Hello Friends, A dear friend recently told me, “Your magazine is your “love hug” to its readers.” I agree with her. I do hope each new issue and its content feel like a warm hug to your heart and soul. I pray it strengthens and supports you in your caregiving journey. I hope it makes you think, and encourages you to research options and the ideas presented. I hope it reassures you that you’re not alone. I hope it brings a smile to your face. I hope Remember When takes you for a stroll down memory lane. The writers are not only gifted journalists but are experts in their respective fields. I hope the information and practical sound tips and advice give you comfort and guidance.

If we’ve met in person, there’s a good chance you received a hug. I’m a hugger and I like to give them and receive them. I know the true value of hugs and you may not realize this - but there is a lot of well-researched scientific data validating the power of a hug.

Hugs help facilitate open and honest communication. Hugs build trust. Hugs boost oxytocin levels which reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Hugs increase serotonin levels elevating mood, immunity, and happiness. Hugs boost self-esteem they make us feel special and loved. Hugs teach us the value of being able to give and receive blessings.

So many people are great at taking care of others but when someone tries to return the favor they don’t receive as good as they give. In this season of love remember to truly keep the love, peace, and harmony flowing you can’t give like a fire hydrant and receive like a clogged drain. When people you’ve helped in their time of need offer help in yours, graciously and enthusiastically say yes!

We can hardly wait to see everyone. Our BETTER WITH AGE FunDays are great places to make new friends and secure a few hugs or handshake the day away if that’s more your style. The 3rd Annual Del City FunDay is Wednesday, March 20th, from 9a-1p at the Del City Community Center.

We’ll celebrate life, see old friends, make a few new ones, and mingle with the exhibitors; all while enjoying great music, entertainment, door prizes, food, and having some good old-fashioned FUN together. There is plenty of easy-access parking and seating areas if you need to take a break from all the excitement! It’s a party for you, your friends and family.

Being isolated isn’t good for our well-being. We all need camaraderie and friendship.

May God bless you and your family. I wish you much peace, love, and happiness.

his is a real-life love story with a real-life journey; a story of two people committing daily to love and honor their spouse and work through all life’s challenges. Chuck and Tonya Garrett believe in love. They believe love is embracing dreams, hopes, fears, and hurts. It is about what love could be, what we could be with an open heart. Love inspires you to believe in the impossible. Love is worth growing, reaching, and fighting for.

Chuck and his high school sweetheart, Lisa, were married for 41 years. Their son, Jared, was born with cerebral palsy in May 1984. Chuck cared for Lisa throughout the year and a half before her death in March 2015. Until her illness and death, Lisa was Jared’s primary caregiver. Chuck assumed full-time care for Jared. Jared earned his undergraduate degree and a Master’s in Professional Counseling. He is a published author in the book, Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul 2: Stories About Facing Challenges, Realizing Dreams and Making a Difference Tonya met her first husband in college. Their 20-year marriage had many ups and downs. They had four children: Scott, Whitney, Courtney, and JonLuke.

After the divorce, Tonya’s focus was maintaining a stable home and raising her children. She earned a degree in Business Leadership. She was happiest in her professional life when she was helping others, serving as an Ombudsman Supervisor for the state of Oklahoma long-term care for nearly 20 years and

in hospice care for five years. Although she retired in 2022, Tonya is an independent contractor with SendaRide. She enjoys meeting people, being of service, and the purpose working provides.

Chuck and Tonya met six years ago while performing caregiver duties for their respective mothers who lived in the same community a few houses apart. After several months of conversations and becoming friends, Chuck asked Tonya to dinner. They quickly realized they brought unique personal life experiences into their relationship.

They acknowledged from the beginning that it is imperative, as a couple, to discuss your concerns, fears, and joys with each other.

In 2019 and only a few months into their courtship Tonya was diagnosed with heart disease and at 62 years old, required a double bypass. Chuck was by her side throughout the surgery and recovery.

As Tonya regained her strength, their friendship deepened and grew. They knew they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. Chuck asked Tonya to marry him, and after a short engagement, married in January 2020.

Chuck and Tonya believe their faith in God, their marriage based on a grounded friendship, love,

and the willingness to address issues makes the difference. Chuck realized that being a good husband for Lisa did not automatically make him a good husband for Tonya. It was a learning process.

