Dear Readers,

I hope each of you are doing well and looking forward to all the joys of summer. May each of you enjoy plenty of time spent outdoors sharing memories and laughter with friends and family. I’ve noticed a resurgence of family reunions that had sadly fallen out of fashion. Celebrating family and the traditions that make each of our families unique is a wonderful show of Americana.

One of my family’s favorite holidays is the 4th of July. It is a day that wraps all the best of family and America into one great day. Fun, family, friends, food and fireworks life doesn’t get much better than that.

The fourth of July always reminds me of my Daddy and how I choose to celebrate the day now as an adult with my family is very different from how we celebrated when I was a child.

I didn’t understand in my younger years why we celebrated the day as we did but as I got older I began to understand the toll war took on my father. Celebrating at home with my grandparents and grilling out was about the extent Dad could tolerate. The adults sat in lawn chairs outside talking and laughing while us kids ran around being goofy kids. It was a big deal loading up in the truck and heading to the fireworks stand with each of us getting our box of sparklers.

As I approached my teen years the big city closest to our small town began having a grand 4th of July celebration with bands and a big fireworks display. I assembled my best talking points, mustered up the courage at the supper table when I saw my chance, and presented my case. It was a flat no but the look my mother shot me across the table I knew would make doing dishes next to her that evening interesting.

She told me, “Daddy can’t do that.” Then she brought up Mr. Beeker my teacher from that school year, he served in Korea. At first, I wasn’t understanding where she was going with her story but then it clicked for me. You’ll need in on the back story for that to make any sense.

Some of the boys in my class had discovered if they slammed their math books on their desks Mr. Meeker would drop to the ground and cover his head. They laughed and thought it was funny. After recess, we had a very different history lesson that day as the principal entered the room laid his paddle on my teacher’s desk, and leaned against it. Mr. Beeker went to the world map and pointed out Korea and shared his war story at a 5th-grade level. The Principal left the room and that never happened again. I realized what Momma was telling me then and why we celebrated the 4th of July as we did.

It wasn’t until I was 17 and drove myself and a group of friends to that big celebration did I really understand. My Dad was a heavy weapons platoon leader 1st Infantry, Big Red One Division in Vietnam at the end of the Tet offensive. The sounds of the fireworks leaving the tubes, the smell, and the illumination in the night sky, it was somber to think what all he’d been through. I didn’t enjoy it near as much as I had anticipated because as I stood there in that massive group of people I just kept thinking of all the soldiers like my Daddy. I respected and loved him in a different way after that evening.

Our history is so important. It helps us understand one another better, it helps us to understand our traditions and holidays. I encourage grandparents and great-grandparents to share your family stories this summer with the younger generations and pass on the memories your family shared with you. Put those cell phones to good use taking family videos and lots of pictures.

May the Lord bless your family with cherished memories and good health this summer and the sunburns be mild and the mosquitoes be few.

At the age of 16, Joel “Jick” Holloway was told by his father it was time for Jick to leave home.

Jick had graduated from Davis High School in May 1958, and could “make it on his own”. On his 17th birthday, Jick joined the Army and left for basic training from Oklahoma City. That is when Jick determined he would work hard, learn much and own his own home so that no one could ever dictate to him, “It is time for you to leave.”

Training in the Army included Combat Medic and Medical Specialist, which bought him a ticket to Korea along the DMZ in 1958 and then to Tripler Army Hospital in 1959. Receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1961, Jick returned to Oklahoma to attend Pharmacy School and then Medical School at the University of Oklahoma. Following a Residency in Dermatology at the University

of Arkansas in Little Rock, Jick returned to Norman in 1974 where he treated patients with cancers and diseases of the skin for more than 50 years.

Meanwhile, Twyla Smith left her hometown of Bartlesville, Oklahoma in 1973 and moved to Norman to attend Pharmacy School, Medical School, and Residency in Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma. Twyla has seen patients as a general adult Psychiatrist in Oklahoma City and Norman for over 30 years. Jick and Twyla met in June 1976, dated for 18 years, fell in love, and decided to marry and build their forever home in Norman where they live today.

