Welcome to SPOTLIGHT 2019! Your presence tonight shows your support of our mission to make an outstanding Jewish education available to hundreds of children, who otherwise would not have this opportunity. You have made dreams come true – and for that I am deeply grateful.

Thank you to our dedicated co-chairs, Ellyn & Stephen Polakoff and Michelle & Steve Wions, along with the entire SPOTLIGHT 2019 committee, who have worked so hard to ensure the success of our annual scholarship event. Our dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers consider Beth Tfiloh more than just a school; it is the second home to nearly 1,000 proud students who are taught timeless Jewish values, and are educated as future leaders and committed Jews.

On behalf of the families and children whose lives you have touched in the most meaningful way, I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

Beth Tfiloh is a truly unique place that has given our family every opportunity to succeed and to reach their full potential. Our daughter Dara ‘05 went to Beth Tfiloh PreSchool and returned for High School by her own request; today she is graduating from law school. Our grandchildren, Lilly ‘22, Sophie ‘22, and Asher ‘24, children of Nancy and Ben, are current Beth Tfiloh students.

All Jewish children should be given such opportunities. We are thrilled and honored to co-chair Spotlight 2019 to give back to a school that has provided our family with so much hope and joy. The funds raised here will provide for continued scholarships allowing more families to join this wonderful community.

We would like to thank our co-chairs, Michelle and Steve, the 2019 Spotlight Committee, the Beth Tfiloh development team, and a special thank you to Dr. Schorr. We would also like to say mazel tov to our dedicated honorees, Tsipi and Michael Renbaum. Thank you to the entire Beth Tfiloh community for creating a place of safety, learning, and love for all of our children and for extending a warm welcome to new and returning guests alike. We are truly honored to be co-chairing Spotlight this year! The Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School plays a pivotal role in our family and our lives. We are beyond thankful for the Beth Tfiloh School and community for providing our daughters, Samantha and Emma, with an outstanding education. The transition from Krieger Schechter Day School to Beth Tfiloh was incredibly smooth and the continuation of rigorous general and Judaic studies was our family’s priority.

Today, Samantha is completing her freshman year at the University of Maryland, while Emma is a rising BT senior.

Spotlight is vital to the Beth Tfiloh community as the funds raised provide 50% of families with financial aid. We are grateful for the opportunity to make an impact on the school we love so much.

DON FELDER & BAND Four time Grammy award winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member, and New York Times best-selling author Don Felder is renowned as a former lead guitarist of The Eagles, one of the most popular and influential rock groups of our time.

Felder made his mark on numerous Eagles milestones throughout his 27 years with the band, including originating the music and co-writing their biggest hit – the iconic, Grammystudded smash “Hotel California.”

He is also celebrated for his lyrical signature guitar work on legendary songs like “Hotel California,” “One of These Nights,” “New Kid in Town,” and many others.

Felder has also collaborated with numerous music legends spanning the musical spectrum, from Elton John and Diana Ross to Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. He is currently touring worldwide in support of his recent album, The Road to Forever, which features the top classic rock single, “Wash Away the Pain.” Felder’s latest release, American Rock ‘N’ Roll, features some of the biggest names in music including Slash, Peter Frampton, Joe Satriani, Mick Fleetwood, Bob Weir, and many more.

TSIPI & MICHAEL RENBAUM 2019 SPOTLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP EVENT HONOREES

T

sipi and Michael Renbaum are longtime Beth Tfiloh members, active philanthropists, and committed to ensuring Jewish continuity and pro-Israel advocacy.

In 1971, Tsipi met the love of her life, Michael Renbaum, who was visiting Israel. A mutual friend asked him to deliver a gift to Tsipi, and seven months later, the two were married. Shared Tsipi, “It was love at first sight… we’re going on 48 years!”

The Renbaums consider Beth Tfiloh to be a community hub for thriving Judaism. With its vibrant synagogue, a highly-respected school, and a staunch Tsipi & Michael visiting the Kotel commitment to a in Jerusalem strong and secure State of Israel, the Beth Tfiloh community has been the perfect partner in helping the Renbaums fulfill their communal aspirations.

Following their marriage in 1972, Tsipi joined the Renbaum family’s consumer finance company working in administrative positions, helping raise two sons, and embarking on a career as a Jewish communal volunteer and leader.

Michael Renbaum, a Baltimore native, attended Beth Jacob’s Hebrew School in the early 1950s, where he was known to have spent time at Dr. Esterson’s chalk board, along with other students who now call Beth Tfiloh home.

A Journey to Jewish Leadership

Tsipi Elkayam’s father, Solomon, was a successful businessman in Casablanca, Morocco. To protect his family from rising Arab hostilities towards the Jewish community, Solomon decided it was time to leave everything behind. In 1956, the Elkayams made aliyah to Israel, via France, settling in Haifa. “My father was an ardent Zionist,” recalled Tsipi. “He always dreamt of immigrating to Israel with his entire family.”

Tsipi studied at the University of Haifa, where she later served as the Senior Executive Assistant to the Islam and Arabic Literature Department chair. She served as Executive Assistant to the Israel’s Foreign Ministry Department’s Chief of Protocol. In that role, she worked with legendary Israeli diplomat Abba Eban, and with the prime minister’s office during Golda Meir’s term.

Michael’s lifelong Jewish cultural identity was catalyzed in 1957 during an encounter in a baseball game at Pimlico Junior High School. “This experience has had a lifetime impact on me, and has shaped who and what I am to this day,” Michael recalled. “Near the end of the game, absent any provocation I was called a ‘dirty Jew’ by an opposing player. This was a first for me.