Tonya is the first to admit and discuss the adjustments required in marriage. She says, “I am a different person now than I was before Chuck and I got married. I spent my entire life feeling I was not worthy of love. Now I know I am worthy and loved.”

Her biggest adjustments were learning to accept small kindnesses, believing in someone, and trusting.

She had to learn kindness is not judging. Tonya says, “Caring for another means a shift in your attitude.

You can’t be selfish.”

When asked, what is the greatest joy they have experienced in marriage, both said the intimacy that comes from sharing hugs, cuddling, talking for hours, and being connected. Finding and being the best version of yourself requires letting go of the past and embracing the future. As we mature, life experiences shape our thoughts and how we respond to others.

Loving someone is, or should be, selfless.

The couple is building a new home on an acreage in Harrah, Oklahoma. This home will allow them to age in place and enjoy life with their five adult children,

their spouses, and ten grandchildren.

Chuck and Tonya love having a large family.

Their days are filled with grandparenting activities and the fun a large family brings.

Their goal is to live a healthy, active life as young-at-heart seniors.

When asked, what is the best thing about being married to Chuck, Tonya replied, “He lets, and encourages me, to be me and we laugh a lot.”

When Chuck was asked what is the best thing about being married to Tonya, he responded, “She is my best friend. I like her and she allows me to love her.”

And, what about marriage as a senior?

Chuck says, “It’s worth it!”

Mature love and marriage, according to Tonya and Chuck Garrett is wonderful.

They encourage everyone to be open to new relationships, and new friends; because you never know when that new friend will become the love of your life.

ABLE Tech Reutilization Program

Is your garage, attic, or a room in your home warehousing durable medical equipment (DME) and assistive technology (AT) devices that are no longer in use? Now is the time to access Oklahoma ABLE Tech’s Device Reutilization Program.

This program is a unique service that provides free or low-cost AT and DME to Oklahomans who need them, regardless of their income or insurance status.

Did you know that there are over 600,000 Oklahomans with a disabling condition who may benefit from assistive technology (AT) devices and durable medical equipment (DME)? Many of them face barriers when accessing these devices, such as high costs, lack of insurance coverage, or limited availability.

The Device Reutilization Program is based on the principle of giving gently used AT and DME a second life. The program collects donations of gently used devices from individuals, organizations, or vendors, and then sanitizes, refurbishes, and repairs them as needed. The program then matches the devices to the best-suited Oklahomans based on their needs and preferences. The program has a wide range of devices available, such as wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, hospital beds, and more. Anyone who is in need of AT or DME can apply for the program, either online or by filling out a paper application.

The program gives priority to SoonerCare members but does not exclude anyone based on their income or insurance status.

The Device Reutilization Program has many benefits for both the donors and the recipients of the devices. For the donors, the program offers a convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of their unwanted or unused devices, and also gives them a tax deduction for their donation. For the recipients, the program provides them with access to AT and DME that can improve their independence, safety, and quality of life.

For example, Lana had a temporary need for a portable commode after she broke her leg. While using the wheelchair during her injury, she was unable to wheel herself into her in-accessible bathroom. By receiving this device, she was able to go to the bathroom independently. Lana says the loan of this item saved her money and made life a little more bearable while she was recovering.

tissue degeneration, and the upright walker allows her to ambulate confidently! “It is a rare opportunity when one of these walkers is donated into the program – so ABLE Tech will be cheering her along to reach her goals” – says Shelley Gladden, Assistant Director of ABLE Tech.

Shelley says: “We try to make it as easy as possible to connect with us to donate a piece of equipment. We have several partners across the state that serve as drop-off locations, but we can also come directly to you for a scheduled pick-up for those pieces of DME that are just too large or difficult for individuals to transport.”

Oklahoma ABLE Tech’s Device Reutilization Program is a valuable service that provides free DME to Oklahomans who need them. The program is 100% donation-based, and anyone can apply for a device, regardless of income or insurance status. The program improves the lives of people with disabilities, seniors, and veterans by giving them access to DME that can enhance their independence, safety, and quality of life. With 121 combat missions in Vietnam, Lt. Col. Robert “Bob” Kruse, Retired, lived his dream of being a pilot. Lt. Colonel Kruse entered the military in 1954. Bob served his country as an Air Force pilot for 21 years receiving numerous awards including a Distinguished Flying Cross.

