THE BETH TFILOH ALUMNI NEWSLETTER
1
A lot has changed since your time at Beth Tfiloh. For many of us, life has taken unexpected turns - new careers, new homes, new families, and new chapters we couldn’t have imagined back then. What connects us is what hasn’t changed. Regardless of when you graduated, we share a foundation shaped by the values we lived every day at BT - Derech Eretz - leading with respect and kindness, B’Tzelem Elokim - honoring the dignity of every individual, Kehillah - building and sustaining community, and Ani Yehudi - carrying our Jewish identity with pride. The values we learned at BT continue to guide us throughout our lives in impactful, meaningful ways. BT was more than just our school. It was where relationships were built, where we learned how to show up for one another, and where many of us first felt what it meant to truly belong. Our education, our community, and the sense of responsibility we gained here have remained with us long after graduation. This alumni newsletter is simply another way to stay connected - to BT, to each other, and to the shared experience that continues to link us. We hope you’ll enjoy catching up on some of the people, stories, and happenings from our community. – Harper Goldberg ’21 Development Associate
Avi Benus ’94, Chairman of the Board, Beth Tfiloh Congregation To my fellow alumni: What makes BT what it is? The values, the education, the community, the love of Judaism. It’s hard to point out just one thing. What makes Beth Tfiloh so special to me is how all of these attributes come together and show up across the entire BT community: the school, the camp, and the shul. At the shul, we strive to continuously live these principles and aspire to expand upon them through focused enhancements of our davening and programming opportunities. On the davening front, we are undertaking a massive renovation to the shul itself, the Dahan Sanctuary. After the High Holidays this year, enhancements to the seating, lighting, and the overall aesthetics will make the shul an even more warm and inviting place while staying true to the magnificence of the overall architecture. On the programming front, we recently hosted dynamic, fantastic speakers such as Douglas Murray via our Penn Lecture series, and we are so excited to welcome Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jon Polin – Hersh’s parents – on the evening of March 16, 2026, for our Dahan Lecture series as our featured speakers. Rachel and Jon have lived through something so life-altering that it fractured their world into “before” and “after,” yet they emerged as tireless advocates for all individuals held captive in Gaza, whether speaking at the United Nations, the United States Congress, or meeting with world leaders. We invite you to be a part of this special evening as we sit with Rachel and Jon and listen as their wisdom and stories unfold in their own voices, and how their Jewish values and faith have guided every step. For tickets visit BethTfiloh.com/Dahan-lecture. I invite our alumni to step back into the shul, whether for Shabbat or holiday services, and experience firsthand the sense of connection and meaning that continue to define Beth Tfiloh. Whether you’re returning after many years or are already a familiar face, your presence helps sustain the values, warmth, and community that make BT so special. Thank you kindly, Avi Benus ’94 Chairman, Beth Tfiloh Congregation