After 2 years of meeting weekly with their architect they decided it was time to build. They bought 4 acres in Cinnamon Run, married on the land that would become their homesite and began construction. The house was built on an area of natural clearing but much of the land was densely covered with underbrush, greenbriar, and a variety of cross-timber trees.

Construction of the house took almost 2 years, with the usual

“doses of daily disappointment” that often come with construction projects.

Carefully clearing and caring of the land continues today, as does the cultivating of the vegetable and flower garden. Without a doubt, marrying on their land and moving into their forever home together were two of the happiest days in Jick and Twyla’s lives. Jick designed and oversaw construction of a guest house, “The Nest”, in 2017. This space has added an additional dimension to the peaceful sanctuary of “The Holloway Home.”

The natural sanctuary of their home has inspired Jick to write and publish several books pertaining to nature, including Dictionary of Birds of the United States: Scientific and Common Names which includes many never published pen and ink drawings

by George Miksch Sutton, Fauna and Flora of Oklahoma, A Dictionary of Common Wildflowers of Texas and the Southern Great Plains, and A Book of Unrelated Facts, Things I Happen to Know.

Their lives abruptly changed on October 12, 2020. Jick had seen patients at the office, changed clothes to go to the gym, made a left-hand turn on a green arrow, and was T-Boned at highway speed by a distracted driver in a near-fatal accident. Life-saving interventions were taken immediately upon his arrival at the OU Level I Trauma Center. At the age of 79, Jick had sustained multiple fractures to his pelvis and left leg, requiring numerous surgeries. Miraculously, Jick lived but is still confined to a wheelchair, despite ongoing intensive Physical Therapy.

Twyla recalls her prayers for Jick to just live long enough for her to get him home to the healing sanctuary of their home.

“If he can get home, I know he and I can make it through this together.” Modern medicine, love, the prayers of people around the world, and a miracle helped make that happen.

Though the recovery has been slow and painful, the day Jick was released to return home was again, one of the happiest days in Jick and Twyla’s lives. The caregiving they had given throughout their lives went to the next level. Now they would begin a new phase of caregiving for each other and are still learning. Part of the strength Jick and Twyla have drawn upon is their training in Judo.

Jick began training in Judo while in the Army. He became the head instructor at the Sooner Judo Club upon his return to Norman, eventually becoming World Grand Champion in Judo Kata, along with his kata partner, Ralph Sexton. He was then promoted to 8th-degree black belt. Twyla studied Judo with Jick as her Sensei, becoming the first female to be promoted to 1st-degree black belt in the Sooner Judo Club. The physical and inner strength they share through their training in Judo has given them the extra determination to keep going together through some very difficult days since Jick’s return home.

That same inner strength and determination, along with their love for each other and their home, is once again being called upon to help fight the battle to save their forever home from the devastation of the construction of the proposed turnpike through their neighborhood of Cinnamon Run by the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.

From the Editor: At this time your home and community may not be directly in the path of this proposed turnpike expansion. However, many of you understand all too well what this family is going through because you have been there yourself. Over 600 of our fellow Oklahoman’s homes are destined to be leveled to the ground if this project continues but there are other turnpikes planned.

It’s estimated on current data that over 600,000 homes will be destroyed across the state before the proposed turnpike map projects are completed.

We were told that turnpikes are needed to alleviate congestion. We were also told the last extension of the turnpike would transport over 12,000 drivers a day but that never happened with only around 2,100 drivers utilizing it daily according to the state’s own data. Here’s the real clincher. Oklahomans were told in 1965 by then-Governor Henry Bellmon, “We propose to make it possible for the drivers of Oklahoma to have these better roads and pay as we go. These bonds we’re talking about are all self-liquidating bonds. They don’t cost the general fund a penny.” The toll roads of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority would be “pay as you go roads” turned back to the state and managed by ODOT and become public roads once the bonds were paid off and there’s the catch it seems. By continually building new turnpikes the bonds will never be paid off. It’s a business scheme the huckster Bernie Madoff couldn’t have concocted out any better.