Bob grew up dreaming of the day he would be in the skies, flying a plane. Little did he know he would travel at speeds we could not comprehend in the 1930s. Or, that the planes would be military fighter jets. Not everyone gets to live their dream.

After graduating high school in 1949, he earned a degree at San Jose State College, where he was in the Air Force ROTC. Upon graduation in 1954, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and immediately entered the Air Force in the pilot training program.

During his military career, he flew many types of fighter jets, including T33, F94C, F86D, F102, T38, and F100s. While serving nearly thirteen months in Vietnam and flying 121 combat missions his F100 fighter jet was hit by ground fire three times. Kruse knows how fortunate he is to have sustained no injuries or loss of aircraft. What does weigh heavily CAREGIVER Magazine 18 1 8 CAREGIVER Magazine

on his mind is the untold number of lives lost as a result of his precision flying. Even today, nearly 60 years after leaving Vietnam, he chokes up and his voice gets shaky as he tells his story.

While stationed in Europe in 1968, Kruse was Flight Commander of the 493Rd Tactical Fighter Squadron at British Royal Air Force Base, Lakenheath, England.

After departing Libya, on a change of station flight, the jet engine of the F100 he was flying exploded over the Mediterranean Sea. Pieces of the engine and smoke filled the cockpit. At over 31,000 feet, the F100 went from 93% power to zero in less than 2 seconds. After declaring an emergency, he headed for Malta. Kruse lost radio contact; spotted a landing strip and traveling at 190 knots he contacted the runway with approximately 4500 feet remaining.

Unable to stop with all drag devices and brakes, the aircraft passed over the overrun, partially shearing and collapsing the nose gear and allowing the airscoop to contact the ground approximately 300 feet after leaving the runway.

The aircraft continued, striking seven high-intensity light poles; a chain link fence; a stone and mortar fence;

slid across a paved road; into a second stone fence; struck an eighth light pole, and finally came to rest against a third stone fence. Kruse used the auxiliary release handle to jettison the canopy and exited the aircraft.

Assignments in Delaware, Japan, Vietnam, and Arizona all revolved around flying. From combat to peacekeeping, Kruse was Commander of pilot training, crew training, interception, air defense, and semi-automatic ground environment.

Bob retired from military service in 1975.

He worked for the Federal Aeronautical Administration for over 26 years training pilots in various capacities. He was a Lear Jet licensed pilot with more than 10,000 logged hours and 320 flights in a glider. Many of the most relevant memories of his life have been in the pilot seat in the cockpit of a plane. Bob continues to be an advocate for flying and keeping our military strong.

Kruse started building his first plane, a NE Smith Cougar, in 1958 while stationed in Japan. He built a second plane, Vans RV9a in 2002-07.

Although he still has a valid pilot’s license, Bob recently sold both planes. All of his flying now is as a passenger. He and his late wife, Penny, were married for more than 55 years and raised four children. Bob cared for Penny before her death.

Flying enthusiast, Bryan Rhodes, met Bob at a radio-controlled model planes trade show.

Bryan is building an F100 radio-controlled model plane with the same tail number that Bob flew during combat. He and Bob are excited about the completion and inaugural flight of the radiocontrolled F100 model and seeing that tail number in the skies once again.

pain caused many muscles to become weak. That meant I had to learn exercise for my jaw, neck, shoulders, hips, back, thighs, and feet. My physical therapist has taught me about an hour and a half of daily exercises to strengthen my muscles and decrease the pain. I found that if I am going to age successfully, I will need to adjust my life to make time for exercise. I had to give up being treasurer in a volunteer organization. I no longer take meals to new families at my church. I take extra time on the weekends to cook healthy meals. I prioritize which groups of people I want to hang out with. Selfcare gives me the emotional and physical energy to continue in my job, to help my husband with his health, and to have a greater enjoyment in life.

As I work with aging seniors and their family caregivers, I find that the greatest gift you can give your loved one is to be selfish and make sure you are taking care of yourself.

Mr. Green looked younger than 80 as he sat in his recliner chair, holding his wife’s frail hand. “My wife has been an amazing partner, and I want to be the one to give her the best care. Unfortunately, I have not been listening to my body, and pulling on her hurt my back. I hope you can send me some

A Selfish Love?

