Rabbi Steven Exler ‘98 succeeds Rabbi Avi Weiss as Senior Rabbi of HIR We extend Mazel Tov to Rabbi Steven Exler ’98, who was installed as the Senior Rabbi of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale on Saturday night, November 14th. Rabbi Exler succeeds Rabbi Avi Weiss, who has served as the rabbi of HIR for over 40 years. Rabbi Weiss has earned a reputation for being a political activist and a champion of “open” Modern Orthodoxy, and is the founder of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah and Yeshivat Maharat, the first yeshiva to ordain women as Orthodox clergy.

“We are extremely proud to have a graduate of Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School attain such a prestigious rabbinic position,” said Mrs. Zipora Schorr, Director of Education. “Steven was one of our best and brightest students, with a keen intellect and a warm, endearing spirit. We wish him much haatzlacha

as he assumes this challenging new role.”

Steven attended Beth Tfiloh Community School from kindergarten through high school, as did his sister

Lisa Exler ’96, who was one of two students in her BT class to achieve perfect SAT scores. Their mother, Emma Exler, was a beloved teacher who taught in Beth Tfiloh PreSchool for over 20 years.

Steven studied at Yeshivat Har Etzion before attending Brandeis University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Biology. He received an MA in Bible from Bernard Revel Graduate School and studied in the Yeshiva University Beit Midrash and Yeshivat Maale Gilboa in Israel.

Steven received his rabbinic ordination from Yeshivat Chovevei Torah. He and his wife, Shira Billet, are the proud parents of a son, Ilan Shmuel.

Sisterhood News Worth Mentioning! Sisterhood’s card and Mah Jongg party on October 27 SOLD OUT! A delicious lunch was enjoyed by a happy crowd, and the fun continued during an afternoon of games.

Chanukah: We hope this Chanukah will be one to remember. The first candle is lit the evening of December 6. Stop by the Gift Shop for your Chanukah gifts and menorot. After the holiday, visit for further reductions on holiday items.

Sisterhood’s BT Cares Clothing Drive Reminder: On Sunday, December 13, 10 am-2 pm, bring all new and gently used men’s casual clothing and accessories to the High School entrance for redistribution to the homeless and less fortunate. A volunteer will meet your car and take your donations inside.

Future Projects: Our Purim program will feature an original Purim shpiel and some other surprises. Planning for a trip is in its early stages; it involves traveling from site to site on a train instead of hiking. On Tuesday, March 15, BT Sisterhood will host the MultiSisterhood Luncheon. BT Cares Upcoming Events Mark your calendars! BT Cares has some great upcoming opportunities to get involved and make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate.

Through December 16, please donate to the BT Cares Glove Collection for Community Mitzvah Day. Help us reach our goal of collecting 2,000 pair of gloves to be used in Winter Survival Kits during Community Mitzvah Day. Boxes will be placed in the Lower School Lobby, High School Lobby, and at the Administrative Entrance.

On Tuesday, December 8 at Family Chanukah Bingo, BT Cares will collect brand new, un-opened and unwrapped toys to benefit the children at Hackerman Patz House.

On Sunday, December 13, BT Cares and the Beth Tfiloh Sisterhood are hosting a one-day MEN’S Clothing Drive from 10 am-2 pm in the Beth Tfiloh High School Lobby. Please drop-off new or gently used t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweaters, button-down shirts, sweatpants, jeans, khakis, slacks, suits, ties, tennis shoes, dress shoes, hats, belts, and winter accessoriescoats, hats, gloves, and scarves. Brand new undergarments and socks are also needed, but must be in un-opened

packages. Toiletries will also be accepted.

On Monday, December 14, BT Cares and Mercaz will collect Kosher home-baked or store-bought desserts that will be donated to the children in the afterschool program at Paul’s Place. Drop off all desserts between 8 am and 10 am in the Weiner Board Room. No nuts, please!

