paper, crayons and some markers. You will play some music of your choice. You will also need a place where you can draw that offers space and privacy.

The goal is to get your emotions out on paper and out of your body.

The process is to scribble or draw as you listen, just letting the music guide you.You may not be able to identify the emotion or

feeling but the process of moving the energy out on to the paper is healing in itself.

Letting go of difficult emotions is a central part of healing. I would suggest that you label the emotion and the date you released it. You might want to journal about the image as well, or how it felt to do the activity.

You might try scribbling with both hands at once. Just let the energy move through you.

You might also notice any sensations in your body before and after you do the activity.

As you begin to practice this activity routinely it will become easier to recognize the source of your emotions and work with them creatively rather than trying to mentally cope with those internal storms.

Another scam is phantom debt. You get a call stating you had a debt from years ago that you never paid.

Checking your credit is the best way to avoid this scam. If the debt is legitimate, it will be on your credit report. You can also ask for statement to be mailed.

Student loans, HANG UP. Publisher’s Clearinghouse telling you that you won money - but you have to pay something first, HANG UP. Grandparents are receiving calls (presumably from an ER or a jail). They will tell you to pay now or their family won’t be treated in the ER.

Hang up and call the child, the parents or other relative and verify!

It’s always best to come up with a family code - one that only family would know. Often, scammers will follow and scour social media sites for names or other public information.

Cassy Dixon with the OAG stated, “In all situations

with scam calls, emails, or messages, the best practice is to question everything. The scammer in question will often use fear tactics or sense of urgency to get you to give them personal information or money before you realize it is a scam.

The best way to protect yourself in these situations is, if you do not recognize a number do not answer it.

If you do answer it and they start asking for money or personal information, simply hang up.

We encourage consumers to report any suspicious calls, emails, or messages to us; even if they are uncertain if it’s legitimate or not. In addition to reporting the information to us, you can also report it to the Federal Trade Commission. The Federal Trade Commission’s website (www.ftc.gov) has a lot of great information on various scams and how to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consumers can always call our office (OAG at 405-521-3921) and leave any suspect phone numbers - along with information - on our voice mail system.”

In Sickness and In Health...

LOVING & LIVING THROUGH ILLNESS

Mike and Martha Williams share their story as their paths join to create something new.

MIKE AND CINDY Mike Williams married Cindy, his high school sweetheart, in 1969 at age 19. When you are 19, everything and anything seems possible. He was in the Air Force and he had a plan for their life. Life was good and their future was bright. The world was full of possibilities.

Like many plans, there were some unexpected twists.

Cindy was active and athletic, not letting juvenile diabetes stop her from living life. Although they thought they knew about the disease, neither of them expected Cindy to suffer as she did. She had neuropathy in both feet; her right leg was amputated below the knee; she wore a brace on her left leg to assist in walking; had kidney failure; and, a quadruple bypass.

Mike was gone serving his country a great deal of the time so was not there to help Cindy as the disease progressed.

He had planned to retire from the Air Force but Cindy’s deteriorating health dictated a change of plan. He left the Air Force after ten years and went to work at the Oklahoma Tax Commission. He retired from OTC after 25 years.

Mike never considered himself as a caregiver. He said, “My wife needed me. I was there for her. I was her husband; that is what a husband does; he takes care of his wife.” His caregiving journey started with daily shots; progressing to debridement (removal of damaged tissue or foreign objects from a wound) and dressing wounds for Cindy.

Nothing about these 35 years was easy. Mike is a planner; illness takes away the option to plan or schedule anything.

CAREGIVING Is… Caregiving has many facets, many shapes and forms. It can change minute-to-minute and it is often situational.

The role of caregiver can include dispensing medication; changing bandages; helping a loved one bathe and dress; and, perhaps, feeding them. Other caregiving focuses on being the “runner.” The runner does the grocery shopping; picks up medicine; does transports to doctor and medical appointments; goes to the bank; in general, running errands and organizing “life”. There is the caregiver who is the go-to person for social interaction; fun excursions; shopping; going out to eat or to a movie. Then there is the “sounding board” caregiver; the one your loved one calls when they need to vent. That person who can listen; laugh or cry; yell or stomp; makes the best hot chocolate; and gives the best hugs - depending on the situation.