We pay to travel on the toll roads, we are taxed for the roads and we are taxed again at the pump. We pay for the effects of what this does to communities, families, and our natural flora and fauna. There are serious and legitimate watershed concerns surrounding this turnpike expansion. Lake Thunderbird supplies drinking water to the residents of the area with the proposed toll path running adjacent to the shoreline. No impact studies have been completed to make sure the water supply will not be tainted due to runoff and other environmental construction factors. Lake Thunderbird is also one of the migratory nesting sites for the American Bald Eagle and no studies have been completed on how the current eagle population will be affected. Our Oklahoma state rock,

the Rose Rock, is a stunning natural wonder. The only known place on earth this extremely rare geological beauty has been found is in the location where the OTA is planning to pave over with this turnpike.

In 1998 this OTA expansion was set to begin construction the then citizens of Norman and the surrounding communities came together to stop what at the time was called “Norman 2020 Land Use and Transportation Plan”. Now it appears they only postponed the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority and the planned expansion. Some of the original citizens along with the addition of a fresh group of homeowners, farmers, and businesses are standing together once again to stop the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.

They are not against infrastructure and understand fully that almost 4 million Oklahomans need roads to travel but what is being proposed is the same route that would not relieve congestion then any more than it will now. They are simply wanting all the impact and viability studies completed first before the construction process begins. These families don’t want their homes destroyed for another toll road that is not justified. All Oklahomans deserve transparency.

In sports, the players get ready all week for the big game. Coaches’ jobs are to get the athlete ready to compete. I live near the University of Oklahoma and whenever I drive by, I see athletes pushing themselves with leg lifts, wind sprints, and burpees to get ready for game day.

They do this because the goal is to win. Besides the coaches and players, there is one more important individual—the referee. The referee makes sure the rules are followed so everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed.

Sometimes with the emotions within family dynamics, we could use a coach or a referee to help us navigate some of the difficulties that are encountered as a caregiver. When my mother was alive every family gathering must follow one rule—arrive at her house on time. Unless you were in the emergency you had better not show up late. One late person would ruin the atmosphere as mom sits there in stony silence.

We all have these hot-button issues inside ourselves that can make conflict inevitable.

Janie called me one day to get some help with her father. I saw conflict streaming throughout that house as I was trying to assist this family.

Everything was calm while I talked about our services. As soon as I mentioned our prices Janie’s father began yelling at his whole family.

The daughter started to cry and then everyone began to placate the father trying to get him to calm down. I imagined this scene has played out frequently in that family and Janie did not know how to get beyond this behavior.

When family members have to make important decisions about aging loved ones it might be time to hire a coach or a mediator. If only one person in the family wants to deal with unhealthy family dynamics as the stress of caregiving is affecting their mental, social or physical health—this is a good time to look into a conflict coach who will train them how to avoid hot button phrases. The coach will role play with that individual to help them learn how to handle conflict to keep it from escalating.

If all the family have unresolved conflict that is affecting their relationships, they can as a group hire a conflict coach or an elder mediator to help the family come up with a compromise that everyone is satisfied with. This is important in that it helps the family maintain relationships through all the hardships they may go through.

Sometimes the stress of caregiving and aging family members can create stress in our relationships. It is better to try and prevent escalation if possible. It is important to write down concerns, listen to each person, and put things in writing. It is a good idea to not promise something that a person cannot fulfill.

Sometimes family members will ask that they never be placed in a facility. No one can or should make that promise because sometimes people’s health conditions will change. We can make a promise that an individual will be provided the best care available.

