Letter from T H E P U B L I S H E R Hello dear readers,

W

elcome to the Sweetheart Issue. Can we start with praise for the exceptional Florida skies we’re having?

Awe*some: Breathtaking, awe-inspiring, marvelous, magnificent, wonderful, amazing, stunning, overwhelming, wondrous. They humble me and fill me with true joy. I love, love, love them! I have been taking advantage of our winter weather by walking as much as I can. Walking was one of my New Year’s intentions. I ditched that word “resolution” after reading an article sug-

gesting that if we falter on our resolutions, we set ourselves up for failure. The author talked about little things we can do to trigger a Mind Shift, bringing awareness to the progress we can make in our lives. A wise

person taught me that I could always start my day- or yearover (start at the present moment), what a relief !

As much as we’d all like to sail smoothly through life, most of us will have trials and feel like life is just not fair. You may ask, “How long, Lord?” These are some thoughts to ponder shared at my church: “Sometimes the trials suck the life right out of us. The struggle is real. But so is God! A joyful attitude can make us better, instead of bitter. It takes time to get to somewhere good.” “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:4 I choose to believe! The Heart of Acceptance, Finding Zachary is our feature story. I met Alyssa recently and God put it on my heart to let her share her experience, strength and hope with you. I have come to believe that nothing happens by accident. She is a strong woman with a beautiful family please read it. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank my friend Joanne Augusto for the guidance, inspiration and support she has given me to lead a healthier life style. It has paid off in mind, body and soul. In every issue she shares just a little piece of her knowledge in our column Holistic Health. Stop by and see her at Nutrition World. You won’t be wasting your time! Better Living continues to bring you good reads, great deals and a little something extra. As a reminder, Spring Training begins this month and the St. Lucie County Fair is in town. Happy Valentine’s & St. Patty’s Day! Thank you for your continuing support! It’s all about love my friends ;-)

Joyfully,

The TASTE

Tutto Fresco

A visit to Tutto Fresco, snuggled up next to the PGA Village clock tower in St. Lucie West, is truly a cultural and culinary delight. Sit back and prepare to be pampered in either the elegantly appointed dining room, the casual grill room, or the relaxed outside patio, recently covered and appointed with fire pits and heaters for those chilly evenings. Co-owners (and cousins) Joe Gambina and Pasquale Lamarra came to Port St. Lucie from South Jersey twelve years ago, opening the first Tutto Fresco down on Port St. Lucie Blvd and Westmoreland. Buoyed by the public’s enthusiasm for their cuisine, they decided to come to their current location on St. Lucie West Blvd, just over I-95, in 2012. Pasquale is the Head Chef. He laughingly shares he has been in the restaurant business since

he was a day old – he got the first day off. His family owned several very popular establishments across South Jersey from Atlantic City to Cherry Hill. The cousins’ mission is to “Bring Justice to Italian food in America”, and they have succeeded. Tutto Fresco translates to Everything Fresh. Start your meal with the mussels. Joe and Pasquale take their mussels seriously, adhering to the New Jersey adage that if at least half a dozen don’t fall on the floor on the way to the table, they haven’t put enough on the plate. Or perhaps you would prefer the Langusto – a savory combination of lobster, diver scallops (U-10 size, meaning they’re so large, there are under 10 per pound) and jumbo shrimp. Who would think to order steak at an Italian restaurant?

Please do. Their Steak Sinatra, with a gorgonzola crust and a red wine demi-glace, can be cut with a butter knife and melts in your mouth. Dietary restrictions? Just let the kitchen know – vegan, glutenfree, Chef Pasquale can accommodate them all. Joe takes his commitment to the community seriously. His passion is the Boys and Girls Club, to whom he donates bikes at Christmas. He also participates in the Homes for Heroes mission. His staff all know his belief that Family is Everything and appreciate his compassion and understanding. The Tutto Fresco experience is the perfect setting for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner on Tuesday, February 14th. There will be a special (and still secret) menu. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended. Or swing by any Friday or Saturday night for a late bite and live entertainment on the patio.

to tie your shoes. Whether you are repetitively walking, climbing stairs, or sitting long hours at your desk, getting stretched is important! Stretch Zone® “reeducates the muscles,” which often result in the baby boomer population living a more active and pain free lifestyle. There are many benefits from getting stretched. Stretch Zone works with the muscle tonus (muscle’s nervous tension) in a scientific way:

The benefits of the Stretch Zone Method® include: • Correcting compensational shifts and muscle imbalances • Increase and maintain range of motion • Enhance physical and athletic skills • Improved sleeping patterns • Increase muscle relaxation • Relieve stiffness and soreness • Feel lighter & younger • Reduction in Stress The major difference between other modalities and Stretch Zone is the Stretch Zone® Patented Protocols and the Stretch Zone® Patented Stabilization System that takes the positioning and stabilization of clients to a whole new level. The adjustable belts, pads and straps allow for the speedy extension of muscles further than the central nervous system would normally permit making an imprint on neuromuscular system.