A caregiver who helps the care receiver make it through the day - by providing emotional support without judgment - has a difficult and critical job. Then, there is the caregiver who makes, and stands firm on, hard decisions. Some are financial decisions; others are medical, ensuring that the best interests along with the wishes of the loved one are priority. There are also the caregivers who cook, clean, baby-sit or do laundry for the hands-on caregivers, providing hot meals, a clean house, clean clothes and peace of mind.

Each role requires different skill sets and is critical to the wellbeing of the primary caregiver and the care receiver. Too often, one person tries to fill all of these caregiver roles.

When care needs arise, it is immediate. Working fulltime, being the primary caregiver for Cindy and raising a child, his mental, emotional and physical health suffered. There were no respite options; no support groups; no home health agencies to help with daily care and no family nearby to help. Caregiving is lonely, with little time left for you.

Mike credits a chaplain for giving him insight and counseling that helped him cope with caregiving and the emotional roller coaster of daily life. It is critical to understand you are not the reason for the anger and resentment of the one suffering the loss of their health - and in many ways, their independence. The humiliation and embarrassment when care is personal and intimate can come out as anger at the one providing the care.

graduate assistant programs. Fred was the one who handled all the business for the family, from paying the bills, handling home and car maintenance to mowing the acreage.

In 2007, Fred wasn’t feeling well and finally got a doctor’s appointment. The diagnosis dealt a massive blow – lung cancer. The prognosis was grim, one year or less. And so began twelve years of full time caregiving. In all, Martha cared for Fred, her mother and her sister. Looking back, it seems overwhelming to her. It is a good thing that we cannot see the future.

MARTHA AND FRED Martha Williams married Fred Thompson in 1971 when she was 21 and still in college. They were married 34 years and had one daughter, Heather. Fred was a hard working, never-sick-a-day-in-his-life guy. Martha and Fred lived on acreage near Deer Creek in NW OKC, and he spent most of his time working outside. Martha received her Physical Education & English undergraduate degree from UCO (Central University back then); while earning her Master’s in Reading Education at Southern Nazarene University. Getting her Doctorate in Reading Education from OU, she worked and taught in OU’s

At first, Martha would prepare meals, provide snacks and set out medicine doses so Fred could stay home while she worked. The disease ravaged his body and soon, Martha took a leave of absence and stayed by his side virtually day and night. As the end neared, the doctors suggested Fred go home with hospice. Knowing nothing of how to care for Fred, or how hospice could help, they elected to stay in the hospital the last few days. He died eleven months after diagnosis. It was a hard fought battle.

Martha now faced life without her partner coming quickly to the realization that she had never been alone.

She was faced with the daunting task of learning what bills to pay and when, handling all the financial needs, even teaching herself to use a riding lawn mower mowing what seemed to be never ending acres of grass.

As she mastered each of these challenges, her world expanded. Learning and assuming these skills gave her great satisfaction and a sense of purpose as she and Heather learned to live without Fred.

Sharing the caregiving responsibilities of their mother, Bettie Smith, Martha and her sister (Lee Ann Franke) spent time with their mom sharing memories and telling stories. The sisters took their mom shopping, to the doctor, to run errands, out to lunch, etc. Bettie remained in her own home until the end. As her health declined, a home health agency helped care for her and then hospice came in for the last two weeks. Bettie was 85 years old when she died of congestive heart failure in 2016.

Martha and her sister, Lee Ann, were always close, spending quality time together, supporting each other in good times and bad. In early 2019, Lee Ann was diagnosed with cancer with six months or less to live. Martha was Lee Ann’s sounding board: that call-in-the-middle-ofthe-night when you can’t sleep person. Martha was the one who would laugh, cry, scream, yell, rant, tease, and love Lee Ann until she could get it together to go on. She was the emotional anchor during those six months. Lee Ann died in October 2019. Martha continues that role as emotional anchor as she “mothers” her nieces and their children.

A dozen years of caregiving. Martha feels that much of this journey could have been easier if medical professionals had prepared her and her loved ones for the inevitable. When medical personnel withhold information or give false hope, it is cruel. Trust in the care your loved one receives is paramount. Knowing what to expect and how the diseases would affect the patient’s, and in turn her own, life could have alleviated much pain and fear.

