Select your appliances It’s important to choose your appliances before finalising your kitchen to ensure they fit.

You’ll need to check that there is enough ventilation around appliances such as wall ovens, fridges and wine cabinets. Refer to the manufacturer’s installation guides in case there’s anything a little different about the appliance you’ve picked.

Choose your colours, finishes and fixtures

If this is your dream kitchen in your dream house, go all out. If it’s a property you’ll be selling or renting out in a year or two, keep those bespoke extras to a minimum as you won’t be the one using them when you sell up.

Renovating your kitchen is an exciting change to make to your home, so it’s worth spending some time and thought on your design and product choices.

INGREDIENTS 200g dark chocolate, broken • 1 cup (150g) plain flour • 1 avocado, mashed (approx. ½ cup) • ½ cup (100g) brown sugar •

Preheat oven to 180C. Line a small square baking dish with baking paper.

In a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate in 30-second increments, stirring in between until chocolate is nice and smooth for around 1½ minutes. Add the remaining ingredients into the chocolate and stir well to combine, this will turn it into a thick batter.

Gently press the batter into the dish and spread evenly. Bake for 20 minutes or until done. Cool completely before slicing.

Make your counter space look industrial

Take a look at the walls in your kitchen space, particularly where you need to support a load.

If you have walls where you don’t need as much support, think about converting it to a glass surface and bring in as much natural light as possible.

Concrete is becoming more and more popular for home interiors with this material being used on walls, floors, ceilings and countertops. Flexible in its use, durable and strong, it can be left in the natural state giving it a more industrial look or can have finishes applied providing more colour and design.

To give your kitchen more of an industrial feel, put in a stainless steel or concrete top on your counter space, and instead of cabinets, have exposed metal shelving. This gives you easier access to your pans and other items and gives your kitchen the appearance of an industrial workshop.

Introduce some copper

Let the lights hang down

If you have some copper pots and pans, you can install a copper rack that hangs from the joists or the ceilings, and then hang the pots from it. The more metal (and particularly the more antiqued metal) you have going in the kitchen, the more effective the industrial look will be for you.

If you look at pictures of old factories, you invariably see light fixtures hanging on long downrods from the ceiling.

Replicate the feel of an industrial workspace by running lights down above your kitchen island, creating an art deco effect and a conversation piece in your kitchen.

Expose the joints and ducts overhead Exposed ductwork and beams give you an authentic industrial feel. Take out the finished ceiling in your kitchen so that the joists overhead can show through, as well as the ducts. If your ductwork isn’t really worth showing, you can have new ones installed, or you can refinish existing ducts.

INGREDIENTS 4 eggs • ½ cup plain flour • ¼ chopped onion • 4 cups of grated potato • 2 tbps of garlic • 1 tsp of smoked paprika • 4 rashers of streaky bacon • 4 tbps of butter • 4 fresh vine ripened or ox heart tomatoes • 2 tbps of extra virgin olive oil • 250g fresh ricotta •

Melt the butter in a skillet over a medium heat.

Add the onion, paprika and garlic to the melted butter. Stir and cook until the onion is tender for between 5 - 7 minutes.

Once the potatoes are cool, peel off the skin and grate. The potato will resemble chunky mashed potatoes. Preheat the waffle iron.

Combine the onion mixture, mashed potatoes, flour, eggs, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ½ teaspoon of black pepper in a large bowl until well blended. Scoop ½ a cup of the mixture into the centre of the waffle iron and close the lid. Cook until golden brown for between 3 - 5 minutes.

Grill the bacon until crispy, slice the tomatoes, sprinkle with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil. To serve, place the ricotta on top of the waffles, add the bacon, sliced tomatoes and pour on the excess olive oil.

INGREDIENTS 1 large whole snapper (about 1kg), cleaned and scaled • 3 spring onions, roots removed • a thumb-sized knob of ginger, peeled and cut into thin matchsticks • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine • 2 tbsp soy sauce • ½ tsp salt • 1 tsp caster sugar • 2 tbsp vegetable oil • coriander, to serve •

Heat your ASKO steam oven to 100C on full steam. Place the fish on a plate. (As a general rule, you can use any plate that is dishwasher safe in your steam oven on the steam setting.)

Cut thick diagonal slits into both sides of the fish about 10cm apart and all the way to the bone. Trim the dark green tops from the spring onions and place them into the cavity of the fish. Finely slice the remainder of the spring onion and set aside in the fridge.

Mix together the soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, salt, and sugar and stir to dissolve. Pour the mixture over the fish and into the cavity.

Scatter the top of the fish with the ginger.

Place the fish into the oven for 30 minutes then remove and carefully open the aluminium foil, making sure not to lose any of the juices inside. Scatter the fish with the reserved sliced spring onion.

Heat the oil in a separate pan until smoking and pour over the fish, spring onion and ginger. Scatter with coriander and serve.

Simply turn on your cold tap, put the food scraps into your sink and feed them into the Insinkerator flange that replaces your normal plughole. The food waste is then ground into tiny particles by an internal grind ring, with no blades involved.

The food waste is virtually liquified, then flushed out of the disposer to safely flow into your sewage system, not your storm water system.