Wait—shouldn’t love be selfless? We are taught to think of others and put their needs first. Growing up, this is true because children tend to be selfish, and we have to train them to learn how to help and share with others.

Somehow, along the way, especially as a caregiver, selflessness can become neglecting self-care. This means that the care you want to provide your loved one will be less than it could be.

I walked into an independent living apartment to see Mrs. Jones helping her husband eat. “I want to hire your company to help me with my husband. I decided to sell the house and move here because I cannot take care of my husband and manage the house, the cooking, and the yard.” Having worked with family caregivers for over twelve years, Mrs. Jones demonstrated wisdom in ensuring she had the energy to be a caregiver.

I have struggled for over 30 years with chronic pain and fatigue. With some light exercise, medication, and counseling, I have figured out how to live my best life.

Recently, though, the pain had caused me to become frailer, and the headaches were hindering my enjoyment of life. My doctor recommended physical therapy. I thought in 6 to 8 weeks, I would be done. The chronic 22

caregivers to help out.” Mr. Green knew his back was bothering him, but he did not know how to stop long enough from being a caregiver to go to the doctor and resolve his back issues before they became debilitating.

About a month after getting help in the home, Mr. Green looked like a new person. “I’ve been going to coffee with guys three times a week. I am exercising and have had time to build some model airplanes. I should have taken better care of myself a long time ago.”

As you approach the season of love in February, think about what you can do to provide self-care for yourself.

Look over all your obligations and find the ones that drain you or do not bring much fulfillment, and if possible, let those obligations go.

First, make sure to take care of your basic physical needs. Are you eating a well-balanced diet, drinking enough water, and getting adequate sleep? Without these basic physical needs being met, you will not have the physical energy to be a caregiver. If your loved one is up at night, try to nap while your loved one is sleeping.

The last basic physical need is managing your health with your doctor. Most caregivers put off needed visits because they do not know how to fit in doctor visits.

Many practices will now come to the home, which may be a way to manage your health care.

Now think about how much you need to meet some social needs. There are community resources, family, or friends who, often, are happy to give you a short break so that you can have lunch with someone, go to church, or go to the senior center for some exercise.

Jane took care of her elderly husband for seven years, watching him slowly decline from dementia.

It was stressful, but Jane made sure someone sat with her husband every Wednesday morning so she could attend her lady’s Bible Study. This short time usually gave her the emotional energy to tackle the rest of the week.

What are activities you like to do for relaxation? I understand many older people watch television, but I would encourage you to find something different to do. Do you want to read, listen to music, or make something with your hands? If your loved one requires your constant attention, then schedule help so that you can have a mental break.

Most caregivers tell me that after they take a break and take care of themselves, they have the emotional and physical energy to dive back into the caregiving role.

VA CAREGIVER PROGRAMS Each year we receive many calls from veterans and their family caregivers looking for resources to provide better care options and outcomes for themselves or the veterans they care for. We hear in their voices the need to connect with others who understand their unique challenges. Below are two programs we’ve had incredibly positive feedback from families who’ve utilized these programs through the VA. PROGRAM OF GENERAL CAREGIVER SUPPORT SERVICES The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) understands that the caregiver community is vital to the recovery and care of many Veterans. The Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS) is one of two programs under the Caregiver Support Program. The VA Caregiver Support Program (CSP) offers clinical, educational, and wrap-around services to individuals who care for Veterans enrolled in VA health care.

General Caregivers within PGCSS are recognized as persons who provide personal care services to a Veteran enrolled in VA health care who: • Needs assistance with one or more activities of daily living.

• Needs supervision or protection based on symptoms or residuals of neurological impairment or other impairment or injury.

General Caregivers may have access to: — Training and support through in-person, online, and telehealth sessions.

— Skills training focused on caregiving for a Veteran’s unique needs.

Individual counseling related to the care of the Veteran.

Respite care is a resource that offers medically and ageappropriate short-term services to eligible Veterans and allows caregivers to take time for themselves. In contrast, the Veteran is cared for in a safe and caring environment.

Peer Support Mentoring.

To enroll: • Contact your local VA facility’s CSP team by using CSP’s locator tool.

• Speak to a member of your CSP team and provide basic information.

The Veteran receiving caregiver support services must be eligible for VA healthcare and consent to receive care from the identified caregiver. The enrolled caregiver will be identified in the Veteran’s healthcare record. To establish a healthcare record, a local VA facility CSP team member will request specific information. The facility CSP team and VA clinicians will use this healthcare record to provide services and support.

