May
Wishing all the mothers, especially my editor, a fantastic Mother’s Day! This year, I’ll have a preMother’s Day celebration the first week of May in Florida celebrating my daughter-in-law’s graduation from nursing school.
These are a few pictures of my mom and I on a few of our vacations together. I believe we have been to New York to visit my brother David at least 20 times, plus some fun East Coast road trips and excursions while we were there. We’ve been to Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia, just to name a few. We also visited Washington, D.C. during one of our “New York” trips. Lots of great memories and thankful to have them.
Don’t forget to take a look at the list of Stroll Lakeside sponsors. Please use their services and thank them from all of us. If you utilize any of these businesses, let us know so we can give them a shoutout in Stroll Lakeside.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
Pruning Tips: Clematis
SUBMITTED BY RESIDENT LORI SCHARMACH
Do you have something special you would like to share? Email strolllakeside@n2co.com
Are you excited about getting into the garden? Me, too. I asked Kristine Dillinger, Lead Horticulturist at Lakewold Gardens, to share her tips on pruning clematis and transplanting in spring.
Pruning Tips: Clematis
Does your Clematis not flower well or at all? The best way to problem solve is to see where they flower as it puts on new growth. Mark new stems with ribbon and watch them carefully. If flowers do not appear on them this year, do not cut those stems as they will produce flowers next year.
Clematis fall into three pruning groups based on the type of wood on which they flower.
• Pruning Group 1: Early flowering Clematis (flower on old wood). Lightly prune after spring flowering and then leave them alone summer through winter to preserve buds for next year.
• Pruning Group 2: Flowers twice a year (heavily in the spring and lightly in late summer). Clean out dead wood in
early spring and then do a second light clean up after the first flush of flowers.
• Pruning group 3: Flower on new wood. These are the easiest to manage as stems can be cut to the ground in fall or winter.
Planting Tips: Pay Attention to the Root Ball
When planting trees, shrubs and perennials, take time to loosen the root ball, removing any burlap or wire cages, and prune out any circling roots. The direction roots are placed in the planting hole is how they will remain for the duration of the plant’s life. You want well-formed roots spreading out in all directions to anchor the plant.
Plant Health Tips: Fertilize Properly
• Healthy trees and shrubs fight off pests and diseases more easily, so keep your trees fertilized with organic tree fertilizer stakes and follow good cultural control practices. In the garden we utilize the WSU extension’s Hortsense website (hortsense.cahnrs.wsu.edu) to keep current on best practices.
IGNITE THE POWER OF STEM CELLS FOR FRESH, HEALTHY, YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN.
DERIVED FROM THE SCIENCE OF CELL RESEARCH.
In addition to cell peptides, Cellusana products contain a harmonious blend of herbal oils and other natural ingredients. Our commitment to using only the finest materials means that every Cellusana product is gentle, effective and beneficial for all skin types.
• Test your soil before fertilizing lawns and only add nutrients when recommended. Unneeded nutrients can leech into our lakes and potentially cause harmful algae blooms. The University Massachusetts Amherst Soil & Tissue Lab provides convenient test results. See their website (ag.umass.edu/services/soil-plant-nutrient-testing-laboratory) for instructions on how to take a soil sample.
For more tips and resources, attend one of Lakewold’s Behind the Scenes tours (lakewoldgardens.org/group-tours/). Each tour ends with ample time for questions with a member of Lakewold’s horticulture team, which has a combined 25 years of experience in stewarding public gardens.

Shrimp Pasta Salad with Tomatoes and Capers
Yield: 4 servings as a main course, 6 to 8 as a side. (Leftovers should be refrigerated and allowed to come to room temperature before serving.). Start to finish: 20 minutes
INGREDIENTS:
• 8 ounces mini penne pasta
• ½ cup mayonnaise (see Cook’s note)
• 1 teaspoon lemon zest
• 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
• ½ teaspoon salt
• ¼ teaspoon black pepper
• 1 tablespoon capers, drained
• ½ cup sliced grape tomatoes
• ¼ cup finely chopped scallions (see Cook’s note)
• 8 ounces cooked and peeled shrimp, thawed if necessary (see Cook’s note)
Cook’s note: Use reduced-fat or light mayonnaise if desired. Use whites and tender green tops of scallions, also called green onions. For testing, we used cooked and peeled frozen shrimp, but you could use any kind of cooked shrimp (or cook and peel them yourself).
Cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water. Meanwhile, in a large serving bowl, mix together the mayonnaise, zest, juice, salt, and pepper. Stir well. Add the capers, tomatoes and scallions. Stir well, and set aside. When the pasta is ready, add it and the shrimp to the bowl. Toss to mix well. Let stand at room temperature 15 minutes for flavors to develop, and then serve. (The salad does not have to stand if you are in a rush.)

As graduation caps fill the air this spring, the minds of parents and grandparents across the nation turn to the future of their beloved graduates. For those considering the financial journey ahead, the spotlight falls on 529 college savings plans. May 29 is designated as 529 Day, providing an opportune moment to explore the advantages of these plans and reveal how savvy investors can leverage them to fulfill their students’ educational dreams.
BY SHAUNA
Invest Boldly from the Start Adopting an aggressive investment approach early on in the 529 plan can yield substantial benefits for families with a longer investment horizon. The power of compounding works best with time, so allocating more toward stocks and growthoriented funds can help maximize returns over the long term.
Explore Multiple State Plans While every state’s 529 plan is usable for any eligible educational institution, families are not limited to their state of residence. Researching plans from various states can pinpoint the optimal combination of investment options, fees and tax benefits.
Gift Smarter Frontloading
529 contributions allows for effective utilization of the annual gift tax exclusion. Contributions of up to $18,000 annually ($36,000 for married
couples filing jointly) can be made without triggering the gift tax, allowing other donors like grandparents to make substantial gifts to their students’ plans without negative tax implications.
Tap into Family Funding
Extended family members from grandparents to aunts, uncles and even that generous second cousin can add funds to a child’s 529 plan. By rallying support from an expansive family network, a substantial sum can be accumulated each year toward the student’s educational future.
Maximize Estate Planning Benefits 529 plans offer distinct estate planning advantages, such as the option to contribute five years’ worth of funds at once without incurring gift taxes. This approach reduces the family’s taxable estate and ensures a solid financial foundation for future educational aspirations.

Nurturing Longevity: A Glimpse into Costa Rica’s Blue Zones
WRITTEN BY RESIDENT YORLENY CLAPPER
Nestled within the verdant landscapes of Costa Rica, lie mysterious enclaves known as Blue Zones – where longevity isn’t merely a possibility, but an ingrained way of life.
It’s within these picturesque settings that my beloved Costa Rican grandma flourished, “La abuela Toña”; Toña Grandma, her remarkable life spanning an astonishing 107 years. Born and raised amidst the natural splendor of Costa Rica, my grandma’s daily routine was a symphony of simple yet profound rituals. From tending to her garden and nurturing fruit trees to sharing hearty meals with cherished
loved ones and neighbors alike and going to church every Sunday, her life exuded a sense of abundance and connection that was truly extraordinary.
Despite enduring a challenging childhood as an orphan, my grandma approached life with gratitude and contentment, except for the occasional outburst when her steadfast resolve was challenged. One such instance occurred in her later years when a doctor prescribed a strict diet, banning her beloved red meat and avocados. Unyielding in her convictions, she defiantly returned to her favorite dish – the
hearty Olla de Carne, a vegetable beef soup that embodied the essence of her culinary heritage. Olla de Carne includes lots of beef, potatoes, carrots, ears of corn, yucca, green plantains, onion, cloves of garlic, cumin, sweet potatoes… Bon Appetit!
Costa Rica’s universal healthcare system, established in 1942, ensured that my grandma received the medical attention she needed, although she rarely required more than minimal medication, even in her twilight years when doctors made house calls. In the heart of Costa Rica’s Blue Zones, time seemed to ebb and flow with the rhythms of nature, fostering a sense of community and reverence for life’s simple pleasures. Reflecting on my grandma’s life, I’m struck by the profound lessons she imparted through her actions – the importance of human connection, the nourishment of body and soul, and the intrinsic value of living in harmony with nature. Her unwavering commitment to walking everywhere and surrounding herself with loved ones underscored her deep-rooted connection to her surroundings. While my grandma didn’t reside in Nicoya Peninsula, one of the renowned Blue Zones documented by Dan Buettner, her neighborhood boasted a remarkable number of residents over the age of 90, a testament to the enduring principles of healthy living and communal support.