Some things she was not told: • Illness often affects personality changes • Anger is to be expected (from care receiver and caregiver) • Many doctors do not give you all the facts • Fear of what is coming cripples the spirit

As she walked by, Mike was entranced by her beautiful, big brown eyes. Martha and her niece were playing pool and, out of character for him, Mike asked if he might join them in a pool game. And, as they say, the rest is history!

Six months later, they were married.

The one stipulation Mike had when they were looking for a home was that it was big enough for a pool table. Guess what is the predominate feature of the living room? Yipe, you guessed it – a pool table! Mike loves to play pool, is very competitive and is quite good at it. Martha plays for fun and says she has never been very good at it!

In 2012, Martha suffered a stroke, which affected her sight. She had macular degeneration and the stroke affected the portion of the brain controlling vision. She lost an additional quarter of her sight in both eyes. She spent about two years being angry and feeling sorry for herself. She felt helpless and hopeless. Having her three advanced degrees was not a comfort; as she could

no longer read or drive, she soon retired from Redland College where she had taught for 15 years.

Then – a time transition – when your spirit tells you to get up and get moving. She found a wonderful organization, in New View Oklahoma. There she was introduced to virtually magical tools that have changed her life. Her counselor, Kathy, came to their home and together made that home a safe and functioning environment for Martha.

Technology has opened up many doors. She can use her laptop, read anything with the assistance of several devices and cook again - with the addition of raised orange dots on stove controls.

Martha credits New View and staff for getting her involved and more self-sufficient. Her independence is important. Mike is there to help. When they are walking outside she holds his arm or hand and he gently guides her over uneven terrain, steps, curbs, potholes. When they play pool, yes they play pool often, Mike will point to a ball so she can see where to aim. He still beats her, but she is there for the fun and companionship. It is obvious that they hold each other in great, loving esteem.

Their lives center on their children and each other.

Because of the hard journeys they have traveled, they choose to live each day to the fullest. Mike is the most social says Martha; just listening to their schedules I think that is a two-way street!

I observed that Mike was back in the caregiver role. He said, “No, I am her husband. I take care of her and she takes care of me.”

Life has been an emotional and physiological roller coaster for both of them. Yet they both are so alive.

It was apparent throughout out the interview process that Mike and Martha not only loved their first spouses, but also honor their memories. This certainly does not diminish the love they have for each other; it is cherished, as they know the pain of love lost. Their enduring smiles, spirit, and love, are an inspiration all who are tasked with giving care.

Both must learn to deal with it and not let the anger control life. All the emotions you are feeling – or that you felt – are normal. FINANCIAL FITNESS Watch For The Red Flags

The Oklahoma Department of Securities is seeking the help of caregivers in this state with an initiative to increase investor education. The following is a sad, but true, story that illustrates the need to be aware of financial red flags that may appear in the lives of those for whom you serve, especially in times of personal tragedy.

For many years, Mr. X, former Oklahoma City resident and registered securities professional, provided investment advice to an elderly Missouri couple. The husband passed away, leaving behind his widow and their developmentally disabled adult child. The funeral was to be held in Illinois four days later.

Mr. X and his associate, Mr. Y, traveled to Illinois from Oklahoma City. Their intention? To meet with the grieving widow, and to recommend the purchase of three variable annuities – investments that securities regulators consider to be highly complex investment products.

A variable annuity is an insurance contract through which

the purchaser typically invests in mutual funds. The value of the annuity will vary depending on the performance of the selected investment options. The terms of a variable annuity include significant surrender charges that decline gradually over a period of years (the “surrender period”), typically six to eight years, or as long as ten years. The purchaser must hold on to the annuity for as long as possible to avoid steep penalties for early withdrawals.

In short, variable annuities are generally considered inappropriate for seniors or individuals nearing retirement, particularly if such individuals need the ability to have immediate access to their money.

Mr. X and Mr. Y pre-filled all of the personal information required on the variable annuity applications. All that they needed was the widow’s signature. The information they disclosed on the applications was inaccurate, including the overstatement of her liquid net worth, causing the annuities to appear suitable for her to purchase. In reality, the widow was a conservative investor who was not

inclined to take risks and needed the ability to access her money when necessary.