The Oklahoma City program offers in-person and virtual support groups monthly; one in Oklahoma City and one in Lawton, and, two virtual sessions each month. The support groups provide caregivers the opportunity to meet with other caregivers, reduce social isolation, and increase social connectedness. The support groups also give the caregivers the opportunity to get assistance with navigating VA Health Care and to learn about other services that are available.

New financial help for Oklahoma family caregivers

For Oklahoma’s caregivers, and the parents, spouses, and other loved ones they care for, help is finally on the way. The Caring for Caregivers Act will give eligible Oklahoma family caregivers a tax credit of up to $2,000 a year or up to $3,000 a year for care given to a veteran or someone with dementia.

The credit is for out-of-pocket costs that unpaid caregivers incur for a limited set of services. The costs must be directly related to providing care for an eligible family member.

The Caring for Caregivers Act passed during the 2023 legislative session and will take effect January 1, 2024. The tax credit is first eligible in the 2024 tax year.

RESOLVE TO PROTECT YOURSELF

2024 is well underway and I hope that with your New Year’s Resolutions, you considered and included resolutions to protect yourself. Here are a few things I encourage you to do in the coming weeks/months: Change all of your passwords and make sure you have a completely different password or preferably a pass-phrase for each and every account. You should change your passwords at least annually and probably twice annually.

Don’t forget your home internet password and your PIN numbers too – they need to be changed regularly as well.

Never give out any personal information to someone who initiated contact with you. Instead, YOU contact THEM through another means that you know to be correct, not through a means they provided to you.

Never give money to someone that your only interaction with them has been through phone or computer – you only know of them by what they want you to know and if they’re asking for personal information, it’s most likely a scam.

Keep all your device software updated and install good virus protection software on ALL your devices. This includes laptops, tablets, and even your cell phone after all it is a computer that allows you to make calls and should be treated as such.

Don’t click on links! Remember, unsubscribe and advertisements are links too.

Don’t answer your phone except for family or close friends even if it is a business you think you know – caller ID can easily be spoofed to read whatever the caller wants it to say.

Bella SPCA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Oklahoma City created in 2006 to assist low-income, elderly, or terminally ill pet owners with the cost of veterinary care when it cannot be afforded. Every year thousands of animals are euthanized, surrendered to local animal shelters, or pass away because the people who love them cannot financially absorb the cost of veterinary care. Stray and abandoned animals have even fewer options when brought into a clinic or veterinary office with no owner to pay for their care.

Bella SPCA believes every animal deserves the best possible veterinary care regardless of the owner’s ability to pay.

Since their beginning, Bella has provided more than $1.7 million dollars in funding to cover the cost of veterinary care for at-risk pet owners. When an animal is brought to their non-profit veterinary hospital for care, their only priority is making that pet well; never cost. Prices at the clinic are lower than most vet clinics in our city but Bella goes even further. The price someone pays is based on income, not procedure. If someone needs financial assistance to make their pet well, they provide it. Based on income, pet owners pay all, some, or none.

Why are so many senior citizens seemingly subject to scammers? Whether fair or not, seniors are perceived as easy targets due to several factors: 1. Financial Savings. Older adults are likely to have accumulated substantial savings, making them attractive targets.

2. Perceived Vulnerability. Scammers assume that seniors may be less tech-savvy or more trusting.

How does a seasoned citizen navigate around these scams? Here are some common sense suggestions: 1. Stay Sharp. Knowledge is like a good walking stick – it keeps you steady. Keep up with the common cons.

2. Guard Personal Information. Never share personal information like social security numbers or banking details over the phone or online, unless you are the person who initiated the contact with a trusted entity.

3. Check Twice. Always make sure the folks you’re dealing with, be it charities or businesses, are the real McCoy. 4. Don’t Be Rushed. Scammers try to make you feel a sense of urgency. Take your time and talk it over with a trusted friend or family member before making a decision.

5. Use Technology Wisely. Keep your software updated and consider using anti-virus programs. Be cautious about what you share on social media platforms like Facebook®. Don’t overshare.

3. Ask for Help. Notify law enforcement authorities, like the Oklahoma Attorney General, or a federal agency like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Your family and community are your backup band.