CELEBRATING ALUMNI HONOREES Two members of our BT community were recognized for their athletics and creative arts accomplishments at Beth Tfiloh’s Thanksgiving all-school convocation. Kol Hakavod to Coach John Grap who was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame, and Aaron Frazer ’09 who was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.
Athletic Hall of Fame Award: Coach John Grap
Equally meaningful was Coach Grap’s deep respect for Beth Tfiloh’s Jewish mission. He embraced our school’s values and modeled integrity, humility, and care for community in all that he did.
The Athletic Hall of Fame honors Beth Tfiloh alumni who made a lasting impact as athletes during their time at BT. This year’s inductee is unique: former girls’ basketball and girls’ softball coach, Coach John Grap. From 1990 to 1997, Coach Grap played a pivotal role in putting BT athletics on the map, especially by expanding opportunities for girls at a formative moment in the school’s history.
John Grap was more than a coach. He was a mentor who believed deeply in his players and helped shape their confidence long after they graduated from BT. His induction into the Beth Tfiloh Athletic Hall of Fame honors a legacy defined by dedication, equality, and an enduring belief in students.
When Coach Grap joined Beth Tfiloh in 1990 as the girls’ varsity basketball coach, girls’ sports were still finding their footing, while many players had never been part of an organized team. With patience, energy, and unwavering belief in his athletes, he built programs grounded in confidence, teamwork, and opportunity. From the beginning, Coach Grap made it clear that his players deserved the same respect, expectations, and support as any team at BT. Coach Grap invested fully in his athletes, staying late for practices, creating team traditions, tracking statistics, scouting opponents, and teaching resilience through wins and losses. His advocacy went well beyond the gym. He brought BT into interscholastic league play, pushed for the inclusion of girls’ teams in the Weiner Tournament, and led the first BT girls’ basketball trip out of state.
Ellie Goldenberg ’12 z”l Theater Hall of Fame Award: Aaron Frazer ’09 The Ellie Goldenberg ’12 z”l Theater Hall of Fame Award honors Ellie’s memory by recognizing a Beth Tfiloh alum whose work reflects excellence in theater and the performing arts. This year, we are proud to present the award to Aaron Frazer ’09. Aaron’s career is rooted in a genuine love of performance, storytelling, and artistic expression that began during his time at Beth Tfiloh through theater and music. Known for his dynamic stage presence and powerful vocals, he is now widely recognized as a founding member, drummer, and co-lead vocalist of the acclaimed soul and R&B band, Durand Jones & The Indications, and celebrated as a solo artist whose work showcases his range and versatility. Whether performing on stage in a theatrical setting or in live musical venues around the world, Aaron brings emotion, creativity, and connection to every audience he engages. We are honored to celebrate his achievements and recognize the meaningful contributions he continues to make to the performing arts.
A special reunion at BT as Coach Grap was celebrated by former players, many returning to campus for the first time in years, making this ceremony all the more meaningful. From left to right: Vered Taylor ’95, Dodi Samuel ’98, Mara Maxfield ’97, Devora Teichman ’93, Jennifer Newfeld ’94, Coach John Grap, Catherine Brown ’92, Rachel Kogul ’95, Lily Black ’97, Rachel Katz ’96, Marlene Hollander ’97.

WELCOME BACK! ALUMNI BASKETBALL GAMES BT’s boys and girls varsity basketball teams faced off against our alumni in two spirited, high-energy games that brought together players from across generations. The matchups were full of friendly competition, school pride, and plenty of memorable moments on the court. Encompassing more than just great basketball play, the games offered a chance for alumni to reconnect with current students and for our varsity teams to feel the strength of the BT community long after graduation. Thank you to all the alumni and student athletes who made these games such a fun and meaningful tradition.
ALUMNI BRUNCH On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, our senior class came together with alumni and faculty for a Thanksgiving-themed brunch - a chance to catch up and reconnect with peers and to spend time with teachers who were instrumental in their lives. Thank you to the Taylor family for their annual sponsorship of this cherished tradition.

MILESTONE REUNIONS FOR THE CLASSES OF 2005, 2010, AND 2020 This Thanksgiving season, we had the joy of celebrating milestone reunions for the BT Classes of 2005 and 2020, marking their 20-year and 5-year reunions. In an exciting first, we also hosted a milestone reunion outside of Baltimore, bringing together the Class of 2010 together in New York City for their 15-year celebration. The evenings were made even more special by surprise visits from our new Head of School, Ms. Bracha Rutner, Rabbi Dr. Yehuda Oratz, Dr. Shachar Cohen, and Mrs. Maytal Schneyer. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated reunion chairs Daniel Aronhime ’05, Aviva Vogelstein ’05, Seth Koretzky ’05, Jordana Kassimir ’10, and Julia Shpigel ’20 - and to all our alumni whose enthusiasm and turnout made these celebrations so incredible.
BT TORAH IN COLLEGE PARK Rabbi Aryeh Richter recently spent an evening with BT alumni studying at the University of Maryland in College Park, continuing a cherished tradition of connection, learning, and shared memories. Over dinner, alumni reconnected, shared their favorite BT stories, and reflected on everything from Shabbatomin and Shavuatomin to senior pranks and unforgettable school trips. Rabbi Richter also shared a timely Torah message rooted in Parshat Vayishlach, exploring Yaakov’s struggles and the courage it takes to remain grounded in one’s values and identity. Drawing on the teachings of the Sfat Emet, he spoke about self-awareness, accountability, and perseverance in the face of challenge. Shared during the seasons of Rosh Hashanah and Chanukah, his words served as a meaningful reminder that BT is a family that extends well beyond the K–12 years. We are deeply grateful to Rabbi Furman for his years of dedication to this program, and thankful to Rabbi Richter for continuing to nurture these meaningful alumni connections.

