Fortunately, teachers and parents worked together to reconfigure those events in ways that made them safe, enjoyable, and memorable.

Although the 2019-20 school year was unprecedented, it helped us truly appreciate the creativity, resiliency, and caring of our school community. Those qualities and attributes have defined The Bay School for 40 years. Thanks to students, parents, faculty, and staff, we collectively demonstrated that the school’s reputation is well deserved.

Thank you for your contribution to lifting up those perceptions and reality.

I am sure most every other school administrator and teacher would agree.

Using The Bay School as an example, think about what had to happen in order to maintain the mission and responsibilities that we had to fulfill once COVID-19 arrived in Maine. For us, it started in March on Friday the 13th—a bad omen. That was when we sent our first communication to our school families about what COVID-19 could mean to our school’s operation. Things moved quickly: By 10:30 a.m. the next morning, we announced we would be suspending school for two weeks while we and the rest of the nation awaited guidance from health experts and public officials.

What followed is well known. We and other schools quickly pivoted to remote learning for the remainder of the academic year, something for which PreK-12 schools had not anticipated or prepared.

But we at The Bay School did it. To be sure, our quick adjustment to remote teaching and learning was not flawless. Teachers, students, and parents experienced difficulties and frustration at times. However, it soon became clear that we made the shift to remote learning remarkably effectively and productively. I truly believe we benefited from the creativity of our faculty and staff, the patience and determination of our students and their families, and the open-mindedness that is part of The Bay School’s ethos.

Pandemic-related precautions and protocols during the spring of 2020 cost all of us time together, in person and on a daily basis. Those personal interactions are one of our most cherished qualities at The Bay School. They are critical to our sense of community and reinforce the special qualities of a Waldorf education. We had to

They reflect time from March 16th - June 7th and show our students continuing their studies, exploring the natural world, and sorting out what it means for them to be away from their friends and school community and learning from home. I imagine these scenes look similar to pictures taken from around the world. In this way, we are all connected.

John Burns Board of Directors

We recognize and thank John Burns for his 5 1/2 years of service to The Bay School Board of Directors. John was appointed in 2014 and served as both Vice President and President during his two terms of service. He chaired the Buildings and Grounds Committee for several years and also was an active member on the Finance Committee. In 2015-2016, he chaired the search committee to hire a new Head of School. John is a strong advocate for the school both on campus and within the community, leading the effort in Blue Hill to improve pedestrian safety through improved sidewalks and walking paths (including South Street), which has resulted in a grant from the State of Maine of $400,000 toward this effort. John encourages collaboration and always has his eye on both the short and long term needs of the school and its success. We are grateful to John for all of his efforts on behalf of The Bay School community!

Nicole Cardano Spanish Teacher

Nicole Cardano joined The Bay School in the fall of 2019 as the Spanish teacher, just after our newsletter went to press. Nicole has a background in theater as well as Spanish. She is the Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit Theater Today, which works with the process of theater as an experiential learning technique. Nicole has a degree in Theatre and Spanish from Saint Michael’s College in Vermont and studied for a year in Puebla, Mexico at the University of the Americas. A little over a year ago, Nicole traveled to Europe, including Spain, with her middle school aged daughter. This journey further brought to life the attributes of learning Spanish through the practice of theater. She is happy to be a part of the educational community here at The Bay School.

Isla Day, ʻ20, Grand Prize Winner (among nearly 3,500 entries) of the “Can You Find the Mapman” Scholastic Contest

Scholastic Magazine challenged students from around the country to figure out Mapman’s mystery destination and then create a map of the country. Congratulations, Isla!!

A Title Could Go Here Beckett Slayton ’13 is co-chair of the Blue Hill Sea Level Rise Task Force.

We chatted with him recently about his work with the committee.

How did you get involved with the committee?

I wrote an op-ed in the Weekly Packet last spring about the climate crisis and Maine’s coast, and my former Bay School basketball coach Jim Dow encouraged me to join the committee.

What has the committee been working on? We have several tasks that the Select Board has assigned to

us. We submitted a report this summer that identified the best sources of data currently available to project sea level rise and the town infrastructure most likely to be affected. Our next steps are to recommend priorities for mitigation measures and determine what funding mechanisms might be available. It all figures into broader comprehensive planning needs of the town, which needs to be done to tap into available funding.

What are the committee’s goals? Mitigation is much more cost-effective for Blue Hill than adaptation. In

our report, we tried to highlight some of the most important sea level rise issues for the town. The more sea level rise becomes part of town discourse, the better in terms of taking action.