The role of family and community in ensuring the well-being of its senior members, especially in areas like finances and online safety, cannot be overstated.

Regular open communication within your family about these topics is crucial, as it helps you stay aware and prepared. Setting up monitoring systems and alerts for unusual activities in your banking account is another way to stay ahead of the thieves.

If you smell a rat, do the following: 1. Hold your Horses and Do Not Act Immediately.

If you suspect a scam, take a moment to pause and think.

If you have a Power of Attorney, make sure you have assigned a trusted individual to manage your financial affairs. Also, regularly review your bank statements and credit reports for any unusual activity.

Every February 14th, people around the world exchange gifts, chocolates, and romantic greetings for a day set aside for lovers. Many traditions are followed, all in the name of St. Valentine. Still, people may not understand why such customs are upheld. Much of the history of Valentine’s Day and St. Valentine himself is shrouded in mystery and much of what’s widely accepted is inaccurate.

To set the record straight, here are some facts about the holiday.

• Valentine’s Day is believed to have originated from a celebration in Rome during the fifth century. This celebration paid tribute to St. Valentine, a Catholic priest. Other historians surmise it was a way to “Christianize” the pagan holiday of Lupercalia, which was a fertility festival. Included in the traditions were boys and girls drawing names from a box and exchanging gifts.

• The Catholic Church acknowledges at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus.

• All of the stories surrounding St. Valentine—whether they are disputed or not—paint him as a sympathetic and heroic individual.

• The oldest known written valentine still in existence today was a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following his capture at the Battle of Agincourt.

• Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.

• Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are the most popular holidays to give flowers.

• According to Hallmark, women purchase 85% of all valentines.

• According to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year behind Christmas.

• Candy was among the earliest Valentine’s Day gifts and remains a popular gift today.

• In Medieval times, girls consumed unusual foods on Valentine’s Day in the belief it would make them dream of their future husbands.

• Valentine’s Day greetings have been popular from the Middle Ages onward, though they have been usually verbal in nature.

You Won’t Be Single for Long Vodka Cream Pasta ½ T olive oil, once around the pan in a slow stream ½ T butter 1 glove garlic, minced 1 shallot, minced ½ c. vodka ½ c. chicken stock 16 oz. crushed tomatoes Coarse salt and pepper 8 oz. pasta such as penne ¼ c. heavy cream 10 leaves fresh basil, shredded or torn Grated Parmesan cheese (optional) Heat a large skillet over moderate heat. Add the oil, butter, garlic, and shallots. Gently sauté shallots for 3 to 5 minutes. Add vodka to the pan. Let cook until reduced by half. Add chicken stock and tomatoes. Bring sauce to a bubble and reduce heat to simmer. Season with salt and pepper.

While the sauce simmers, cook the pasta in salted boiling water to al dente. Stir the cream into the sauce. When it returns to a bubble, remove from heat. Drain pasta. Toss the hot pasta with sauce and basil leaves. Top with a little freshly-grated Parmesan, if desired Rachael Ray from foodnetwork.com

Salted Caramel Strawberries 20 large fresh strawberries 40 caramels 3 T whipping cream ¼ t salt 1¼ coarsely-chopped mixed nuts Waxed paper Wash the strawberries and pat completely dry with paper towels. (The caramel will not stick to wet berries.) Microwave the caramels, whipping cream, and salt in a 1-quart bowl at MEDIUM (50%) power for 3½ minutes or until smooth, stirring at 1-minute intervals.

Dip each strawberry halfway into caramel mixture. Roll in nuts and place on lightly greased waxed paper. Let stand 15 minutes. Serve immediately or cover and chill up to 8 hours.

From in-home training for seniors with vision loss to equipment that helps those with hearing loss communicate, Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services helps seniors remain independent and selfsufficient in every county in the state.

Some say that DRS is a best-kept secret, but this state agency served 96.178 Oklahomans of all ages in 2023 through 25 employment, education, and independent living training programs as well as medical determination of Social Security disability benefits.

Email SDHH@okdrs.gov DRS’ Oklahoma School for the Deaf offers the Oklahoma Equipment Distribution Program to make communication more accessible to Oklahomans of all ages. This program supplies qualifying individuals with assistive devices such as doorbells that flash, closedcaptioned phones, augmentative communication devices known as pocket talkers, alerting devices and weather radios. Devices are shipped. It is not necessary to visit the school.

