Shabbat at Beth Tfiloh

eth Tfiloh’s weekly Shabbat line-up provides a choice of services with a number of “user-friendly” enhancements. A full complement of children’s and teen services in addition to babysitting make the Modern Orthodox services especially attractive to families with young children. Our halachicallyapproved Tzomet sound system, a mechitza, and increased participation by women are innovations which aim to expand the appeal of this unique house of worship. The BT Minyan service on Shabbat morning and Yomim Tovim provides a

participatory service in a more intimate setting to enable Beth Tfiloh to serve the broadest Rabbi Mitchell Wohlberg Hazzan Avi Albrecht cross-section of Modern Orthodoxy. Inspiring “talk of the town” sermons by our rabbis and the melodic baritone of Hazzan Avi Albrecht, make Beth Tfiloh’s service truly unique on the American Jewish scene.

For Adults SHABBAT MORNING CLASSES

Rabbi Eli Yoggev

Start Shabbat morning off with an indepth class led by Rabbi Chaim Wecker at 8:10 am. Beginning after Sukkot, join Rabbi Eli Yoggev and thousands of Jews worldwide who are studying a page of Talmud every day. The Shabbat Daf Yomi class will meet at 8:30 am.

SHABBAT SERVICES take place weekly at 8:45 am in the Dahan Sanctuary and 9:15 am at the BT Minyan in the Epstein Chapel.

SHABBAT AFTERNOON CLASS Every Shabbat afternoon our rabbis lead a stimulating session of Torah study 50 minutes before Mincha in the Epstein Chapel. Topics range from Jewish thought to the weekly Parshah to Jewish law. The classes are always interactive, lively, and accessible. Texts are available in English, making Rabbi Chai Posner this class perfect for everyone: young and old, men and women, experts and beginners. Mincha and Seudah Shlishit (the third Shabbat meal) follow immediately after the class.

“WHAT’S ON THE RABBI’S MIND?” Several times during the year, meet with our rabbis for a half-hour pre- or post-Kiddush discussion on news, books

and topics of interest. Let’s get together and get to know each other: November 11, and February 24.

COFFEE & COMMENTARY: Conversation for Women Join our BT Coffee Club each Shabbat morning for coffee and a nosh, meet up with friends and go into services together. Coffee Club runs from 10-10:15 am. BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROGRAM The Beth Tfiloh Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program has been developed to prepare students for the responsibilities of Jewish adulthood and provide them and their families with a meaningful and memorable Jewish life-cycle experience. Beth Tfiloh’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah students and their parents meet monthly with Rabbi Wohlberg for family education revolving around synagogue

life, rituals and life cycle events, and topical issues of current interest. Our rabbis meet individually with students to help personalize and enrich a course of learning leading up to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah in conjunction with our excellent Bar/ Bat Mitzvah teachers. Students also participate in a series of hands-on projects that prepare them to take on adult mitzvot in addition to doing their own mitzvah project. Our 2018 Bar Mitzvah students will participate in a Tefillin Program with fathers, grandfathers, and/or another adult who will share this mitzvah with them. Our 2018 Bat Mitzvah girls will join their mothers, grandmothers, or other special women in their lives in a challah baking workshop to learn the beautiful mitzvot associated with challah, Shabbat, and holidays. Bar and Bat Mitzvah dates are assigned to children of Beth Tfiloh members at least two years in advance of the calendar year of their 13th birthday. Dates for 2019 have been assigned to those who have requested them. Dates for 2020 will be completed in the winter of 2018. MERCAZ Fall Semester Four Wednesday Evenings - October 25, November 1, 8, 15

Session 1, 7-8 pm Trump and the Torah: A Jewish Perspective on Contemporary Issues RABBI MITCHELL WOHLBERG In the 2016 presidential election a majority of Israeli Jews favored Donald Trump, while a majority of American Jews voted for Hillary Clinton. This disconnect gives rise to the need to look at how Jewish tradition views some of the issues that have come to the forefront in the present administration. What guidance can we gain from our ancient texts in providing insight into the ideas that now confront the American people and the Jewish community? Topics will include: fake news and alternate facts; refugees and immigration; health care; and Trump, Israel and the Jewish people.

Session 2, 8-9 pm

Choose one exciting elective course: Creative Jewish Men and Women of the 20th Century BARBARA BLUMBERG Did you know that Superman, Batman and Spiderman were all Jewish? Did you know that Hitler was responsible for Judith Lieber, the Jewish woman who became world famous for her bejeweled handbags that have adorned first ladies since Mamie Eisenhower? Were you aware that the Volkswagen, Hitler’s choice for the “people’s car,” was originally designed by a German Jew, and was made popular by one of the first Jewish ad agencies in the U.S.? And finally, did you hear that Barbie and Ken, the famous iconic dolls, were Jewish? Join us and learn how these creative American men and women, with Jewish heritages, came to have an impact that extended beyond the American shores. Barbara Blumberg taught General Studies at Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community Day School for 25 years. She is now an adjunct faculty member at the Community College of Baltimore County, at Osher Life Long Learning Institute at Towson University and at the Renaissance Academy for the Florida Gulf State University.

