Well, we have settled into the New Year nicely, but it certainly hasn’t been a slow start here at the Foundation!

Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Guidelines which are also due to be released in 2020.

This is a huge step towards helping the thousands of Kiwis who live with this condition, which includes emphysema.

At the end of last year, we began updating the national Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines. This is a large body of work, which we hope will be released in the first half of this year, and is led by Scientific Advisory Board member Professor Richard Beasley.

These updated Guidelines will inform best practice for health professionals, doctors, nurses, kaiawhina, and others in the respiratory field.

Following the release of these Guidelines, the Foundation will update all of the resources that go with them - including the Summary Guidelines, Asthma Management plans, Diaries, and the My Asthma App. Collectively it’s a big project, but one we here at the Foundation know is paramount to better asthma management.

Over the past year the Foundation heard from many concerned parents, teachers, societies, health professionals and other NGOs on the subject of youth vaping. As there were no regulations (but they are coming soon) around this industry in New Zealand, we decided to do something about it.

As CE, I have been busy meeting with various health sector authorities including being part of a Health Promotion Agency NGO working group initiative, which seeks greater alignment across respective lifestyle related areas. I was also able to represent the Foundation at the 2020 Waitangi Day Garden Reception held at Government House, which is always such an honour and privilege.

We are also pleased to be working on the first ever New Zealand Chronic Obstructive

The “Don’t Get Sucked In” campaign launched on February 3rd, with the sole purpose of educating youth around the harms of vaping.

Feedback to the Foundation was that many young people are under the impression that vaping is totally harmless, and we know that this is not the case.

With World Asthma Day coming up on May 5th, our focus will be on ‘six breaths saves lives’, to educate children and teachers about what to do when there is a emergency.

Last year we had almost 200 schools and organisations get involved, and this year we hope to reach even more! We’ll be sending postcards out to all schools across the country, with activity and fundraising packs ready to go.

Respiratory Community News Heremana te Kōpūtōtara touring again!

Heremana te Kōpūtōtara (Sailor the Pufferfish) and his friend Hinerongonui Kingi are swimming into kura throughout Gisborne and Wellington this February and March to present their bilingual asthma musical road show!

The educational musical educates tamariki on the triggers and management of asthma, and what to do in an asthma emergency.

So far, Heremana has educated over 1200 tamariki and travelled to over 25 schools throughout Te Ika a Māui.

Manawatū breathing easier

New World community gives back

Towards the end of February, Letitia and Ruby visited the Manawatū Breathe Easy Support Group.

A few months back, the Foundation was fortunate enough to participate in New World Porirua’s customer vote program.

Alongside an update on the forthcoming asthma and COPD guidelines, Letitia discussed the differences between asthma and COPD. It was also raised whether or not there is any research into whether asthma may be genetic, with Letitia discussing the research on the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) genetic variation.

New World shoppers were given the opportunity to vote for their preferred charity or community group throughout the month of November. From the votes collected, the Foundation received a total of $600 which went towards supporting our national COPD awareness campaign.

A big thank you to Shona and Owen, who graciously invited us to meet with the Manawatū Breathe Easy support group. It was lovely to meet you all and we hope to be back again soon!

Health Professional News Meet Joanna: Research & Education Manager ARFNZ

New study explores childhood asthma A study published last month has shown a correlation between overuse of cleaning products and early childhood asthma. The study, led by Canadian scientists at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, involved 2,022 families and suggests that children have 37% higher risk of the illness in ‘extra clean’ homes.

The team found that the quarter of children whose families had the highest frequent cleaning product use were the most likely to develop asthma. By age three, these children were 37 per cent more likely to have a diagnosis of asthma and 35 per cent more likely to have a recurrent wheeze when compared with the quarter of families with the lowest cleaning product use.

The Foundation is pleased to announce the appointment of our new Research and Education Manager, Joanna Turner.

A pharmacist by trade, Joanna brings a wealth of experience and knowledge on medicines and medication adherence, and will be first point of contact for many in the education and research sectors.

Joanna is responsible for overseeing and managing the development and implementation of key education programmes.

Joanna also sits on the ARFNZ Scientific Advisory Board and assists in the development and dissemination of the NZ Child Asthma Guidelines, the NZ Adolescent and Adult Asthma Guidelines and the NZ COPD Guidelines.

The problem of airborne chemicals – many from cleaning products – is exacerbated by modern energy-efficient, air-tight homes. Reducing the use of sprayed chemicals, or specifically choosing products without volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and Sensitive Choice approved for asthma and allergies, can help your patients. NZ Respiratory Conference 2020 The Foundation is proud to bring you the biennial New Zealand Respiratory Conference.

The conference is the largest gathering or hui for health professionals with an interest in respiratory health in New Zealand. Delegates from a variety of professions join us each year, including GPs, nurses, pharmacists, specialists, educators and researchers.