ALUMNI CAMPAIGN Thank you to the more than 200 BT alumni who have already contributed to this year’s Annual Campaign, and to the extraordinary generosity of Mr. Jeffrey Amdur z”l, whose matching gift doubled the impact of every donation made during our Week of Giving.
Your support reflects belief in our current students, appreciation for the education you received, and confidence in the future of Beth Tfiloh. We are deeply proud of the way our alumni continue to champion educational excellence, core Jewish values, and the next generation of Jewish leaders and changemakers.
Dan Senor, author and host of the Call Me Back podcast, recently noted that “[Jewish] Day school alumni are more than twice as likely to feel deeply connected to their Jewish identity compared with their peers. They’re four times as likely to feel a strong connection to Israel. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks once said: ’To defend a country, you need an army. But to defend an identity, you need a school.’”
To make a gift, donate via Venmo: @BethTfilohSchool, or visit bethtfiloh.com/annualcampaign.
BT ALUMNI BACK IN THE BUILDING Beth Tfiloh’s College Guidance program recently welcomed back a fantastic group of alumni for Pearls of Wisdom from Our BT Alumni, giving our 11th and 12th grade students a front row seat to real college insights. Nine BT alumni, all currently in college, returned to campus to share their experiences and advice with our upperclassmen. The alumni spoke candidly about the college application process, how they chose where to apply and ultimately commit, and what life on campus has been like so far. Students gained firsthand perspectives from graduates who were recently in their shoes, making the guidance both practical and relatable. The program highlighted the strength of the BT alumni network and offered meaningful support as our juniors and seniors navigate their own college journeys.

ALUMNI COUNCIL RELAUNCH We’re excited to share the revival of the BT Alumni Council, an important step in strengthening the connection between alumni and Beth Tfiloh. This December, the council held its first meeting, bringing together a passionate group of alumni eager to support engagement, community, and future programming. We’re looking forward to the ideas, energy, and leadership this council will bring as we continue building meaningful ways for alumni to stay connected to BT. Interested in getting involved? SCHOOL OF THOUGHT Dear BT Community, As we begin this new stretch of the year together, I want to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Bracha Rutner, and I’m grateful to be a part of the BT community. I grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, attended Berman Hebrew Academy, and my journey in Jewish education has taken me through classrooms and leadership roles at several schools I’ve loved deeply. I’m also a mom of four, which means I experience school life as an educator and also as a parent living these years in real time. Before coming to BT, I served as Head of School at Yeshiva University High School for Girls (YUHSG) and taught at Yeshiva of Flatbush. Those experiences reinforced what I believe most strongly – the heart of a great school is great teaching and deep relationships. I’m passionate about student-centered learning, meaningful Torah learning, and building a culture where every child is known, supported, and challenged – academically, socially and spiritually. Our connection to Am Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael is also central to that work. I came to BT because I was drawn to its big tent philosophy and the opportunity to walk alongside students and their family through so many formative years. From the start, I have genuinely felt embraced by this community. In my leadership, I strive to be collaborative and to empower others, because schools are strongest when talented people feel trusted and when we learn from one another. My focus is on excellent teaching, a culture of belonging, and clear expectations that help students grow academically, socially, and spiritually. In the months ahead, I look forward to sharing what we are celebrating, what we are working on, and how we can keep strengthening BT together. Thank you for the warmth with which you have welcomed me. I feel fortunate to work with an extraordinary team, educated faculty, and remarkable students, and I look forward to getting to know you all. Warm regards, Ms. Bracha Rutner Head of School
37th Annual Weiner Family Basketball Tournament The 37th Annual Weiner Family Basketball Tournament brought BT to life with energy, ruach, and a true sense of community over four unforgettable days. From tip-off to the final buzzer, all three gyms buzzed as students, families, alumni, and fans came together for a BT tradition that continues to connect generations. Our varsity teams competed with heart and determination, with a standout moment as the BT girls’ varsity team earned second place in the championship game before a packed Hurwitz Gym. Their teamwork, leadership, and grit truly embodied the very best of Beth Tfiloh. We’re so grateful to the Weiner family for keeping this beloved tradition going, and to our host families for helping make it a memorable experience for everyone involved.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT Olivia Mauer ’15 Olivia Mauer ’15 is a great example of how a Beth Tfiloh education continues to shape alumni long after graduation. After BT, Olivia attended the College of Charleston, building on the skills and confidence she developed during her years here. Today, she is Vice President of Digital Marketing at AltaVista Strategic Partners, leading teams and helping clients grow their businesses. She finds her work especially rewarding because it allows her to support people who are eager to learn and push themselves, while seeing the real impact her team’s work has on their clients’ success. The values Olivia gained through her Jewish education remain central to how she approaches leadership, relationships, and decision-making. Community, responsibility, and continuous learning guide her work every day. Looking back, Olivia credits her years at BT- from early childhood through high school giving her a foundation that still shapes her career. She learned the importance of critical thinking, leadership, and staying connected to her Jewish roots - lessons that continue to inform how she leads, grows, and gives back.