This profound moment exposed me to the reality I would live in and the vulnerability of being Jewish in a non-Jewish world. In the larger context, the positivity that has resulted from that experience has served both 5

as a blessing and a purpose for me… and I thank that kid every night.”

After graduating from the University of Baltimore with a degree in Finance, Michael launched a 40-year financial industry career by joining the family business. Years later, the business evolved after the Renbaums acquired charter of a small savings and loan. Since then, Michael has led several successful Baltimore business enterprises.

The Renbaums’ Beth Tfiloh Story

The Renbaums’ Beth Tfiloh story begins in 1988, when Michael’s mother passed away. As he considered where to say Kaddish, Michael attended services at many nearby synagogues.

“When I got to BT, it felt like home,” Michael said.

“In almost every respect, Beth Tfiloh replicated the warmth, the liturgy, and the Hazzan’s chanting that we so embraced at Beth Jacob. We were immediately taken with Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg’s compelling and introspective sermons. He was more than just our rabbi; he became a mentor and a source of strength and comfort when we needed it most.”

Renbaums’ connection to BT. “The blending of Beth Jacob and Beth Tfiloh’s cultures and traditions was fulfilling and nurturing for us,” Michael commented.

The Renbaums would also learn about Beth Tfiloh’s Jewish day school. “Dr. Zipora Schorr, BT’s Director of Education, is remarkably capable of finding the 61st second of every minute and the 25th hour of each day to passionately integrate education and life lessons into the lives of her 1,000 students.”

Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg, Dr. Zipora Schorr, and Beth Tfiloh’s Hazzan, Avi Albrecht, are at the heart and soul of the Renbaums’ Beth Tfiloh relationship. Rabbi Wohlberg, for his sermonic wisdom and unabashed support of the State of Israel; Hazzan Albrecht, a “special dear friend” who awakens their souls with his chanting and his energy; and Dr. Schorr, the engine that drives Beth Tfiloh School, delivering to its students 5,000 years of Jewish history, and all the while preparing them to make their marks on the world as good Americans, proud Jews, and strong pro-Israel advocates.

“Dr. Schorr relates to Beth Tfiloh students as if they were her own children and she is masterful at her profession, elevating Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School to national prominence,” said Michael.

The Renbaums express their gratitude for Beth Tfiloh’s embracing and supportive environment through substantial contributions of both their time and financial resources. Their support of both the Beth Tfiloh synagogue and school have made them bona fide pillars of the BT community. Michael, who served as a BT School Board of Trustees member, and Tsipi, donated their cherished artifacts from Beth Jacob Congregation to Beth Tfiloh. They have also been generous supporters of Beth Tfiloh’s vital Chazak Campaign.

While recently touring the school, the Renbaums observed students at work with STEM Center instructor Vince Bonina. “The way Mr. Bonina prompted his students to think ‘out of the box’ was absolutely awesome. He cleverly navigated them through the process of being able to resolve the answers to their own questions,” said Tsipi.

The Renbaums are in awe of the depth and breadth of knowledge BT delivers to its students on a daily basis. They also marvel at the “Rabbi Wohlberg and Dr. Schorr combo” — their passion for Klal Yisrael and their unwavering commitment to the school. As Dr. Schorr likes to say… “It’s in our kishkas.”

Beyond Beth Tfiloh The Renbaums also serve the greater Baltimore community outside of Beth Tfiloh.

Michael has served on the boards of the Jewish National Fund (JNF), LifeBridge Health, Northwest Hospital, and The Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.

He is also a past chairman of Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital.

In addition to their local generosity, the Renbaums’ sphere of influence extends abroad to Israel. Michael has served as president of the local district of the Zionist Organization of America, now the Baltimore Zionist District (BZD). He co-founded the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces’ (FIDF) Mid-Atlantic region, where both he and Tsipi served as board members. The Renbaums also served in leadership positions at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), Magen David Adom, Hadassah, and Israel Bonds.

Tsipi was honored for her Israel Bonds leadership with the organization’s cherished Golda Meir Award in 2012.

In 2014, she chaired the Israel Bonds Baltimore chapter’s instilled in them and their children.

“I’m an incredibly strong Zionist. That comes from my parents teaching me to be a proud Jew and knowing the history of the Jewish people,” said Steven. “Jewish continuity is at the core of who they are. I think that’s why they’re proud to be a part of Beth Tfiloh.”

upscale Fashion Show fundraiser, the only one of its kind in the United States. Tsipi served on the board of Jewish Family Services and is a proud life member of Hadassah, where she chaired the Women of Distinction Award and the Major Gift events.

Tsipi and Michael’s enduring commitment to the Jewish community and Israel are all underpinned by one vital mission: ensuring a Jewish future for their children, Steven Renbaum, and Stephani & Mark Renbaum, and their grandchildren, David and Sarah. Steven, Stephani and Mark are equally proud of their parents for the example they have set and the values they have

“It means so much to our parents to see Jewish culture and education flourish. BT’s prominent leadership position on a national level in Jewish education is something that instills great pride in our parents,” Stephani and Mark share. “A BT education helps guarantee that these values continue from generation to generation…. l’dor v’dor. We have taken these lessons and taught them to our children.”

For the Renbaums, this is the embodiment of the Talmud’s lesson: “When you teach your children, you also teach your children’s children.”

“We have passed this legacy on to our children, and we have seen in our lifetime, that the beneficiaries also include our grandchildren,” commented Michael. “Nothing is more satisfying or fulfilling to us than knowing that our children and grandchildren embrace these values, and will extend this legacy to future generations.

Rebecca Pristoop is a curator, performance artist, and collaborator committed to working with art through the lens of social justice. She commissions site-responsive artworks, design interventions, and experiential programs for New York City’s social service agencies through her work at Art Connects New York.