Due to his long-term relationship with her family, the widow completely trusted Mr. X. She believed he would act in her best interest and that of her son. The day before her husband’s funeral, the widow met with Mr. X and Mr. Y in Illinois. On their recommendations, she purchased the variable annuities at a cost of approximately $864,000.

This illiquid investment amounted to over 90% of her liquid net worth, meaning she would not have immediate access to 90% of her money.

One source of the payment for the annuities included funds from the sale of securities in her husband’s brokerage account. Due to the surrender periods for each of the annuities, the funds were not available to the widow for eight years - unless she was willing to incur surrender charges for early withdrawals. The widow was not adequately informed, by Mr. X or Mr. Y, of the detrimental effects of the lengthy surrender periods or the high concentration of the illiquid annuities on her future financial needs.

Some 15 months later, again on the recommendation of Mr. X and Mr. Y, the widow invested in a municipal bond fund that could invest in bonds with a greater risk of default and was appropriate for aggressive investors able to withstand market fluctuations. The widow certainly did not meet this investor description.

Her two advisers also recommended that she sell the three variable annuities that she purchased the year before, on the day before her husband’s funeral, forcing her to incur surrender charges of approximately $82,000.

They then recommended that she use the proceeds of those sales to purchase three equity-indexed annuities that are even more complex investment products. The purchase of these three annuities subjected the widow to a new 10-year surrender period, again detrimentally impacting her ability to access her money when needed.

The two men received commissions of approximately $28,000 on these transactions. Mr. X and Mr. Y were subsequently sanctioned by state and federal regulators and are no longer in the securities industry.

Living with Purpose

Why Would I Need to Take Care of

Take Care Today, I want to share a personal story with you. My father, Joseph William Glavan, died January 11, 2020, at the age of 94. He inspired me in so many ways that I used to tell him,

“When I grow up, I want to be like you.”

Myself?

He ate healthy food, had a great sense of humor, played cards, went to museums, loved art shows and travel. He was in love with life. I could talk to him about anything because he was always up on current events. He believed exercising your mind was just as important as exercising your body because together, you would be in tip-top shape.

Perhaps his biggest inspiration to me was his healthy lifestyle. When he was in his early 40’s, he took up bicycle riding. He would ride between 25 to 50 miles daily. He did this for 40 years until, at the age of 84, he gave up riding his bike and began to go to the gym.

When he turned 91, his health began to deteriorate. But he still exercised and went to physical therapy. He never gave up and continued to live life to its fullest. Two days before he died, he began saying goodbye to everyone. He spoke to my siblings and me, and our spouses. He told the grandchildren goodbye. And then he said to my sister, “If anyone else calls, tell them I died!” His mind was clear and active until the very end.

He walked the treadmill, rode the stationary bike and lifted weights on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday he did water aerobics.

On Sunday, as always, he went to church.

My father, by example, taught us that a robust and wholesome lifestyle could be the key to a good and long life. And he did this before exercising and eating right became a popular thing to do. He used to say,

I would tell him this regularly until he died.

In Loving Memory of Joseph William Glavan, 94, born February 6, 1925, passed away quietly on January 11, 2020 in San Antonio TX.

I’ve thought about this a lot since my dad passed. God has given us this great gift called life and I wonder, why is it so hard for so many of us to take care of ourselves? Do we reason in our minds, “I feel good now; I am the picture of health. Why should I change my habits?” Then, over time, our habits change and we get high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease and we act shocked!

I share this story with you for two reasons. One, I wanted people to know about this great man. And two, I believe, as my father did, that we must make a conscious decision to take care of ourselves. We choose to eat the right foods, to exercise, and do the other things we know we must do to stay healthy. It’s a choice we consciously make, moment by moment, day by day.

We must take action on our own behalf because no one can make us do these things. And if you don’t, you should ask yourself – why?

Because there are no re-do’s in this life.

Documents that contain personal information should be shredded: birth dates, social security numbers, passwords, logins, pin numbers, account numbers or any other strictly confidential information that could be used to gain access to your financial accounts or be used to create a credit card or loan need to be shredded. Below is a list of some examples of items you’re just better off shredding.