As May 5th approaches, it serves as a poignant reminder of my grandma’s birthday, a celebration of her enduring legacy and the timeless wisdom she bestowed upon our family. In the embrace of “Costa Rica’s Blue Zones”, my grandma didn’t just find longevity – she discovered a life brimming with purpose, meaning, and boundless love. For that, I am eternally grateful.

Community First Village
WRITTEN BY KAI CURRY
“It’s one of the biggest crises in humanity. What’s happening on our streets is not healthy for anyone and we can’t keep turning our eyes away, or just accepting it as ‘the new normal.’ This is a solution that is proven and works and everyone thrives, not only the people in the Village. The entire broad community thrives.”
So spoke our neighbor, Angela Connelly, when describing the problem – chronic homelessness -- and a proven solution called Community First! Village. It’s a concept that Angela and other activists in our area, such as Tacoma Rescue Mission executive director, Duke Paulson, had a chance to see in person during a visit to a successful example in Austin, Texas. Community First! Village was founded in Austin by Allan Graham, already known for his nonprofit, Loaves and Fishes, which delivers food to the homeless via food trucks across the United States. “Housing does not solve homelessness,” Graham has been known to say. And Angela adds, “it’s the community and it’s belonging – THAT solves homelessness.”
“The biggest common denominator for people experiencing homelessness is a loss of your community around you: family, friends, your support network that bails you out when things get tough,” said Duke, who confirmed with us that Tacoma Rescue Mission will be overseeing a Community First! Village in Spanaway. “What we’re creating is community again,” so that people will “have a safe place to say, ‘I’m accepted even though I was homeless and I have all these issues.’ It’s a place for people to buy in because in order to live there, you work and you pay rent. It’s not a freebie, it’s not a handout, it’s not a shelter where it’s a free stay and then done.”
Community First! Village is a “master-planned” neighborhood where applicants must agree to abide by certain rules and regulations in order to live there. They pay rent, and they participate in community maintenance. There are on-site opportunities to become involved and to earn a living, such as through gardening, and there are efforts to connect with neighbors through activities like a farmer’s market or a movie night. Duke is not sure yet which activities Pierce County’s first Community First! Village will have, yet he knows it will be a “great place for the community to come in and be involved” and a great place to volunteer. Staff will be onsite 24/7, and there will be partnerships with local medical multicare and mental and behavioral health services.
“What’s interesting about this model is that in many ways it actually saves money because in the hospital world, the medical world, emergency rooms are kind of a broken situation,” Angela pointed out. “Many people who experience homelessness go to the emergency rooms because there’s no other care, so having a medical clinic in [or near] the village is a win-win-win for everybody. That’s how I would describe the entire community: a win-win-win for everyone.”
Angela, who has been volunteering to help others since she was 16, knows what she’s talking about. She walks the walk. She started out at Nativity House, and was on the board for Catholic Community Services. She is also part of Coffee Oasis in Kitsap County, which helps homeless teens. “I believe in finding models that work,” she said. “This model works. It’s been replicated in 20 other cities around the U.S. and it is working.” According to both Angela and Duke, there’s a “gap” in the county, and the country, which is “permanent housing for people experiencing homelessness
in a permanent community.” Particularly hard hit are the elderly and those with substance abuse and addiction issues, as well as those with physical disabilities.
“This is a village geared to say we’re helping the chronically homeless, the people who have multiple issues,” said Duke. Community First! Village provides “the time and space to help people that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to” and this particular Village will be geared towards the elderly.
“In Pierce County we see more and more people who are older coming into our shelters. People in their 60s and 70s are living in our shelter right now.” These are people who have not had a sense of community for a very long time; who likely have no family, no support; and shelters such as Tacoma Rescue Mission are only temporary, while other initiatives such as the “tiny houses” springing up around the area do not offer the same sense of ownership.
