Son of Cori Rosen and the late Steven Rosen Drew attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the brother of Garett and Skylar Rosen. He is the grandson of Diane Adelman and the late Marshall Adelman, and Gloria Rosen and the late Leonard Rosen. His hobbies include basketball, sports, and being with friends and family. For his Mitzvah Project, Drew is collecting shoes for children who can’t afford them.

Daughter of Elite and Arian Jakob Amit attends Park School and is the sister of Eden and Adee Jakob. She is the granddaughter of Adina and Shmaya Zacharya and Anna and Ernest Zlotak. Her hobbies include dance, arts and crafts, and lacrosse. For her Mitzvah Project, Amit volunteers with Art With a Heart, helping prepare for art classes, working on ongoing projects, and helping with programs as needed.

Adam attends Westland Middle School and Hebrew School at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda. He is the brother of Matthew Cohen and grandson of Lois and Ronald Diener, and Natalie and the late Martin Cohen. His hobbies include playing sports, trumpet, technology, origami, and cooking. For his Mitzvah Project, Adam provided respite by teaching origami to siblings and girls with Rett Syndrome (RTT) at the international family conference and is building a website for a clinic serving the underprivileged in Costa Rica.

Each year at the closing meeting, the Fannie Bank Gurevitch Award honors a member who has given her time, energy, and expertise to Sisterhood’s projects without expectation of acknowledgment. This year the award was given to Sylvia Tulkoff for, among other projects, her on-call service to the Gift Shop and her unwavering organization and running of several Nearly New Sales. Congratulations, Sylvia, and thank you.

We welcome Jeffrey and Bess Gilden and their children, Seth and Shoshi, as new members to the Beth Tfiloh family. Jeffrey is an accountant with Erickson Living. Bess is a social worker with Baltimore City Department of Social Services. Seth is in the 2nd grade and Shoshi is in the 3’s class at Beth Tfiloh. Bess’ parents are our members, Stephen and Terry Needel.

A special service award was presented to Phyllis Neuman for her ongoing support of Sisterhood and her dedicated work as the Recording Secretary of our Board.

In addition, we finally had our showing of the comedy film Dorfman in Love, after two weather delays. It was worth the wait!

Mark your calendar: The Sisterhood will be visiting the newly opened 9-11 Memorial Museum in New York on Sunday, October 19. Watch this space for more information.

BT CARES raises the bar for Tikkun Olam Since the BT Cares Social Action Committee was formed a few years ago, the things we have accomplished have been amazing! From organizing more than 200 volunteers to help with Hurricane Sandy disaster relief and collecting more than 1,500 pairs of gloves for Winter survival kits, to delivering more than 700 Mishloach Manot bags to Jewish nursing homes and hospitals during Purim, Beth Tfiloh has truly made a difference in the lives of so many. We thank the hundreds of BT members and school families who have served as volunteers for these and other causes.

We couldn’t have done it without all of you.

For the upcoming year, BT Cares will focus the majority of its community efforts on joining the FIGHT AGAINST HOMELESSNESS. The idea to focus on one core issue came about following a series of Membership Committee and Synagogue Board meetings, where participants encouraged Social Action to not only make a difference on the surface, but to develop a thematic approach that would enable us to have a more significant impact on a specific cause.

In addition to donating H.E.L.P. lunches to the Hannah More Women and Children’s Shelter, this upcoming year, Beth Tfiloh will run a clothing drive for professional business attire in order to help the women at the shelter become more comfortable and prepared for any interviews and/or professional working environments.

In addition to collecting toiletries and winter items for those in need, Beth Tfiloh’s volunteer efforts will include more hands-on projects at different organizations and facilities, 6

including Helping Up Mission, Moveable Feast, and Baltimore Station.

BT Cares will also be organizing an on-going art fundraiser in which our students, members, and families will be able to create beautiful squares that, after woven together, will help make the stairwells at Healthcare for the Homeless brighter, enticing clients to increase their health and activity levels by using the stairs.