The TASTE Vista Grille

What an enjoyable evening! Vista Grille was easy to find and the warmth and architectural features that greeted us were a pleasant surprise. Susan and George Tsikoudis designed the restaurant almost nine years ago expressing their passion in this beautiful setting. While the atmosphere has an air of sophistication and elegance, Vista Grille is family friendly and also has dogfriendly outdoor dining along with an intimate area for special events like rehearsal dinners or meetings.

The Vista Grille is family friendly and friendly to your wallet. You will be treated like an old friend. Breakfast is served all day, come for their Liver Lyonnaise, Sunset plates are $10.00, and they have a full beer and wine selection. If you are one of the many regulars you’ll want to check out the new menu for the New Year - a sneak peek - George’s take on Shrimp and Grits, Flatbreads, Roasted Chicken Crepes, and Mykonos Chicken. If you haven’t been yet I highly recommend you visit soon! Literally two minutes off the turnpike, in the Coco Vista Plaza at Port Saint Lucie Blvd (PSLB) and SW Cameo Blvd - look for the palms wrapped in lights - or from St. Lucie West get on Crosstown Parkway and turn right onto SW Cameo until you cross PSLB then take the first left. Enjoy!

Chef George (originally from Greece) shops locally to create his fresh-made American and Mediterranean delights (none of that generic restaurant supply stuff here). The spanakopita appetizer ($6.50) was outstanding - spinach, Feta and herb filling and flaky phyllo crust! The Moussaka was superb - a traditional Greek dish ($11.50) - savory layers of eggplant, potatoes and other fresh ingredients topped with their own bechamel sauce accompanied by a healthy-sized portion of pasta and fresh leafy greens salad. The salmon entrée ($13.95) was a generous serving enhanced with a perfect glaze of lemon/orange zest and honey, then charbroiled – my choice of two sides was tender-crisp vegetables and scratchmade mashed potatoes. The rice pudding was a warm hug for your Facebook: Vista Grille mouth - mixed in a smooth creamy sauce - not too sweet – just right! 466 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd. • Port St. Lucie, FL 34953 by Julie White Coco Vista Plaza • 772-873-8808 B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. Finding Zachary

Alyssa & Zachary. Mommy kisses

“Two years ago autism was just a word to me. …I want to share my strength and my hope.” 14

BETTER LIVING & MARKETPLACE MAGAZINE • BLMMAG.COM

R

ecently you may have heard statistics showing a rise in the diagnosis of children with autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, in the year 2000 the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder was approximately 1 in 150 children and in the year 2012 the prevalence was 1 in 68. There are many more statistics available but, as the CDC website states, “. . . a true increase in the number of people with an ASD cannot be ruled out.” Alyssa wants to share her experience and how her world has changed. Alyssa explains “Two years ago autism was just a word to me. Since my son Zachary received the diagnosis of autism there is so much I have learned and I am not going to be quiet about it. I want to share my strength and my hope.” Alyssa clarifies: “I agree we have vaccines that are important. I am not against vaccines but I want them to be safe for everyone.” Alyssa’s Journey: “By age 12 to 15 months Zachary was developing normally meeting milestones (mimicking, repeating words, playing normally) and would eat anything that was put in front of him, but within 6 weeks of receiving the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine (so by age 17 months) my son was completely gone. I saw an immediate change in him. Then, at his 2-year checkup the nurse nonchalantly mentioned that he had failed his 18-month autism screening; I had not been advised of this at the time. The pediatrician offered assurances and insisted that I was overreacting but after repeated requests I was successful in getting a referral to a neurologist; I had to fight to get the referral from the pediatrician. The neurologist played with Zachary for 2 hours and confirmed the diagnosis of autism. Zachary doesn’t want to eat anymore. He needs a sense of order and his world is confined within his bubble. He no longer plays like other children – instead of driving his trucks around, he lines them up. As far as child development he is not a typically developing toddler. He has some of the traits associated with autism (which I researched). His equilibrium is off, he doesn’t want to eat, he exhibits stimming – repetitive movements (everyone does this to get comfortable but his is to the extreme – for instance he needs to bounce constantly). We have routines that help him