Also, older people have the right to make their

own decisions. It is hard sometimes because we may not like the decisions they make.

If they have not been declared mentally incompetent, it is important to recognize their rights. If there are concerns about mental decline, then it is time to make an appointment with their primary care physician to talk about tests to determine if a person is competent to make their own decisions. My mother fell quite often, and once got scratched up by some rose bushes.

I was not going to be able to make her use a walker. It can be hard to watch them and worry about their safety.

We are not meant to go through life alone.

Resources are available to help us as we navigate the difficult terrain of caregiving.

Coaches and mediators can be a resource to help us deal with difficult situations and come out where everyone involved feels they got a win.

Groovy Things to do This Summer

Oh my, oh my, inflation, high gas prices, food prices rising all the time, interest rates soaring, and the stock market on a roller coaster ride, what are we seniors on fixed incomes to do? Senior citizens, just like any age, still want to have fun, but what will fit in our budget this summer?

Grab your lawn chair, sometimes a blanket on the ground is not comfortable, your favorite beverage, and head out to explore this summer.

Thank goodness for free events in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas that are groovy! Check out our groovy list for a few suggestions of senior-friendly free happenings.

Arcadia Farmer’s Market: Located 5 miles East of Edmond, OK, on Rte. 66 Visit the Arcadia Farmer’s Market for a fun family outing this summer.

The First Southern Baptist Church of Arcadia provides free balloons for the kids and water for your pet. A free petting zoo lets you get up close and personal with the animals. You support local vendors if you choose to purchase something, but no purchases are necessary. All the products at this market are local Oklahoma items. New items are available each week. Another priceless moment you can’t buy with money may happen at the swing set. Kids put down their phones and iPad and fly high on the swings while squealing, “Higher, higher, grandpa.”

Heard on Hurd: Downtown Edmond S. Broadway between 1st and Hurd This event is on the 3rd Saturday of each month from March to October.

The event goes from six to ten p.m.

Besides being free, it is family and dog-friendly, entertainment by musicians, and a monthly non-profit is featured.

This summer, strut your American pride by attending the patriotic tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces. Freedom Fest is Yukon’s two-day celebration on July 3 and July 4. Admission is free. You can enjoy free live outdoor concerts and a whopping big firework show both nights that start at 10 pm. Wear your red, white, and blue, and show that it is groovy to be a proud American.

McLoud Blackberry Festival: Veterans Memorial Park: 600 E. Park Street: McLoud The McLoud Blackberry Festival is the longestrunning food-related festival in Oklahoma. The town received national media coverage in 1949 when the Blackberry Growers Association and the McLoud Chamber of Commerce sent a crate of berries via overnight air freight to President Harry Truman. He said they were the best he had ever tasted and then declared McLoud the “Blackberry Capital of the World.”

The 2022 Festival will happen Friday, July 8, and Saturday, July 9. Admission is free. You may want to spend a little money and treat yourself to something blackberry scrumptious. For your ultimate groovy blackberry experience, check out this festival.

This movie is about second chances. It shows we are never too old to go after what we want. Even if we lose the zest for life for a moment in time, this movie shows how we can draw on the strength of our friends.

The antics to escape the long-term care VA facility are hilarious. The main character wanted to see the woman he should have married fifty years prior but didn’t. He and his friends plotted and planned, failed, and finally succeeded.

The line in the movie, “At the heart of all great loves is a great friendship,” spoke to me about the meaning of love.

This movie teaches us that sometimes it takes a long time for a happy ending. The thing about happy endings is they don’t just happen. You make them happen. We all deserve happy endings.

SERVICE BEFORE SELF

There are people in this world that you know, without a shadow of a doubt, who truly have a “Servant’s Heart”.

Most of us can count them on one hand. They are the ones who put others first, who believe in service before self, who see their way as the rule not the exception to the rule.

These same people believe your word is your bond and that your handshake is a binding contract.