“The average person who comes and lives [at Community First! Village] has been homeless for more than five years so they have suffered a lot of trauma,” Angela explained. “They are alone.” When visiting the Village in Austin, Angela and Duke witnessed how living there turns people around. “It’s a process of going from a hardened, isolated life -- this is so beautiful -- after a time, they start wanting to reach out and serve each other and the community,” Angela found during the Austin visit. “It’s like this unfolding of settling in and peacefulness which they haven’t experienced in a long time… it solves so much of the trauma.”
For those concerned that having such a community near one’s own residence might pose a risk, Duke and Angela are quick to say it is exactly the opposite. “This is not an encampment. This is not a homeless site,” Duke assured. “It’s like a retirement community.” Echoing Angela’s sentiment, he added, “For someone who has been homeless…to have

a place that’s their own -- they don’t want to get kicked out.” These are not small houses but more like studio-sized apartments. They have bathrooms, living spaces, closets, porches. “This is one dignified space in a beautiful setting,” Duke continued. “They’re engaged and they’re paying and they’re trying to be here.” Duke prefers to call them “cottage homes.” “People here are choosing to obey and work and pay and keep it clean and nice. If they don’t obey the rules, they don’t stay here.”
Duke predicts that construction will break ground on Pierce County’s flagship Community First! Village around August 2024. Because this is starting from the ground up,
and all infrastructure is needed, it will take about two years to reach completion. “I absolutely think that once people see it and say, ‘Oh! This could be done in Washington,’ “ then he is sure that our neighbors will be on board. “I went down [to Austin] skeptical. I came back a believer because I saw the difference, and I think the same thing will happen here.”
“It takes a village to make a village,” Angela observed. She, too, is sure that if locals “see the reality of it, the actual day to day reality, it’s like a beautiful tiny village. There’s no garbage. It’s safe. In some ways, it’s the best neighbor you could imagine.”

MEET
FAMILY GARZA THE
IIn the aftermath of an unimaginable tragedy, the Garza family’s narrative unfolds as a poignant tale of resilience and compassion. Having lost their only son, Diego, in a devastating car accident last year, the Garzas opted for an extraordinary response. From the depths of their sorrow emerged the DMAC Foundation, a nonprofit established so that no one else will experience what they did - a testament to love’s ability to transcend grief.
Their son, Diego, whom this endeavor is founded on, was an amazing, brilliant young man. At only 18, he had accomplished so much, and his future was so bright. Already a junior with a full academic scholarship at Gonzaga University, he was a double major in Finance and Business Management IT Systems and was soaring both academically and socially. Diego lost his life instantly in a tragic single car accident while driving back to campus very early on the morning of February 18, 2023. Diego was always a protector, a giver; and they find comfort in hearing all the stories of how he helped everyone else #GetHomeSafe on campus. Prior to leaving for college, he volunteered his time and labor at every charity event for the Garza family. The DMAC Foundation was created in his honor, to ensure others get home safe to their families and fulfill their purpose and dreams. With the community support, tools and resources they provide, they hope to honor his legacy for years to come.
“He was our youngest and our only boy,” Brooke Beaty, Diego’s mom, told us. “His future was so bright.” He was a 4.0 student and had just aced his midterms when he passed away, just before his 19th birthday.
The Garzas established the DMAC Foundation in honor of their son this year. #GetHomeSafe is the keystone program of the foundation, and will launch at Gonzaga in April 2024. “We founded the foundation originally as a way to get kids home safe, so no one else has to go through this kind of tragedy again,” said Brooke. In partnership with a rideshare service, #GetHomeSafe allows students to get a ride back to their lodging by using a code specialized to their campus. Gonzaga as the first school to have the program

because that’s where Diego attended, and because Diego’s friends and the University itself were so wonderful to them after Diego’s passing. It’s a wonderful school that offered the Garzas “so much support,” Brooke said, that they “wanted to give back to others in his honor and start where he was. He loved it there.”