ALUMNI IN DC MEETUP On the fourth night of Chanukah, BT alumni came together in Washington, DC for a joyful reunion. The evening was extra special as our new Head of School, Ms. Bracha Rutner, joined the celebration, connecting with this vibrant and diverse group. Surrounded by Chanukah spirit, lively conversation, and plenty of sushi and desserts, everyone enjoyed reconnecting and celebrating their shared BT experience.
BT Leadership Visits Alumni in Israel In January, Head of School Ms. Bracha Rutner and High School Principal Rabbi Mordechai Soskil traveled to Israel to spend time with BT alumni currently participating in gap year programs. Over four days, they visited 15 different institutions, meeting with school leadership to learn how BT’s curriculum is supporting students as they continue their learning beyond high school and to advocate for our graduates as they navigate the gap year experience. At each stop, they also had the opportunity to connect oneon-one with our alums, checking in on how they’re doing and celebrating the many paths they’re on. Students represented a wide range of programs, including Mechinot - Bar Ilan University’s XP program, yeshivot, and seminaries, reflecting the diversity of experiences our graduates pursue after graduation. One especially meaningful moment was a dinner at Harvey’s Smokehouse in Jerusalem, where 15 alumni from the Class of 2025 gathered to reconnect. Though they are spread across Israel and engaged in different journeys, the evening was filled with conversation, warmth, and a shared sense of belonging - a reminder that no matter where life takes them, they remain part of the BT family.

BT ALUMNI IN ISRAEL INITIATIVE LAUNCHES Beth Tfiloh is excited to launch a new initiative to support and connect BT alumni living in Israel, with an immediate focus on graduates who are currently serving, have served, or are preparing to serve in the IDF, as well as their families in Baltimore. This effort reflects BT’s ongoing commitment to Israel and to caring for our alumni long after graduation. The initiative offers mental health resources, emotional support, and community connections during what can be a challenging time, while also creating opportunities for alumni in Israel to come together through meaningful, fun, and restorative experiences. This work has been made possible through the leadership of Scott Gross ’07, whose vision and dedication helped lay the foundation for this growing network. Alumni including Ephy Shapiro ’08 and Arky Staiman ’09 have contributed engaging experiences in Israel, while BT parent Dr. Madeline Marks is providing her professional expertise to support IDF families with mental health resources. Alumni interested in getting involved or supporting this initiative can reach out to Harper Goldberg ’21 at hgoldberg@btfiloh.org.
