Ari attends Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School and is the brother of Tali, Sarit, and Yoni Burman. He is the grandson of Rosa Burman and the late David Burman, and Yeva Miropolskaya and Vulf Miropolskiy His hobbies include soccer and cooking. For his Mitzvah Project, Ari is raising money and supporting the One Israel Fund which helps save lives in Israel.

Beth Tfiloh Performing Arts Studio is a three-week program designed to enrich the performing arts student in all areas of theatrical production, both onstage and behind the scenes.

The program culminates in two full performances of the musical The Little Mermaid, Jr. with full costumes, set pieces, props, lights, and sound.

Daily morning workshops include improv, movement, vocal, acting, and makeup, taught by studio staff as well as guest artist instructors.

Students will also be involved in set and prop construction and the technical end of the production.

School News Morah Ingrid receives CJE Novice Teacher Award Congratulations to PreSchool 3's teacher Morah Ingrid Strand on receiving the The Macks Center for Jewish Education Novice Teacher Award, which honors an educator with exceptional promise, who demonstrates dedication to children and a combination of mastery over content knowledge and their classroom.

BT wins 1st and 2nd place in National Bible Contest Mazal tov to Caleb G. ‘21 on winning first place and to Ryan J. ‘21 on winning second place in the The Jewish Agency for Israel’s Chidon HaTanach (National Bible Contest). They competed along with 150 of their peers in grades 6-11 at the competition in New York. Beth Tfiloh had the largest student delegation in the country and we are extremely proud of the time and effort our students invested in studying Torah to prepare for this challenging competition.

PreSchool awarded new state accreditation To ensure the highest standards for early childhood educational programs, the State of Maryland Department of Education developed a more rigorous preschool accreditation process.

Three years ago, BT embarked upon this accreditation process, which involved BT parent volunteers, staff and administration to evaluate each classroom and teacher individually and the school as a whole. Our Reggio Emilio-inspired play-based early childhood education was highly regarded by the accreditation team, prompting one accreditation team member remark that she was so impressed by one of the Beth Tfiloh classrooms she was brought

to tears! We are proud to announce that BT PreSchool is now an MSDE accredited program, in addition to its already existing AIMS accreditation.

Congratulations to Morah Melissa and the entire BT PreSchool staff on this momentous accomplishment!

School News Chanan Weissman ‘01 appointed Jewish liaison to the White House The following is excerpted from an article published in the Washington Jewish Week.

BT alumnus Chanan Weissman has been appointed as the new White House liaison to the American Jewish community.

COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG: Making bricks from sand, learning how to set a table properly, and learning how to fetch water to fight fires as part of a bucket brigade -fifth graders learned these skills first-hand during their visit to Colonial Williamsburg, wrapping up their studies of the American Colonial period.

SPRING CONVOCATION: The BT School family sent our seniors off to the Natanzon/ Taylor Senior Trip to Poland and Israel with song, prayer, blessings, parting gifts and best wishes for a life-changing journey. Tzeitchem l'shalom u'bo'achem l'shalom! Go in peace and return in peace!

Chanan previously served as the spokesperson for the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor; the Bahrain desk officer in the State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs; the Yemen and Kuwait Action Officer on the Joint Staff/J5 in the Department of Defense; and as a junior speechwriter and strategic communications advisor in the front office of the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.

He earned his master’s degree from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and his bachelor’s degree in journalism in government and politics from the University of Maryland College Park.

In a prepared statement, Weissman said he looked forward to working with Jewish community and lay leaders across the country in the coming months.

“It’s a personal and professional honor of a lifetime to serve a President I so deeply admire and to work with a community I so intimately and proudly identify with,” he said.

FROM ASHES TO REBIRTH: The BT Senior class recited the memorial prayer at Auschwitz as part of their Senior Seminar in Poland and Israel.

The hallmark of being the White House’s Jewish liaison is uniting people of all political and religious backgrounds, said Steve Rabinowitz who heads a Washington, D.C., public relations firm and worked for the Clinton White House. This includes organizing celebrations, such as the two annual White House Chanukah parties and reaching out to Jewish communities about White House functions of interest.