On Friday, December 18, please send in an extra HELP lunch with your child or grandchild to benefit the residents at Beans & Bread. Anyone who is interested in delivering the lunches to Beans & Bread on this date, please contact Lindsay Gaister: lgaister@btfiloh.org.

On Friday, December 25, look for BT Cares balloons at Community Mitzvah Day as Beth Tfiloh serves as a Mitzvah Room Partner. BT Cares will host a table and make stress balls for hospital patients with dementia. There will be hundreds of volunteers and 2,000 Baltimore residents in need will benefit from your hard work and efforts!

AIPAC: Ten BT High School students learned about and advocated for Israel’s needs, at AIPAC's High School Summit, together with Rabbi Yehuda Oratz.

SHABBATFEST 2015: 130 High School students attended with Moshav Band's Yehuda Solomon, heard inspirational divrei Torah, and bonded with faculty members during this special Shabbat experience.

HS SCIENCE: Dr. Herb Moskowitz, Managing Director of iotech International and a BT grandparent, taught the 12th grade biotechnology class about the use of molecular iodine to prevent bacterial growth in food and other products, as part of their unit on microbial growth...via Skype.

CLOTHING DRIVE: The 4th grade Chesed Committee coordinated another successful clothing drive that collected 30+ boxes to benefit the Wolfe Street Academy, with help from Morah Alicia's 3's.

MS SCIENCE: Sixth graders explored the characteristics of solids, liquids and gases as they watched a dry ice crystal ball pop, leaving a puff of smoke behind.

MS SOCCER: The BT Middle School Soccer teams faced off against Krieger Schechter Middle School, resulting in two victories (Boys A team won 1-0, Boys B team won 2-1) and a tie (Girls team tied 2-2.)

AMADEUS: The High School Fall theatrical production of Amadeus featured a talented cast, with authentic costumes, creative set design, and outstanding technical support by fellow students.

The Kasners: Helping to Build Their Second Home…BT! Although both Dr. Kasners grew up in different states – Cindy, an optometrist, is a Baltimore native; Harvey, an OB/ GYN hails from New Jersey – both had similar educational backgrounds. Each attended public school, supplemented

by Hebrew school for their Jewish education. When it was time to consider their own children’s education, they reflected back on their own experiences and realized that they wanted a more indepth Jewish education for their own sons, Matt ‘15 and Andrew ‘18.

And that’s when they discovered Beth Tfiloh.

“After looking at several schools, we came to the conclusion that we wanted a school that provided strong academics, had a warm environment, and a strong sense of community,” comments Cindy. “We felt that BT would provide an excellent secular and Jewish education for our children while reinforcing the Jewish values that we taught at home.”

Once a part of the School community, the Kasners began attending services at the synagogue and decided that BT was where they wanted to have their children become b’nei mitzvah. “After developing a strong connection to both the School and the Congregation, we feel that BT is our second home,” says Harvey.

“Beth Tfiloh has provided our whole family with a solid Jewish foundation,” adds Cindy. “It has helped our children grow and develop into responsible, well-rounded young men with a strong Jewish identity. Through BT, we have met so many wonderful families whose friendships we will cherish for a lifetime.”

Teachers are an important factor of their sons’ personal growth. Says Cindy, “Both sons felt like they’ve developed relationships with teachers,” and notes how much their athletic sons appreciate seeing their teachers cheering them

Focus on Philanthropy “Robed in Dignity and Strength”: The Allison Heyden Scholarship Fund In Eishet Chayil, King Solomon’s lyrical poem, he extols the virtues of his beloved wife. Among his praises are numerous references to clothing – both his wife’s wardrobe and that which she provides for her family, who are dressed “in fine clothing” made of “fine linen and luxurious cloth.” But perhaps her greatest adornment is that “she is robed in strength and dignity, and she smiles at the future.”

Designs from Alli’s nationally-recognized collection

have established the Allison Heyden Scholarship Fund, a permanent fund in Beth Tfiloh’s endowment that will provide scholarship grants to BT students.