• Employment documents or paperwork – Paperwork that has identifying information, applications, reviews, or other work records.

• Financial transactions, statements or other financial paperwork – ATM slips, bank or credit card statements, credit reports, pay stubs, canceled checks or check books, any documents that contain account numbers, credit applications, tax forms, etc.

• Travel documents – Old airline tickets, itineraries, luggage tags, expired visas or passports • Medical paperwork – Anything that may have identifying information or personal history etc.

• Paperwork pertaining to your home – Utility bills, old leases, subscriptions, expired insurance paperwork etc.

Take your identity protection seriously. Criminals look for easy ways to make a fast buck and too many times everything they need to buy a car or obtain a credit card in your name is easily found - once a week sitting in your trash can on the curb.

So when in doubt don’t toss it, SHRED IT! SAVE FOREVER Keep documents related to major life events – birth, marriage, divorce, and death. Lock up securely: • Birth certificates or adoption papers • Social Security cards • Citizenship papers or passports • Marriage or divorce decrees • Death certificates of family members • Also, keep auto titles and home deeds stored safely for as long as you own the property.

Creating Value as an Elder in Society

By Michael Edward Browning A lot of us who have lived through, or at least heard legend of, life in the ‘50s have long-known the phrase “American Dream”. We each have a slightly different definition perhaps but we all basically know what is meant. Lately many of us have been waking up from this dream state to realize that our cherished retirement phase just might be only a foggy remnant of a once clear picture.

So where does that leave many of us, advancing in our years? Looking for a job, that’s where.

“Fall in love with what you do for a living. I don’t care what it is. It works.” ~ George Burns Plenty of us enjoy the activity of work. Occupation.

Being occupied. Even if we are already financially comfortable, many of us will continue to contribute as long as we are able (like cigar puffing centenarian Burns). We know what the concept of work ethic consists of and we like the satisfaction of a job well done. We have experience.

In the subsection Choices under Where Do You Choose To Work in the international bestseller Elder’s Rock, Harvey W. Austin, MD reminds us, “As an Elder, you have the power to transform lives by your actions…both

by the creativity of your speaking and the space-creation of your listening.

This is true regardless whether or not you are in a position of authority.”

In the next part, Service, he quotes Conscious Living, Conscious Aging author Ron Pevny, noting, “Whether it is volunteer work, working for an income, an avocation, social activism, grandparenting, or spending special time serving as mentor to a young person, the form of how we serve others is not nearly as important as the intention, wholeness and self-awareness behind it.”

The subtitle of the book is Don’t Just Get Older: Become An Elder. Perhaps nowhere is this better applied than in the workplace. Mentorship, like Elderhood, is a fading concept of immense societal value. Many of those who stand to inherit and continue the earth crave experienced insight to life’s little (and big) questions. We want them capable and able to handle what life delivers, for their sakes and ours.

THE OH, SO AMAZING

By Lisa Sydnor That would be the “O” sisters, Ovidia Thomas and Orienthia (Rienty) Holmes! The infectious laughter, beautiful smiles and the genuinely grateful attitude of these gracious ladies give no hint to the caregiving circumstances, fear, stress and heartbreak they have lived through. Don’t be deceived by the laughter – they choose to face life’s challenges with a smile and powerful sense of humor.

Ovidia knew exactly what she wanted to do in retirement. For three years she planned, worked and prepared for retirement. In May 2013, the sisters opened a daycare in their home. They were licensed to care for up to seven infants and toddlers. They were in seventh heaven caring for and loving “their” babies.

Anna Murray, their lively 93 year-old mother, had been enjoying a romance while still living independently in Delaware. Their brother, George, was Anna’s primary caregiver. George visited Anna every day, took her to doctor appointments, grocery shopping, running errands, etc. When business required him to be out-of-town for several days, Rienty was happy to go back to Delaware to visit and care for her mother.

Rienty’s daily routine was to talk with her mother every day. There did not seem to be any major issues.

Once in a while mom was disoriented, but quickly 30

snapped back. However, within hours of arriving there was an incident. Anna had gone to visit her boyfriend, who lived in the same apartment building.

Upon returning to her apartment, Anna demanded to know where her mother was. Not getting a satisfactory answer, Anna went back to her boyfriend’s apartment asking what they had done with her mother. It took a great deal of time and conversation to get Anna oriented.