Chanan’s civic activism dates back to his childhood, said Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School Director of Education Zipora Schorr. Schorr said that Weissman was heavily involved in student government at the Baltimore school and always put others first.

“He did a lot of community service,” she said. “He volunteered constantly.

He was involved because his family was involved.”

Weissman received a Merit Award for Study in Israel along with a faculty award for character and academics at his Beth Tfiloh graduation ceremony in 2001.

In addition to being a BT alumnus, Chanan is a current BT school parent and the husband of BT Lower School Counselor, Elana Weissman.

ROBOTICS: While BT seniors Ben R. ‘17 and Nina F. ‘16 took first place in the IEEE 2016 Baltimore Robot Challenge's 2-Legged Robot Overall category, our first graders were busy with solving intensive mathematical computations, learning about algorithms, and translating their coding skills from ScratchJr to Google's Blockly, to program Lower School robots Poe and Dash to recite the Mah Nishtanah.

A strong spring athletics season boasts track, golf, and lacrosse teams competing in division championships The Varsity Track and Field team had an outstanding season. Five different runners medaled at the “B” Conference Championships, and seven qualified to compete at the “A” Conference Championships!

The Varsity Golf team had one of the best seasons in program history.

Finishing with a 5-1 record, the team triumphed in the Semifinals against Jemicy School and advanced to the Conference Championship Match against Friends School. With several underclassmen playing prominent roles, the future for the golf team is bright!

The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team followed up back-to-back championship game appearances with a fantastic regular season, finishing in 3rd place with a 6-2 record and a phenomenal goals record of 175 scored against just 66 allowed. BT defeated Jemicy in the Quarterfinals 14-2 and defeated two time defending champions Indian Creek in the Semifinals in an exciting overtime game to proceed to the division championship on the Hopkins Homewood field.

The Boys Varsity Baseball team had a very competitive season in the MIAA “C” Conference, finishing in 3rd place with a 6-8 league record.

a really exciting season with several close games. The team finished in 1st place in their Division with an 8-5 record, highlighted by a pair of high scoring wins down the stretch to clinch 1st place: 17-15 at home vs. Oldfields and 16-13 on the road against Key. In the playoffs, Chapelgate managed to stop the Warriors in the Quarterfinals, but everyone is looking forward to another great season next year.

The Boys JV and Varsity Tennis teams had excellent seasons. The JV team worked through great adversity and played a tough schedule but finally won a league match against St. Mary’s by the score of 4-1! The Varsity won a pair of league matches to earn a playoff spot but fell in the Quarterfinals. Both teams are currently competing in their league individual tournaments hoping to bring home some Singles and Doubles titles.

The Girls Varsity Softball team worked hard and earned a win against Oldfields! The girls had a great time and are aiming for more wins next season.

The Boys Middle School Baseball team finished strong with a 13-6 win over Friends School to close out the season. Excellent pitching and timely hitting paved the way for the exciting win. In Girls Middle School Softball, the team won its final pair of games, topping local rivals Park School and Krieger Schechter by scores of 15-13 and 8-7 respectively. The Boys Middle School Lacrosse team had a challenging year but worked very hard and saw some good young players emerge. The Girls Middle School Lacrosse team finished with a fantastic 4-2 record, highlighted by wins over local rivals Krieger Schechter, Park, and Friends!

That is just one of the valuable lessons that 50 BT School parents, alumni and Congregation members learned from American corporate leader Beth Kaplan as she reflected on her career trajectory and what it has taught her at the Beth Tfiloh Professional Network (BTPN) breakfast on May 9th. In addition to being a parent of two BT alumni and a Congregation member herself, Beth is a seasoned executive who has served in senior management for large corporations such as Procter & Gamble, Bath & Body Works, and GNC Live Well, as well as in senior management and investor roles at fast growing companies such as Rent The Runway.

As a manager, she believes in setting clear, established metrics for the employees she supervises. Because of that, her colleagues describe her has tough but fair, the hardest working person, and smart. (She describes herself as competitive, driven and smart).

To grow your own career, Beth emphasized the need to find a mentor, and, like Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, to “be in the pool every day.”