“We felt that something Jewish was needed to keep Alli’s memory alive at someplace she loved, where she loved being with her friends every day, where she made a commitment to travel to every day from Harrisburg, PA, where she loved the teachers as she did,” says David. “The perfect place to create the scholarship was at BT, to get her friends involved. Now that it’s the 10th anniversary of their graduation, it’s the right time to do something to keep her memory alive.”

Alli Heyden ‘05 was the embodiment of King Solomon’s praise. A talented and athletic High School student, Alli was known for her sparkling smile, her effervescent personality and most of all, her passion for fashion design. An up-and-coming designer, Alli’s dessertthemed senior collection put her school, Savannah College of Art and Design, on the map when it was showcased in Neimann Marcus’ Atlanta store window, featured in Cosmopolitan magazine and in the New York Times fashion magazine.

Alli’s accomplishments landed her a spot in Sally Congdon-Martin’s book, Emerging Fashion Designers.

Alli’s life was tragically cut short in 2011 due to complications following a surgery. To perpetuate her memory, her parents, David and Renee Heyden,

Although she’d previously visited Israel, “going with her friends gave it a whole different perspective,” says Renee. It was also her first visit to Auschwitz, where both of her paternal grandparents had been imprisoned.

The Heydens note that several BT graduates have followed in Alli’s footsteps, attending the Savannah College of Art and Design, and that Alli’s artistic legacy helped spark the growth of BT’s arts curriculum. “She made an impact on BT in her life, with what she accomplished. It’s important to keep that memory alive,” says Renee.

But Alli left her mark on BT, friends and family as well, even beyond her artistic contributions. She was an accomplished athlete, playing for four years on the BT Girls Soccer team, as well as winning numerous medals as a member of the Harrisburg, PA Maccabi swim team at national Maccabi competitions – she even got to meet her

Her close friend from High School, Jessica Kowitz ‘05, shares that one of Alli’s favorite experiences at BT was their senior year art class, “where we could design something of our own,” and, of course, the Weiner Basketball Tournaments. But one of Alli’s most meaningful experiences at BT was her senior trip to Poland and Israel.

Focus on Philanthropy idol, Olympic champion Mark Spitz. Her experiences even influenced the career path of her sister, Stephanie ‘09, who chose to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Temple University after observing the interactions between Alli and her therapist.

Alli’s own career trajectory was set in motion in part by her High School history and English teacher who “gave her the backbone to find a fashion school where she’d really be happy,” says David. Her teachers describe her as a “delightful person, well-respected by faculty and students, who went on to pursue her passion in life. When her fashion design showed up in the New York Times magazine one Sunday, we felt so proud to have taught her.”

At the November 9th BT ANNUAL CAMPAIGN phonathon, 19 dedicated volunteers helped Beth Tfiloh get to 60% of our 2016 campaign goal. Thank you to the Beth Tfiloh congregants, School parents, alumni and parents of alumni who worked the phones, closing 65 gifts in just two hours! That admiration for Alli extended throughout the school. “Allison was an upbeat, beautiful, positive person who made others smile because she always smiled,” remembers Mrs. Zipora Schorr, BT’s Director of Education, with whom Alli was very close. “She lit up the room with her smile, but the external was a representation of how beautiful she was inside.”

“The buzz word around computer science is ‘computational thinking,’” says Mrs. Elissa Hozore, Lower School’s new Director of Instructional Technology.

“Skills such as sequencing, logical reasoning, and modelling, are integral to computer science, but also to every other discipline. Coding is a wonderful, fun and creative way to develop those skills in young children,” she adds.

“Right now we are learning how to use the program and learning how to code,” shares first grade teacher Mrs. Toby Kaplowitz. “After the students use it and get used to it, we will integrate it into our reading, writing and math. Coding teaches a lot of skills the students will need as a basis for more technology learning as well.”

But don’t tell our first graders all that.

They just think they’re having fun.
