Memories from a joyous Simchat Torah This year's Simchat Torah was a most memorable one, filled with much ruach and meaningful participation by men, women and children alike. Erev Simchat Torah featured festive hakafot, and a delicious meal followed by more singing and dancing with the Torahs. The following morning, a beautiful Hallel was led by Rabbi Yanky Schorr and members of Kol Fusion, followed by another round of hakafot, with spirited dancing and singing for both men and women. One of the highlights was seeing our Holocaust Torah in the middle of the dancing with survivor, Morris Rosen holding it and dancing. Morris also proudly shared a photo of himself and Eli Weisel (pictured above) during the singing of Am Yisrael Chai. After hakafot, Torah readings took place with group alliyot in the Sanctuary, and individual alliyot for the Chapel (with several satellite leyning areas). A women's Torah reading attracted a large crowd, with participation by women as Torah readers, gabbaiot, and with individual alliyot. Special thanks to our Gabbaiot, Teri Gitlitz, Nannette Herlands, and Rachel Herlands, and to our women Torah readers, Rivkah Bresler, Rachel Herlands, Amy Rotenberg, Jill Green, Estelle Posner, Shelley Kaye, Nannette Herlands, and Nonny Kelly. The final and first alliyot of the Torah, referred to as Chatan Torah and Chatan Bereishit, served as an opportunity to honor members who have played a special role in the religious life of our congregation. In the Sanctuary, Alan Sandler received the honor of Chatan Torah. Alan has served as the Sanctuary's leading usher, sharing his smile,

warmth, respectfulness and dignity with everyone he greets. Alan and Sylvia’s roots run deep in our synagogue, where Alan came to services regularly with his father. Irv Kalb received the honor of Chatan Bereishit in the Sanctuary. While he and Roz are relative newcomers to BT, they have earned a place in our hearts as valued members who are always upbeat, reaching out to others, and willing to serve. In the BT Minyan, Yoni Bedine received the honor of Chatan Torah. Since moving back to Baltimore , Yoni and Odeya and their kids have become a major part of our BT community. Yoni has assumed the responsibility of Gabbai in the BT Minyan, where he has served with a high level of professionalism, helping the service to run smoothly and giving honor to the Torah. Rod King was honored with Chatan Bereshit in the BT Minyan. Rod and Cheryl King are models of ongoing learning and growth in Torah and Jewish living. They have enhanced the character of our school and shul by their presence and their example of chesed to others and their relationship to Hashem.

BT again earns Top Workplace Award Beth Tfiloh Congregation and Schools is proud to have been named one of The Baltimore Sun’s Top 100 Workplaces for the third year. Details regarding BT's rankings will be published on December 1st in The Baltimore Sun. In its 2015 listing, The Baltimore Sun noted that “since its founding in 1921, Beth Tfiloh Congregation & Schools has grown into an indispensable institution within Baltimore’s Jewish community.” The rankings are based on anonymous employee responses to an online survey that measures various job-satisfaction factors, including training, how managers help employees to learn and grown, the organization’s values, and the extent to which employees feel appreciated, and feel that their work is meaningful. We extend mazel tov to our administration for this meaningful award, and look forward to sharing complete details soon.

Mazel Tov B’nai Mitzvah vumn hbc cuy kzn Gaia Peled Daughter of Julia and Amit Peled Sat., Dec. 10, 2016 Gaia attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the sister of Yonatan and Ben Peled. She is the granddaughter of Naama and Mordechai Peled and Sabine and the late Otto Tomek. Her hobbies include reading and bike riding. For her Mitzvah project, Gaia is writing a book about the dreams in the Torah and is donating the profits to charity.

Harper Goldberg sru vbj Daughter of Bonnie and Joshua Goldberg Sat., Dec. 17, 2016 Harper attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the granddaughter of Sammie and Ralph Goldberg, and Leslie and Scott Wasserman; and the greatgranddaughter of Shirley Teitler. Her hobbies include playing volleyball, and playing with her two dogs. For her Mitzvah project, Harper donated supplies to the Humane Society for their rescue animals.