The New Zealand Respiratory Conference (NZRC) will be held on 5-6 November 2020, at Te Papa, Wellington. Links to tickets will be available from April 1st from arfnz.org.nz

Keeping safe from Coronavirus A

lthough the 2019-nCoV coronavirus has not yet reached New Zealand, preventing this infectious disease starts with good health practice and proper hygiene technique.

Coronavirus belongs to a group of viruses that include the common cold. People of all ages can be infected by coronavirus, with older people and people with pre-existing medical conditions such as asthma more vulnerable to becoming severely ill with the virus.

As with other respiratory illnesses, infection with 2019-nCoV can cause mild symptoms including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and fever. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, breathing complications, and other complications.

Symptoms of 2019-nCoV are similar to a range of other illnesses, such as influenza, and do not necessarily mean that someone has coronavirus.

Older people and those with chronic health conditions are at higher risk of complications from viruses like coronavirus than others. This includes those with asthma, bronchiectasis, or COPD. Every year people end up in hospital with complications from influenza and other respiratory illnesses, and similar issues could appear with this novel outbreak.

Protecting from common respiratory illnesses will help protect from possible infection. This includes washing your hands with soap and warm water regularly, avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness, avoiding touching your nose and mouth, and covering your mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing.

Wearing a medical mask can help limit the spread of some respiratory disease.

However, using a mask alone is not guaranteed to stop infections and should be combined with other prevention measures including hand and respiratory hygiene and avoiding close contact – at least 1 metre distance between yourself and other people.

hese days it seems like vaping is everywhere, but how much do we really know about e-cigarettes, vapes and e-juices, and are they as safe as we think?

counter-balance the dialogue surrounding vaping within New Zealand, and bring to light some of the potential health risks vaping devices can have.

Coinciding with the beginning of the new school year, the Foundation recently launched a new vaping education campaign ‘Don’t Get Sucked In’, to educate youth about the adverse health effects of e-cigarettes and vaping.

Richard Dykes, President of the Auckland Secondary Schools Principals Association and Principal of Glendowie College, says that too many young people believe vaping is safe. “I and other principals greatly value the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation stepping into the void that has been allowed to occur in the tobacco and vaping industry,” says Richard. “Vaping has been promoted as a smoking cessation strategy, but the impact on our rangatahi has been ignored, and this campaign addresses that. It’s pleasing to hear a New Zealand voice that will help educate our young people.”

The campaign was launched in response to recent requests from schools across New Zealand for vaping education material to curb the growing trend of teen vaping.

Letitia Harding, CE of ARFNZ says that, “there are concerns from health organisations, educators, and medical professionals around the rapid uptake in youth vaping. For example, many young people believe that vaping is harmless or is just water, but we now know there are health risks. Don’t Get Sucked In will give young people the tools and information to make an educated decision.”

The Don’t Get Sucked In campaign challenges students to find out if they have been ‘sucked in’ to some common misconceptions surrounding vaping. The campaign’s messaging is designed to

Understanding Asthma I

n New Zealand, over 597,000 people take medication for asthma; that’s an estimated 1 in 7 children and 1 in 8 adults. For children, asthma is one of the most common causes of hospital admissions. In 2015 alone, 87 people died from asthma in New Zealand.

Currently there is no cure for asthma, however there are lots of things you can do to manage it better so that it doesn’t impact on your life too heavily. The first step is to learn as much as you can about the condition and the steps you can put in place to control it.

What is asthma?

People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs. The airways may tighten, partially close up, swell inside, and make more mucus when faced with certain triggers. This makes it hard to breathe in, and even harder to breathe out.

What causes asthma?

We don’t know why so many people have asthma, but we know that it is most common in English speaking countries. It may be related to modern living, such as changes to the environment or diet.

Although asthma cannot be cured, there may be times in your life when you think it has gone away. Most of the time, with the right information, education and attitude, you can manage your asthma so that you can go about day-to-day life without symptoms.

What are the symptoms of asthma?

If you have asthma you might sometimes feel wheezy, short of breath, tight in the chest, or have a long lasting cough.

You may experience one of these symptoms or a combination of them. Symptoms may occur suddenly as a flare-up or ‘asthma emergency’, or they may be with you most of the time. Asthmatics often get hay fever or eczema as well, and have a family history of these conditions.

For most people, asthma is just something to be careful about.

However, every year, some people do die from asthma. Certain factors can cause asthma flare-ups; these are called ’triggers’.

Common triggers include animal hair, dust mites, pollen, smoke, exercise, the common cold, or changes of temperature.

Follow a Self-Management Plan An Asthma Action Plan, filled out by your doctor, can help you work out how well you are and what to do if your asthma gets worse or better. Research shows that people who follow self-management plans have better control over their asthma. You can download your own action plan from arfnz.org.nz.

Use a Peak Flow Meter You can learn the patterns of your asthma by using a peak flow meter, which tells you how fast you can blow air out. When your airways are fully open you will get a high reading, and when your airways start to get narrow the reading becomes lower. You can use these readings, along with your symptoms, to decide when to change your treatment by following your Asthma Action Plan.