How does the work you’re doing with the committee fit into your studies? I’m an environmental

studies and government major at Bowdoin College. I’m really interested in climate change mitigation through public policy, and in looking at adaptation potential. Right now I’m taking a GIS class focused on climate resilience, and I’m really enjoying the opportunity to look at adaptation strategies using these tools.

Isla Day Animation Mentor: Jeff Altman

What sparks the idea for an 8th Grade Project? What challenges arise along the way? What does each student take away from the experience? Alumni of The Bay School, their parents, and longtime readers of our newsletter will recognize so much of the inspiration, problem-solving, and newfound self-knowledge in the project descriptions here. We hope you’ll join us in applauding these eighth-graders’ remarkable ability to adapt, focus, and forge new ways to accomplish their goals in a time of extraordinary challenge.

Sayer Bramblett-Williams Clothing Design Mentors: Philli Irvin and Everett Lindholm-Fiske ‘09 For my 8th grade project I learned about the complicated art of fashion and sewing. Fashion has played a big role in my life, and it was the perfect choice for my 8th grade project. This project has been a big learning experience for me, and I intend to learn and work in this subject for a long time. I did change directions after school shut down in the spring. I wasn’t able to meet with my local mentor anymore, so I didn’t get to do more pattern making from my own designs. But I was still able to sew from a pattern I bought, and I made three outfits for my final presentation. Since then, I’ve made more altered clothing, which was part of my project, and I think I’ll keep doing that. Maybe I’ll make some original designs in the future.

Violet Czuj Bread Baking Mentor: Blossom Kravitz

Bread is one of the most popular baked goods in the world. It was started in 8,000 B.C. and has influenced the baking world so much since then. I’m glad I got the chance to explore this fascinating subject and learn more about the history, chemistry and ingredients of bread.

For my 8th grade project I learned about different forms of animation and how to make my own. Animation was created in the early 1900’s to tell stories in a unique and understandable way. I’ve been interested in animation since I was about 6 years old. That’s when I made my first stop-motion animation with Legos.

I started this project in September and spent about 130 hours animating, building sets, doing research, and learning different techniques. I learned so many incredible things about the world of animation, and I am so glad I got a chance to create some work of my own.

Milo Fleming Ice Boat Restoration and Racing Mentor: Bill Buchholz For my project I learned how to ice boat. Iceboating is a winter sport done on frozen lakes across the country and the world.

The speed record for an ice boat is over 150 miles per hour and was the fastest way to travel before airplanes.This summer I built a rear axle onto one of my ice boats and traded the ice runners out for wheels! In September I participated in the first annual New England Land Sailing Loring Regatta in Limestone, Maine, competing against 20 other sailors on the two-mile long runway of Loring Air Force Base. I also purchased a cold water rescue suit so I can keep up the skills I learned as an Ice Rescue Technician.

Elias Lieser Exploring the Game of Tennis Mentor: Finn Ducker For my 8th Grade project I chose to learn about four different aspects of tennis, a game I’ve loved for a long time. I learned about the history of tennis; read a biography of a tennis great; learned about kinesiology and how it relates to tennis; drew a muscular illustration of a leg; and did a daily work-out routine.

I learned so much about the sport and have enjoyed every part of my experience.

Marie Nemeth Flying an Airplane Mentor: Steve Lieser For my 8th grade project I learned about many different aspects of aviation. I had the opportunity to explore a whole world l never knew about, from what the weather determines about flying to why an airplane actually flies. I had so many unforgettable experiences and have learned so much. I took my first flight in December 2019 and completed a ground school course during quarantine.

Oona Sacaridiz Interviewing Women in Leadership Roles Mentor: Brook Ewing Minner For my 8th grade project I interviewed four women in leadership roles in Maine and created a website to share the interviews. When I started my project, I had never interviewed anyone. I made a lot of progress in just the first three interviews. My fourth interview felt more like a conversation than an interview, and I got a lot of really good replies to my questions.

This project provided me with the opportunity to explore the world of journalism. I was also able to learn about website making and discover some amazing stories about women in our community. It was a great experience, and I have learned so much in the process.

Lyra Smith Designing a Signature Handbag Mentor: Autumn Soares For my 8th grade project I made a handbag.

There are so many designs out there, but I really wanted to create something that was unique and innovative. I learned so much throughout this process, not only how to construct something but how to persevere and be flexible. I am glad that I was able to make something without putting limits on the design.