That evening Rienty called Ovidia and they made the decision to move mom to Oklahoma. Done! One phone conversation and in an instant, their lives changed dramatically.

Now they had seven babies - and their 93 year-old Mom. It was quickly apparent that Anna required fulltime supervision and monitoring. The parents of the little ones were given notice that the daycare would close June 1, 2016. In a few short weeks, with tearful goodbyes, the little ones left their loving arms.

Anna was in good health, smart, feisty, opinionated, sharp-tongued, outspoken, very sneaky - and a runner! Given half a chance, she was gone!

At times Anna would also become aggressive and combative. The sister’s lived in a constant state of readiness; alert to movements and always aware of Anna’s behavior.

furniture stacked and wedged into the archway as a barricade because Anna was up all night trying to find a way out. One morning as they watched the previous night’s video the ladies were astonished at the lengthy inspection Anna gave the barricade. This was repeated for a couple of nights. Then, she punched through the barricade reached out and knocked the 54” TV off the stand. Then, seemingly self-satisfied, she went back to bed!

Leaving her at an adult care center proved to be chaotic and stressful for both center staff and the sisters. After all, Anna was an escape artist! As soon as she saw an opportunity, she would be trying to leave.

People suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s may become more confused as evening progresses.

This is known as Sundowner’s Syndrome (or sundowning). It is felt by the medical community at large that shadows, gloom, and losing daylight are contributing factors.

Anna exhibited many symptoms of Sundowner’s.

They knew nothing about Alzheimer’s, dementia or Sundowning. It was very difficult to keep Anna safe, making daily life challenging and emotional for the sisters. For Rienty, coming to terms with the fact that mama did not recognize her was crushing.

They did not know there were available resources.

A neighbor told them about a Sunbeam Caregiver Support Group. They went to a meeting where they met Jessica Welp; who literally “hooked them up” with resources that truly changed their lives.

Safety was a primary concern. The security system and cameras installed for the daycare were a Godsend. All doors had to be double key deadbolt locked! Anna would roam the house and there was no telling what mischief she would be up to or where she would go. Those cameras certainly came in handy!

concerned about or thought they would need. It soon became a necessity for Ovidia and Rienty. Having some time away from their mother enabled them to continue the rollercoaster ride of stress and emotion they experienced 24/7.

When family or friends would offer to stay so they could get a break, the ladies would greet them at the door giving relevant instructions, suitcases at their sides. Just like Anna, they were out the door and gone. Perhaps escaping runs in the family! They literally vanished from the premises - much to the surprise and dismay of those left to cope.

These two will tell you that they are opposites. Ovidia believes that everything has a place and everything should be in its place; she is a no-nonsense, pragmatic, list maker. Rienty is a cuddle, smile, cajole, wheedle, sweet talk and serve nurturer - so what if the dishes are still in the dishwasher? She is a free spirit. Needless to say, they have bumped heads a few times. But they found their stride; dividing the duties, capitalizing on their strengths.

to grieve the loss of their mother. Since then, Ovidia has become the co-facilitator for a Sunbeam Family Services support group in Choctaw, finding the role very fulfilling. She encourages everyone to find a good support group. She stated,

“You are not in this alone; what you are feeling is “normal”; learn all you can about the disease - and take care of yourself.”

Rienty is a Senior Companion with Sunbeam Family Services. She helps at the Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Adult Day Services five days a week. She assists with activities and cares for her assigned seniors; talking, laughing and in general, pampering them. She says not only does she love what she is doing, she can’t think of anything that she would love more.

Two sisters, two personalities, two skill sets - two ways to work through their grief. They have each found their niche. What they have in common is a great sense of humor, the knack for telling a story - emphasizing the lighter side in serious, heartbreaking scenarios.

By telling their story, the hope is others will know that all the emotions are normal; anger, frustration, depression, impatience, isolation, hopelessness and sadness. Feel them, and then let them go.

Do not get mired down – this is where the support groups are so helpful. It is critical to your survival that you find a support group that fits YOUR personality. It may take going to several different groups to find the right fit. Search for the group where you feel the trust and compassion. No pity, recriminations, or judgments – just understanding and empathy!