The Senior Citizens Hearing Aid Program is operated

by DRS Oklahoma School for the Deaf as part of the Equipment Distribution Program. To qualify for this program, seniors must be 60 years of age or older with limited income and a 35-decibel hearing loss in their better ear. The Masonic Charity Foundation of Oklahoma has made generous donations to support this program in recent years. The program pays for an audiology examination, ear mold impression, hearing aid fitting and one non-digital hearing aid at a time per person due to limited funding and the need to serve as many seniors as possible. VISION DISABILITIES DRS Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers all the programs in this section.

The Older Blind Independent Living Program provides in-home training to help people who are 55 years old or older and legally blind adjust to vision loss, make maximum use of remaining vision and regain or maintain maximum independence and self-sufficiency.

Rehabilitation of the Blind Teachers customize training for each person and can teach how to independently cook; handle household chores; use a computer, cell phone, and other technology; identify money; tell time; match clothing; and many other tasks. This program offers group classes called Visually Impaired and Blindness Empowerment, or VIBE, at locations around the state to evaluate and train participants in daily living skills, travel and transportation use, and technology. WINTER GARDENING

We can see that our shade grass gets water and that leaves are kept off of it. Generally, I think about where and what I will plant in spring. It is too cold to work much outside. How about trying something new?

For me starting vegetable transplants from seed would be new. I have gathered fact sheets from the Extension Center. I have talked with gardeners who have experience in starting seeds indoors. I am ready to give this a try. I will start germinating seeds a few weeks before plant time. Plant time for the seeds I have selected is when all danger of frost is past and the night time temperature is 55-60 degrees. A general target date in Oklahoma is April 15th. I will begin the germination process for tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers in the middle of February. February or

March would be the best time to start vegetable transplants inside. I do not have a greenhouse, so I will provide the light and heat needed in my home. I considered starting the plants in my garage but decided it might be too cold to germinate the plants. So I have found a place in our home to set up a starting place. I have purchased a grow lamp and a heat mat for this purpose.

My plan is to germinate the plants inside and allow some growth before transplanting to my prepared beds. One of the most common errors made by transplant growers is to start plants too early in the season. The Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service recommends that transplants not have fruits, flowers, or flower buds before transplanting. I have purchased seed starting mix and peat containers. Using peat containers to start seeds has advantages. You can transplant without removing from the container. The pot will degrade in the soil and add a small amount of organic matter to the planting hole.

a reputable nursery or garden center. There are many varieties to choose from. For this year I have selected Better Boy, Cherokee Purple, and Black Krim tomatoes. These tomatoes are all indeterminate which means they will vine and continue producing fruit until frost. Determinate tomatoes bush and produce fruit for a limited season. Either choice would be good. Most commercial growers choose determinate so that harvest can be done in a concise time.

Indeterminate varieties produce fruit from summer to fall. It is important to provide support for the vines. They can grow to over 6 feet in length. They are to be planted after the last frost and the soil temperature is at least 60 degrees.

Summer squash is my favorite. The tomatoes are 70 days until harvest. Summer squash is 41 till harvest. I have selected a garden sweet hybrid cucumber. It says 60-70 days until harvest. For easy picking of cucumbers, it is recommended that the vines be tied to a vertical support. The vegetation on my prepared bed is called a cover crop. I planted Austrian Winter Peas. Two weeks before planting vegetables, I will spade them under to supply additional nitrogen to the soil. It is important to follow directions on the package as far as where to plant, how deep, and how much room the plants need.

DEBBIE VANHOOSER Morada Senior Living-Dorset Place Debbie Vanhooser was born and raised in Alva, Oklahoma. She has two sons and a total of six grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. She is continuing the traditions of the Vanhooser kitchen with her granddaughters.

Debbie grew up working in the family lumber yard and family farm. She would cook to feed the farm hands that were working to harvest the wheat. Ms Debbie has always felt happiest when she is serving and caring for others.

The cook was a friend of hers and asked her to help cook. Debbie reluctantly applied and fell in love with the place, Ms Debbie has an old soul and feels at home with our older generation. Ms Debbie was raised in the kitchen, and she puts her heart and soul into everything she prepares.

The residents are her favorite thing about her job. Ms. Debbie enjoys most being with the residents during mealtimes.
