As we reflect on the past year at Beth Tfiloh, we do so with tremendous gratitude. This year marked an important chapter in the life of our community. For Ms. Rutner, it was her first year as Head of School, a year filled with new experiences, meaningful milestones, including the successful completion of Beth Tfiloh’s AIMS accreditation review, and countless opportunities to witness the strength, warmth, and spirit of Beth Tfiloh. For Rabbi Posner, it was a year of welcoming a new partner in leadership and continuing the sacred work of guiding our school and synagogue together. Throughout the year, we were continually inspired by our students, families, congregants, clergy, faculty, volunteers, and donors, whose commitment to Beth Tfiloh makes our community so extraordinary. This year’s Annual Campaign theme, My BT Why, invited members of our community to reflect on the experiences, relationships, and values that make Beth Tfiloh such an important part of their lives. As we considered our own BT Whys, we were reminded that while each person’s story is unique, many are rooted in the same enduring themes: a love of Torah and learning, a deep sense of community and belonging, academic excellence, meaningful connections to one another and to Israel, and a commitment to ensuring a vibrant Jewish future for the next generation. Every gift recognized in these pages reflects a BT Why of its own. Behind each act of generosity is a personal connection to our community and a commitment to sustaining the values and experiences that make Beth Tfiloh so special. icture walking into Beth Tfiloh 20 years from now. It’s a different world - one where being openly, proudly Jewish has taken real courage. Imagine the people you meet there: alumni who have grown into artists, engineers, business leaders, teachers, scholars - and most importantly, proud, grounded Jews. What they carry with them is what Beth Tfiloh gave them, in addition to what we built when we saw the world shifting and decided not to shrink back, but instead, we chose to build an Ark strong enough to weather the storm. Beth Tfiloh’s Ark Initiative is simple: we’re asking our community to make BT one of their top three philanthropic priorities. In his 2025 State of World Jewry address, Dan Senor, co-author of The Genius of Israel and Start-Up Nation, said something that stuck with us: we may not be able to stop the tsunami, but we can build an Ark, one strong enough to survive the storm and help us rebuild something better on the other side. BT is already something special - a premier Jewish day school, a vibrant Modern Orthodox synagogue, and a warm and inclusive community, all with a deep connection to Israel. But in a time like this, holding steady isn’t enough. To face challenges like this, we need to grow, deepen our Jewish learning and spirit, invest in our faculty, and energize our shul and help it continue to thrive. What we give our children - and their children - needs to have structure and the ability to endure. Judaism is joyful, magnetic, and deeply rooted, with a profound history. With bold investment we can create that kind of future, renewing what it means to be proudly Jewish, and steering it towards something enduring. Without it, we risk our Jewish families turning inward, students may feel isolated, and the next generation may lack the tools, the pride, or the will to carry Jewish identity forward.

Mekarev Shachen, Mekarev Shechinah Closer to Your Neighbor, closer to G-d’s presence Our Dahan Sanctuary is the spiritual heart of our community, the place where we gather for prayer, celebrate life’s milestones, and draw strength from one another. As our congregation continues to grow and evolve, so too must the space that brings us together. the sounds of music, conversation, and plenty of laughter as women and girls from across the region gathered for a Challah Bake and Dance Party with Anat Ishai, known to many as “The Challah Mom.” Between braiding dough and dancing together, participants heard stories from Anat’s life in Israel and the experiences that shaped her journey. By the end of the evening, new friendships had formed, old ones had been strengthened, and every table seemed to have a story of its own.

BTRP • The topics changed from month to month - Torah

and physics, Jewish advocacy, Baltimore history, rising energy costs - but the appeal of BTRP (Beth Tfiloh Retired Persons) remained much the same. Participants came together to learn something new, spend time with friends, and take part in the kind of conversations that make people look forward to next month’s gathering.

MOMS & MIDRASH • In the midst of carpools, bedtime

routines, and busy family schedules, a group of BT mothers carved out time each month to learn together. Gathering in one another’s homes through Moms & Midrash, participants explored the lives of remarkable women from the Talmud and the questions their stories still raise today. The learning sparked thoughtful conversation, new perspectives, and friendships that grew alongside a shared commitment to Jewish learning.

Gina Zahler Congregant, Parent of Alumnus My BT Why began in the Lower School lunch line, where I volunteered simply to see my son, Aaron, and be part of his day. Along the way, I discovered a community of people devoted to strengthening Beth Tfiloh, and my reason for getting involved grew into something much bigger than myself. Today, my BT Why is helping ensure that future generations of Jewish children can benefit from the same education, opportunities, and community that meant so much to our family.