The family first thought of the idea within a couple of days of Diego’s passing, when they were at the University, in one of the many drives and hard conversations with a Gonzaga staff member who was a former police officer. They asked him if there were any programs on campus to help students get home safely, or programs in the area and he said no, “but that would be so wonderful.” Then, during the service and a social gathering held for Diego, where his friends spoke and visited with the family, they learned more about their son’s remarkable influence. “His friends said to us, ‘Your son got me home safe…he would walk all of us (girls) back to the dorms after every event.’” This picture of their son was in keeping with what they already knew about him, yet so much more. “You teach your kids to be good people, but [don’t know] what they do when you’re not around,” Brooke commented. “Part of why we wanted to do this was in honor of who he was; and of course, too, it helps us turn something tragic into something hopefully amazing that can save other lives.”
The DMAC Foundation is a family effort. Their eldest daughter Jasmine, 27, a graduate of Foster Business School at the University of Washington, is the partnership director. Their daughter Selena, 23, a graduate in Social Work from Grand Canyon University, coordinates the community outreach. “It’s amazing how it has come full circle to be in this endeavor together,” said Brooke. “It really fills us up.” Another project of DMAC is Project 22, formed to fight the opioid crisis. With Project 22, the DMAC Foundation distributes Naloxone, a medicine known to reverse overdose, such as by fentanyl. The Foundation is an authorized distributor of this legal and life-saving medicine, and also provides overdose training and outreach. They plan to train those close to university students, such as resident assistants who live in the dormitories, so that they can help save lives in the case of an accidental overdose on a college campus. Giving back to the community was in Diego’s DNA because it is in his family’s DNA. The Garzas have always done a variety of charitable activities throughout the year.
The DMAC Foundation continues this work on a much higher level- such as feeding 50 families at Thanksgiving, supplying Christmas stockings to the unhoused (full of items to keep warm – scarves, etc. – and items to keep clean, i.e. toothbrushes). They also have blanket and warm coat drives for the homeless, and during the cold months, will give out hot chili, hot cocoa, and hot coffee, and throw Christmas parties at senior living facilities for the residents.
Brooke is a Better Homes and Gardens real estate agent, who has been in the industry for 20 years as of this year. Her vast experience in helping others, marketing experience, and flexible schedule helps with the Foundation, which is a lot of work. “It’s nice to be flexible with my schedule and help jump in wherever.” She also donates 10 percent of every home she

sells to the Foundation. “Every home bought and sold with me helps our community and gets our children home safe,”
Brooke says. Her husband, Steve Garza, is the president of the commercial and residential flooring company, Associated Inc. He has been in the flooring industry for 30 years and just opened their newest commercial location in Milton. They also have a showroom in the Seattle Georgetown district for residential designers and builders. Steve loves playing poker with his Eagle Point Poker Club on a weekly basis. In addition to helping with the Foundation, daughter Jasmine works in corporate marketing for the Seahawks, while daughter Selena works for the state’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families as a youth counselor. Mom and Dad live on American Lake, while their daughters live close by in Tacoma.
“We love spending time with our family on the lake and boating,” Brooke told us. “That’s our favorite pastime, on the lake every weekend.” Their dog Kona, a Gorden Setter/ Labrador mix, also loves the lake and boat rides. “We put on a big show at Eagle Point on the Fourth of July, with the neighbors, complete with fireworks and a DJ. The fireworks show is about an hour long!” Family time is of utmost important to the Garzas who cherish every moment together. The kids all grew up with busy schedules of sports and activities, and Steve would help coach, while Brooke would always volunteer as team mom and help run the booster clubs. “We have always been very involved with our kids,” Brooke said. “We love traveling together, usually to Mexico and Hawaii, tropical places with lots of sun and sandy beaches.” Brooke loves to host and cook in the summer, or Steve will break out the BBQ. “When it’s nice, we host our family most weekends and we have big cookouts,” with smoked meats, or carne asada. Steve’s Hispanic culture provides a love for a lot of homemade Mexican food, but also love Italian dishes, like Brooke’s homemade lasagna. Both Steve and Brooke were born and raised here in the Pacific Northwest. They have been living on the lake for three years. They absolutely love the beauty of the lake, the sunsets, and all the natural wildlife, such as watching the many eagles in Eagle Point.