June Page Composing a Song Mentors: Paul Sullivan and Lori Sitzabee For my 8th grade project I learned how to write a song. I’ve always had a love for music, and exploring this process was such a fun experience. When writing a song, there are many choices to make. One of my biggest challenges was determining whether to create the lyrics or the melody first. I learned so much and am grateful for this amazing opportunity.

Hadley Reynolds Drone Photography Mentor: Will Reynolds For my 8th grade project I studied drone photography.

I have always loved film, and I thought this was the perfect project for me. Despite hiccups along the way, I managed to make something I’m really proud of.

This experience taught me not only about drones and film but also about myself: how I handle pressure, plan, and work under time constraints. I came out with a better sense of self and certainly an ability to adapt to new plans.

Julia Traub Portrait Drawing Mentor: Robert Shetterly For my 8th grade project I chose portrait drawing. I love drawing and wanted to learn more about drawing the face and its features. I have drawn everybody in the 8th Grade class, and I am so grateful I had this opportunity!

I chose my project in mid-October and began practicing right away. I had to stop working with Rob during March because of Covid restrictions, but I applied what he taught me to my work, which was very helpful. I still draw portraits for fun, and it’s satisfying to see how much progress I’ve made since I started. I have taken away so many new skills from this opportunity, and I am very grateful for everyone who made it possible.

The intrepid Class of 2020, a vibrant and

energetic group of young people, soared into an eighthgrade year unlike any other. They arrived in their new big classroom, and began the work of establishing their own identity as a class of eleven. Any early trepidation lasted but a moment. Soon, delighted smiles and joyous laughter rebounded in our spacious room, and we were off!

Those bright autumn months were marked by eager learning, by close conversations, by earnest camaraderie, by time together in nature and in the classroom, on the court and in the fields. We found there were teachers all around us; the lively oven-fire, the written word, the authentic expression of a friend, the discipline of science, the rigor of mathematics and the zest of spoken language.

The sudden turn in March, which kept us home and carried us into a new kind of learning, surprised us all. Yet we found deep reserves of strength in the relationships we had been nurturing. Working digitally, connecting socially and academically via scheduled video calls, the 8th graders continued to forge ahead.

Spring rolled in, successive green waves and eventually even warmth, and the eighth graders presented their projects by video to a wider audience than ever before.

They articulated answers to project questions in a series of community wide (international, in one case!) video calls.

And when the month of June arrived, scented with lupine and lilac, it was time to graduate.

The sun shone for these eleven that afternoon and a soft breeze rustled through our beautiful outdoor gathering.

The graduates were excited, resplendent, and eloquent.

And as time passes, I remain so impressed by the striking resilience of this class, with their flexibility and perseverance in the face of these upending circumstances. Now they walk their high school halls, and I carry with me such deep gratitude for our time together.

Adam Chittenden Adam Chittenden and Landere Naisbitt are excited to announce their marriage October 10, 2020! Adam and Landere both grew up in Blue Hill and attended the Bay School, overlapping as a 1st and 8th grader.

Landere always wanted Adam to be her 8th grade partner for apple picking and pumpkin carving, and although that never happened, they are now happily partners for life! :)

Katama Murray After graduating from The Bay School in 2011, I moved on to George Stevens Academy and then to Plymouth State University in New Hampshire to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking. My work is inspired by the earth’s natural rhythm and our interconnectedness with the environment. Working with mixed media and different printmaking processes, I focus on collaborating with the natural world throughout my art practice in sustainable ways. I’m now working towards my Master in Fine Arts at Indiana University, and while I’m far from my peninsula home, I carry the essence of the coastal community with me. I hope all is well with everyone at school despite the challenges this year has brought us. I have been thinking about Apple Fest and autumn rituals from the good ol’ days there. Will Entwisle I have just begun my senior year at Wheaton College (MA) where I am majoring in International Relations.

I am living off campus in an apartment with my girlfriend Mia, where we have been making the best of an unexpected final year of college. At this time last year I was lucky enough to have Mia come visit me during my semester abroad in New Zealand. The picture I have attached is from our kayak trip along the coast of the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park.

Zeke Sacaridiz

Over quarantine I have been making music all day every day! I have been practicing for college auditions, as I will be applying to music school for jazz drums this coming year. In addition to drums I’ve been playing a lot of guitar, bass, and piano and have been writing a lot of music. I am currently working on an album and will be doing a live streamed performance with two other musicians, live from the Blue Hill Co-op website. Check the co-op website in the coming weeks for more information.