And while you need to constantly work harder, you still need to carve time out for yourself – for Beth that means family and competitive ballroom dancing.

Development News Making BT Extraordinary: The Venick Family’s Extra-Curricular Activity Fund Many Beth Tfiloh families say that BT is like a second home for them. For Holly and Steve Venick, who live just a few doors away from BT, it’s almost literally true. “If we are not in the home we sleep in, we are all at BT, whether it’s for school, work, synagogue, camp, sports, theater, community service, etc.”

“My family and I have been members of Beth Tfiloh for many years,” comments Steve, who is president of Fram Monument and chairs both the Jewish Cemetery Association and United Hebrew Cemetery in his few nonBT moments. “I grew up at BT and even attended their Hebrew School and camp.

Some of the teachers I had in Hebrew School are now teaching Judaics to our children in BT’s day school, which is amazing to see.” He and Holly joined the Congregation as a couple in 2007, and added a new Venick generation to the BT family when their oldest child, Jordyn ‘23, enrolled in BT PreSchool at age two.

“BT is a perfect fit for our lifestyle and how we raise our children,” shares Holly. “We love the diversity of a Jewish community school, but the consistency of the love of Judaism and learning. Our nieces and nephew all attended BT’s day school from PreSchool through High School and it was a natural progression for us to want the same for our children.”

The Venicks’ BT involvement extends far beyond being Congregation members, and School and Camp parents.

A previous synagogue board and marketing committee member, Steve currently serves as the Brotherhood board’s 1st Vice President. “I enjoy the comradery the Brotherhood brings to the synagogue as well as helping raise funds to sponsor important programming in the school and shul.”

Holly’s BT volunteer career encompasses positions on the Lower School and Grandparents Day committees, chairing the Parent Association’s Mishloach Manot for many years, as well as the BT Block Party and other events. She took her 12

BT involvement to a new level, joining the Congregation staff as the Director of Synagogue Life in 2013. “I enjoy engaging congregants through my role; I am so happy and proud to have served as a lay leader and now as staff at this institution,” she notes.

The Venick children have inherited their parents’ love of all things BT. “BT is the best!” exclaims Jordyn. “My friends are here, my amazing teachers are here…the fun is here!” Hunter ‘25 agrees. “I can’t wait to go to BT every day! On weekdays for school, on Shabbat for Kid Cong so I can win the Dynamic Davening Donut for being a great davener, and on Sunday for sports.” And Marley ‘29 adds, “I love to see my friends and teachers every day!”

“I feel very lucky to be able to go on field trips and participate in extra curricular activities and am glad our family fund will help other BT kids do the same.”

Jordyn Venick ‘23 The Venick family knows that a true BT experience extends beyond participating in shul services on Shabbat and holidays, learning both Judaics and general studies together as a community at school or spending summer days having adventures at BT camps. They want all BT kids to have the same immersive experience year-round that Jordyn, Hunter and Marley enjoy –like theater, soccer and basketball—but they know that for some families, that presents a real financial challenge.

And that’s where the Venicks stepped in, creating the Venick Family ExtraCurricular Activity Fund.

“My father taught me at a young age that the more you give, the more you get back,” explains Steve. “We had heard of BT children who wanted to participate in sports, field trips, the High School spring formal, or other special activities that couldn’t because tuition was the main priority for those families—extra-

curriculars were above and beyond their means.” Holly adds, “We talked to our kids about all the activities they get to do, and that there are some kids who don’t get to enjoy all those extras. We discussed as a family what we could do to help and decided to create this fund. We wanted our children to see how much of an impact we can have on others and learn by our example, while also feeling that they are making a difference since this is a family fund.”

The Venick children have taken this lesson in chessed to heart. “I’m proud my family can help other BT kids do more activities so they can be happy,” expresses Hunter. Jordyn, whose overwhelmingly successful Bat Mitzvah project, Kind Mind sensory kits for Alzheimer’s patients, was recently featured in the Baltimore Jewish Times, adds, “I’m happy that my family can do a great mitzvah and help other families in need. I feel very lucky to be able to go on field trips and participate in extra curricular activities and am glad our family fund will help other BT kids to do the same.”