Is The Idea of A Natural Death Evolving?

The Toughest of Topics

In recent issues, we have discussed the state of hospice, remembering what it was like twenty years ago and then comparing it to now. And now, not only are there many more hospices than ever before, we even have in-patient hospice facilities. But the core problems we faced so long ago are still with us today.

Why? Why is our culture only slightly more knowledgeable, but no less comfortable, about the death and dying experience than we were two decades ago?

When a patient dies, physicians still feel as if they have failed them and that may not change. Really, how many patients must you lose before your heart loses its elasticity, and the ability to empathize?

Let’s face it, our medical community is only doing what they have been trained to do. But physicians and their patients rarely discuss end of life issues. And often, patients are referred to hospice too late.

We have looked at what hospice is, and what it’s not.

It’s now time to consider what it could be. But we can’t really contemplate that future until we address the core problem - how we, as a society, view death. In a way, we find ourselves in a cultural “Catch 22”.

As our medical community attempts to defy death, the American attitude is to deny death, as if we can somehow avoid it.

As I worked with my co-authors on Hospice, A Labor of Love twenty years ago, I wrote that - if we are to reclaim the true spirit of the death and dying experience - we must change our culture, our mindset. A daunting task, no doubt, but that is where we must begin.

To give you an idea of just how far we have to go, consider this. A 2017 study in the journal Health Affairs found that only one in three adults have an advanced directive, or a living will with end-of-life instructions, or a power of attorney. Even fewer have planned their funeral. And only 21% have spoken to their loved ones about their last wishes.

In contrast, generations ago people typically died at home, surrounded by loved ones. It was an intimate affair; sorrowful but not dreadful (not fearful) where even post mortem care was often provided by the surviving relatives. Now, the vast majority of deaths occur in hospitals or nursing homes, not in our family homes.

While there is ample evidence of the good hospice does, a case could be made that, where it concerns education, the hospice industry has largely failed. At least in a general sense. And if patients are routinely referred too late, what does that mean for quality of life (at perhaps its most meaningful moment)? And that’s what we’re really talking about - comfort care for the dying.

Maybe this failure of education is what has led to laws that are gathering momentum in America: PhysicianAssisted Suicide (PAS), or what is increasingly being called “death with dignity” and “medical aid in dying”.

Currently, eight states have death with dignity statutes.

This alternative has been picking up steam for years now and appears to be at odds with the hospice philosophy. Or is it?

Are we evolving to a position where the idea of a natural death now includes physician-assisted suicide? Is it our fear of death, of the unknown, of pain and suffering, that

makes us (re)consider something that, until recently, was a socio-religious taboo?

Central to these discussions has been my friend, Cindy Longanacre, co-owner of Physician Housecalls. She maintains that, when people seriously consider the end of life, the one thing that they really want is control.

And what is physician assisted suicide if not the idea of taking control of your own death?

“You can’t control that you are going to die,” she said, “but you can control the timing of your death, and the manner in which you die. For better or worse, having control is what is most important to people, even if that means choosing how they die.”

“I don’t know the numbers,” she continued, “but I’ve worked in healthcare, and especially hospice, my whole life and I am definitely sensing a change in attitude. I believe that a large percentage of people, today, would choose [PAS] over a prolonged death that included great suffering. At the very least, they would like to have that option.”

“It’s not just the actual mechanism of death itself, or the timing of it. There is planning to consider as well.

Not just for yourself, but for your family. To be able to die peacefully, you need to know that those left behind aren’t burdened with your final arrangements while they’re emotionally vulnerable.”

National health care organizations like the American Public Health Association, among others, increasingly support “medical aid in dying” and reject the tarnished term; assisted suicide. The American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine has adopted a neutral policy on this. That is - to put it mildly - a stunning shift in philosophy; this evolution would have been unthinkable to hospice doctrine twenty years ago.

From what I see, this shift has come about for one simple reason. More and more people, after experiencing pain and anguish over the death of a loved one, have concluded that there is no point in needless suffering. This is an enormously complex subject, worthy of serious debate here in Oklahoma Therefore, this discussion will continue in Caregiver, where we are committed to discussing the toughest of topics.