AUBURN EXPERIENCE • What began with Coach

Bruce Pearl’s connection to Israel has grown into The Auburn Experience – a training camp of sorts that brings Jewish and Christian student athletes together through basketball, learning, and community. During their visit to Auburn University, BT students trained alongside coaches, explored collegiate athletics, and heard firsthand from Coach Pearl about the Jewish values and experiences that have shaped his life and career.

SHREK JR. • The kingdom of Duloc came to life this

spring as middle school students took the stage for Shrek JR. While audiences enjoyed the performances, the production reflected the work of students both onstage and behind the scenes. From costumes and sets to lighting, sound, and stage management, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders worked together to transform months of preparation into a memorable production in the Mintzes Theatre.

FEATURED CLUB – HOSA • Nearly 40 students

gathered to learn more about careers in medicine through a program hosted by Maryland HOSA (Future Health Professionals). Organized by student leader Marlow M. ‘27, the event featured Dr. Adam Silverman, who shared insights from his career and introduced students to the specialized field of wound care. The thoughtful questions that followed reflected a growing interest among BT students in healthcare and the many paths available within it.

ROBOTICS • After months of designing, testing, and refining their robots, our middle school robotics team traveled to New York City to compete in the CIJE’s (Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education) VEX Robotics Tournament. Alongside students from Jewish schools across the country, team members put their designs - and their problem-solving skills to the test in a fast-paced competition.

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS • For months, fourth graders spent their afternoons reading, discussing, and preparing for Battle of the Books with Mrs. Jamie Karbeling, lower school librarian. Along the way, they explored ten novels and the characters, themes, and lessons within them. A team of students went on to represent BT at the Baltimore County Public Library’s inter-school competition, where they demonstrated not only their knowledge of the books, but also the sportsmanship, derech eretz (respect), and perseverance that define our school community.

FINANCIAL LITERACY • The Mintzes Theatre took on

the feel of a startup pitch room as eleventh graders presented original business ideas during this year’s Shark Tank event. After months of research, planning, and collaboration, student teams pitched solutions to real-world problems before a panel of judges, fielding questions and defending their ideas along the way. The event offered students an opportunity to apply what they had learned in Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship while developing skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

AKIVA PROGRAM • No two children learn in exactly

the same way. The AKIVA Program was built around that understanding, providing students with language-based learning differences the support they need while remaining active members of the broader school community. Through personalized instruction, small-group learning, and close collaboration among educators, students build skills, confidence, and independence in an environment designed to meet them where they are and help them continue moving forward.

PRESCHOOL CLASSROOM DISCOVERY • When

Morah Lindsey discovered a robin’s nest outside her home, she shared daily updates with students in the Hummingbirds Preschool Threes class. Together, Morah Lindsey and Morah Shelley used the experience as a springboard for exploration, as students examined nests, read informational books, created their own nests, and sketched what they observed.

COLLEGE GUIDANCE • College guidance at Beth Tfiloh

begins long before senior year. As part of the school’s four-year approach, students and families are introduced to the college process through a series of programs designed to inform, prepare, and demystify what can often feel overwhelming. Working alongside admissions representatives from colleges and universities across the country, participants reviewed mock applications, debated decisions, and quickly learned that there is far more to the process than grades and test scores.

CHIDON HATANACH • Twelve Beth Tfiloh students

represented the school at the national finals of Chidon HaTanach USA, continuing a tradition of excellence in Tanach study. Among the highlights were standout performances by Moshe L. ‘28, who earned first place in the high school division, and Tamar L. ‘31, who placed sixth in the middle school division. This year marked fifteen consecutive years of BT student participation in the national finals.

ETHICS OF THE SOUL • Week after week, community

members gathered to study Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers) with Rabbi Dr. Eli Yoggev, using his book, Ethics of the Soul, as a springboard for discussion. Originally written during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic, the book grew out of a desire to remain connected through Jewish learning and reflection. Years later, those same teachings continued to bring people together to explore timeless questions about character, relationships, and how to live a thoughtful Jewish life.

JEWISH HERITAGE NIGHT • Baseball, Jewish pride, and hometown spirit came together at Jewish Heritage Night at Camden Yards. Beth Tfiloh families, students, alumni, and friends joined community members from across the region for an evening celebrating Jewish life while cheering on the Orioles. The night included a special moment for BT’s varsity baseball team, which was recognized on the field following its MIAA C-Conference Championship season.