B A G E L B R O T H E R S O F N Y. C O M

15

stay comfortable, like brushing his extremities in a fixed designated sequence.” After dedicated research Alyssa started changing Zachary’s diet to exclude gluten and dairy and trying to use all organic ingredients and this helped him. “After he was exposed to gluten accidentally, within a week he reverted to crawling and had no eye contact and became combative.” She has also found that dairy causes constipation in him; she has found that the health of the gut definitely contributes to his behavior. Knowing that early intervention was critical, Alyssa began working to get occupational and speech therapy for Zachary and her plight to get ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) treatment was exhaustive. To cover expenses she bakes made-to-order cupcakes and cakes using her Italian grandmother’s recipe; this allowed her to be able to pay for therapy at first. She reports: “Therapy is working, my savings account is gone but I am blessed.” With her full-time job, when does she have time? In the middle of the night. Her pledge: “I’ll do what I have to do.” Besides the daily stresses that come with life in general, raising a child with autism can have an adverse effects on a marriage but Alyssa stresses: “My husband and I are coming together in order to heal our son. It is a team effort and without him I would be lost and vice versa.”

Alyssa reflects: “I have been mad, sad, now we are finally getting into a routine. I have started a blog.” A good day – a happy day – “he ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on gluten-free bread!” As Alyssa talks about Zachary her face lights up and her smile shines. “He is my ‘Angel Baby’ - he is so sweet. I wouldn’t change him. I want him to be the best he can be.” Alyssa’s hope: “More and more everyone is afraid – no one wants to touch this subject. I am telling my story to let you know what I experienced. I am not going to tell people what to do but I encourage them to read and do research and make their own decision. Don’t take anything for granted. Seek out health care providers willing to treat outside the box. I don’t want you to live my life, walk in my shoes, to have your normal child disappear. A popular pithy quote, attributed to Mark Twain, goes, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Whether Twain actually uttered this observation is debatable; the truth behind it isn’t. We frequently see current patterns that resemble patterns in history. The year 2016 is now history, but what we see today resembles what we saw a year ago: We refer specifically to patterns in interest rates. Could we see a 3.5% quote on a 30-year loan by July? We can no longer discount the possibility. If we do see it, history will not only have rhymed, it will have repeated. Aromatherapy A

romatherapy is a fascinating alternative medicine that involves the use of volatile plant materials, also known as essential oils that can be aromatically inhaled by patients of a wide variety of health conditions. It is often used to improve mood, change cognitive states, and can also be utilized as a supplemental medicine. Aromatherapy has been around in some form for thousands of years, but it wasn’t until the 11th century when steam distillation first made it possible to properly remove the essential oils from plant materials. Since then, cultures around the world have utilized aromatherapy for a wide range of functions. I can’t imagine a day going by without having my oils to use. Before I even start the coffee pot I put peppermint oil in a diffuser to wake me up and get my mind going.

by Joanne Augusto Owner of Nutrition World

After the shower I use coconut oil mixed with patchouli to renew skin cells and hydrate my skin. On my face I use Holy Basil to keep my skin healthy and ward off age spots. At night I usually have a diffuser going in each bedroom. My son’s favorite is lavender to calm him and help him sleep. While my daughter needs the breathing blend to help her not snore or do mouth breathing. That blend consists of rosemary, cloves, lemon, cinnamon and eucalyptus. My favorite is frankincense. Although it is very expensive this one dates the furthest back in history for many amazing uses, it helps me feel balanced and definitely keeps my immune system strong. There are many great books on aromatherapy. As well as recipes for home uses, even cleaning. I try to use my oils for everything. Unlike medications there are normally no side effects if used properly.

If you would like to begin with a few, here is a list of the most popular oils and their uses: Lavender - Soothing sleep aid, mood booster Lemon - Cognitive alertness (great for cleaning) Orange - Promote feelings of joy Peppermint - (My favorite) Promote mental focus (cover up pet smells) Rosemary - Focus and concentration