The festivities begin at 5:30 pm in the Tuvin Library, and are followed by the beautiful and spirited Friday Night service in the Epstein Chapel. Veterans honored at Annual Veterans Day and Recognition Shabbat The following remarks were delivered in a meaingful tribute to veterans by BT member, Frank Bressler, on Shabbat morning, November 12th

families are still mourning as a result of their losses from that conflict and the wars that followed.

This weekend is Veterans Day 2016. Once again it is time to pause to pay tribute and show our appreciation to all veterans who served from World War II to the present day, who through their efforts helped preserve the freedoms that we are now so priviledged to enjoy. When Roosevelt was President he said: “‘When I took hold in ‘33 a nation’s faith was mine,’ said he. ‘I promised them this and I promised them that and I calmed them down with a fireside chat.’” Oh, how things have changed since then. BUT one thing that should never change is the memories and debt we owe to the Americans who fought and served this nation when called upon. It was on December 7, 1941, 75 years ago, that Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was attacked. Now, sadly, within 5 years very few if any World War II Veterans will still be alive. They are passing nationally at a rate of 600 each day. I was a Field Artillery Combat Medic who served with the 78th Lightning Division in the “Battle of the Bulge” in Germany in 1944 and 1945, 71 years ago.

At this time, I would appreciate if all the Veterans in attendance today would please rise to be recognized. This entire congregation and a very grateful nation thanks you for your service. September 2, 2016 marked the 70th year since VJ Day ending World War II. The silence was deafening from The Sun paper and local media. How soon we forgot that 400.000 young Americans died during that war and how many

Thankfully, every year all veterans are honored in various ways. Here at at Beth Tfiloh today I am proudly initiating an Annual Recognition Day. On all future Veteran Day events I propose that we should not only honor the veterans, but it is something we have never done before and something long past due and should now also include all the families who have lost loved ones and all other persons, living or dead, who so proudly and patriotically served this great nation in war and peace on the home front. We also owe a debt of gratitude to them so we can today enjoy our life, liberty and pursuit of happiness in America. In conclusion, let us pray for peace and enjoy every precious moment and live every day to its fullness. G-d bless America and why not each other?

School News

School earns renewed accreditations from Middle States, AIMS Beth Tfiloh has received renewed accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and School Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), a nonprofit association that fosters school improvement in educational institutions through self-study, evaluation and accreditation. Beth Tfiloh’s accreditation term is for a period of ten years, and is based on the accreditation process and standards established by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS), which renewed Beth Tfiloh’s AIMS accreditation last spring. Beth Tfiloh undertook a rigorous AIMS/Middle States self-study in 2015 as part of its reaccreditation process, which included significant school-wide input from faculty, trustees, parents and students. The process included a 3-day visit by a team of 16 experienced educators and administrators from the area’s most highly respected independent schools and Jewish day schools. Beth Tfiloh, like other independent schools, seeks accreditation as an external, objective validation of its quality of education and student achievement, and as part of its continuous efforts toward educational excellence consistent with its mission.

MOCK ELECTIONS - Students of all ages participated in elections, with older students voting for President, and PreSchool children voting on their favorite snacks.

WHITE HOUSE TOUR & BRIEFING - BT seventh graders were treated to a tour of the White House and a special briefing with BT alumnus Chanan Weissman ‘01, the White House Liaison to the American Jewish community.

ENGINEERING CLASS NASA TRIP - 12th Grade BT students viewed the Web Space Telescope which will go into orbit in 2018.

Daniel Klein was named one of the top 40 under 40 by Baltimore Business Journal. Daniel Klein is the President of Klein Enterprises, a 4th generation developer, owner, and operator of commercial real estate throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Daniel and his wife, Anna, are members of our congregation and are the parents of three BT students, Mia (Kindergarten), Phillip (3 Year Olds) and Esther (Little Me). Irwin Azman and Eli Burman have raised over $41,000 to provide 60 protective vests for Israelis living in Judea and Samaria. They went to Israel together with our members Babak Imanoel, and Julie and Gary Applebaum to participate in a special ceremony delivering the vests. 8