“Humble beginnings and true love created the family that stands here today. Our son Diego’s untimely passing reminded us that life is fleeting. Through unthinkable tragedy, our community has shown us unwavering support. We are committed to continuing to spread this love back to the community,” Steve says.
“While I wish the reason for our foundation was different, I believe that there is a divine plan at work. We are here to make a difference, to leave a lasting impact on this world, and to honor the memory of our son and brother, Diego Michael Garza.”
“Diego was a protector, a giver, and touched everyone with his presence and service,” Brooke says.
“The DMAC Foundation believes that one act, such as a safe ride home, a meal, or youth support services will bring our community to victory in his honor and memory.”
While the loss of Diego was devastating for the family, they have found a way to turn that devastation into something so meaningful and lifesaving. DMAC Foundation’s #GetHomeSafe program will step in when college kids are at their most vulnerable, and prevent more car accidents, which are a leading cause of death in that age range, especially among males. They plan to extend the program beyond Gonzaga this year to other college campuses as soon as possible. The DMAC Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is still looking for corporate sponsors and community support to keep the programs sustainable. As Brooke told us, “these kids with bright futures need a way home safely, that they can easily access, so no other family has to suffer a tragedy like this. It gives us a little bit of hope, and fills our soul and our hearts, to work on this and see this help change other kids’ lives.”
This initiative, born out of tragedy, becomes a source of hope and inspiration, a poignant reminder that even in the face of loss, love can prevail and create a ripple effect of positive change. For more information, or how to help partner, sponsor or volunteer, visit www.DMACEnterprises.org.

Bob Larson Plumbing
WRITTEN BY KAI CURRY
“Exceptional service” … “Professional” … “Went the extra mile.”
These words from just one of multiple glowing reviews should tell you that there is something special about Bob Larson Plumbing in Tacoma.
“Close to perfect.” … “A+++” … “Rock star plumber!”
For 32 years, Bob Larson Plumbing has provided superior service to South Sound residents. Our neighbors go so far as to call them their lifetime plumber “for as long as I live” or to say Bob Larson is “officially our plumber.” More unusual still for a plumber? “Loved having them here.”
Robert Johnson, a plumber himself since 2002, was working for Bob Larson when he was asked if he’d like to take over as owner. “I got very excited about the idea. It was
a new challenge.” At first, Robert was a little bit intimidated by the idea of being at the helm. “Although I was a very good plumber, I knew nothing about running a business.”
But then original owner, Bob, put his worries to rest. “Bob provided me with the training, mentorship, and opportunity over the next few years to learn that side of things. Bob has just recently retired and now I have the opportunity to provide the same atmosphere and training for as many people as I can.”
Currently, there are 25 smiling faces working at Bob Larson Plumbing. To summarize, “Bob Larson Plumbing’s focus is on residential plumbing, water heaters, and radiant systems. Our slogan and true belief is that we want to be your P.A.L. (Positively Affect Lives).”
It’s clear that they do just that. No one wants to call the plumber – unless it’s a plumber from Bob Larson Plumbing. It’s one of the most essential functions of our homes, yet also
one of the trickiest and, well, embarrassing! The folks at Bob Larson Plumbing have got you covered. “I know how much of a positive impact being a plumber has had on my life and I love trying to do that for others now,” said Robert. “It wasn’t really a question of deciding on the industry but more of doing something I truly believe in and am very passionate about.”
Robert started his plumbing career in southern California at the age of 18. He left for a few years to join the United States Army, where he was deployed to Iraq as an infantryman. As he observed during that time, “even in the middle of all of that, people still needed plumbing. I truly saw the importance of what a plumber does and how we help protect the health of the nation.” That’s a strong motivation and a well-intentioned one. “Our team of highly skilled and experienced plumbers is dedicated to providing top-quality plumbing services to homeowners and businesses in Tacoma and the surrounding areas,” says their website.
“At Bob Larson Plumbing, we understand that plumbing issues can arise at any time, which is why we offer fast, reliable, hassle-free plumbing for our customers. We provide prompt and efficient solutions to all your plumbing needs, from minor repairs to major installations.”