Every day, all day long, everywhere you go, you worship. It’s what you do. It’s who you are. We all are worshipers, created to bring pleasure and glory to the God who made us. I don’t know whether or not you consider yourself a “worshiping” kind of person, but you cannot help but worship -- something. It’s what you were made to do. Should you for some reason choose not to give God what He desires, you’ll still worship something -- exchanging the Creator for something He has created. Think of it this way: Worship is simply about value. The simplest definition I can give is this: Worship is that thing we all do. It’s what we’re all about on any given day. Because worship is about saying, “this person, this thing, this experience (this whatever) is what matters most to me… it’s the thing I put first in my life.” That “thing” might be a relationship. A dream, Friends, Status, Stuff, A name, Some kind of pleasure. Whatever name you put on it, this thing or person is what you’ve concluded in your heart is worth most to you. And whatever is worth most to you is -- you guessed it -- what you worship. Worship tells us what we value most. As a result, worship determines our actions, becoming the driving force for all we do. So how do you know where and what you worship? It’s easy; you simply follow the trail of your time, your affection, your energy, your money, and your loyalty. At the end of that trail you’ll find a throne; and whatever; or whomever; is on that throne is what’s of highest value to you. On that throne is what you worship. Sure not too many of us walk around saying, “I worship my stuff, I worship my Xbox, I worship my job. I worship this pleasure, I worship her; I worship my body, I worship me!” But the trail never lies. We may say we value this thing or that thing more than any other; but the volume of our actions speaks louder than or words. In the end, our worship is more about what we do than what we say. Just a thought. Pastor Mike PS: I was made by God to worship God. (We all were)

St. Lucie County Fair Returns February 24!

T

he St. Lucie County Fair was first held February 25 – March 6, 1966. Deggeller Attractions was the first Midway operator and Dru Hilson, a high school senior was the first Fair queen. The Fair was held adjacent to the St. Lucie County Airport. A lot has changed since those early years. The Fair moved to its current location at the intersection of Midway Road and Okeechobee Road in 2003. The fairgrounds, one of the largest in the state with 250 acres, features several permanent buildings onsite and the Bud Adams Arena. Last year they added a new small animal barn that will accommodate over 200 animals. The Fair runs for 10 days each year and is filled with great family fun and outstanding entertainment. It all starts with thrilling rides on the midway. The annual petting zoo, livestock show, arts and crafts, school displays, racing pigs, demolition derby, rodeo, amazing food, live entertainment and so much more, fill the fairgrounds each year.

38 Special, The Guess Who, Kellie Pickler, Little Jimmy Dickens and Tracy Byrd to name a few. These talented artists have brought fair crowds to their feet with their incredible performances. The St. Lucie County Fair has always been extremely proud of the youth exhibits held each year at the fair. The market steer and swine auctions have received state recognition. The record held for top price for steers is owned by Ryan Holley at $10.50 per lb. in 2004. Evan Miller (2004) owns the record held for top price on the swine at $42.00 per lb., which is also a state record. Youth exhibits include sewing, food, knitting, quilting, wood working, small animals, large animals and a multitude of educational projects. The St. Lucie County Fair is the largest event on the Treasure Coast with over 150,000 attendees. Every day there

is something new and exciting like Car Load Tuesday, Dollar Thursday, Family Day, Kid’s Day and Midnight Madness. There’s a huge midway with over 40 thrilling rides and a special Kiddie Carnival for the little ones. Live entertainment includes Slamabama, Rocket the Robot, AGRI-Puppets, Lloyd Mabrey, Lady Houdini, PRCA Wide Open Rodeo, Demo Derby and much more. And this year parking is free. The St. Lucie County Fair dates are February 24 thru March 5. You can purchase your tickets in advance and save. Please visit stluciecountyfair.org for more information.

we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”

The other day, we received a simple message from some listeners, but it was one that meant a lot to us here at Christian FM.:

I

t reminded us of a great truth -- that one of our biggest missions as a Christian radio station and as believers is given to us in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” One of the great things about encouragement is its snowball effect. When we’re encouraged, we’re usually inspired to pass it along to others. Just think, you could encourage someone today and start a chain reaction of empowering others and spreading hope. And the best thing is, our Creator and Savior started it all. 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ . . . who comforts us in all our troubles, so that

Who can you encourage today? Even if you feel like you’re the one who could use a pep talk, turn the tables and find a way to reassure a friend or family member. At Christian FM, in an effort to make the encouragement snowball even bigger, we’re expanding our reach in the form of the Christian FM App. You’ll be able to listen live, send us photos or video, connect with us on social media, send a text, listen to our podcasts, or pay a visit to the open mic! Plus, the Christian FM App comes just in time for Care-athon, February 6th through the 10th, when we ask for your faith promise of support for this radio ministry. We want to hear your story. Because through the microphone of Christian FM, it could reach more people than you ever thought possible. We hope you join us in our new venture by sharing your stories with us, encouraging others and us as we seek to to grow closer this year.