Meet Joel Kintsel, a man who has served others his entire life. Joel learned his ethics and servant’s heart attitude by observing his family. He spent the first few years of his life in Quito, Ecuador, where his parents served as missionaries.

At the age of two, his family moved to Oilton, Oklahoma, where he spent most of his childhood. His parents are still missionaries. Growing up in mission work gives a different perspective on why we are on this earth and the importance of service.

Joel holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Oklahoma State University and a Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association. Joel served as the Parliamentarian for the Oklahoma House of Representatives for 14 years and is the author of the House Rules and Procedural Manual, a book detailing legislative parliamentary procedure in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.

A veteran of the Oklahoma Army National Guard, 45th IBCT, from 2001 to 2009, Joel served as Deputy Command Judge Advocate for the Joint Area Support Group – Central, Baghdad, Iraq, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2008. Joel was also one of the thousands of Oklahoma Guard members deployed to New Orleans, La., in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. In 2014, Joel took a second appointment

His grandparents were very influential in his life.

Both sets of grandparents were very active in making their communities better places to live. His maternal grandparents were both public school teachers. His paternal grandparents lived a 10-minute drive away in Drumright, Oklahoma. They were also very active in their community and church. Joel has many fond memories of his grandparents. He recognizes the investment of their time, love, kindness, life experiences, and wisdom in his formative years shaped him into the man he is today. Both of Joel’s grandfathers were in World War II. He learned from them what it means to make a commitment to serve 26

as an officer in the Oklahoma Air National Guard and is currently a Lt. Colonel and the Staff Judge Advocate of the 137th Special Operations Wing in Oklahoma City.

Starting in 2020 after the declaration of the pandemic, Joel was called up to serve as the Oklahoma National Guard’s supporting Judge Advocate for the statewide COVID-19 joint task force.

Joel previously served as ODVA Deputy Director from 2018 to 2019 before being appointed Executive Director. As ODVA Executive Director, Joel is responsible for providing leadership, strategic planning, organizing and directing all agency programs and daily operations, advising and updating the Oklahoma Veterans Commission on agency activities, executing special projects, and providing oversight of the seven Oklahoma Veterans Centers. The Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs oversees the care of veterans in its seven senior living communities across Oklahoma having over 1400 beds collectively giving ODVA the distinction of being the largest senior

care housing and healthcare provider in the state.

When Kintsel became the executive director of the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs (ODVA), he had very clear goals he wanted to accomplish. Kintsel believes effective customer service; service that put the veterans and their needs first is primary; and, second, it seems almost the same as number one, embracing the veteran and the veteran’s family as one. As Kintsel explained, “Caring for a veteran isn’t about one person. Most veterans serve for love of country and family. You cannot separate the two – it is a package deal.”

Clearly, Joel Kintsel is a man who envisions a brighter future for Oklahomans. In a state that consistently ranks at the bottom in education and the top in incarceration rates nationally.

At the heart of Kintsel’s desire to be the next Governor of Oklahoma is his love for Oklahoma and all Oklahomans. His platform is comprised of five key initiatives: identifying and eradicating corruption in our state government; resisting unconstitutional federal mandates; the border crisis; upholding the law; and, education focused on our children. Joel advocates for educators and parents to have a strong voice in the system; a viable, working system. Our children’s education should not be politicized.

Joel met his wife, Nancy, in 2000 at Spaghetti Warehouse in Tulsa. Joel says it was “almost” love at first sight! Nancy also grew up in a missionary family with service before self at the core of their beliefs. Nancy earned her undergraduate degree from John Brown University in Siloam Springs, AR; and her Master’s from Oklahoma City University.

As a former public school teacher who currently teaches English as a Second Language at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC), Nancy Kintsel joins Joel in advocating for education that is locally controlled and tailored to the needs of the individual student.

When asked what the catalyst was for deciding to run for Oklahoma Governor; Kintsel stated, “It was the U.S. Supreme Court’s McGirt decision and the subsequent disrespect, abuse, and bullying heaped on our Native family members by Governor Stitt. I am not from a Native background, but Oklahoma is my home.