Yesterday it was seventy-four degrees; today it will bottom out around twenty-six. See, just amazing!

We can have a month of drought and the next month; one hundred year floods or ice storms that wipe out electric grids and send us scampering for any generator we can get our hands on. Then there’s the scorching summers when not much moves between noon and evening.

But, we absolutely positively have the finest weathermen on the entire planet! They are the most competitive, energetic, long-winded meteorologists ever! If you want to get a good, heated discussion going just ask a group of us who they think does the best weather forecasting and then sit back to watch the fireworks begin.

Oklahomans don’t have to wait for political years to get after it; they are engagingly loyal to their favorites (even their favorite weather people).

They have become like family members, talked about, worried over, praised and their private lives are open somehow. I personally know nothing about any of their private lives and I don’t have any idea how you people are so updated on what’s going on in the privacy of their own homes. But when grandmothers start shaking their heads and worry lines appear on aged foreheads over some current crisis in their weatherman or woman’s private business, then I assume they must know what they are troubled about.

Personally, with eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, I don’t have time or energy to be too concerned about the television weather people. I don’t want to cause them any alarm but I live with enough drama to keep me occupied. I am grateful for the lifesaving information they espouse but sometimes I could do without hour after hour airing.

I find it amusing to hear comments from new inhabitants who are quick to laugh over the almost instant school closings, church cancellations, etc. but they change their minds pretty quick when the tornado sirens start going.

That’s another reason I’m so utterly proud of my Oklahoma compatriots.

When all these natural disasters kick our Okie heinie’s to kingdom come, then you see our citizens crawling all over each other to aide and assist those in need. Another one of those silver linings.

Well, coffee has gotten cold while I rambled on but I have enjoyed our visit to “the lighter side”. Here’s hoping we get one more day of miserable gray weather. I do love it so…

Coconut The Anti-Viral Oil Superfood

I use it for so many things, it’s nearly always in my cupboard. My morning coffee gets honey, cinnamon and a spoonful of virgin coconut oil stirred in. That combo kind of “sweet greases” my day. This ‘good’ fat can reduce abdominal body fat, substantially reduces hunger and encourages the burning of fat.

Eat this fat to reduce your body fat, did you catch that?

As far as novel coronas go, Lauric acid (C12) and it’s derivative monolaurin are long known in many studies to have vibrant antiviral activity. In most cases, a “full” or “broad” spectrum product containing a full array of cannabinoids (with at least a touch of THC) usually provides the most notable result. A great primer on the tumor, cancer and chemotherapy focus of this quarter’s Seeing Clearly 20/20 screening is the clip on YouTube called, “Dr. Christina Sanchez Explains How Cannabis Kills Cancer Cells”. It outlines the conclusions of a Spanish biology researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid doing studies on how THC affects tumors, specifically how cannabis targets abnormal cells while ignoring healthy ones. This is in contrast to chemotherapy, which destroys cells indiscriminately. Instead of wholesale slaughter, cannabinoids simply deliver the message to malfunctioning cells that “apoptosis” (cellular death, the self-destruct sequence) is an appropriate action to take. When cells won’t

die, tumorous growths increase in size. Cannabinoids just let them know that it’s time.

Remember When?

Remember When it was common sense to look both ways before crossing the street?

Remember When no one would have been careless enough to walk in a busy parking lot reading a book, yet today who hasn’t had someone walk in front of your vehicle while on the phone texting?

Remember When carpal tunnel was reserved for

people who had typed for 40 years? So, how are kids developing carpal tunnel these days? Oh! Right! Texting!

Remember When kids played outside practically all year long - with no devices, joysticks, earbuds or air conditioning?

Remember When we had only five channels on the television? Nowadays, with over 1500 channels, anybody can develop carpal tunnel just trying to find your favorite shows!

Remember When you could load up the car - or

the back of your truck - with as many people that could fit? It used to take seven cars with sevennine people in each (including babies) for my large family to get to our favorite park on the 4th of July to celebrate Granny’s birthday party. Remember When bottled water was just hitting the

stores and everybody said, “Nobody’s going to BUY water!” Right?

Remember When opening the bottle of aspirin cured

your headache instead of the child proof cap making it worse?

Remember When no one reminded us to eat our veggies because we all had a garden?