Also important to Robert is mentoring. “We have built a company that not only is very competent when it comes to being your P.A.L. and fixing your plumbing problems, but we are also very proud of the environment we have created that allows young men and women to excel. We live to elevate the lives of others and use every resource at our disposal to help build a good life for as many people as we can. I believe this is not a normal focus for most companies but due to this group mindset, we have built a team that is second to none.”
When your employees are happy, then your customers are happy, and this is true for Bob Larson Plumbing. As far as recommendations for your own home’s plumbing infrastructure are concerned, Robert encourages the same type of attention you would give to another of your household’s most important belongings – your car. “Treat your home as you do your vehicle,” he said. “Everyone takes their vehicles to the shop for ordinary maintenance, oil changes, upgrades, etc. Your home is no different and one of your biggest assets. Regular plumbing inspection and regular maintenance will extend the life of your plumbing much longer than you would think. Catching a problem when it’s small is the goal, not waiting for a full failure.”
Robert grew up in Los Angeles, and enjoys fishing, diving, and spending time with his wife and two little girls, aged 10 and 12. “My daughters are locals, born and raised in Tacoma,” he told us. Robert and his beautiful wife, Kateryna have been married for 15 years.
Bob Larson Plumbing provides plumbing installation and repair in the Tacoma, Federal Way, and Olympia areas. Plumbing at Bob Larson includes water heaters, gas lines, fixtures such as shower heads, as well as sewer replacement. They can check indoor and outdoor pipes, come to your aid in the case of frozen pipes, or clean your plumbing pipes with a high pressure water method called “hydro-jetting.” They offer maintenance plans and a satisfaction guarantee.

Hair-raising tales of my trials with hairdressers
WRITTEN BY RESIDENT CAROL KALAHAN
There seems to be flawed communication between me and hairdressers. I asked one hairdresser to leave my bangs long. “You betcha,” she chirped as she combed them straight up and cheerfully whacked them off so short that I looked like Jerry Lewis in “The Nutty Professor.” Another episode miraculously transformed me into a Harpo Marx look-alike.
Once I went to a beauty shop in a hotel arcade and asked for a very slight trim in the back of my head, just to even it out somewhat. I was immediately shaved up the back of my head U.S. Marine style. When I returned to the hotel room in tears, the whole family couldn’t help themselves – they burst into spontaneous laughter. Luckily that was a three-week vacation so I had to hide only another couple weeks after I got home but I still wore a lot of babushkas that summer.
I tried a new technique. I fixed my hair carefully at home so that when I went to the beauty shop, I said, “See how my hair is now? This is how I want it done. The part is here. This goes back and the sides are this way. My bangs slant this direction.”
“Got it,” the girl said briskly as she tightened the wrap around my neck and dropped me back towards the shampoo bowl. As soon as she had washed my hair she whirled me around in the chair and said, “Now then, how shall we do your hair?” I explained the whole thing again and she proceeded to do it the same as she had done the lady who preceded me.
I have a new girl now named Dawn who is good, but about three weeks ago I couldn’t get an appointment with Dawn, so I tried a new stylist at another salon. “No backcombing, please,” I said, “OK, OK,” she said, “Just a little right here.” And she grabbed a shank of hair and virtually pulled me out of my chair as she happily backcombed. “No backcombing,” I repeated. “OK, OK,” she said, “I’ll just even you out on the other side of your head.” “No more backcombing,” I said fervently. “OK, OK. I’ll just finish up,” she said as she continued her lightning strokes on the rest of my head.
Just recently I needed an appointment on the same day I called for one, which necessitated trying yet another new stylist and I received one of the strangest hairdos yet. She ignored my haircut and departed into a fantasy land. I ended up with a pageboy that traversed across the middle of the back of my head and the rest of my hair went straight down to my neck. Each side drooped dejectedly over my ears a little like white earmuffs.
The next day I went to church somewhat late and had to sit in the second row up front, supplying the people behind me with mirth and merriment as they contemplated the back of my head. I had never seen anything like that hairdo, and I hope no one else will ever have to, either.
The past aside, I have a new hairdresser with whom I’m satisfied. It is, so to speak, the Dawn of a new day.