Oklahomans are my family. We are all in this together. As Oklahomans, we can work out these challenges together.”

Many times Oklahomans are described as friendly, helpful, giving, and neighborly. Joel and Nancy Kintsel are shining examples of what being an “Okie” truly means. They have two children, Gavin and Reagan, whom they are raising as proud Oklahomans.

Joel Kintsel is ready to unite and lead our great state serving the Oklahoma people. The political arena is not easy, kind, or loving. It is the exact opposite of loving towards someone who is going against the grain by not being the typical preselected politician of special interests groups wanting to ensure their interests remain the priority in the state.

Joel Kintsel believes his personal motto of service before self has directed his journey through life. Alongside his strong faith in God will guide him to gaining the trust and support of Oklahomans. He will continue serving the people putting their needs and priorities first just like he always has in life. He is very proud to have thrown his hat in the political ring to be our next Governor and is ready to throw a wrench in the cog of the corruption machine that’s been running overtime in Oklahoma for too long.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME This is the first in a series on affordable housing in Oklahoma, more specifically, in the Oklahoma City metroplex. Although there is a dire shortage of truly affordable housing, knowing how to find housing, what programs are available, and where to access the information can expedite the process. Each expert will share their insights with us about what they witness on a daily basis of the needs and the consequences of not having viable housing available.

It can be difficult to find safe, well-maintained affordable housing. As I researched for this series I called ads for rental properties, too many times the first statement from the landlord after I shared my interest in the rental, was.

“I don’t take Section 8.” If reputable landlords “don’t take Section 8” that leaves properties that are often not wellmanaged, don’t screen renters, who are not vigilant in maintaining safe and clean environments.

There are so many Oklahomans of all ages living out of cars or going from relative-to-relative or friend-to-friend rather than live in squalor or fear. Who can blame them?

According to a local school mental health professional, the number of K-12 school children that are homeless in every county in Oklahoma is shocking with dramatically increased numbers in the major metropolitan areas of the state. “They come to school exhausted from sleeping in a vehicle or couch surfing, hungry, unable to regularly bath and maintain basic hygiene. It is taking a toll on their mental and physical health.” Oklahoma is at a crisis point on affordable safe housing.

It is difficult to find decent housing; nearly impossible to find decent housing that is affordable. If you are trying to live on less than $1000 a month; how do you put down application fees, deposits, and first months’ rent, without a program (or individual) subsidizing your living expenses?

There are some hard truths in our growing homeless population. The annual point-in-time count contradicts many preconceived ideas of whom, why, and how someone becomes homeless.

Be prepared to be surprised and humbled at what you read in this series.

After a recent presentation, a gentleman asked for a ride. During that 10-minute ride, I found out several things that he had never shared with me in our previous conversations. Three years ago his adult son was murdered; his wife left after cleaning out all financial resources; subsequently, his drinking led to losing his job; he lost his home and two rental properties. In his darkest hours, a friend reached out a hand up, helped him get sober, get a place to live, and learn how to move forward again. His goal now is to continue working, stay sober, repair his credit and acquire rental properties so others going through difficult life circumstances have more, viable options. He said, “Being homeless is demoralizing and humiliating. It is literally, incapacitating.”

The Social Trap While I am sure many parents, grandparents, and guardians already have safeguards in place for their children and grandchildren posting on social media, the following information may make you leery of ever allowing children in your care on social media in the first place.

By breaking down some of the most dangerous apps children and teens are using and how you can keep them safe whether that means putting simple boundaries in place or forbidding the use of certain apps entirely.

Among some of the most dangerous things, children are doing online Tik-Tok challenges such as The Blackout Challenge in which participants hold their breath or asphyxiate themselves with household items to the point of passing out from a lack of oxygen which can cause seizures, brain damage and death. This horrific viral challenge has taken the lives of multiple children.