We will implement a new Casserole Program that will help feed men, women, and children in various shelters.

And, we will participate in the 2015 Empty Bowls program, one of Baltimore’s signature events that raises funds to serve those who are hungry and homeless in our community.

BT Cares is striving to do more, help more, and change more people’s lives by joining the fight against homelessness.

All the many BT CARES projects from 2013-14 (see sidebar) will continue throughout the upcoming year, along with the new initiatives mentioned above. There are so many

Morah Elisheva Erlanger was selected from hundreds of Jewish educators across North America as one of six Grinspoon Award for Excellence in Jewish Education winners.

Morah Erlanger receives National Grinspoon Award for Excellence in Jewish Education On the last day of school, representatives of the Center for Jewish Education paid a surprise visit to our Lower School to announce that Second Grade teacher, Morah Elisheva Erlanger had been selected from among hundreds of Jewish educators across North America, to receive the coveted National Grinspoon Award for Excellence in Jewish Education, which recognizes, honors and supports outstanding classroom Jewish educators.

The award includes an honorarium for Morah Erlanger, acknowledgement in local and national publications, grants for professional development opportunities, and stipends for peer to peer trainings. Morah Erlanger had previously been awarded the Center for Jewish Education’s Sam Kahan Distinguished Educator Award.

“Morah Erlanger is one in a million!” says Mrs. Nina Wand, Lower School Principal. “She is a thoughtful and innovative teacher who cares deeply about her students – how and what they learn! She spends time creating materials and lessons that challenge the children to think and that spark their interest and curiosity.”

BT Junior named Big Brothers/Big Sisters’ Champion of Mentoring

By Yitzhak M. ’15 On May 15th, Zachary Azrael ‘15, President of the Beth Tfiloh chapter of the National Honor Society, received the Champion of Mentoring award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake for his work in founding the Tutoring Outreach Program —TOP at their annual MentorZing ceremony.

Other honorees included Senator Barbara A. Mikulski, Governor Martin O’Malley, and Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

TOP partners with the U.S. Dream Academy, an after-school program which focuses on students with incarcerated family members. On school days, BT National Honor Society members travel to Pimlico Elementary/ Middle School to partner with the students and give them personalized attention while tutoring them in subjects like math, English, and science.

While originally imagined as a simple tutoring program, TOP has grown since its inception, and has achieved much in its first year as a program. Recently, Pikesville High School students have volunteered to help Beth Tfiloh and started a drive to collect art supplies for the students at the U.S. Dream Academy. While continuing to expand projects within Pimlico Elementary and

STUDENT CHAMPION OF MENTORING AWARDEE - BT National Honor Society President, Zachary Azrael ‘15 has received local and national recognition for founding the Tutoring Outreach Program, a service project of the BT Chapter of the National Honor Society.

Middle School, TOP is also attempting to expand the program nationally, reaching out to schools in Texas, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, and Florida.

The program has been recognized not only locally, on WBAL and in the Baltimore Jewish Times, but also nationally, by the National Honor Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Chesapeake Region.

In addition to this prestigious award from Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Zach has also won the Local level of the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program for making a positive impact in his community.

Teachers Honored at Closing Faculty Luncheon Mrs. Zipora Schorr, Director of Education, named the following Teachers of the Year at the closing faculty luncheon: Jamie Forman (PreSchool); Michele Shira and Danielle Levin (Lower School; Marc Burkom ‘98 (Athletics Dept.); and Halaine Steinberg (College Guidance, English) Special tributes were also given to retiring teachers, including Mrs. Rae Goldberg, Mrs. Rhona Simon, Mrs. Rachel Glazer, and Mrs. Jean Ginsberg.

Mrs. Schorr gave Rabbi Aaron Frank a fond farewell as he returns to his roots in Riverdale, New York, to join the administration of the SAR Academy.