Take your medication as prescribed It is important that you understand how your medicines or asthma inhalers work, and then take them as prescribed. There are different devices to deliver your medicines, as well as devices like spacers that are important in delivering the medication effectively.

Know the steps for an asthma emergency An asthma emergency can happen at any time, so it is important to know the steps of asthma first aid and be quick to act if you are ever in an emergency situation. The best way to remember the steps is the 6 breaths, 6 puffs, 6 minutes rule. Take 6 puffs of your reliever inhaler, with 6 deep breaths per puff. Repeat this every 6 minutes until help arrives or until regular breathing returns.

Autumn Seasonal Tips I

t still feels like summer, but autumn is definitely on the way.

Keep yourself and those around you protected as the days get shorter with these seasonal tips.

Get immunised

People can easily identify that a product is asthma and allergy friendly by looking out for the Sensitive Choice® blue butterfly on product packaging in stores.

Flu can be anywhere, and people with respiratory conditions are more at risk than most. Autumn is the best time to get your annual flu shot, to make sure you’re protected before flu season strikes. If you have asthma and are on a regular preventative therapy, or have another chronic respiratory condition, you are eligible for a free flu shot from a doctor or nurse.

Remember, influenza is not the same as a cold; it’s a serious viral infection that can make pre-existing conditions like asthma, bronchiectasis, or COPD, even worse. Immunisation is the best protection against the flu, and is especially important for people 65 years and over, pregnant women and young children. Even if you still catch the flu after immunisation, your symptoms are likely to be less severe.

Know your triggers There are over 700,000 people living with respiratory conditions in New Zealand, many of whom don’t even realise that how they feel isn’t healthy. Air pollutants like car exhaust, smoke, and other irritants are known to cause major health issues, but many simply go on with their day-to-day lives unaware.

Air pollution in the environment can cause and aggravate respiratory diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer. Find resources and information on the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation website about how to better manage your condition.

Create a healthy home

Create an asthma action plan

In New Zealand, approximately 70 to 80 percent of asthma is associated with allergies, with mould being one of the leading triggers. Many homes in New Zealand are both cold and damp, which creates the perfect environment for asthma and allergy triggers like mould. To help reduce this impact during the colder winter months, it is essential to create a warm, dry and pollution free environment.

As the old saying goes, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Having an action plan prepared is a great way to manage your asthma and provides a source of information when you need it most.

Look for the blue butterfly The Foundation provides the Sensitive Choice® programme alongside the National Asthma Council Australia, which links people with asthma and allergies to hundreds of products that demonstrate a potential benefit to those with respiratory

You can download action plans from our website or use the digital plan on the My Asthma App. Show the plan to your doctor or nurse during your next visit, and they will be able to sit with you and fill out all the medication details.

Having an action plan in place means that you can take control of your asthma and not let it control you. You will also feel more confident in managing triggers that may arise as the weather cools down and we enter a new season.

All About Allergies

We asked the wonderful Kaytee Boyd from Sensitive Choice partner, ecostore about what we can do to reduce our exposure to everyday products and substances that may cause allergic reactions. We found her advice incredibly practical and informative and we hope it helps you too!

What is an allergen?

Your incredible immune system has a very important job: to defend your insides from invaders such as bacteria and viruses that can harm you. But when it decides to go to war on substances it shouldn’t, that’s an allergy. ‘Allergens’ are things like dust mites, eggs, peanuts, fragrances, animal dander, or pollen.

Allergy, sensitivity or intolerance – what’s the difference?

Allergy means an immune system reaction to a substance, usually within an hour, with flushed skin, difficulty swallowing, nausea, hives, watery eyes, sneezing, wheezing, & shortness of breath Sensitivity involves no immune response, but can still yield debilitating symptoms like fatigue, weight loss, runny nose, and a general feeling of being unwell.

Intolerance means the body lacks a chemical or enzyme needed to digest certain food. For example, ‘lactose intolerance’ is caused by a lack of the enzyme lactase, needed to digest milk.

All of the above can be quite serious, so it’s a good idea to see an integrative practitioner or your doctor about symptoms which appear to be linked to exposure to certain substances.

What can we do?

• Look after your gut health (it’s about 80% of your immune system) • Don’t use antibacterial soaps and hand sanitisers unless absolutely necessary • Vacuum carpets with a HEPA filter at least twice a week to reduce dust • Avoid artificially fragranced products (that’s MOST on the market!)

Child Symptom Diary

This brochure is an asthma action plan for doctors to complete and give to child patients and their parents/ caregivers. It includes how to use a spacer, how to clean an inhaler, and actions to take for different stages of asthma – from well, worse, to worried.

The Symptom Diary brochure is for doctors to give to their child patients and their parents/caregivers, and is used in conjunction with the Child Asthma Plan to track and identify key aspects of a child’s asthma.