Before you think “NOT MY CHILD OR GRANDCHILD,” keep in mind the lure of internet fame encouraging children to do things they usually wouldn’t.

These viral videos can receive thousands of views or more. Having conversations with children about the dangers of participating in such acts is extremely important. From the more benign trends like the ice bucket challenge to the more extreme and dangerous trends like the tide pod challenge from my generation.

That led to the rightful judging of our intelligence by our elders, the Internet isn’t new to these useless and dangerous challenges.

When researching Tik-Tok I came across a setting that at first, I was excited about called restricted mode.

Restricted mode is advertised to limit content that may be inappropriate for some viewers. I wanted to test this feature myself, so I made a Tik-Tok account

and turned on restricted mode. The very first video that came up was someone utilizing an Elmo hand puppet who could perfectly imitate the voice of Elmo from Sesame Street. Elmo’s voice precedes to say to the viewer “The person who sent you this wants to know where the f%&# you want to eat” and as if Elmo throwing out expletives wasn’t bad enough the content got progressively worse from there, with one TikToker asking his friends if they would sleep with their cousins for $2 million.

Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of parents and guardians would not deem this subject matter appropriate but may be unaware content like this is available for them to view. No one cares more about the preservation of your child’s innocence than you, especially not social media companies.

This is why I suggest not allowing younger children to use devices without supervision. Have children turn in their phones before bedtime to avoid unsupervised internet access and sleep deprivation.

Even though the minimum age requirement for a social media user is 13, we all know a lot of parents are allowing their children on social media at a much younger age, or the child may have installed the app without permission.

Be aware of all the apps children use and their online presence. Even if that means going through their phone, children may feel as though their privacy is being invaded. But the truth is the Internet isn’t private. If they don’t feel comfortable with you seeing what they post, they shouldn’t feel comfortable with a stranger or future employer seeing their posts either. Have open discussions about the dangers of posting personal information online.

Make sure you know who the child’s online friends are and if they know them in real life, if they don’t, ask why they friended them. Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter are some other dangerous apps children are using today. Instagram and Snapchat both have disappearing messages that make it easier for child predators and scammers to communicate with children. A simple web search can show you how to turn this feature off. You can also turn off the feature that allows strangers to send a “message request” on Instagram.

Twitter is a whole other beast you don’t have to have a Twitter account to use Twitter. Twitter has a search engine much like Google, and children and teens are using it to find pornography. Don’t let a lack of technological savviness put children in your care at risk.

If you don’t know how to change an app setting, Google it. If you are still having trouble ask a friend or family member for help. By working together, we can keep children safe online.

Set screen time limits, according to Commonsense Media, “between 2019 and 2021, the total amount of screen time used each day went from 4 hours and 44 minutes to 5 hours and 33 minutes among tweens, and from 7 hours and 22 minutes to 8 hours and 39 minutes among teens. This is a much faster increase in just two years than was seen in the previous four years.”

Children won’t remember the hours wasted scrolling through the endless web of nothingness that is social media. It’s truly a waste of time and time is precious.

Encourage them to have hobbies outside of social media. There are so many life-enriching alternatives.

Make memories that will stick with them forever and help them to be well-rounded individuals.

In the 80s Oklahoma earned the horrific distinction of having the worst corruption scandal by government officials in American history. 220 county commissioners were arrested in 60 of our 77 counties.

It is the biggest kickback scheme in U.S. history. The corrupt deals on gravel and bogus purchases of timber were ordered for state construction projects but never delivered. (Sounds a lot like that $5.4 million in PPE we never received during the pandemic. Really, we shouldn’t be too surprised that the governor selected Gino DeMarco, former deputy tourism director, the same man that orchastraated the $17 million “Bar-B-Q deal” at the state parks. He was also in charge of PPE supply chain purchasing.)

