By Mr. Stevens Mrs. Wien and I recently conducted a series of editor interviews for the upcoming year of BT World. My Interview with the St.Mary’s Group By: Isabella A. ‘21 Fifth grade students received a visit last week from several people from the sixteenth century. Our visitors came in period dress and talked to us about life in the colonies. I had the opportunity to talk to them “in character.” Here is our interview: BTW : What are your names?

St. Mary’s: Isabelle Jones, the indentured servant, and Master Gadiah Spray, the master.

BTW: What are your backgrounds?

St. Mary’s: (Isabelle) I was born and lived in England where my family died of an illness. I was a waitress in a pub. (Master Gadiah Spray) I married Mistress Rebecca Spray and had three lovely children with her and together we all came to Maryland in 1652.

BTW: Isabelle, is Master Gadiah Spray a good master? And how long have you been working for him?

St. Mary’s: Most of the time he is a very kind and generous master for whom I have been working for three years now.

BTW: Where does everyone sleep/live?

St. Mary’s: The slaves all live on the top where it is a little bit colder and less space. The master and mistress and their children sleep down stairs where it is bigger and warmer.

BTW: What do you do in your free time (when you are not working hard?)

St. Mary’s: Well, we still have games as you do now such as chess, checkers, and master has some books including the bible if we are not working and we want to read something.

BTW: What do you enjoy the most about making the presentations?

St. Mary’s: We love telling/teaching people about the past and showing them that they weren’t that different from how we are today.

BTW: What did you make your clothes out of?

St. Mary’s: Mostly cloth and wool but the very wealthy people can afford silk too.

BT Middle School Band Concert

By Justin L. ‘21 On a bitter cold Wednesday night, people came to Beth T iloh to see a band and chorus concert. Before the concert started, the band practiced in the band room. Mr. Kirk said, “Good luck,” as the ifth grade band went on the stage. They played three songs and some of the members even had solos.

The sixth, seventh and eighth grade band took the stage. They played three songs. One of the songs was called “Ten Masters in Two Minutes.” They even showed a slide show to go along with it.

After the bands were inished, the choir sang songs for the audience. The audience loved the show and the band and chorus members were very proud of themselves.

STANDING BY, STANDING UP AN INTERVIEW WITH MR. TIM COLLINS By: Alma M. ‘21 and Sydney K. ‘21 Mr. Tim Collins recently paid a visit to the Middle School and presented a program called “Standing By, Standing Up.” The program was a one man show. It was about various aspects of bullying. We were able to interview Mr. Collins before the program. Here is the interview: BTW: What is your background?

Mr. Collins: I’ve been an actor for a couple of years and I’ve been touring in one man shows.

I studied theater in London, England and New England.

BTW: Why do you teach this ?

Mr. Collins: Because I want to encourage students to treat each other with kindness and respect.

BTW: What is your favorite memory of teaching this seminar?

Mr. Collins: I preform this show all across the country for thousands of kids and each show is very special.

BTW: Were you ever bullied in school? What happened and how did you handle it?

Mr. Collins: Yes, I was bullied in 5th grade by some older kids and when I was in school no one was talking about bullying. At that time kids just had to “tough it out” and kids who are in school today have more access to information about bullying.

Behind the scenes with Seussical: An interview with Alana G. ‘18 By: Shayna L. ‘21 and Alana G. ‘21 As you know, students from the Middle School are currently rehearsing for an upcoming production of “Seussical”, a musical production based on the characters created by the famous Dr. Seuss. I recently had the opportunity to interview Alana G. ’18, one of the cast members. Here is the interview: BTW: What made you decide to try out for Seussical?

Alana G.: I have been doing plays for as long as I can remember and I love doing musical theatre.

BTW: Are you happy with the role you got?

Alana G.: I am thrilled with the part I received.

BTW: What part did you get?

Alana G.: I received the part of Gertrude McFuzz.

BTW: What do you like most about Gertrude?

Alana G.: I like how she is shy.

BTW: What do you like most about Seussical?

Alana G.: It is a fun and upbeat show.

Seussical should be a treat for students, faculty, family, and friends of BT. We will have future columns describing other aspects of the play. This concludes this article of Behind The Scenes.

BTW: if you could give only one sentence of advice to middle school students what would it be?

Mr. Collins: Take care of each other (A line from the play).

BTW: What inspired you to do this show?

Mr. Collins: I saw a lot of bullying in school and I wanted to show kids how serious the issue could be and I think theater is a great way to talk about important issues.