ISRAEL PRIDE

ISRAEL PARADE IN NYC • Marching alongside the

Maccabiah delegation, a bus load of BT congregants joined Jewish organizations, schools, synagogues, and supporters from across the country at New York City’s annual Israel Parade. Israeli flags lined Fifth Avenue, music filled the streets, and crowds stretched for blocks as thousands gathered to celebrate and support Israel.

OCTOBER 7 REMEMBRANCE PROJECT • Yom

HaZikaron brought middle and high school students together to remember Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror while reflecting on the personal stories behind national remembrance. The observance concluded with the dedication of a living memorial honoring the victims of October 7 - a cherry tree surrounded by stones bearing the names of Israeli civilians and soldiers who lost their lives. Conceived and led by Dr. Shachar Cohen, the project invited students and faculty to learn about individual victims and inscribe their names on the stones, connecting personal stories to a memorial that will remain part of campus life for years to come.

year’s Helene and Stanley Z. Penn Lecture welcomed acclaimed author, journalist, and political commentator Douglas Murray and Gadi Moses, a survivor of the October 7 attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz. Moderated by Rabbi Chai Posner, the discussion combined Murray’s analysis with Moses’s firsthand account of loss, survival, and rebuilding in the aftermath of October 7. A portion of the evening’s proceeds benefited American Friends of Nir Oz, supporting ongoing recovery efforts within the community.

DAHAN LECTURE • When Jon Polin and Rachel

Goldberg-Polin, parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin z”l, visited Beth Tfiloh for this year’s Dahan Lecture, more than 1,600 people from across Baltimore’s Jewish community came together to hear their story. In a thoughtful conversation moderated by Rabbi Chai Posner, they reflected on Hersh’s life, the challenges of grief, and the enduring impact of memory. The evening served as a powerful reminder of Beth Tfiloh’s role as a gathering place for meaningful community conversations and nationally recognized speakers.

BT CAMPS • For many in the Jewish community, some of their strongest childhood memories are rooted in summer camp.The 2025 season carried that tradition forward for a new generation of BT campers and the 2026 season is now underway. Children spend their days swimming, boating, creating, playing sports, exploring nature, and trying new things. MITZVAHPALOOZA • Families of all ages gathered for

Mitzvahpalooza, a celebration of chesed benefiting Yad B’Yad, our community support fund. Through hands-on service projects and activities, participants learned more about a fund that provided more than 80 grants to BT families, faculty, and staff facing unexpected challenges during the previous year. The event offered a reminder that caring for one another begins close to home.

CHESED COMMITTEE • For more than two years,

congregation volunteers have shown up regularly at Paul’s Place, a South Baltimore nonprofit that provides meals, support services, and resources for individuals and families facing economic hardship, serving meals and supporting individuals and families in need. Alongside those efforts, community members gathered on our campus to prepare sandwiches, assemble lunches, and contribute to seasonal donation drives.

LOWER SCHOOL CHESED • As part of their

Wonder unit, fourth graders met individuals who shared their experiences living with a wide range of disabilities. One of those visits featured Ms. Erin Richmond and her son, Macon, who both have Treacher Collins syndrome. Students came prepared with questions, but what stood out most was how quickly conversations shifted from differences to common interests - sports, music, animals, and hobbies.

DR. YONI SCHWAB • Few parenting challenges have

evolved as quickly as technology. This spring, Dr. Yoni Schwab joined BT families for a conversation about helping children navigate a world shaped by smartphones, social media, and constant connectivity. The discussion explored how families can approach technology thoughtfully and create healthy boundaries and habits that help children thrive both online and off.

POP-UP BEIT MIDRASH • This year marked the launch of BT’s Pop-Up Beit Midrash, a new adult learning initiative built around dinner, conversation, and Jewish learning. Held throughout the year around key moments on the Jewish calendar, each series brought participants together with BT rabbis and educators to explore topics ranging from the High Holidays to the meaning behind everyday brachot.

PA LUNCH & LEARN SERIES • Parents are talking

about technology, executive functioning, relationships, and how to navigate raising children in an increasingly complicated world. This year, the Parent Association created a space for those conversations through its new Lunch & Learn series. Whether joining from campus, the office, or home, parents gathered in our Ivdu Program Center to hear from expert speakers, connect with one another, and explore topics that were practical, timely, and relevant to family life.