Okie Dokie, I’ve ranted long enough. Now I present to you the timeless words of Oklahoma’s Favorite Son”, Mr. Will Rogers: “I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.”

“All I know is just what I read in the papers, and that’s an alibi for my ignorance.”

Will Rogers helped America get through the Great Depression. He helped Oklahoma be remembered at the time for something other than the dust bowl. His folksy, down-to-earth, satirical style of humor and communication made him an American legend. He will forever be relevant in hard economic times - like we find ourselves in today.

Will Rogers was an inspiring man. He made being the most famous man of his day look easy. He was charitable and humble. He grew up on a cattle ranch near Oologah, Oklahoma. Where he learned how to ride a horse and throw a rope, and eventually he became one of the most famous lariat artists to ever perform. He was a worldwide sensation. He added comedy to his shows by joking about world politics, government leaders, and even presidents, he related to and was admired by common folks and dignitaries alike and that is a talent apart from his roping and riding skills few people past or present possess.

Will Rogers was always ready to step up and help Americans laugh through the difficulties of hard times and could poke fun at politicians probably better than anyone dead or alive today.

Oklahoma is a great state, there’s no place I’d rather be. That’s because of the natural beauty of the state and the Oklahoma people, not our shady politicians and their “good ole boy” buddies who seem to enjoy making our state look foolish to the rest of America.

There is plenty to shake our heads at with the current administration. The state is engulfed in corruption allegations up to our wallets at every turn and y’all please don’t think I’m picking on the governor personally for his fascination with alternative energy in a top oil-producing state or his extremely expensive taste in Bar-B-Q, and its not because he calls himself a republican. We had a democrat governor serve time in a federal penitentiary for his corruption while in office in the 70s.

Oklahoma politicians and corruption go together like biscuits and gravy, it would sure be nice if the gluttons would push themselves away from the taxpayer’s trough and stop the boondoggling.

Corruption in government is dispersed amongst both parties. The truth is folks like that don’t have loyalty to anything but cash.

Celebrate that, don’t ridicule it. We must stop falling for the lie that we hate each other and have nothing in common.

We are Americans and that is enough. We must hold our public officials accountable through civil means and remind them they work for us not the other way around. I hope everyone remembers to go vote on June 28th and make sure you know where you’re voting because of the recent U.S. census your voting precinct may have changed.

When I was a boy, Spring at our house was when we could start opening the windows again and let in some fresh air. The chickweed, dandelions, and clover would come out and would endure until the hot weather of Summer would come. I thought, and still think, that these are pretty plants that have their rightful place. Did you know that was the general opinion until after WWII? Would you like to know why?

Many manufacturers of chemicals were employed by both the Allies and the Axis powers. The Axis (mostly Nazi Germany) used them for manufacturing chemicals used in warfare, notably cyanide. Bayer was one of the chemical suppliers for Germany. Yes, that Bayer, who makes aspirin today. Their goods were no longer in the same demand after WWII was over, so they had to find other markets.

This is when some of the chemical manufacturers discovered that they could “beautify” the world by supplying fertilizers and weed killers. They could also provide relief from bugs by making insecticides.

So began the marketing based on these weeds being portrayed as “bad”. Model lawns would be free of those awful weeds. They would be deep, lush green.

And without all those terrible bugs.

So now we spend a fortune killing “weeds” and “pests” while we invest significantly in fertilizers to green up our lawns and make our flowers and vegetable prize-winners. Many a neighborhood has undeclared competitions between neighbors to see who can have the prettiest lawn. Even though it often means mowing the lawn twice as often, it is pursued with great enthusiasm.

I would like it if we could just turn the clock back a bit, reconsider the natural place of these “nuisances”, and enjoy their beauty instead of trying to make them extinct. But maybe that’s just me.

Kids and their education should not be politicized, and education should not be used as an enrichment scheme. As Governor, I’ll work to organize a blue ribbon panel of experts and parents to work together on the right way forward for our children’s future.