BTW: Why do you think people bully?

Mr. Collins: There are a lot of reasons that people might bully each other, but the truth is that bullying hurts people and because of that people should work together to prevent bullying.

BTW: What kind of bullying do you think is the most hurtful?

Mr. Collins: I think all bullying is hurtful.

We would both like to thank Mr. Collins for taking the time to let us interview him. It was a great program and we all learned a lot!

Shipwrecked!

It wasn’t much of an island. There was beach all around the perimeter of the island and going into the center of the island

By Shoshana Z. ‘20 was a forest. We pulled the row boat onto the island and then Part four flopped onto the sand. We stayed there for a few minutes. Then…

“Oh no!” said Rachael.

“THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, STEVE!!!” yelled Leora.

“I know,” said Steve, “Pinky got wet!”

“YEAH!” agreed Elizabeth, “AND MOM SCHED“SO THAT OVERSIZED BIRD GOT US THROWN ULED A MANI-PETTY AFTER WE VISITED THE POOL!” INTO THE WATER, AND YOUR MAIN CONCERN IS THAT “IT ISN’T MY FAULT!” yelled Steve.

IT GOT WET????????????” shouted Leora.

“Guys,” said Daniel, “we’ve got bigger problems.” He pointed at the cruise ship, which was sailing away.

“Oh no!” shouted Tia, “The ship!”

We all paddled with our hands. Then we found some oars, and Daniel and Aidan started paddling. But it was no use.

Soon the ship was out of sight.

“What are we going to do?” asked Audrey.

We all looked at Rose, who always had a plan. “I…” she hesitated, “I don’t know.”

There was a dead silence, and few bothered to break it.

Sam tried a few times to crack a joke, but no one laughed. We just floated.

“What did the ocean do to the other ocean?” asked Sam, trying again to break the silence.

“An island!!!” shouted Sarah. “Nope,” said Sam. “The answer is… it waved!!!!”

“No!!!!” shouted Sarah. “I see an island!!! Over there!”

We looked in the direction she was pointing and sure enough, there was an island. We were all cheering and Micah was shouting, “Land ho! Land ho!” Daniel and Aidan paddled faster, and we helped by paddling with our hands. Dug used his paws, while Pinky didn’t help at all. I was beginning to wonder how Dug was helping paddle the boat. He is very smart, but I don’t think he is that smart. Maybe it was instinct. Maybe he saw us doing it and he thought he was supposed to. But within an hour, we made it to the island.

New Middle School Magazine!

By Mr. Stevens Rabbi Oratz and I recently discussed developing a new Middle School magazine devoted to creative writers.

The new magazine will be used to publish creative writing such as fantasy and science fiction stories as well as poetry and other forms of material written by Middle School students. Hailey G. ’19, Shoshana Z. ’20, and Isabella A. ’21 have been working as a committee on this project. They will soon be making an announcement and inviting students to participate.

“OH, YES IT IS!” said Leora with a wild look in her eyes, “YOU WEREN’T KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR STUPID CHICKEN!” “PINKY’S NOT A CHICKEN!” said Steve.

“Why are you defending it!?” said Emily. “Speaking of chicken, what are we going to eat here?”There was a dead silence.

Then out of nowhere…

“I just remembered!” said Rachael, “I brought snacks!”

“Are you serious?” asked Rose.

“Yes!!!” said Rachael, “and also some dog biscuits for Dug! I figured that Pinky would probably keep us occupied for a long time, so we might get hungry.”

“You are amazing, Rachael!” said Sarah. Everyone shouted their agreement. Rachael blushed a little.

“I will get the snacks,” said Tia. She went toward the boat and rummaged around a little.

Then we heard a yelp and a squawk. Then Tia came back, but not with snacks. She was holding Pinky by the scruff of his neck.

“Pinky ate all the snacks!” she said.

“WHAT??” we all shouted. We all turned around and looked at Steve, who looked like he was about to run in the opposite direction.

“THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT!” said Elizabeth.

“IT IS NOT!” shouted Steve.

“It is too!” said a voice. We all stopped what we were doing.

“Hello?” said Rose.

“Who said that?” said the voice again. Sam’s jaw dropped.

“What is it now, Sam?” said Leora. He said nothing.

“Sam?” said Sarah.

“Do you know something?” asked Aidan.

Slowly, he raised his hand and pointed at... Dug. To Be Continued……..