Kabbalah and the Modern Experience RABBI ELI YOGGEV What does Kabbalah have to say about yoga and meditation? What contributions can Kabbalah make to Western psychology? How can Kabbalah inform our modern discussions on gender? Explore all of these questions and more. Rabbi Yoggev will present Kabbalistic and Hassidic sources in an interactive manner, along with a guided Kabbalistic meditation. If you are curious about the secrets of the Torah, seeking to infuse your modern lifestyle with age-old spiritual insights, or just looking to learn and experience something new and different, this class is for you. Rabbi Eli Yoggev, Associate Rabbi at Beth Tfiloh Congregation, lectures widely on topics in Jewish Thought and Spirituality. He recently submitted his doctoral dissertation in Kabbalah and Hassidism to Bar Ilan University on the worldview of Rabbi Mordechai Leiner, the Izbitser Rebbe.

MERCAZ Dahan Center for Jewish Life & Learning ONGOING JEWISH LEARNING BT in the AM

11:40 am-12:40 pm

Inspire your thinking and creativity through courses rich with ideas and text study touching on every aspect of modern Jewish life. Enrollment is open to Jewish men and women from all backgrounds and learning levels. This premier Jewish learning program consists of three sessions with a choice of outstanding classes.

Israel: Beyond the Blue & White

Choose one class in each time period to attend for the year:

Explore the deep historical connection of the Jewish people with the land of Israel, then delve into the day-to-day Israeli life as reflected through the personal stories of ordinary Israeli citizens. These short stories will be followed by an analysis of new trends, such as the constant rise and fall of political parties.

9:30-10:30 am

A Look into the Underappreciated Books of the Bible CHANA SLAVATICKI Explore part three of the Bible: Ketuvim. Ketuvim just doesn’t seem to get the respect it deserves—it’s neither a legal code like the Chumash, nor visions from our prophets, like Nevi’im. Its books are among the most interesting and significant for understanding the Bible as a whole. From poetry in the Book of Psalms, love in Song of Songs, and wisdom in Proverbs, to commitment in Ruth and Daniel, and deadly farce in Esther, we will explore these timeless themes through our study of the books of Ketuvim.

Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus RABBANIT BRACHA JAFFE In this course we will look at mitzvot (positive commandments) and explore how they apply to men and to women. Are they the same? Are they different? Some examples: Shofar, Sukkah, Megillah, and Kiddush. We will also explore deeper meanings to the mitzvot through spiritual and philosophical lenses. 10:35-11:35 am

Jewish Food in Law and Lore RABBI MITCHELL WOHLBERG / DR. ZIPORA SCHORR Every human being eats… but not everyone eats the same things! For a Jew, the food we eat goes to the heart of our religion (e.g. honey, matzah), to our history (e.g. cholent, horseradish), to our culture (e.g. bagels and lox), to our statehood (e.g. hummus and tahini) and our diversity (e.g. legumes on Pesach). As Jews, we are what we eat!

Conflicting Reports PHIL JACOBS Examine different forms the media takes while covering the very same news event or feature. Participants will be placed in the position of “editor” or “assignment editor” and given actual stories and asked for coverage strategy. Then we will compare their ideas to what actually happened in the coverages of media companies ranging from Ha’aretz and the Times of Israel to the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, CNN, Fox News and others. 8

RABBI CHAI POSNER AND DANIEL STEINER, BT SHALIACH

Current Events PHIL JACOBS Phil Jacobs will teach this current events course in the true spirit of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and the former “That Was the Week That Was” with David Frost. We will cover everything and anything that tops the 24-hour news cycle. October 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13, 20, 27, December 4, 11, 18, January 22, 29, February 5, 12, 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26, April 9, 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, June 4–Preview Session for Next Year

YAFFE SCHOLARS The Seymour Yaffe Scholars Program for Advanced Jewish Learning. Seymour “Siggy” Yaffe, past president of Beth Tfiloh Congregation, was a most beloved and respected member of Beth Tfiloh.

American Law and Jewish Law: Similarities and Differences Rabbi Jonathan Sachs said, “True freedom requires the rule of law and justice and a judicial system in which the rights of some are not secured by the denial of rights to others.” Judaism and the United States of America share a commitment to law as a foundational value: Jews adhere to halacha, given to us by God; Americans to the Constitution, created by the founding fathers of our country. The Divine vs. the human — they share much in common, but the differences are profound in everything ranging from how to live and the right to die. Come explore those laws that unite us and those that divide us, and how we have found common ground in which to operate over time. Special fees apply. Schedule: Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm for dinner (beginning November 29) followed by the Shiur at 7 pm. Enroll in any Ongoing Jewish Learning Program and receive special discounts to many other Mercaz programs and free participation in the Fall Semester classes and Monthly Book Club.
